While high school seniors tend to do their senior portraits in the fall, College graduates tend to do them in the spring much closer to graduation. The Christmas holidays have barely wrapped up and we’re starting to get calls from excited grads and their parents to talk about graduation portraits, and we’re here for it! 🙌

I always encourage graduates to plan far enough ahead that we can help with beautiful grad announcements. That’s typically at least a month or so before your actual graduation date. Six week would be even better so we’re not helping everyone at the very same time! =)

The most common schools we tend to photograph grads from are UCO, OSU and OU, with all three campuses being beautiful places for portraits. My personal favorite may be OU, with all of the big old trees and ivy covered walls. It’s just rich with history and beauty, and not too long a drive from our Edmond studio office.

In years past we’ve mailed out as many as six- or seven hundred, but cutting it back to just 180 felt like the right amount of addressing this year with all that we had going on. December is just so busy personally, on top of the holiday deadlines for Christmas portraits for so many of our clients. You know how it is!

This is our second round of silhouette portraits of our family, and we just love capturing some of the significance of the year in our silhouette portraits. This year, our youngest took up football; our 3rd born continued to excel at classical Russian ballet, and has earned her pointe shoes; our 2nd born actually hung up her pointe shoes and ballet career and our eldest graduated!

Photographs can be some of our very dearest treasures, and if you find yourself in a similar circumstance, there are really only a few options…

1. Mail the delicate, priceless, irreplaceable photo to an internet-based company that’s out of state (or even out of country 😳) you found on Google that promises to restore and reprint it for you.
2. Take a picture with your phone and just enjoy it that way for now, but at the risk of losing your phone or the photo into the digital ether someday. (Remember AOL? Blogspot? MySpace? Someday I fear that Facebook will join those forgotten programs)
3. Just ignore it and hope that entropy (the 2nd law of thermodynamics) is somehow miraculously paused. 😉 Okay, that’s not really a good option, I’m joking, but it’s probably the default because life is just too busy for everything, right?
4. Call your local photographer and enlist their help digitizing and reprinting your precious memories.

As you will no doubt guess, I’m here for those of you who are looking for solution #4.

The photos I have of my father (who passed away when I was 8) are priceless to me. Yours are too, and I totally get that. I’m here for you, to protect, preserve and reproduce your portraits professionally when quality and the best results matter to you.

It’s always curious to me that my family from Trinidad (and pretty much everyone else in the world outside of the US) says “Happy Christmas” instead of the American “Merry Christmas.” I finally looked up the etymology of “Merry…” vs “Happy…” and it was interesting! Read about it here, if you like. To summarize, it sounds as if “merry” is a lot less restrained and more all-out fun, which makes sense since “happy” was used by the queen who made it popular.

Regardless of what level of restraint you practice, we do wish you a wonderful Christmas and all the very best for the holiday and the new year ahead!

Something that I’ve been pondering recently, is the importance and place of feasting in our normal yearly traditions. Seems to me that feasting was practiced a lot better in days gone by. Nowadays, everyone is just too busy all the time to even have a multiple course dinner, much less a multiple-day feast, and I think that’s to our own detriment. Let’s bring back the feasts and remember how to truly celebrate in gratitude for the many blessings we enjoy throughout the year! I’m all in, and will be bringing the “merry.”

We are so grateful to our awesome clients for another successful year (our 23rd!) where we’ve been able to practice the craft of photography full-time and provide for good-sized family with expensive hobbies like classical Russian ballet, Jiu Jitsu, traveling, etc.

Parents often feel the need to apologize for energetic, spunky kids, but honestly, they’re so much fun to photograph! Every second brings multiple moments worthy of capture, and it’s so much more rewarding than trying to get a bored or extremely shy child to show a hint of emotion and sparkle.

These passionate kids take in the world with wonder, curiosity and excitement. It makes me want to be more like them… More like I was as a child. But that happens to most poeple, right? When you’re around kids, don’t you want to become more like a child again? I’m smiling right now just thinking about it.

Here are some of our favorites from little Alex’s recent children’s portraits celebrating three years on this beautiful planet we call home…

Yep… this was our very first shot. It was at this moment we knew we had our hands full. =)

But with a little magic and fun, things turned around pretty quickly…

Those pink cowboy boots were so perfect for Alex’s personality and energy… Loved them!!

Sigh… Those blue eyes in combo with the ginger hair. What a beauty! I so wish I had a little magic looking-glass to see her in 30 years chasing her dreams and conquering the world as a successful grown woman.

Who knows? It’s not impossible that we will have the opportunity to photograph her all growing up so we can see. A photographer can hope! =)

It was one of the hottest days of the summer, but by keeping in the shade and staying relaxed, the family kept cool and composed the entire time. If they broke a sweat, I didn’t notice. I, on the other hand, was a glorious, sweaty mess. Haha!! We do whatever it takes, so if that means being out in the sun photographing them in the shade, or being down all the way in the dirt to get the right angle, that exactly what I do. And the sweet rewards are portraits like these, a cold drink in the car, and a nice refreshing shower or dip in the pool when we get home. The simple things in life… And if the 2020 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that the simple things in life are often the most meaningful and enjoyable.

Here’s to another wonderful 10 years, Justin and Vineetha! Y’all are gorgeous together and make the most beautiful kids. =) Thanks for trusting us with your portraits! I can’t wait to capture family portraits in the future for y’all, to see how beautifully the girls grow up.
