In a less than 2 weeks I will be in my favourite place on earth, Hawaii.

Hawaiian Sunset - Honeymoon 2005

Hawaii holds a special place for me, it is where my husband proposed (also our first overseas trip together) and where we had our honeymoon. We seem to celebrate our big milestones there, and this time it is my husband's 30th Birthday.

I'm looking forward to lying by the beach with cocktails, shopping and scuba-diving for my first time. The Prior Engagement team will still be here in the office, and it will be business as usual.

You don't have to be in Hawaii to have a Hawaiian themed wedding or event, and a Hawaiian theme doesn't have to mean gaudy shirts and bright leis. I love this Inspiration Board from Snippet & Ink for a breezy, neutral Hawaiian style wedding.

New Years Eve 2011

It's New Years Eve 2011.

I have so many plans for 2012, I can't wait to get started. Things aren't going to change dramatically they're just going to get better.

I never stick to New Years Resolutions, so this year I'm not going to make any. I am going to make a couple of promises to myself which I will keep, and by putting them on here, they will be in black and white forever.

I will blog lots more
2012 will be the biggest and most exciting year yet for Prior Engagement
I will be thankful and appreciate just how lucky I am
I have just permanently changed over from PC to Mac and I'm finding the change quite difficult, however I will have more patience with this change.

Last year Mr PE and I spent New Years Eve in Times Square, New York. This was a once in a lifetime experience, and something I will never forget.

This year we will be celebrating with dinner with the family, and then watching the 9pm fireworks on one of the gorgeous Gold Coast Beaches. Then home to watch a movie.

Whatever your plans or if its just another night, I wish you a happy and safe 2012.

Preppy Pink and Navy Wedding

"When the time came to plan our wedding, we knew we wanted it to be timeless and classic, but not traditional, with a dash of good old Southern Hospitality all the way up in Minnesota. Eighty percent of our guest list was flying in for the wedding and we did not want them to worry about a thing. We rented a charter bus to take them to and from the wedding, and when they arrived at the boat club they were immediately handed either a Mint Julep or a John Daly and an Hors d’oeuvre as they waited for the ceremony. "

Each Tuesday, Cosmo Bride asks a wedding insider to share their best tips and ideas. This week, Erin from Prior Engagement chats all things wedding with us...

How did Prior Engagement start out?
While preparing for my wedding, I was unable to find beautiful invitations, bonbonniere and accessories all in the one place. I wanted to shop at night and on the weekends when it suited me, and I didn't want to have to make phone calls to different vendors for pricing, so I decided to start my own business delivering what I was looking for myself. We searched around Australia and overseas to bring new wedding accessories online, so no matter where you live, you have access to all the same products.
We have been operating now for over six years, and in this time have assisted thousands of brides to make their special day as memorable as possible.

What sort of services do you offer brides?
Prior Engagement is a one-stop shop, to give brides (and grooms!) inspiration, ideas and the products to achieve their dream wedding. Many of our customers ask questions about themes, trends and even traditions. They want to speak to a professional about their wedding, and we tend to be one of the first in line they deal with. As a result, our products can be the catalyst for the theme or colour scheme of a wedding. For example, customers have fallen in love with our invitations and based their whole wedding around this.
We like to make our site as easy to use as possible, so everything is in logical places, with no advertising on there to detract from the shopping experience.

Do you have any decorating tips for couples on a budget?
There are plenty of ideas that don't break the bank. It doesn't take much to get the right feel, and most of the time less is more. Many couples forget to ask the reception venue what furniture and decorations they may have – you’d be very surprised what some venues can do for you, at no or little extra cost.
Try DIY kits, which can be cheaper than ready-made products, and you’ll get to enjoy making them with your partner, girlfriends or family.
A great trend at the moment is vintage-style weddings. This look can be easily and inexpensively achieved by creating bonbonniere of home made jam in mason jars with a fabric cover, scouring thrift stores for vases and decor, and setting up a retro typewriter instead of having a guest book, which guests can use to type their best wishes.

What do you love most about weddings?
I love that weddings celebrate the true love between two equally committed people. It is the ultimate act of devotion, and is such a special moment for the couple and their family and friends, celebrating a new life together.
The excitement when a couple is newly engaged, the anticipation for the big day and then seeing our customers having the best day of their lives is the most rewarding part of running my business.

How have favours changed in the last few years?
Favours have become much more detailed and of a higher quality. They’re now performing a number of duties – they are used as part of the reception decor, act as a place card and thank the guests for their attendance.
There is more expectation on favours, they need to be impressive, unique, personal, of high quality and at a reasonable price. The biggest change would have to be personalisation. It is now more popular than ever to have your details printed or engraved, or even to have a monogram or crest (think recent Royal Wedding) designed. Weddings have certainly become a fashion-critical affair, which is creating more and more stunning, one-of-a-kind weddings.

Sunshine Coast Hinterland :: Part 1

After living in Queensland for the past 7 years I recently finally took a trip into the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. I have heard so much about the area over the years, I'd seen photos of so many beautiful weddings there and couldn't wait to see it for myself.

Well, it certainly didn't dissappoint, it was all that I had hoped and more. Each town has its own distinct feel. The towns of Maleny and Montville though very close to each other are very different. Maleny feels like you've just stepped into a beautiful community, where locals visit the town for supplies and catch up for a coffee.

Montville on the other hand is full of quaint antique shops, book stores, galleries, cafes and restaurants with picturesque views of the rolling hills.

Whether for a relaxing weekend away, a stunning wedding (maybe a destination wedding location), gorgeous honeymoon or just for a day trip (if you are in Brisbane or the Gold Coast) you can't go wrong with the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Red Rose Ceremony

The timeless and romantic Rose Ceremony is will suited for any wedding celebration. The charm behind the Rose Ceremony is in the visual representation of the love the Bride and Groom have for each other. On this special day, it is important to acknowledge the love that you have along with the love of the extended families that will also be united by this marriage.

The rose ceremony is incredibly versatile and can be easily customised to accommodate various family situations or personal preferences. Guidelines rather than hard rules will allow you to create meaningful ceremony best suited to you.

Suggested Guidelines

1. The Red Rose Promise Card should be filled out prior to the ceremony. The card is intended to be a signed and dated keepsake of the wedding day. A rose should be handed out to each individual that will be included in the ceremony. This can be done before the ceremony or at an alternate designated time. Those included might be family members, childern or even the Bridal Party, depending on the preference of the couple. The officiant will then place one rose in each of the outer vases to represent the Bride and Groom.

2. At a pre-chosen time, those who have been given a rose will place them into the central vase as a representation of the love they have for the Bride and Groom. As an option, the Bride and Groom may choose to collect the roses from the individuals and place the resulting rose bouquet in the central vase themselves.

After the vows have been completed and the Officiant announces the new Mr. and Mrs. they will then each be handed the roses from the outer vases, while the guests are informed of the meaning behind the ceremony. It is appropriate that the first gift the Bride and Groom give to each other as husband and wife should be love. As a single rose carries the meaning "I love you", they will then exchange their roses and give the greatest gift that either one of them has to share.

3. After the exchange has been completed the Bride and Groom will then place their new roses into the central vase, merging their love with the love of their family and friends.

Alternatively, the Bride and Groom may choose to present their symbolic rose to their parents as opposed to adding it to the bouquet created in the central vase.

Tip: If the Bride and Groom will be including their roses in the bouquet, choosing a different colour of rose will allow them to stand out. A preserved single rose, or rose petals added to the Promise Card before tucking it away, will serve as a loving keepsake from this romantic ceremony.

Newlyweds Joya and Emre's amazing wedding music video to "The Time (Dirty Bit)" by the Black Eyed Peas

How cool is this idea, featured on Darcy Miller's blog The Bride's Guide. The Bride's Guide is a fantastic resource for any Wedding, Party or Event.

Some brides and grooms know how to make an entrance, but super-cute L.A. couple Joya and Emre said forget that. We're going to make a full-length music video. On the day of. And get all of our guests involved. Seriously --- even the officiant shows up in a cameo around 0:55. Check it out.

Here's a little backstory: The duo wanted to make a funny video that they could play in lieu of the traditional reception slideshow. But they worried that it would be too time-consuming, too expensive, and require too much acting. So they sat down with videographer David Robin and decided to take a chance on shooting a music video during their actual celebration at Terranea Resort. "We thought it would be cool to have a side project that everyone could participate in," says Joya, "and we hoped our guests would look back on it as a special shared memory."

Friends and family were alerted that they'd be video extras, and when the big day arrived, everyone brought their A game. "Every single person (including Joya's mom) was rocking out!" says Emre. "At the end of the second take, David's face was priceless, 'We nailed it!' he said."

When all was said and done, Joya and Emre --- with the help of planner Amber Gustafson --- pulled off a beautiful wedding (see more pics here), and walked away with an awesome video to remember it
all by.

The Wedding of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco

The Wedding of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956 will go down in history as the Wedding of the Century.

How They Met

Known as the wealthiest bachelor in the world, Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier in May, 1955, when Grace was attending the Cannes Film Festival and had agreed to be photographed with the Prince for Paris Match.

She was 26 years old. The Prince was just a few days shy of being 32. After the photo shoot, the Prince and Grace visited the Prince's gardens and small zoo.

Their second meeting was a dinner date and a meeting with Grace's family.

Engagement

In December, 1955, the engagement of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier was announced. He first gave her an friendship ring of diamonds and rubies. Her engagement ring was a twelve-carat emerald-cut diamond ring.

Gown

Grace Kelly's wedding dress was designed by Helen Rose, wardrobe designer at MGM. The MGM wardrobe department made the wedding dress as a gift from MGM.

It was a high-necked, long-sleeved gown with a fitted torso made from antique Valenciennes rose point lace and billowing skirt made of twenty-five yards of silk taffeta, one hundred yards of silk net, peau de soie, tulle and 125-year-old Brussels rose point lace.

She wore a Juliet cap that was decorated with thousands of seed pearls, appliquéd lace lovebirds, orange blossoms, and a veil of 90 yards of tulle.

The chief hairstylist at MGM Studios, Sydney Guilaroff, styled Grace's hair for her wedding. Grace carried a small Bible and a bouquet of lilies-of-the-valley.

Interesting fact: The lace decorated upper bodice and high neck of the wedding gown was a decorous choice for an actress who could no longer have any doubt cast on her suitability as a royal bride and princess.

Prince Rainier immediately banned the showing of films in Monaco if they had Grace Kelly in the cast. Fiction was not to be blurred with fact. It is still against the law in Monaco to show films featuring Grace Kelly.

The Grooms Attire

Prince Rainier designed the Napoleonic influenced dress uniform himself.

The Bridal Party

The matron of Honor was Grace's sister, Peggy. There were six bridesmaids. They all wore yellow organdy dresses. The six junior attendants (4 girls and 2 boys) were all dressed in white.

Guests included Cary Grant, Aga Khan, David Niven, Gloria Swanson, Aristotle Onassis, Ava Gardner, heads of state, and diplomats.

Wedding

Grace and Prince Rainier had two weddings; one was a civil wedding, and the other a religious ceremony.

Grace and her 65-member wedding party sailed to Monaco on the ocean liner Constitution on April 4, 1956. Prince Rainier gave Grace the yacht "Deo Juvante II" as a wedding gift.

Civil Ceremony
April 18, 1956 was the civil ceremony in the palace's baroque throne room.

Grace wore a pale pink taffeta dress with cream-colored Alencon lace, white kid gloves, and a Juliet cap. Rainier wore striped trousers, a white vest, gray tie, and a black morning coat. They exchanged their vows in French.

There were only 80 guests at the civil ceremony. They held a reception for the citizens of Monaco after the ceremony so that each one could shake hands with the new princess.

A gala celebration was held at the Opera House that evening.

Religious Ceremony
On April 19, 1956, at 9:30 a.m., 600 guests at the St. Nicholas Cathedral witnessed the religious wedding ceremony of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier at a high mass that was celebrated by the Bishop of Monaco.

During the ceremony they looked straight ahead, never looking at each other, just as they had been directed by senior church officials.

The flowers decorating the altar and church included white lilacs, hydrangeas, lilies, and snapdragons. It was called "the wedding of the century" by the press.

It is estimated that 30 million people watched the wedding on television.

After the wedding the couple held a garden party for residents of Monaco.

The luncheon reception was held in the Palace Court of Honor.

They sliced the six-tier wedding cake with the Prince's sword.

The people of Monaco gave the couple a cream and black Rolls-Royce convertible.

Honeymoon
Their honeymoon was a cruise aboard the "Deo Juvante II" with stops in Villegranche, Spain, and Corsica. Grace reportedly was frequently seasick.

Royal Wedding

Just like the rest of the world I am so excited for the Royal Wedding of William & Catherine this week. I will be glued to the TV on Friday to watch every detail.

I wasn't lucky enough to see Charles & Diana's Wedding, as I wasn't born :-) so this is really my first experience of a Royal Wedding (apart from Frederick & Mary). William and I are the same age, and embarrassingly I remember when I was at school writing EO 4 PW, so although I am happily married I am slightly jealous of Kate.
