Artificial intelligence (AI) is already changing the apprenticeship model in PR and communications.

Research that once took a junior half a day can now take minutes. First drafts can be generated instantly. Coverage can be summarised and information synthesised at a speed no entry-level professional can match.

That is undoubtedly progress, but if AI does the work through which people traditionally learned, how do we develop the next generation of senior advisers?

The work is the training

In our industry, people learn by doing. They write the first draft, build the media list, prepare the briefing, and sometimes get things wrong. They receive feedback, try again, and gradually develop an understanding of what “good” looks like.

But they are also learning something less tangible. How to listen. How to ask a better question. How to understand what a client is really worried about, rather than simply what they have asked for. These are the foundations of an adviser.

The same applies to relationships. If clients don’t trust you enough to share the real problem, you are unlikely to win the job. Building that trust means knowing the customer as a person. Understanding their pressures, ambitions, and personalities. Knowing what they need before they ask.

Technology has made relationships easier to manage at scale, but potentially easier to flatten too. CRM systems turned relationships into data points. AI can take that further.

But does AI really listen? Can it pick up the hesitation behind an answer, understand a change in tone, or recognise that the problem a client has described isn’t quite the problem they are actually trying to solve?

Perhaps eventually. But these are precisely the capabilities we need people to develop now.

The next generation learns by being in the room

Knowing about someone isn’t the same as knowing them. Sure, AI can analyse vast amounts of information about a person, organisation or audience. It can tell us what someone has said, written, shared and engaged with. It has changed the economics of knowing.

But logging publicly available information about a journalist into a media database is not the same as genuinely understanding that person’s interests, priorities, and preferences.

Our recent experience with Xavier reinforced our belief that people need meaningful responsibility early. They need to do the work, make mistakes, receive feedback, and gradually take on more complex decisions.

AI doesn’t change that philosophy. We see it as something to give juniors more opportunities to do the things that machines struggle with, such as making judgement calls or building relationships with customers and media personnel. Because if AI is going to carry more of the technical load, then communications people everywhere need to get better at being what AI can never be — human.

Running late to secure an all-important 3-month internship, I sent a “cold” email to Priority Consultants asking if there were any opportunities. There was no formal application, and honestly, this was awfully late. But somehow, time was found for two conversations on short notice, and an internship was offered that made sense for both sides.

This was despite my background in data analytics not being a usual fit for a PR and Communications firm. That kind of generosity is rare, and I don’t take it for granted.

As a data analytics major, my time here gave me hands-on experience with real datasets from Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and LinkedIn Analytics, allowing me to access data, analyse it, and draw insights in a real business context; an opportunity I don’t think I’d have found anywhere else.

I learned a tonne about how data can support digital performance marketing and communications, including Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), along the way.

But honestly, what made these two and a half (2.5) months special was the culture and the expectations set from day one.

Culture is built by habits and I learned so much from everyone including Jane, Nolan, my desk partner and motivator Zhong Ci, Amirah, and others; things about the working world that you don’t learn in a classroom.

Some key takeaways include:

• how to present data and findings to a corporate audience in a business context,

• how to actually do research,

• how to coordinate on a team project – very different to my classroom projects to date!

• and even the simpler stuff like time management and dressing the part.

More importantly I learned to be accountable and results-driven. I learned that data is immensely impactful when paired with a positive, performance-driven attitude and mindset. That, to me, is what makes a learning organisation. Where people are invested in, even when they may only be a fleeting three-month addition to the team.

Instead of being treated like just an intern, I was guided, challenged, and included.

That showed me that long-term return on investment in people isn’t the be-all and end-all. That developing people is worthwhile because people matter.

I learned just as much from the casual conversations, work-related or not, little life lessons, and practical tips in and around the office that I know I’ll carry with me.

I really like the people here! And I’m leaving with relationships I actually want to keep, not just a line on my resume.

To the Singapore office, thank you for your time, patience, and for treating me like part of the team from the beginning: Jane Prior, Zhong Ci Lee, Nolan Ovinis, Seng Jin Lim, Shika, Amirah, Selina, and Cynthia.

Likewise, to those overseas who were able to help me with my projects as well, despite the different time zones: Daniel Prakash, Kumaran Subramaniam, Justina Phoon, Joseph Gil Dignadice and Venju among others.

Grateful doesn’t quite cover it, so thank you for taking a chance on me.

Xavier Wu Wenshan,

Digital Performance Marketing Intern

As global supply chains shift and companies reassess their regional footprints amid geopolitical uncertainty and renewed U.S. tariffs under President Donald Trump, Vietnam has become an increasingly important destination for foreign investment across technology, infrastructure, professional services and sustainability.

Vietnam’s rise is driven by its ambition and opportunity, and while its media landscape has been significantly rationalised, it remains large and vibrant, with 733 licensed outlets. More than 80% of these are specialised journals and sectoral magazines. The number of newspapers has also dropped from a bloated 127 last year to a still-substantial 98 today, while broadcasters have been trimmed from an oversized 72 to a leaner 38. At the same time, the revised Press Law, which took effect in July 2026, introduces new provisions on artificial intelligence and state management of journalism.

A more structured media environment means accuracy and editorial relevance will increasingly determine which stories earn attention. This does not mean there is less appetite for business, technology, or investment stories. It just means that a regional announcement or translated press release needs to connect with editors by demonstrating why the story matters to highly sophisticated and discerning Vietnamese business audiences.

Why global messages need local narratives in Vietnam

Many multinational companies enter Vietnam with strong global content and regional research. Those assets are valuable, but they are not ready-made stories. Strategic localisation means understanding what is changing in Vietnam, how audiences interpret those changes, and where an organisation’s expertise contributes genuine value.

You cannot simply translate announcements for the Vietnamese market and expect them to resonate. The message can be the same as it is globally, but the narrative needs to be truly informed by local realities. An investment announcement may need to move beyond expansion figures and demonstrate skills development, technology transfer, or local capability building.

A technology story may need to connect more directly to Vietnam’s priorities around digital transformation and business resilience. A talent campaign may need to shift from recruitment towards knowledge exchange and professional development.

The strongest communications strategies begin before the pitch, requiring deep knowledge of policy direction as well as the wider conversations shaping Vietnam’s business environment to give a story the strategic narrative localisation that really resonates with the target audience.

That cannot be done with just an extensive media list. You need the know-how to assess if the story itself is positioned for Vietnam. Our approach combines market understanding, editorial judgement, and narrative development to help multinational organisations bridge the gap between what they want to communicate and what Vietnamese audiences are ready to engage with.

Communications success requires Vietnamese market understanding

We did this recently with a global enterprise technology and cybersecurity brand, with a campaign that moved beyond product messaging by building thought leadership by tying Vietnam’s ambitions for digital transformation to robust data protection and secure infrastructure.

Meanwhile, working with a foreign trade organisation seeking to engage Vietnamese technology professionals, we recognised that a conventional recruitment message could be perceived as facilitating talent poaching. Instead, we repositioned the story around skills exchange, international experience, and cross-border innovation.

In both cases, the objective was not simply to secure attention. It was to create narratives that served both the organisation’s goals and Vietnam’s wider development priorities.

To be clear, Vietnam remains full of opportunity, but it does not reward imported narratives. The stories that succeed are those that connect global expertise with Vietnam’s own challenges and development priorities, with less global messaging adapted at the final stage, and more communications built with local understanding from the beginning.

Every market has its own policy priorities, media landscapes, and business contexts that shape how stories are received. The common mistake is assuming a successful regional narrative can simply be replicated market by market.

That is why our approach has always centred on strategic narrative localisation, led by experienced in-country teams with deep local knowledge and long-standing relationships in the markets they serve. It is this combination of local judgement, cultural understanding, and regional perspective that helps multinational organisations build communications strategies that resonate where they matter most.

If you are planning to enter Vietnam or adapt your regional communications strategy for the market, speak with our team about how strategic narrative localisation can help your organisation build relevance and influence.

How do we decide who, or what, to trust?

Historically, trust was shaped by proximity. Shared geography, cultural familiarity, professional networks, old school ties, university connections, and community reputation all played a role. People trusted what they knew, and often, who they knew.

But greater global integration has made us all more fragmented. The expansion of businesses into new markets has stretched supply chains across continents, and digital platforms have reduced the need for physical presence. Information moves globally, often detached from the context in which it was produced.

We were told that trust would become easier to build. Organisations are more visible than ever. Leadership teams are more accessible. Stakeholders can evaluate companies in real time through media, social platforms, search, reviews, analysts, regulators, employees, and customers. Yet the opposite has happened.

Different stakeholders now interpret the same organisation through different information sources. A company may be respected in one market and viewed with suspicion in another. Even within a single market, perceptions can vary sharply depending on who is speaking and where that information is shared.

How does a business build trust, then?

Corporate messaging is often built around consistent, unified narratives that can be deployed across markets. These are, understandably, seen as a sign of professionalism and message discipline.

But consistency is not the same as trust, and much less credibility. Credibility is shaped by context and depends on how messages align with local expectations. A message that signals reliability in one market may feel distant or tone-deaf in another

This tension is particularly visible in Asia, where markets differ significantly in language, culture, regulation, and media behaviour.

For organisations managing public relations in Asia, the assumption that one communications strategy can work uniformly across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, India, or Australia is increasingly difficult to sustain.

Trust is accumulated locally through consistently attuned engagement. It is shaped by how companies show they understand the markets in which they operate.

Communication is only one part of the equation

The role of communications is not simply to repeat the same message across markets. It is to understand how that message will be received, what local concerns it triggers, which stakeholders carry influence, and where trust already exists or has been damaged.

The broader point is that trust cannot be engineered at scale in the same way as products, platforms, or supply chains. It is assembled incrementally, and often differently, across markets. A global narrative may provide direction, but local market knowledge determines whether that narrative is credible and trustworthy.

For organisations expanding across Asia, the real challenge will be whether they can build credibility in markets where trust is shaped by local context and local relationships.

That is why local knowledge remains one of the most important advantages in cross-market communications.

In the personal world, it means “don’t ask,” and in the business context, it’s usually a problem to be solved with some associated empire building. After all, if it’s complicated and I know what, how, and why, then I am King or Queen in that particular domain.

In Asia, complexity is not something to run away from. It is something to understand, navigate, and make work.

To those unfamiliar with the region, decision-making can seem slow. Consensus-building may look cumbersome and anyone doing business in Japan knows just what that means. Market structures can appear fragmented and inefficient.

Yet Asia does not merely function despite complexity. In many cases, it thrives because of it.

This is not unique to boardrooms; it is visible in everyday systems that outsiders often underestimate.

A small window into organised chaos

Take India’s Dabbawallas. Every day, Mumbai’s lunchbox delivery network moves thousands of meals across one of the world’s most densely populated cities with remarkable precision. The system is not powered by advanced technology or rigid central control but it works because of deep local knowledge.

Similarly, Southeast Asia’s hawker centres may look chaotic to an outsider: independent stallholders, dense foot traffic, shifting customer patterns, multilingual exchanges, and unwritten rules about space. Yet these centres feed cities, support livelihoods, preserve culture, and respond quickly to changes in demand.

Both examples show that complexity is not always a problem to be simplified. When properly understood, it can be organised and highly effective, and Asia understands this because it was forged in diversity.

Why businesses need to adapt, not simplify

The assumption that systems must become simpler to become more effective is not universally valid. In diverse environments, especially, attempts to impose uniformity can create friction rather than efficiency.

To external observers, the emphasis on consensus can be mistaken for indecision, a preference for gradual progress can be misread as a lack of urgency, and nuanced stakeholder environments can be seen as an obstacle to action.

These characterisations minimise the need for flexibility and continuity, which the world today increasingly shows are critical characteristics.

A network of difference and commonality

Asian markets are also not a monolith, and every system has its own unique characteristics, but the region’s underlying strength lies in a pragmatic give-and-take approach.

Too many market entry plans treat Asia as a single market. They assume messages, stakeholder expectations, media narratives, and policy concerns will travel easily across borders. In reality, what works in Singapore may not work in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, or the Philippines.

National institutions, cultural expectations, and industry relationships all differ across those markets, and understanding those layers can’t be achieved through desk research. It requires local market knowledge on how trust is built, how influence moves, how media narratives form, how government and industry stakeholders engage, and how reputation is earned or lost.

In a world increasingly defined by volatility, systems that absorb variation may prove more durable than those designed only for uniformity. The lesson is not that complexity should be embraced for its own sake but that complexity, when properly understood and managed, can become a source of stability.

For organisations expanding across Asia, local knowledge is not a supporting detail. It is the advantage that allows strategy, communications, and reputation to work across markets that are connected, but never identical.

Imagine this: a potential customer asks artificial intelligence (AI) about your brand. Not your website, not your latest campaign, but just a simple question about how you create value. The answer comes back instantly. It sounds confident. maybe even decisive.

But it’s wrong. Or worse, incomplete. This is the new frontier for brands. A quiet but fundamental shift in which people discover and interpret brands via AI. Increasingly, they’re not doing so through direct interaction with websites or even traditional media. They’re asking AI for answers – and then making decisions based on what comes back. So if AI doesn’t know your brand, neither do your potential customers.

This is where some of the misconceptions about public relations (PR) and communications start to show. There’s still a tendency to treat visibility as the end goal: get the coverage, publish the press release, update the website. Job done. But that model assumes a human is doing the interpretation. Increasingly, they’re not.

AI systems don’t “see” your brand the way people do. They piece it together from fragments such as structured data, media coverage, or third-party mentions and then prioritise what appears consistent and authoritative. If your narrative is scattered or contradictory, the version that surfaces may not be the one you intended.

This matters because of how people make buying decisions. In B2C, it’s second nature: no one buys a restaurant meal, a skincare product, or even a pair of headphones without checking what others are saying. Reviews, comparisons, recommendations are all part of the process.

Yet in B2B, there’s still a lingering belief that decisions are purely rational, contained within decks and demos. As if buyers aren’t also quietly asking,

“What are people actually saying about this company?”.

AI is now mediating those signals.

That introduces a new layer of reputation management: machine interpretation. It’s no longer enough for your brand to exist in the right places. It needs to be understood accurately by the systems that shape visibility in the first place.

In practical terms, this changes how we think about content and messaging. Isolated press releases and one-off campaigns won’t cut it. Organisations need structured, consistent, and authoritative narratives that hold up across owned channels, third-party coverage, and the broader information ecosystem.

This is why earned media is critical, despite how often it’s underestimated. Not just for human readership, but because it feeds the informational substrate AI relies on. Consistent, credible coverage builds awareness, but it more importantly trains the system on who you are.

And the shift is already being recognised. Gartner predicts that PR and earned media budgets will double by 2027. Not because it’s fashionable, but because companies are realising they need guidance in shaping how they are interpreted.

This also introduces new disciplines into communications teams. Narrative consistency audits, AI visibility monitoring, structured content strategies are no longer nice-to-haves. They sit alongside traditional PR, but require a clearer understanding of how information is processed, retrieved, and recombined.

There’s a broader implication here. If AI becomes a primary interface between organisations and audiences, then absence is effectively invisibility. Misrepresentation, meanwhile, can snowball with minimal to no friction.

The role of communications is expanding, whether we like it or not. It’s no longer just about influencing perception through media. It’s about ensuring that both humans and machines arrive at the same, accurate understanding.

Because in this environment, PR isn’t about pushing messages out. It’s about holding your narrative together everywhere it could be interpreted.

The organisations that adapt earliest won’t just be the most visible. They’ll be the ones that are actually understood. If this shift feels mind boggling, it’s probably time to rethink how your brand shows up. Get in touch to explore how to elevate your PR approach to this new landscape.

Communications is no longer a downstream function. It sits much closer to the centre of decision-making and is expected to inform strategy, not simply support it. That shift is what separates a traditional PR practitioner from a business consultant, and it is increasingly the standard today.

A successful career in communications rests on more than an interest in storytelling and media, but around the ability to influence business outcomes, navigate ambiguity, and operate as a trusted advisor.

1) What does it really mean to operate as a business consultant rather than a traditional PR practitioner?

The focus should not be on delivering a list of activities, but on understanding commercial objectives and defining how communications can help achieve them. It requires consultants to engage with leadership teams as partners and bring informed perspectives on markets, stakeholders, and risk.

To do this credibly, intellectual rigour is essential—particularly in complex B2B sectors such as technology, energy, and finance. These industries do not stand still, and neither can the consultants advising within them.

2) How do you build the intellectual rigour needed for complex sectors?

The most effective teams cultivate curiosity early and sustain it over time, creating an environment where continuous learning is expected. In practice, that often feels closer to an ongoing academic discipline than a conventional job. Those who succeed tend to be individuals who are comfortable navigating ambiguity, interrogating new ideas, and applying them in a commercial context.

Any communications organisation worth its salt will demand that its people are able to reconcile vastly different market dynamics, regulatory environments, and cultural expectations. Consistency cannot come at the expense of relevance, and vice versa. A structured methodology helps bridge this gap.

By combining sector expertise with real-time market insight, consultants can map a client’s proposition against what matters locally, while maintaining a coherent regional narrative. Cybersecurity is a clear example: priorities may differ between governments, enterprises, and individuals, but the underlying demand creates a unifying thread that can be adapted across markets.

3) How do you balance local nuance with regional consistency in Asia?

Execution at-scale also depends on how teams work together. A regional client may interact with a single point of contact, but delivery is distributed across multiple countries. Internal alignment, therefore, hinges on treating colleagues as a core stakeholder group and not just an operational resource. That ensures clear communication, shared accountability, and a stronger sense of collective ownership. When done well, it allows clients to engage once and trust that the strategy will be executed consistently across markets. The same principle applies externally, particularly with media, where long-term relationships tend to deliver more value than transactional engagement.

4) How do values influence decision-making in high-pressure consulting environments?

Values, meanwhile, move from abstract statements to practical tools when the stakes are high. Empathy, respect, integrity, and courage are not theoretical but rather they shape how consultants respond under pressure.

Whether navigating a sensitive issue, advising against a risky course of action, or managing competing stakeholder interests, these principles provide a framework for decision-making. Core values based on mutual respect and understanding help guide a communications professional to provide counsel with depth and nuance. This also ensures that advice is not only commercially sound, but also measured and sustainable.

For individuals considering their next move in the industry the bar has shifted. Technical execution remains important, but it is no longer sufficient on its own. The expectation is for consultants who can connect the dots between business strategy, market context, and stakeholder engagement.

Organisations are increasingly seeking proactive and solutions-oriented communications rather than a reactive service. That is why at Priority Consultants we focus less on quizzing business leaders about what they need and more on where they want to go and what stands in the way. If you are a communications professional who fits this profile, drop us a line.
