Dreaded MFD on 2006 Prius with Lockpick3+

I recently started having the error “External system not connected.” when trying to switch to my nav system. I have a 2006 with 34500 miles but am outside of 3 years so not under warranty. I took the car in and told them that it was a known problem, gave them the service bulletin, told them it was being called the "dreaded MFD" on PriusChat, etc.

They took the dash apart and took out my lockpick and it started working properly so they are claiming that it is related to lockpick. They also said they called Toyota and the service bulletin was related to older vehicles and they have fixed the problem that caused it in my year. I've had lockpick installed for more than 2 years now with no issues am thinking it is a scapegoat. However, I just picked it up and sure enough it is working ok.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen errors caused by lockpick. I figure it is some kind of a lose connection that got reconnected when they moved the harness and unit around and it will likely fail again down the road but I just wanted to check if anyone else has seen this situation.

I have had poor reception with my XM radio when traveling North and East but no problem when traveling West and South. The problem is the XM antenna is placed inside the car at the right side of the windshield. Since the signal comes from the south west, going north and east blocks the signal. If you read the XM guide it tells you NOT to place the antenna inside the car. I wrote to Toyota and they told me their technicians thought this was the best place for the antenna and they would not make any concessions. I would like to know if anyone else is having this problem. If so we could have a class action against Toyota to find a fix for this problem or refund the price of the XM option.

I have bought an iPod adapter for my 05 prius and have looked at ll the options for mounting the adapter in the glove box. I wanted it to look professional and here are some options to mount options for the 3.5mm jack for audio input that will work. Some people just leave a wire hanging but if you want a cleaner look you can try one of these:

AQUATIC AQ-AUX-3 3.5MM AUX $9.39
Available on Amazon

iSimple - Dash-Mount Audio Input Kit Model: PDM35 $19.99
Available throught Best Buy

For the iPod connector, I just placed a plastic/rubber grommit over the wire that was snug enough that the wire could be tucked back into the hole while not in use.

I will update this thread with a photo in the future.

Hope this helps someone.

I have a 2005 Prius, factory nav, and the 8.1 North America DVD. Several questions:

1) Where do I install the DVD? I tried in the CD player, doh! My dealer is no help.
2) Will the new DVD update the user interface as well as the maps? If not, is there any way to update the user interface? (I am told that the later models had much friendlier and more effective user interfaces.)
3) I have seen several references to screen-enabled hacks that allow the user to enter data while moving, but the links to the the detailed instructions don't seem to work. Can someone either give me the instructions or inform me why I'm having trouble with the links?

Thanks.

so yesterday, after much reading and stalling, i had a VAIS SL2i UP ipod interface installed into my 05 and my wife's 06 prius. i had the install done at my local toyota dealer in case anything went wrong...

a few observations:

MY 2005
1) unit was originally configured to pose as a CD changer. unit cannot see the entire library, only playlists. interface is sluggish and playlists limited to 99 songs. not impressed.

2) i had the dealer reconfigure dip switches so VAIS would pose as an MD changer instead. much improved interface speed and playlists can now hold up to 999 songs. definitely the better of the 2 options.

3) one annoyance, CD text on display shows playlist and song title or artist. i'd much rather have artist and song title, but haven't found a way to make that happen.

4) sound quality is vastly superior to my older peripheral ipod2car unit, especially in bass response. sound is fuller yet undistorted. the best i've had to date.

5) connecting ipod disables local ipod control. everything must be done from the interface.

2006 prius:
1) vastly improved control options over my 05. can drill down by playlist, artist, album, genre, etc. can select individual tracks from touchscreen.

2) accessing artist list is incredibly slow. impractical. the best way to get to a particular artist is to include them in a playlist. scrolling from "A" to the middle of the alphabet incredibly time consuming. no way i've found to jump to a particular letter or speed up the browsing process.

3) listing by album occasionally displays incorrect album/artist information. have no idea why. problem doesn't seem present in artist mode

4) sound quality is excellent

one nice thing, the VAIS supports a wide variety of models. both my wife's ancient GEN 4 ipod and my ipod touch were supported. it also supports iphones (as long as it's the SL2i UP model and not the older SL2i) with both playback and charging.

final conclusion: excellent sound but occasionally quirky. unit is more expensive than DICE silverline, but it sounds great and obvious elements like cable and dock connector seem sturdy.

unit was $250 and i paid $100 for installation.

hope this helps those who might be interested....

I saw there is a used Prius 2005 at my toyota dealer but they didn't have it in yet. I wanted to know, is that LCD screen with the graphics of the engine and battery standard on all prius 2005 models (or even all prius'?) or is it an optional add on?

Also, is there any way to connect my own audio player to it's sound system (even a cassette reader so I could use a cassette adapter at least)?

Well, my dad decided it would be a good idea to suction-cup mount a gps to the screen in my mom's prius when they took a road trip to California. This ended up putting some fractures in the screen. As her's is a prius without nav, this isn't too big a deal for the most part, and she'll eventually go for a replacement from one of the salvage dealers.

In the mean time, though, she had the audio way toward the back speakers to play music for my kids, and the button to move the audio forward is exactly the spot that won't work. So, I was wondering if there is a roundabout way to adjust the audio without using the screen. This is a 2005 non-nav, non-JBL, single-disk Prius.

also posted in knowledge base..but desperate enough to consider offering $$ for a decent solution..

Does anybody know of a way to easily transfer personal data, i.e. the phone book or the nav info, from a 2008 to a 2010? I just talked with a dealer who said the only way is to enter the data manually. I guess we are supposed to sit in the parking lot on "new car day" and go through the whole thing with the cars side by side? My wife so hated that from the awkward and tedious process (just the phone book part) in the 2008, she may veto the 2010 over this. In a world that is fast becoming all about moving data, it seems inconceivable that Toyota or anybody would fail to consider this an important aspect of maintaining a loyal, returning customer base. Frankly, I was a little shocked when told we would have to do it all over again. Who knows the hack, or the absolute bottom line fact that it just can't be done (sigh)?

I have a 2004 Prius with JBL in-dash 6 disc changer, and Navigation system. I'd like to find an "aux in" kit that would add a 3.5mm plug so I could plug in my ipod or other mp3 player. I don't want anything fancy, no charging, text, usb, just 2 channel analog audio in to the factory head unit. I do want it to be hard wired, no FM or tape adapter.

I've spent an hour searching the archives and it seems the only aftermarket kits I could find would also disable the CD changer, which is not desirable to me.

It seems like the coastal lockpick would work but starting at $229 I'd like to find something cheaper.

Is there anyone with the 2004 In Dash changer who has installed a 3.5mm adapter that works?

Question guys,
So my cell phone does not have bluetooth (yes, i know- it's that old), but my wife does. So I have been putting the numbers from her phone into the Prius phonebook, but I have a question. When I get my next phone which will have bluetooth will the phonebook work with it too or will I have to set numbers up from it as well? I guess what I am asking is if the numbers are in the Prius regardless of what phone is actually linked to it or can those numbers that I have saved thus far only work when my wife's cell is in the car (meaning I will have to reprogram many of the same numbers to link it to my phone). I realize that I can set up two users in the Prius phonebook but many of the numbers will be the same between my wife and my phone...
thanks guys for the help
