Understanding NiMH hypercycles (to prolong Prius HV battery life)

What is hypercycle?

Hypercycle is a technique to use a rechargeable NiMH battery to extend it's life cycle and maximize overall usage.

Example:

10% Depth of Discharge x 300,000 cycles = 3,000,000 overall percentages
60% Depth of Discharge x 10,000 cycles = 600,000 overall percentages

The difference is 5 times more in overall usage.

How do I hypercycle NiMH battery?

The short answer is to use it a little at a time.

As the graph above shows, you would get about 700 cycles if you use 100% at a time. This means you charge it fully and draining it until empty. Isn't it how you use those rechargeable AA NiMH batteries? Yes, the worst possible way and now you know. If you discharge it at 60%, NiMH would be good for 10,000 cycles! That's more than 27 years if you use one cycle every single day! This gets better with 50% depth of discharge as it would double the cycles to 20,000. A little dirty secret NiMH battery charger and rechargeable battery manufactures don't want you to know.

How does Prius use the NiMH traction battery?

Prius normally uses less than 10% at a time. It is also known as one hypercycle. Prius HV battery is used when the gas engine is inefficient and therefore unlike an electric vehicle, no more than 10% is usually used at a time. This understanding enables NiMH to last 300,000 cycles! Toyota has warranty for 10 years or 150,000 miles on the pack. This means, Toyota believes an owner will average 2 HV cycles per miles. If an owner averages 1 HV cycle per mile, the HV battery pack would last 300,000 miles! If an owner drives mostly highway and use only 0.5 HV cycle per mile, it should last 600,000 miles!

I finally got some time to write up what I learned and studied about NiMH over 5 years. I came up with term "hypercycling" to easily explain why Prius battery would last a very long time to those acquiring minds new to hybrids.

I am sharing information here to learn from many knowledgeable people. I am no expert but the information is what I believe to be accurate from my experience. Feel free to contribute your thoughts.

I'm having a problem clearing old destinations on my '08 Prius Nav and running version 8.1.
I can delete some from "My Places" in the Memory Points, but not all the destinations.
If I follow the manual on pages 67-68, it doesn't take me to the screens described where it shows a list and I can choose.
I'm not sure if I'm in the right screen, but it's all I can find. Otherwise the Nav works fine.
Can someone take my hand and guide me step by step better than the manual?
Usually, I'm pretty good at following these kinds of directions.
BTW, if I put in a route and then delete, it simply puts it back, or doesn't delete, even with a prompt. On page 68, I don't see the screen depicted that says "Delete Destinations" and my list.
Thanks,
Fred

Recently we were in LA and wanted to drive on surface roads, as opposed to the freeways. We opted out if interstates on the screen that lets you select your options but the Nav Nazi refused to cooperate and kept trying to route us so as to use the freeway. A couple of times our destination was straight ahead on the road we were on but we kept being nagged to drive out of the way so as to be on a freeway.
I need to be enlightened as to what I am doing wrong or doesn't it actually accept input from this screen? Hmm, maybe I was moving every time I chose to avoid freeways. Could that be it? Thanks for your help.

Hello: It was suggested in an earlier post that I have the codes on my 02 classic read to determine why it just quit. Can anyone tell me what scanner or software I can purchase that will allow me to read and clear all of the codes on my car? I checked the old posts but see mostly info on gen II and up. Right now I can't take it to the dealer since I have the battery pack out of it waiting for a used one to come. And I prefer to work on it myself if at all possible anyway.I have it at my friends garage and he has a snap on scan tool but it only goes to 2000 and will not read the codes in generic mode. Any help would be much appreciated. Wayne

hello everyone: I haven't posted on here in a while just had no problems. I have a 2002 classic with 150,000 miles. Today while driving on the freeway at 65 a red light came on in the nav display and the dash with the exclamation point. Also the brake light is illuminated. Complete loss of power. I had it towed and the gas engine starts right up but it will only move forward slowly also will not back up at all. All mlights are still on the small battery is new last year. Any ideas on what it may be?:( I love the car but do not want to put thousands into it. Thanks in advance for any help. Wayne
