Hello all,
My prius started making a weird noise today. There are no check engine lights, or anything lit up on the dash, or anything out of the ordinary. The engine starts and there's this horrendous vibration all over the car. It sounds exactly like a subwoofer in the vehicle. Its so bad that the rear view mirror is vibrating. It only does this at low throttle response. If I floor it, it goes away. If I hold the brake and hit the throttle i can get it to keep doing it. I searched, but the only thing close to this was in very cold weather, and don't believe this is my problem as it was in the upper 80's today. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time,
John

I understand that cadmium is a serious pollutant and was wondering if NMH is a euphemism used to get away from mentioning cadmium? (I only ask because one of the Nickle Cadmium batteriesfor my rechargable drill just died and I was surprised they still use cadmium in batteries).
Second, why are there separate Tech forums for the Gen 2 and Gen 3 Priuses? Are they that different?

To anyone inclined to chime in:

My '09 Prius has recently started to create an interesting sound from the engine compartment right after I park and shut it down. Scenario:

Temps here in AZ have been very high - typically 108. After driving for an hour or so with the AC on (of course), when I shut the car down and get out I hear the coolant storage pump come on for a half-minute or so then go off (normal), but then I hear a very low-level hissing-groaning sound (not a sharp hissing, but a hissing sound with a bunch of bass note in it), that almost that gives me the impression of coolant slowly moving somewhere within the system. This sound continues for a couple minutes and as time passes, it slowly decrease in amplitude until it completely stops. I definately do not have an external leak where I'm loosing coolant cuz the resovour tank level hasn't dropped. And one more thing: it didn't do this when the temps were cooler, and I likely think it will go away when temps cool off again in the fall.

Just curious if anyone else has noticed this.

When the Prius is initially warming up, it can be frustrating when you are trying to glide downhill or even on a flat surface and the engine will run. Isn't it better to pulse, then put it in neutral then put it back into drive and pulse again, so that the engine can warm up exclusively when you pulse? I use this method too when I see a big hill up ahead that I know will warm the engine up and I dont' want to warm the engine up gliding to it. What do you think?

Would there be any adverse consequences from having a little extra fluid it the transaxle? I wasn't able to get the car completely level for my last change (only a few hundred miles ago) so I wound up draining it and putting in all 4 quarts of fluid, which came right up to the fill plug. But given the angle, I'm concerned that this is really a couple of millimeters above the max fill level.

Given that this is more like a manual transmission than an automatic I can't think of a rational reason to be concerned. But I don't know everything. Thoughts?

Okay, I have a few questions....

I've just noticed that when being on the passenger side the plastic by my feet wobbles if I push it slightly...any ideas?

I know I need to read my manual but I've been very busy lately...when should I get my car checked out? I've had it since this February and have 2500 miles...

Also....my Prius has felt more "rugged" lately. I am assuming it is the tire pressure but I don't know if I should fill them up in such a hot, humid, climate which I live in (I live in Houston, TX, it's at least 97*F and humid all the time). And I don't know if it is me but my Prius makes noise when accelerating (my music is normally loud, but I want to be caucious).

Just a few hours ago my Prius jerked during a slow turn...does that mean anything?

Any other advice would be great, and sorry for the long question.

I expect my half-shaft to last another 20,000 if not less. Because of my abusive way of driving, I feel that changing the fluid would be the best insurance. However, Durant Toyota in weatherford & Freeman Toyota in Hurst told me that they do not perform the transaxle fluid change for the Prius. Does anyone know where I can get the fluid change performed in the DFW metroplex?

This being the first ATF sample since the transmission was new, the higher-than-average metals
and silicon are not surprising. Universal averages show typical wear levels for this type of transmission after
about 19,600 miles on the oil. The elevated metals readings are from new parts wearing-in, as well as
accumulated from normal use. Silicon is from sealers. The viscosity was a little light, likely from the long
ATF use. The TAN reading of 1.6 shows the ATF was somewhat acidic. Check back after 20K miles on the next oil.
