1. The engine needs to spin at or above 42 MPH. Does the system determine when the engine needs to spin by the road speed, or perhaps according to MG1 RPM?

2. Does the control unit primarily determine how much gas to give the engine and then have MG1 seek the highest torque it can get without causing the engine to slow down? Or does the control unit tell MG1 how hard to work and then the engine responds by demanding enough gas? Or perhaps a little of both?

Any answers would be appreciated.

Started having an Intermittant problem today with my '07 Prius that I have owned for about a month. It was a warm day in the high 80's, so I had the AC on as i ran errands. I stopped atsandy ore, and was inside for a couple minutes. When I came back and started the car, the AC and blower were both nonfunctional. I played around with the touch panel controls, but could not get them to work.

So I went on to my next stop, and the same thing happened. But this time I noticed that the gas engine did not start right away - it waited until the car started moving a ways before it (the engine) came on. I then pulled over and played with the controls some more, and apparently did something right because the AC and blower came on and worked fine until my next stop.

Now I come back out and start the car, and the same thing happens again. Again I pull off after the engine finally starts, and again get the AC and blower to work after playing with the controls. I drive home, and park in the garage.

A couple hours later, I need to run another errand, and this time everything works fine. So it seems that I have an Intermittant problem, perhaps related to engine or compressor temperature in some way. Does anyone have any ideas what might be happening and how I might fix it?

I posted recently about how my traction battery seems to be showing some signs of weakness by filling to 8 green bars mach more rapidly than it used to do.
Since we're now approaching winter here in the southern hemisphere, I'm just wondering how much the cooler temperatures might be influencing this?

Not that it's exactly cold btw, I'm really only talking temperatures around 50F to 55F here.

Two questions.

I read somewhere that in the Gen 2 you need to come to a stop in order to get into S3. Is this true? If so, could you hypothetically leave your driveway and never stop and 400 miles later be in S3?

Regarding the 12V battery, the voltage is always 13.2 when I'm driving around. When I'm in park or neutral, the voltage goes straight to 13.8. Is this normal?

Hello,
I recently purchased a 2006 Prius from a Toyota dealership. I noticed that the brake light comes on when I start it, even if the brake isn't on. I took it back to the dealership, and they worked on it for a day, drove it around, and apparently certified it as in normal working condition. They said something about cleaning the cables and harnesses (or something like that). Anyway, I took it home, and noticed that every time I start it WITH my foot on the brake, I have no issue; the light stays off. Every time I start it WITHOUT my foot on the brake, the light comes on, and I don't get the ready light - the car won't go into drive. This situation occurs without fail, which leads me to believe it may be designed like this. Is this normal, or do I have a defective car? Tomorrow my exchange period expires, so should I bring it back for this, or is it a normal function of the 06 Prius? Thank you!

Early Indications of HV battery Weakness (@91k miles)

Firstly let me say that the car is still running perfectly and giving great MPG, but I just wanted to document some early signs of traction battery...

Firstly let me say that the car is still running perfectly and giving great MPG, but I just wanted to document some early signs of traction battery weakness and see if anyone else has notice these particular symptoms.

1. Descending hills I get up to the full 8 green bars much sooner than it used to do. When I first got the car (at about 40k miles) I rarely saw it top out the battery charge. It needed to descend about 80 meters (change in elevation) of fairly steep hills to go from the nominal six bars up to all eight green. Now it seems I can max it out with as little as about 45m change in elevation (if it's steep and taken slowly).

2. SOC anomalies after full 8 green charge. After topping out the battery to max charge, I've noticed lately that it seems to remain up at 8-green for longer (under EV driving) than previously. Normally you'd think this would be a good thing, as it would seem to indicate the battery is holding lots of energy, but it actually seems to be caused by errors in the Prius's SOC estimate. What I've noticed is I can drive (flats) in full electric mode, and it stays up at 8 (then 7) green bars for quite a long time (longer than previously), but when it eventually drops back to 6 (blue) bars, then it almost immediately falls to 2 or 3 bars. It's like it's miscalculating the SOC, and all of a sudden it realizes it's wrong and make a correction of -3 to -4 bars!

Has anyone else noticed these issue?
