This article is a world view on the water situation we're so oblivious about. Its effects on the local economy as well its global impact. Since every thing in this economy of ours is related, the effects of rise of price of water will show its ugly head somewhere or the other. I feel we're stuck in a pointless situation no matter which way we turn for trying commodify something which is free. All we really need to be is conscious and think twice before wasting it.

From Waste To Water: Greywater Reuse In The Middle East ( Part 2 )

Greywater is household wastewater from kitchen sinks and bathroom tubs - anything except for raw sewage. In many countries in the Middle East and North African region,untreated greywater is used for irrigation purposes due to the environmentally andpolitically determined water scarcity of the region, and is stored in privately constructed holding tanks. Along with risks to human health in the holding and reuse of this water forirrigation, the hiring of private parties to regularly empty these tanks is a cost burden onhouseholds, as public infrastructure is not always available to do so, especially in rural areas. The safe treatment of this water can provide an alternative to other costly andsources of irrigation. But how can this water be treated in a cost effective andsimple way for households to own and utilize? This short film documents the catalyst, innovation, implementation and outcome of onesolution, initially developed in the West bank and now adopted for use in Jordan and Lebanon.

We usually have difficulty in keeping track of the amount of water we use in a shower. We can also conserve water in the shower by keeping it short. However it is more obvious that when bathing with a bucket is easier to keep track of the amount used. :)

About World Water Day

The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.

The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March of each year as the World Day for Water by adopting a resolution.This world day for water was to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development contained in chapter 18 (Fresh Water Resources) of Agenda 21.

States were invited to devote the Day to implement the UN recommendations and set up concrete activities as deemed appropriate in the national context.

The Subcommittee welcomes the assistance offered by IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre to contribute to an information network centre in support of the observance of the Day by Governments, as required.

Members of the “Pro Active Water Conservation!” make small changes in their lifestyles by being sensitive to ‘water abuse’ on an EVERYDAY basis.

If it means turning off a leaky tap, using water less lavishly than normal when bathing or washing etc. by acting now rather than later, to avoid any regrets in our near future.

Changed perceptions on water wastage by reducing its everyday abuse.
