How I improved bounce rate by 77% in 60 days

The higher bounce rate has always been a matter of grave concern for the struggling bloggers like me. They feel it quite disgusting if out of each 100 visitors of your blog 77 of them just exit after reading that post where they landed. It is also not confirm either they read the whole of the landed post, its first paragraph or just they cast a cursory look over it and go away.

Different pro bloggers tell different sets of tips and tricks to improve the bounce rate. They advise to display reasonable number of related posts just after the contents of your each post. Some of them suggest showing five to seven posts with their continuation separately on Home page. Some others guys want you to offer an extensive list of latest and popular posts in the sidebar of your blog. They all are right but, by following them, we cannot improve the bounce rate beyond a certain level. Is it, so?

Let’s calculate how I improved bounce rate by 77%

In this article, I am going to show how you did I improve the bounce rate of my blog “Pollution Pollution” from worrisome 77% to just 17% in two months. If we calculate in percentage terms, it shows that I managed to hold 60% more visitors on my blog in just two months. Here is its calculation.

Difference in bounce rate: 60%
Percentage change: 60/77x100=77%

How did I do that?

Now come to the main question you all have must in your mind. How did I improve my bounce rate from whopping 77% to just 17% in just two months? Did I apply any rocket science of SEO? Did I extraordinarily improve my contents, no not at all. For your kind information, I am a newbie, nonprofessional, amateur and ordinary blogger who don’t have time to give more than half an hour to my blog daily. How did I do that? Don’t worry I am not going to sell here any product, or service that will sink your bounce rate.

First look at my daily visitors with higher bounce rate

Look at the number of monthly visitors of my site in the above screen shot. That is more than 13,000 per month. It means nearly 400 visitors daily. It had only been six months in October 2012 since, I started my blog in May 2012. It was surprising for me to have such a decent number of visitors on my blog daily. However, that was not much perturbing for me because I read at most of the pro bloggers that Google gives an advantage to new bloggers by referring more and more traffic just to let internet community know about a newly begun blog or website. I was satisfied over this assumption, but my gigantic bounce rate was equally so worrisome for me. You can see this was 76.86%, in the above screenshot.

Irrelevance of all types is a fatal blow to your blog

This was the secret that made me improve the bounce rate of my blog. Everyone talks about the significance of relevance in blogging, but a few tell us relevance of all types equally counts a lot. If our contents are not relevant to our niche, Google Panda will lash us. If the design of a website is irrelevant to the content, the visitors would take a ridiculous impression of it. Yes, that is the secret which I am going to share with everyone.

My social media friends visit my blog in my love

I increased traffic on my blog though running a massive campaign on social media. I am an addict of Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. I actively participate with my friends, followers and contacts on them. I have limited circles on all these three accounts, but I am very much connected with each of my social-media friend. I don’t forget to wish them separately as much as possible. I send them gifts on their birthdays, promotions and success in their exams. In short, I have strong bonding with them. What they give me in return. Whenever I shared my post with them a flock of visitors, I find on my blog soon after my sharing. They all are my friends, but none of them has any interests in my niche “pollution”. In courtesy, they just visit the post I link to them and they get back just after clicking it. So obviously, the bounce rate of my site has to increase astronomically high.

I stopped sharing with irrelevant audience?

In the first month of November 2012, I realized the significance of the relevant traffic. Thus, I stopped sharing my posts to social media. Then hell literally fell on me. The traffic on my blog nose-dived. If blog traffic sinks from 400 daily visitors to just 100-150 visitors, what can happen to a novice blogger like me. I used to miss my heart beats sometimes because I was and am very particular to the niche of my blog. This is an abundant source of solace for me that, in this polluted environment I am doing something to safe the environment.

Bounce rate went deep down

However, after a while I also felt that bounce rate of my blog is going down and down and in previous two months it reached at 17%. That was a pleasant surprise for me. It showed that now I am getting the real customers at my shop. If I am selling flowers no one will stand in my shop, who wants to buy a gun or pistol. Now I can communicate with them easily. Our concerns, worries and hopes are common. This is the community which I want to develop to further my cause of a pollution-free environment.

When Google completely indexes your sitemap and now when someone will search any keyword in Google after that if that keyword belongs to any post of you then your post may comes in search results. Submit Blogger Sitemap To Google

So, This tutorial contains two main and important steps. In the first step we'll verify our blog in Google webmaster tools so that your blog may easily index completely and quickly and in the second step we'll submit the sitemap. So let's begin with first step.

Verify Your Blog In Google Webmaster Tools

In order to verify your blog, Go To Google Webmaster Tools. Now there you will see your blog in the homepage and that is automatically added to webmaster tools because Blogger is owned by Google and it used to automatically add blog in webmaster tools for better service. If your blog is not added then you also add it manually. So now follow the simple steps below to verify your blog.

Go To Webmaster Tools Homepage >> Look for your blog
Click "Manage Site" Button In The Right Side and Go To "Add or Remove Users"

Click "Manage Site Owners" and Go To Verify Using Different Method
Tick Mark "HTML TAG"
Now a meta tag code will appear, copy it and save it in notepad or any other text editor.

Now open a new tab in browser [ Note : Don't Close Webmaster Tools Tab ]
Go To Blogger >> Template >> Edit HTML
Search <head> and paste the meta tag below <head> which you've saved in notepad.
Click "Save Template"
Open the webmaster tools tab and click on "VERIFY" button in the bottom of the page.

After clicking verify button, You will see the congratulations message that you've successfully verified your blog in webmaster tools. Now it's time to submit the sitemap. Let's jump to next step.

Submitting Sitemap To Google

Go To Your Blog's Dashboard
Click "Optimization" In The Left Side and Go To "Sitemaps"

Click On "Add/Test Sitemap"

Copy The Code Below and Paste It In The Text Box and Press "Submit Sitemap"

Note : The above code is for 1 to 500 posts and if you have more than 500 posts published on your blog then just copy the two lines below and paste it on that text box and add it twice.

CONGRATULATIONS ! You've have successfully submitted sitemap to Google. Now you have to wait about a week for completing the indexation.

What Areas You Should Disallow For Crawling In Your Blog?

If you disallow those areas then you blog will be more search engine friendly and that areas are Search Result pages, Archive pages and labels pages. However, Below I'm giving you an search engine friendly robots.txt file which will help you a lot.

Enable Custom Robots.txt File In Blogger

So, This process is so easy just follow the simple steps below.

Go To Blogger >> Settings >> Search Preferences
Look For Custom Robots.Txt Section In The Bottom and Edit It.

Now a check box will appear tick mark "Yes" and a box will appear where you have to write the robots.txt file. So if you want to use our file then copy the code below and paste it in that box.

After adding the file now you must be wanted to understand your file that what we have allowed and disallowed. So, I've listed every command with detail below.

Explanations

User-agent: Mediapartners-Google : So, This is a first command which is for those blogs which are using Google AdSense if you are not using Google AdSense then remove it. In this command, we're telling the AdSense's separate robot that crawl all pages which are having AdSense Ads.
User-agent: * : Here the User-agent is calling the robot and * is for all the search engine's robots like Google, Yahoo etc.
Disallow: /search?q=* : This line tells the search engine's crawler not to crawl the search pages.
Disallow: /*?updated-max=* : This one disallows the search engine's crawler to do not index or crawl label or navigation pages.
Allow: / : This one allows to index the homepage or your blog.
Sitemap : So this last command tells the search engine's crawler to index the every new or updated post.

How Can I Add a Command For Disallowing Any Page?

So if you are interested in adding your own command then you can also do it. Here is an example for disallowing the contact page Disallow: /p/contact-us.html . So, first you will need to replace /p/contact-us.html which is other part of the domain with another. It mean you just need to exclude the main domain and just type remain part of the page. According to my continue research on SEO for last 2 years and my own testing, I can say that it is just a technique to know the Search Engines’ bots algorithms and criteria properly. There aren’t anything hidden in this. Search engines like Google itself has stated many times the best practices of SEO on their help pages. One can visit Google’s own sites and within 10 minutes can clear his/her concept about SEO.

I’m myself researching and learning SEO since 2010, and I found a countless number of tips on the internet, however, my own implementation worked well and that’s my experience.

From my prospective, SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a technique/process that is used to convince the Search Engine’s Spiders to index and rank your online content. As Search engines crawlers are just software not human, but to know about them you can read their coding/formulas. Now here I want to let you know about the 30 basic aspects of SEO. So make sure you remember them and use them in the future for explaining SEO to someone.

1. What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it was initially used in 1990s for finding better webpages by Search Engines, but after Google’s invention, it opened the eyes of webmasters.

2. On-Page SEO

On-page SEO simply means, the work you do within your website for SEO is called On-page i.e website design, navigation, Pagelayout, interlinking, titles, meta tags, headings etc.

3. Off-Page SEO

Off-Page SEO simply means, the work you do outside your website for SEO is called off-page i.e submitting site to search engines, sitemaps, backlinks, social bookmarking etc.

4. Title Tags

The title tag is the most important SEO component which is used for giving a title to a webpage. It is simply an HTML tag.

5. Meta Tags

Meta tags are special/reserved HTML tags that are used to describe the content of a webpage. These tags are commonly used in SEO terms. Usually, meta tags are: Description, Keywords, Author, Robots, Generator. And they are used in the head section of a webpage.

6. Headings

Headings are also important components of SEO, a webpage may be having many paragraphs, so for each paragraph we can use different headings. Always sorting for Headings is as follow: H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6.

7. Keywords

The special/reserved words that describe the whole page is called keyword or keywords. They are mostly included in the title tag and used again and again in the entire page.

8. Keyword Density

The limit of a keywords in a complete article is called Keyword density. The maximum keyword density is 3% percent for the whole page. So if you write an article of 500 words the keyword may be included 15 times but not more than that.

9. Keyword Stuffing & Cloaking

This is a black hat SEO technique which is no longer accepted by Search Engines. This technique is used to cheat search engine crawlers; by using this technique some webmasters include a huge number of keywords in meta tags or in the page. Also they use different techniques to deceive visitors as well as search engines i.e hiding the original text from the user or positioning it somewhere, where it can’t be seen by human eyes.

10. Robots, Spiders & Crawlers

These are search engines software/system/algorithms which discover new webpages on the web and index them in their servers. These three names give the same meaning.

11. Internal Links

Interlinking is a technique which is used to create links within a website with particular pages.

12. External Links

This is a technique that is used to insert external links in a webpage, these links are indicating to other websites. If the links are not kept Nofollow then they are crawled by search engine robots.

13. Inbound links

Inbound links are those links that are outside your website on the web, but linking back to you. It is an indication for search engines that your site has been also somewhere else.

14. Outbound Links

Outbound links are those links that are going outside from your website. If they are not kept Nofollow they can be crawled by Search Engines crawlers.

15. Backlinks

Backlinks are those links which are outside your website but indicating back to your website. Those links with Dofollow attribution are called Backlinks. The other are just outbound links.

16. Nofollow

It is an attribute that tells the search engine crawler not to follow a particular page or link. So if a website dosn’t want to index a webpage or link, simply a nofollow attribute is added.

17. Dofollow

Dofollow is an attribute that tells the search engine crawler to follow the webpage or link entirely. By default all links are dofollow if they are not changed.

18. No Index

No Index is another attribute that instructs the crawler to not index the webpage. The link can be followed but the content won’t be indexed.

19. Sitemaps

Sitemaps are the best way to tell the search engines about your site’s complete A to Z content. It is essential for driving massive traffic from search engines.

20. Robot.TXT

This is simply a text file that is kept in the root directory of a website, it instructs the search engine crawler about the restricted webpages or directories which shouldn’t be accessed by them.

21. Google Panda

A Google search algorithm which is created for detecting low quality pages and websites with copied content.

22. Google Penguin

A google search algorithm that is designed to detect websites with spammy links, over-optimization, keyword stuffing and unnatural links.

23. C Class IP

This is something strange, but worth knowing, every website is given a unique IP address, so if you have a single hosting account and have multiple sites hosted on that, then the C Class maybe the same and the C class is the third number of the IP for example; 22.33.44.55, so the 44 is C class, if this is the same for multiple websites then if one website was penalized by Google, the other websites on the same IP may also be caught.

24. Domain Authority (DA)

This is a ranking based on the age of the domain, the backlinks to the domain and the overall ranking of the domain. So domain authority ranking may be vary for every website, above 30 DA ranking is considered good and above 50 is the best.

25. Page Authority (PA)

This is something very interesting, the page authority or PA ranking is different for each web page on the web, but mostly people try to know about their Home page PA.

26. Link Popularity

This is another term which is used for knowing the link popularity of any web page, people however, are only happy with home page link popularity, but you can check every page’s link popularity.

27. Page Rank (PR)

Page Rank is given by Google to every website/blog on the internet, and it is based on the total number of links/backlinks a website has. This is a numeric ranking starts from 0 and the highest value is 10. So your site can get any PR from 0 out of 10.

28. Alexa Traffic Rank (ATR)

This is not directly related to SEO, but considered to be in touch with SEO, so it is a traffic ranking system, Alexa gives traffic rank to each website on the web.

29. Author Rank (AR)

This is a new term introduced by Google recently, this will be involving in SEO because if the author (Web master) of the website is having good ranking then his website will be given more exposure by Google.

Google Panda and penguin are two major search algorithms from Google, these algorithms were released previous year to find low quality and spam websites on the web and to remove them from search index. The first algo Panda was released by Google in February 2012, which affected thousands of websites including big names such as shoutmeloud.com, and the last version of this update was 25, and Google says; they will not release any more Panda update in the future because this is now the regular part of Google search algorithms.

Having watched the video I hope you’ve got everything about Panda and Penguin and how to make yourself safe from these updates. But here I’d give you some points for which these two updates were released.

What does Panda Do?

Panda was particularly released for detecting/finding websites which were producing low quality content, copying other’s content and re-publishing, so it did that and banned thousands of websites. Now make sure you only work originally by yourself and produce quality content which actually help the people in real life, as I do.

What does Penguin do?

Penguin was another major Player by Google, which was released to detect/find sites that are over-optimizing their sites, doing keyword stuffing, using bad SEO techniques such as Black-hat SEO tactics, linking unnaturally and some more minor factors were included. So you can make sure to not do these things while optimizing your site.

SEO Nofollow & Dofollow Links in Urdu & Hindi

Here is a quick video tutorial in Urdu and Hindi languages for learning different sort of Links in SEO and especially the Nofollow links and Dofollow links. The tutorial will guide you practically about these links and you’ll come to know about how to use them properly in your website/blog. However, I’d guide you here about them a little bit.

What is a nofollow link?

A link becomes nofollow for search engines when the rel=nofollow HTML attribute is added to it, however, is something is not added then the link is by default dofollow. So when nofollow attribute is added, then the link is not followed by search engines’ robots. However, the anchor text inside the link is crawled and index by robots. Nofollow link doesn’t help in increasing Page Rank, though, Dofollow does.

What is a Dofollow link?

Each link is by default dofollow until the nofollow attribute is added, however, rel=dofollow attribute can also be added to links for making it sure that the link is a permanent dofollow link. Dofollow helps a lot in increasing page rank dramatically, but the condition is, if you have dofollow links for your site from higher ranking sites and relevant as well.

Other sort of Similar Attributes

NoIndex: this means to not index the content of the page
Index: means index each and everything
index,nofollow: means index the page but not follow the links inside the page
noindex,follow: means follow the links but do not index the page
noimage: this means do not index the images inside the page
Index,follow: this means that both the content and links should be followed and indexed

Also some kind of references which are used for different links:

Outbound links: These links are those links going to other sites from your site
Inbound links: these links are coming to your site
External Links: links which are going outside from your site
Internal Links: links which are to pages within your site
Backlinks: these are actually dofollow links which are given respect by search engines

So keep these points in mind while using the links in SEO, however, there are many other attributes as well. Which I can teach you in a later tutorial or post.

How to Avoid Keyword Stuffing in Urdu & Hindi

Keyword stuffing is a bad technique in SEO which is used by some webmasters to gain search ranking but it is no longer accepted by major search engines i.e Google. This technique comes in black-hat SEO tactics. I’ve created a video tutorial which will explain this thing very deeply and will also guide you about avoiding it and protecting yourself from being banned by search engines. Because Google penguin (Google search update) detects those websites who are doing this bad practice.

Keyword stuffing is actually a technique in which the blog owner use massive keywords in the title of the post, in the description and in the article itself. So You can not use more than one keyword in an article and also you can not repeat the keyword again and again in the title or in the description of the post. So let’s watch the video to learn it quickly.

How can you avoid Keyword Stuffing?

This is very simple, just use a keyword one time in your title of the post, again only one time in the search description, so it becomes balanced for search engines. You can’t force search engines to index your content, because they have to decide whether the page is balancing in all parameters or not. which includes different things such as the title of the post, the content of the page, the description of the page, the overall authority of the website and the signals from social media.

The keyword is that word or group of words for which you are going to optimize your blog/site post. So if a post is about top SEO tips for 2013, then you can only use SEO once in the title like this:

“SEO Tips for Beginners in 2013″

However, you can not use this technique, which some still do:

“SEO Tips 2013, SEO Tricks for beginners, Learn SEO”

The above one is the exact example of Keyword stuffing, so avoid it today and don’t be the hunt of Penguin.

Having watched the video tutorial I hope you’ve taken it seriously, but let me explain it to you in a little more details.

What is Keyword Density?

The keyword density is the percentage of words/keywords in your article, if you’ve written an article of 500 words then you can maximally use the keyword in the article 15 times, because 3% percent is the highest degree of keyword density, however, you should be trying to use 2%.

For example: if you have written an article about SEO Tips in 2013 then the SEO word is the main keyword along with the tips, so you can only use the word SEO 2% in your entire article, you can use word counter software or tools to count your total words and then find the keyword as well. This all is described in the video tutorial above, however here is a tool which can make the job easier for you, do use it:
