Sony unveils Android P and S

“It’s not about who makes them first, but who makes them better.” That’s how Sony’s Sir Howard Stringer announced his upcoming tablets.

To me it sounds like "better late than never" .

Having said that, Sony's new android tablets S and P looks neat and simple just like their names.

Running on Honeycomb both models have all the standard goodies, IPS display and Sony exclusives like Bravia engine and playstation connectivity. As they haven't disclosed the hardware, I guess it must be a standard dual core proccessor or wishfully a Sony quad cell processor.

While S is a standard tablet, P is a dual screen device with 2 1024x480 displays that can work independently or in tandem. while such devices have been seen earlier none have been successful yet.

Sony S could be a game changer if it can run two different apps on both it's screen. I would love to have my browser on one screen while my mail or chat running on the other screen. Or even have the video playing on top screen while I browse through my albums on the bottom screen.

Possibilities are endless with such a dual screen device. Hope Sony gets the best out of it.

Google does buy Motorola Holdings

So, as expected, Google is buying out Motorola Mobile Holdings (hefty price to pay). That removes almost all doubts on whether Android will continue to dominate the war front of Mobile device evolution.

With Patent battles tightening up, it was clear that Google is vulnerable to suits from Apple and Microsoft. But as Software industry giants like Oracle joined the party, Google pretty much had no other option than to buy out the next available option.

After Loosing out on the Nortel patent auction, Google had no much option left other than buy out Motorola Mobile Holdings, which could grant it much respite in the multiple patent infringement cases that Android OS now faces.

I am pretty much excited about this union for the possibilities it offers. Especially with regards to a new class and a new breed of devices that will get hooked up to the cloud all thanks to Android.

Android - A flash back & uncertainties in future

Here is a brilliant post from Unwiredview.com, a flashback into the evolution of the present day mobile communication devices from the so called smart phones of 2006/07.

Its a must read to know what market leaders were attempting while Steve Jobs played pied piper to the entire world with his magical iPhone.

More interesting is the way Google got lucky again with buying Android Inc. right over the same time as Apple iPhone was on the works. But Kudos to Google for bringing in the best of android at a time all every other manufacturer was dying for an alternative to iOS.

Now as android surpassed market shares across regions over this year, concerns over patent rights have started to show up with multiple patent suits being filed across manufacturers and even old generation software companies have joined the party.

Estimates now say royalty over IP rights may mean a additional cost of $60 over each android device which essentially means dead end.

As the Author at Unwiredview.com says, maybe the best way out for Google is to buy out Motorola's Mobile holdings company.

I wish Google did gobble SUN too prior to being brought out by Oracle.

At the other end, most who claim to be green, don't even insist for CNG vehicles while contracting the hundreds of cars used for employee commute.

Google is keen on clean energy, which is bound to become a future business advantage, and is making big investments to seed this nascent industry.

If Google's peers and top corporates commit with similar passion, we can certainly develop far more efficient and viable energy alternatives.

Apart from climate change, this can end oil dependency and maybe even dry up funds of Islamist terrorist groups!

While the Giants , Google and Microsoft, continue to attract talent, they are loosing em at a much rate even after taking unprecidented actions to contain this erosion. Social jobsite topprospect released the stats based on their user data and its clear that now all roads ends at Facebook.

Just 2 years back, being at googleplex was THE dream for every developer. Maybe Facebook is the new Google.

Samsung Galaxy S II - Neat!

S2 can be summed up as an incredible screen mounted on a wafer thin phone with a ridiculously flimsy plastic packing.

It's almost a engineering marvel. It's more of a large screen with built in phone rather than being a phone with large screen. Its so light it feels like holding a floppy disk (poor guy, extinct). A desire HD battery would probably weigh more than this device.

With a dual core processor n super AMOLED Plus screen, the only downside I see is : no Nvidia Tegra2 awesomeness and this phone cannot substitute a paper weight!

The best ever paper weight fone would be iPhone 4 followed by Droids n dHD :-)

Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Go Back in the Water... Sony Pictures Hacked

Just as PSN was brought back to life, Sony gets yet another blow, rather a deadly hacker punch.

Sony Pictures was targetted and the hacker group claims to have breached its security and gaining access to user account and other data.

With 75000 user accounts being compromised along with tons of music coupons, Sony is still working on a decent press statement .

The question is

- didn't Sony have a decent security system in place , especially after the PSN breach?

Or is it that

- Sony has a system at par with similar businesses like xboxlive or itunes and its just bad luck that the hackers chose Sony over others?

While Sony sees a new low, thanks to the hackers, IT Security vendors are certainly going to beat market expectations for q3 q4

Combined with Android app ecosystem, an android based netbook is more appealing than a Chrome book , well that's if at all some one needs a netbook now!

It's like the pool drained away just as you dived!

As Google is still going ahead with Chrome OS, there should be reasons, maybe reasons not comprehensible to the avg man.

Micronokia or Nokiasoft

Be it Micronokia or Nokiasoft, this just announced partnership between Nokia and Microsoft will Rock.

Through this, Nokia has openly admitted that its millions put on symbian , meego and maemo have all gone down the drain.

The change of leadership would hv certainly helped setting aside the ego issues of admitting failure and going for a third party OS .

But this move makes perfect business sense for Nokia and Microsoft.

Nokia desperately wanted an OS while Microsoft wanted a major manufacturer who would focus only on WinMo7 devices.

An excellent hardware getting a highly polished OS and App ecosystem. A N8 running on Windows phone 7 will be deadly even for iPhone. Wish Nokia does give N8 users some love!

All the while I have been wondering what went wrong in HP Palm marriage. May be some rejig is needed there too.

As CES unfolds, dozens of Android based tablets are being announced by every manufacturer all of which together will add up to around 80 models.

With so many iterations, it becomes a challenge for both the average user and Google & company themselves and opens up a new set of issues.

How are these tablets going to diffenciate among selves? Its certain that manufactures will try to combat this issue with a custom UI layer but that means delayed updates, bugs and bloatware to the consumer.

How can Google and developers keep a check on bugs and code optimization when there are 100 devices each having distinct hardware combinations and custom UI?

Most important, how will this overload of choices affect the buyer. How will I decide between 50 models within similar pricing and specs? This confusion means my buying decisions will heavily depend on product visibility and brand perception.

Or will I leave the dull grey devices behind and walk into that gorgeous iStore. It wouldn't be taxing for my brain to decide between 3g or wifi. No confusion. Moreover it feels good to be in a Apple store!

80 models of Tablets being launched to take on one iPad in a market that never existed an year back!. Its the biggest award or recognition that Apple has got, this Salute by an industry that had once written it off.

Honeycomb: Google works on design and aesthetics

Android have always been unappealing or mundane in looks. Many tried to improve things with custom UI like sense & touchwiz and was successful in some cases. However this issue was never a focus area for Google.

Thankfully, this is going to change with Android getting a major Makeover with 3.0 Honeycomb. Looking at the screenshots of Android 3.0 honeycomb, its evident that Google has realised the importance of aesthetics and that UI should be more than utilarian.

With a 3D environment being central to the Honeycomb UI design, it brings in a feeling of 'vast' '/ roomy' / 'spacious' on small screen sizes of 5" to 10.1"inches.

A noteable aspect of this UI is its focus on content / activity. By removing the Froyo-isque white notification bar (wherever possible) and subdued navigation icons, Google has minimized distractions while immensely improving the overall 'likability' which is critical to making a device engaging.

Google have also made efforts to keep the UI screens continuous and in harmony with each other. Unlike current versions, you wont feel like entering a new world while jumping from gmail to email app or from gtalk to gallery.

While many devices are far superior in specs compared to similar Apple devices, they mostly have mediocre sales because the UI doesn't entice the user. Some even have UI that is outright repelling.

The ways a UI layout affects the user remains subtle and at a subconscious level. while all of us have likes and dislikes, many of us don't realize why, and it remains critical to our cognition and ultimately purchase decisions.

Apple knows it while others are learning it the hard way.

Google has enabled the Samsungs and Motorolas to match Apple's advances in OS capabilities, Apps, cloud services and meaningful and free OS updates.

Let's see how much damage can Honeycomb do to Apple's lead on the UI design and Media fronts.

Since 2004, gmail has grown leaps and bounds and have been delivering incredibly user friendly features like a ritual.

with a perfect mobile application, I rarely find the need to log on to gmail from a PC and today, I am pleasantly suprised to get access to their new priority inbox feature.

Its been one feature that any gmail user badly needs especially considering the amount of alert and notification emails we receive each day.

gmail priority inbox looks to be perfectly implemented and seems to be a bit intelligent as it had already marked all my credit card and other financial statement emails as important.

another good move is the grouping of all starred emails together making things way too easy to find those important and pending actions.

Now one can do away with the earlier work around of using labels + multiple inbox to organise the inbox.

On 2 Froyo FR72

News about an update to Froyo has been floating around for a while. This tiny 1.8mb file named FR72 is meant to improve browser speed, flash performance and free up some memory.

While my nexus one didn't really turn out to become a F16 after this update, it did free up some space.

You can download it here from

To install,

Rename the file as update.zip and place it on the SD card root folder.

Power off your N1 and then powerup while holding down the volume down key.

This is get you to a system screen where you should select the recovery option. Use your volume keys to navigate and power button to select.

You will get a black screen with a triangle and a confused Droid. Press and hold power and volume up button simultaneously.

You will now see another screen with small blue font. Choose update from SD card option. Use scroll wheel to navigate and press on it to select.

N1 will now start the update process. Once complete, choose the reboot system option.

Your phone may take a few more seconds than normal to boot this time.Don't worry.

Best part is you can do all this from the phone itself. Apple listening?

I guess this update will work only on Nexus One that are already running Froyo build FR 50.

Though this build is available on Google servers the android guys maintain that this is not the final release candidate.

Given that we have been waiting for the official Froyo release since a month, what's wrong in trying this. We can always switch to the official release as and when it is pushed to our phones. (Highly unlikely in India)

Iphone 4 : Apple replies in style

APPLE has literally shown the middle finger to Google and rest of the flocks by packing in the much critized shortcomings iphone had along with a bunch of class goodies.

Most features like the multi tasking capabilities, threaded view on email etc. were long expected and not a surprise.

What takes iphone to a whole new level is its enhanced media capabilities. A brilliant screen with IPS and a pixel concentration of 324xinch combined with its superb contrast ratio makes iPhone a stunner.

Viewing content on such a screen will be Nirvana and is way above the screens that its competitors got to offer.

Couple that to the increased memory and 1ghz processor and battery life, developers now have a monster and can lavish on graphic intensive gaming and media applications.

For consumers, they now can happily be with the beautiful and polished iphone user experience while not sacrificing on multitasking and similar shortcomings.

I guess Google and its android team will be better off concentrating on the enterprise market and work its way above winmo and blackberry.

Better still, Google should develop a market around Internet and small business where they already lead thanks to the Google apps services.

With iphone 4, Apple has clearly reaffirmed that it will remain unrivalled when it comes to media and internet centric smart phones.

Sad part is how much ever polished and beautiful it is, its still a walled garden!

Froyo goodness rocks

Android 2.2 aka Froyo has been in news since April and Google started its rollout last week.

I was lucky enough to get the update on the same day it reached the major tech websites via manual update.

Though it sounds like a minor update, this one is big and I wonder how they managed to pack all of it in 44MB unlike Apple.

Google has made significant changes to the core and this update has supercharged N1.

Froyo lets applications run from SD card and also boosts the available memory to 256mb.

Tethering is brilliantly implemented with just one cluck to turn it into a wifi hotspot. Wish google added this to the power control widget.

Flash has been mixed experience. If not kept off or on demand, the browser slows down trying to load those unwanted flash ads. Otherwise its usable and those 360 degree views on product websites loads perfect.

Froyo adds exchange calendar sync and remote wipe feature in an attempt to appeal Enterprise users.

UI improvements include revised camera UI, collapsing call history, persistant launch keys for call and browser alongside the appdrawer icon, new contextual keys on keyboard and many more.

The market app has been revised to include automatic updates and update all features. But still far behind iphone

To make a serious dent on Apple fortunes, Android must have a better media player that can rival iPod. Maybe Google should get cooliris team to write that too and make picassa a full media suite which can sync n stream content from PC to Cloud to Android. Only that can nail IPhone.

Overall the update has been brilliant and makes a huge difference in overall user experience.

Might be its google at works to defend its position against the next wave of Apple onslaught due next month.

What makes me happy is 'if this is 2.2 then what will 3.0 be?

Nexus One with multitouch rocks

Google announced an over the air update for Nexus One which will enable multitouch in few of it's builtin apps including browser and maps. The maps app now shows favorities and maps added by the user through PC. Google has also added a patch to rectify the 3G reception issues faced by many users.

The OTA update is being pushed to Nexus One users by Google servers and is expected to cover all users over a week time. Guys at Android communities already figured out how to manually update the phone instead of waiting for Google's push notification.

The procedure is pretty simple.

Download the update file from google server (check below link for details) and rename as update.zip.

Copy it to the root folder of the SD card

Shutdown the phone and restart while pressing down the trackball

Select bootloader from the list displayed

Select update.zip from SD card option.

This will take you to a screen with a triangle and android
Press down the power button and then the volume key without leaving the power button

Leave your phone to complete the update which may take time
Don't do anything even if you feel that your phone is stuck with an android out of box screen. It will restart after a few minutes.

Once complete check the multitouch on your browser. If it's not working try to soft reset the phone a few times.(I didn't face that problem)

I managed to get the update done without the need for a PC. Just install astro from android market. Download the update, rename and move the file to SD card root folder using Astro!

Multitouch has been one big missing factor in Nexus One, especially for people who switched in from iPhone.

If Google develops picasa in line with iTunes to easily manage nexus one media, that will seal the deal. Atleast till the next iPhone comes

Nexus One - My switch seems permanent

After a week of using Google's Nexus One, I am not missing my iPhone and looks like my switch to Android is for ever. This didn't happen when I tried the Nokia E series and SE K series phones earlier nor did the previous androids impress me for more than an hour.

Hits and Misses

Minus the huge list of accessories, apps and the awesome iTunes media management system, Nexus One beats Apple iPhone in every other respect.

Best of Nexus:

Speed almost double of 3GS
Screen is Just awesome - brilliant images and video
Good Phone: call handling and signal strength (3G networks not used)
Excellent handling of notifications (calls, sms, email, gmail, FB, you name it)
Seamless integration to Google service (gmail, talk, picasa, calendar,etc)
Customization options
GPS and navigation app is far superior
Browser is faster and better in most cases, though grossly missing in multitouch
Camera better than iPhone in most lighting situations including video

Sour part

No multi touch
Poor media handling - No itunes like service
Poor third party app support - even FB app doesnt do much ( it took 2 yrs for FB to come up to mark in iPhone too)
Accessories and addons - Nil (poor adoption by third party accessories developers)

Future

Nexus One looks more like a benchmarking effort by Google to drive its partners to developing even better devices to strengthen Android platform. A showcase device which can attract developers as well as catch the attention of mainstream media and content delivery companies which are looking at Mobile as a new viable content delivery model.

Nexus One may be Google's "testing the waters" edition but it indeed is a step in the right direction. To a future of better and much more versatile Android based phones, from Google or its Partners, Apple does have a tough time ahead.

Apple tablet - itab/islate/whatever

Meanwhile, all eyes are now trained to Jan 27 Steve Job's event, when Apple showcases its new tablet baby. Will it change the world like iPhone? 99.9% sure, unless Mr. Job's screws it up big time. Afterall, we expect him to give us something to replace our Notebook, Net book, Smart phone, PMP, Kindle, PSP, Garmin and many more....
