Yahoo Mail Hacked, User Passwords Stolen

Yahoo said it regrets that Yahoo Mail has been hacked and wants to assure Yahoo Mail users that the company takes the security of consumer data very seriously. In the wake of the hack on Yahoo Mail, the firm is urging users to adopt better password practices by changing their passwords regularly and using variations of symbols and characters.

After major e-mail woes in December, Yahoo is now getting hit with another massive problem. Yahoo Mail has been hacked. Jay Rossiter, senior vice president of Platforms and Personalization Products at Yahoo, confirmed the hack on the firm’s Tumblr blog.

“Security attacks are unfortunately becoming a more regular occurrence. Recently, we identified a coordinated effort to gain unauthorized access to Yahoo Mail accounts,” he said. “Upon discovery, we took immediate action to protect our users, prompting them to reset passwords on impacted accounts.”

Based on Yahoo’s current findings, Rossiter said the list of usernames and passwords that were used to execute theattack was likely collected from a third-party database compromise.

What Is Yahoo Doing?

“We have no evidence that they were obtained directly from Yahoo’s systems. Our ongoing investigation shows that malicious computer software used the list of usernames and passwords to access Yahoo Mail accounts,” Rossiter said. “The information sought in the attack seems to be names and e-mail addresses from the affected accounts’ most recent sent e-mails.”

Rossiter then outlined what Yahoo is doing to protect Mail users. First, the company is resetting passwords on impacted accounts and using second sign-in verification to allow users to re-secure their accounts. Rossiter said impacted users will be prompted to change their passwords and may receive an e-mail notification or an SMS text if they have added a mobile number to their accounts.

Yahoo is also working with federal law enforcement to find and prosecute the perpetrators responsible for this attack. He said the company has implemented additional measures to block attacks against Yahoo’s systems.

Keeping E-mail Accounts Secure

“In addition to adopting better password practices by changing your password regularly and using different variations of symbols and characters, users should never use the same password on multiple sites or services,” Rossiter said. “Using the same password on multiple sites or services makes users particularly vulnerable to these types of attacks.”

Rossiter concluded by saying he regrets this has happened and wants to assure Yahoo Mail users that company takes the security of consumer data very seriously. In December, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer personally apologized for a Yahoo Mail outage: “This has been a very frustrating week for our users and we are very sorry.”

“We will continue to work on rolling out IMAP access and to fully restore inbox state (for example, which folders messages were placed in, which messages were starred, etc). This process differs for each user and as restoration continues, we’re committing to communicating directly with you on progress on an individual basis,” she said.

“Above all else, we’re going to be working hard on improvements to prevent issues like this in the future. While our overall uptime is well above 99.9%, even accounting for this incident, we really let you down this week,” she said at the time.

How to Repair a Broken Screen on a Tablet or Phone

Does the glass on your mobile device sport more cracks than a frozen lake in springtime? Never fear -- this is a repair you can handle yourself. It's actually quite easy, and cheap, to replace the glass once you get the hang of it. I've replaced a few touchscreens on my roughly handled devices and found that tablet and phone construction both rely on the same basic concepts.

Breaking the screen on your mobile device doesn't have to mean a brand new, expensive bit of kit. It's actually quite easy, and cheap, to replace the glass once you get the hang of it. A tablet touchscreen can cost about US$50 if you perform the work.

I've replaced a few touchscreens on my roughly handled devices and found that tablet and phone construction both rely on the same basic concepts.

This is how to approach it.

First, get familiar with the makeup of your device. The construction is loosely the same across devices and generally includes a back cover, motherboard-containing frame, LCD-containing chassis, LCD, front frame or bezel, and the touch-sensitive glass sandwich -- which is called a digitizer.

Tools that you'll need include miscellaneous small screwdrivers, a heat gun, scissors, double-sided adhesive tape, canned air, work gloves and two dinner-table bowls to keep screws from getting lost.

Replacement digitizers can be obtained from auction sites like eBay.

The Teardown

Step 1: Remove the device's back cover and pull the main battery.

Step 2: Loosen any stuck-on cabling that is now exposed, like the camera cable, for example. Then remove cables if the clasps are exposed. These cables simply slide out of any exposed sockets after clasps are released.

Tip: The tape-style cables are often held onto the frame and parts by adhesive, so tug gently to release.

Step 3: Unscrew the Phillips or Torx screws that hold the motherboard-containing back frame to the LCD-containing chassis and place the screws in a bowl for safe-keeping.

Tip: There can be lots of screws here -- my Toshiba tablet has 14.

Step 4: Separate the back frame from the chassis by gently and carefully pulling the two apart.

Tip: Perform a visual check for any hidden, unremoved screws if you detect resistance. Look for any hidden cables that connect the glass to the LCD-containing chassis and remove if necessary.

Step 5: Remove any further cable assemblies that have become exposed by the separation of parts.

Tip: Maintain visual cues as to which cable to reattach where. For example, place them on the work surface face-up in the order of removal.

Step 6: Remove the LCD-containing chassis from the front frame or bezel and glass assembly by unscrewing a second batch of screws.

Store the second set of screws in a second bowl. Remove any further parts such as the camera.

Tip: Don't touch the LCD face.

Step 7: Separate the existing, damaged glass from the bezel or front frame by waving the heat gun over the adhesive join and pulling apart. Wear gloves here because you will further break the glass.

Tip: Be patient while the heat gun loosens the adhesive and be careful not to break the bezel or front frame while removing the glass -- you will need the bezel intact.

Replacing the Screen

Step 1: Attach fresh two-sided tape to areas of the bezel that have lost their stickiness. Use the existing adhesive where possible. Don't allow tape to overlap the visual part of the glass.

Step 2: Look for any foam padding or seals and reattach.

Step 3: Thread the digitizer cable and remount the new digitizer glass to the bezel by firmly pressing it into place. Then remove any dust from the LCD and glass with canned air.

Tip: Do not touch the inside of the glass -- you won't be able to get rid of the fingerprints after assembly.

Finally, Reassemble

Reattach any parts, like the camera. Then reassemble chassis, frame and so on, in order.

You may have to assemble and disassemble a couple of times because the two sets of screws use similar holes. It's easy to insert the initial set of screws into the wrong holes. You'll only know you've done that when the second set won't fit because you've already used the hole.

Tip: Look for solid connections when attaching cables. Ensure that the clasps are open first. Usually the up position is open.

In general, firm snaps indicate a good assembly. Always reapply any existing metallic tape. Count the screws. If you have any left over, backtrack.

PayPal Lights Beacon for Hands-Free Payments

PayPal on Monday announced new technology that aims to make paying for goods as simple as walking into a store. Specifically, PayPal Beacon is a contactless payment system that uses Bluetooth Low Energy to connect with customer handsets to send offers and complete transactions.

The mobile wallet-like payment system lets consumers pay for purchases hands-free, often without standing in line or waiting. Retailers start by plugging a PayPal Beacon device into a power outlet in their store. The device communicates with registers through PayPal's point-of-sale system and a PayPal mobile in-store API that can be customized to each individual retailer.

PayPal Beacon then communicates with participating consumers' handsets via Bluetooth. Simply walking into the store can trigger a vibration or sound to confirm a successful check-in; the consumer's photo will then appear on the screen of the point-of-sale system, allowing staff to greet them by name. At the end of the visit, paying requires only a verbal confirmation.

Stores can customize programs to greet customers with special offers or coupons, and consumers can use the technology to preorder lunch, for instance, and pick it up without waiting in line by paying with PayPal mobile.

"No one wakes up in the morning and thinks, 'I wish someone invented something better than swiping a card to pay. I hate it,'" explained David Marcus, president of PayPal. "We figured the only better way to pay would be to do nothing. Just walk in a store and, like magic, when you're ready to pay, money is transferred securely."

A mobile in-store API will be made available to developers, Marcus added. Pilot tests of Beacon-enabled technologies are expected to begin in the fourth quarter, with a full rollout early next year.

'A Totally Alternative Paradigm'

Many attempts have been made over the years to enable mobile wallet functionality. Solutions along the way have come from providers including credit card companies, Square, Google and even PayPal, many of them relying on near-field communications. Many of those attempts have fallen short of adoption, however.

"Swiping is not a broken process," Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence, told the E-Commerce Times. "You have to create a totally alternative paradigm. Not having to stand in line -- they have added a great deal of efficiency and convenience to that process."

Indeed, "overall, Beacon appears to address many of the issues and challenges that have held

back digital wallet adoption," Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT, told the E-Commerce Times.

That said, however, "credit cards have succeeded for generations by taking complexity out of the purchasing process," King added. "As good as it may be, I don't expect Beacon to displace or replace credit cards any time soon."

In fact, credit cards are not likely to be sidestepped with PayPal Beacon, since most purchases made through the contactless payment system will likely be billed to a credit card rather than drawing from a bank account.

Local Without Location

Consumers may be able to complete transactions without lifting a finger using the new technology, but they will have to opt into the service when they enter a store or restaurant in order to activate Beacon for payment.

"PayPal Beacon doesn't track your location unlike other technologies," Hill Ferguson, PayPal's vice president of global product, told the E-Commerce Times. "If you enter a store and decline to check in, or just ignore the prompt entirely, no information is transmitted to PayPal."

There is an option to set a location to "always allow" auto check-in for a frequently visited merchant, Ferguson added.

Protections are also in place to block suspected purchases.

"If your phone is stolen and used for purchases, our automated fraud and risk management algorithms will kick in if the purchases are out of the ordinary," he explained. "Of course PayPal will protect you in the unlikely event you are left out of pocket."

'Something Interesting'

PayPal Beacon requires infrastructure both at the retailer level and on the consumer side, but getting retailer adoption will probably be the bigger challenge.

"I think the biggest challenge is to get these Beacons in stores," said Sterling. "The consumer side is easier."

On the other hand, "its primary benefit appears to be simplicity -- it requires nothing more than an electrical outlet and can interact with numerous point-of-sale terminals -- which is always a plus for small businesses," King noted.

The technology's photo-based verification process, however, could also help reduce fraud, King added.

"Square proved, at the very low end at least, that there is a more effective way to accept credit cards," Sterling concluded. "That then spawned other imitators, and really motivated PayPal to make something interesting."

Apple Trademarks iWatch Name In Japan — Keep Calm And Carry On

Let the speculation merry-go-round continue. According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple has trademarked the name iWatch — again. This time Japan is the territory, while the trademark covering “products including a handheld computer or watch device” was actually filed with the Japan Patent Office on the 3rd of June but was only made public last week. It follows an unconfirmed report by a Russian newspaper that Cupertino had filed the iWatch trademark in Russia last month.

So, Apple is definitely making this thing, right? Well, maybe, though for now I’m inclined to file this away in rumorware. Trademarks for speculative products are registered by large consumer electronics companies all the time — products that are in a very long pipeline or exist in a PowerPoint presentation only. Besides, if or when Apple does release a smartwatch, timing will be everything.

Despite the tech media’s current Apple narrative that frames the company as desperately needing a new breakthrough product category, unless Tim Cook’s Apple is deviating drastically from the Jobs playbook, the company is/has been likely taking a wait and see approach to an iWatch. Cupertino may well be known as the great innovator, which in hindsight it invariably proves to be, but Apple’s definition of innovation is rarely to be first.

The iPod wasn’t the first MP3 player, though it was the first to utilise that crucial 1.8inch hard drive (“a thousand songs in your pocket”). The iPhone wasn’t the first touchscreen smartphone either, though it utilised capacitive technology and a UI that ensured it was finger-friendly and crucially bundled a data connection at the point of sale. Likewise, the iPad wasn’t the first tablet computer by any measure, but we all know how that worked out. This is a company that has built its second coming on the ability to say “no”.

Or at least, “not yet”.

Cue recent comments from Apple’s CEO. Speaking at the D11 conference, Cook said on the topic of Apple potentially doing a smartwatch or other wearable tech: ”There’s nothing that’s going to convince a kid who has never worn glasses or a band or a watch to wear one, or at least I haven’t seen it.”

Of course, “I haven’t seen it” could mean that it doesn’t exist on the market yet from Apple’s numerous competitors (sorry Pebble, Sony and countless others). Or that Cook hasn’t seen it brewing in Apple’s R&D labs either. One thing I’m sure of is that Cupertino won’t sanction an iWatch until the technology’s shortcomings – not least battery life and the UI of a smartwatch — can be addressed. And that could still be quite some time.

For now Apple fanboys, keep calm and carry on.

After withering in the dry heat for the last four months, Google Reader will quietly disappear into the horizon later today. It’s a sad day, but the sun will rise tomorrow, and the Internet will keep on spinning. Thankfully there are a lot of fine Google Reader alternatives to keep feeding your RSS addiction.

For the past month, a daily popup has reminded Google Reader users to back up their data. Google is essentially zero’n the drive tomorrow, ridding itself of millions of OMPL files. Stop procrastinating and take 5 minutes to export your data.

There are several options.

Google Takeout is by far the easiest way to export your Google Reader data. The Google service is designed to export not only Google Reader data, but also data from Buzz, Hangouts, Contacts, Drive, Goggles, and YouTube. If you just choose Reader, the export file should be less than a megabyte and only take a minute or so to process and download. Once downloaded, this OMPL file can be used in most RSS readers.

If you choose all of the services, the process will take a lot longer, but Google Takeout will email you when the exported data is ready to be downloaded.

However, Google Takeout doesn’t export all of your Reader information. As Mihai Parparita explainsthrough his persistent.info site, it leaves behind tagged items, comments, and read items. He created this tool to export everything through Reader’s API.

All the shared items from the people you were following.
All the comments on shared items

GTA V box cover incoming, new art arrives

Rockstar love teasing us by trickling Grand Theft Auto 5 information out on their official blog, which this weekend included an update in their digital download section. Fans can now find all the GTA V art released to date, and this includes the artwork we’ve featured above called The Trunk. Some of the pictures have already been seen at game stores across the US and UK, although only now can you download everything from the download section on Rockstar Games. You’ll find screensavers, icons, avatars, wallpapers, and a lot more.

Not to be confused with the recent Game Informer magazine cover, it seems that Rockstar will be revealing the official GTA V box cover later this month. In the recent blog post, Rockstar told fans to “stay tuned for lots more ahead“. They also mentioned that not only will more artwork be revealed this month, but also gamers can look forward to GTA V’s official box art in January.
