Welcome to the first post in the series “Write Killer Content” For Your Blog. I’m so happy to introduce this series (course).

I strongly believe that this topic is very vital for any blogger to become successful in their blogging career.

It is because content is the backbone of any blog. If you take content off any blog, there is no blog! Not just that.

Your blog’s content is your portfolio. Be it business, branding, conversion or marketing – your blog’s content serves all these purposes. It is not your blog’s design or your social proof.

It IS your blog’s content. Period.

You can never take any chances to publish crappy content on your blog and expect to attain success in whatever you’re aiming for. It will simply never happen.

Let’s put ourselves in the shoes of an average person who surfs the internet needing something. And, let’s assume that he wants to know about “email marketing”.

It is so easy for you, as a blogger, to put up a 300-500 word average article on “email marketing” by rewriting some of the information available on the internet. You could also write 3 or 4 additional blog posts on the same topic, again by rehashing what’s already available on the internet.

Let’s say your blog was lucky enough to be ranked by Google for the keyword “email marketing” (although chances that this could happen are very slim, very!).

Think about the reader experience.

If it is you, would you be happy and satisfied by reading that 300-500 word re-hashed article? You bet.

It is the same with your reader, or even more critical.

A cheap or a crappy blog post will result in one or many of the following:

You see content is really the King.

Personally, apart from the above mentioned reasons, I also consider ‘creating epic content’ to be one of the crucial aspects of blogging.

After all we’re blogging, right. We gotta have a purpose. We gotta make a difference. We gotta say something that really matters. Otherwise we better don’t blog!

That’s my personal opinion, of course. But I do hope that it makes sense.

So that’s my motive behind starting this series and I really do hope that you will find this series useful. In my honest opinion, you’ll be able to become a problogger only if your content is of extreme quality.

Let’s say you have a stunning blog in terms of design. Such a blog will make the visitors stay for a few more seconds. But if the content is crappy, they’ll soon realize that its time to leave. The stunning design can hold readers’ attention only for so long.

In the same way, let’s assume that you’re a marketing king and that you market your blog’s (poor quality) content like crazy. Sure, your blog promotion strategy will bring in a lot of traffic. No doubt. But the landed traffic will learn very soon that your blog simply has crappy content and the traffic is useless. There’s no doubt.

I’m not saying that you should only produce killer content and not worry about promoting it or presenting in a nice way, or should not worry about the design of your blog. You should of course write killer blog content and then take care of the following as well:

1. Promote the content in social media,

2. Network with other bloggers,

3. Present the content in an easily consumable manner (neatly formatted posts, including media etc.),

4. Give your blog a professional look by taking care of the design of the blog,

5. Optimize your blog posts for search engines, and

6. Optimize your blog for search engines (this can be done by using a search engine optimized theme like Thesis or Genesis),

And all that. BUT all these don’t make sense when you don’t have killer content on your blog.

In fact I don’t recommend newbie bloggers to submit their blogs to search engines or do guest blogging until they have at least 5-10 high quality killer posts on their blog.

Both the search engines as well as the traffic (from search engines and guest blogging) won’t appreciate that. It will only leave a negative mark on your blog.

Not just design and promotion, but nothing can help you succeed if you have crappy content on your blog.

If you have killer content in your blog as the base you surely can go ahead and promote it like crazy. Wait, over a short period of time, people will start promoting it like crazy for you. It gets that sweet!

The popularity of blogging has erupted in recent years, making the activity something that is attractive to many with a penchant for writing.

A blog is, by definition, a website on which an individual posts a personal journal of sorts, providing reflections on life and details concerning a topic about which he or she knows a great deal.

If you feel you have something to share and you want others to hear your profound musings, blogging may be for you. If you’ve decided to pick up this hobby, keep these tips in mind to enable yourself become a master blogger.

Before you can sit down and put fingers to keys, you must know what you’re going to blog about.

While your blog doesn’t have to be limited to one topic, it’s best to have a specific focus, at least to a point, to ensure that each post speaks to the same audience.

Select a topic you feel passionate about as well as one about which you are knowledgeable. If you recently picked up an online degree in marketing, for example, focus on this topic and include useful information you’ve learned in the course of your education.

Whether you’re a renowned public speaker, a world traveler or a five-star chef, writing about your particular area of expertise will bring an element of authenticity to your blog.

By selecting a topic that reflects your life experiences, you can ensure that what you have to say is valuable.

While seeking your blogging voice, explore the works of others, searching for blogs on topics similar to the one about which you plan to write.

Explore these blogs and use them to help you determine what you do — and do not — want to include in your own blog.

The way your page looks can make or break your blog. Spend time perusing the design options on the theme you’ve selected and pick the one that best reflects your personal style and also serves the business purpose.

Also consider whether the format you select fits with the theme of the blog. A flowery background may not be as appropriate for a blog about urban construction as a grey concrete-patterned one would be, for example.

People don’t read blogs looking for a robotic rendition of something they already know. They read blogs because they like the blogger’s voice and writing style.

Don’t stifle your character when blogging, sticking only to the hard facts without ever veering off course.

Instead, write the way you speak, allowing your personal sense of humor and your individual worldview to waft through the blogosphere.

Give your avid readers something to look at other than lines of text on a screen. Add pictures of the subjects about which you write to make your blog more naturally engaging and visually appealing.

With the addition of these images, you can allow your readers to have a deeper sensory experience while exploring your blog, likely increasing the degree to which they enjoy their time spent on your site.

If you don’t tell people about your blog, no one will read it. After putting up a few blog posts, share them with others. Use social media networks and comment boards as ways to spread the word about your blog.

As visitors find their way to your page, they’ll read your content and, if they like it, they’ll come back. Though you may capture some random readers through search results, you can’t count on search engines to launch your blog.

It’s up to you to get the word out on your own.

Your goal should be to capture and retain readers. If your blog is only updated every once in a while, you likely won’t succeed in retaining your readership.

When it comes to updating your blog, the more frequently you do so the better.

To reduce the likelihood that you let weeks slip by without a blog update, set a schedule for updating your blog, committing yourself to doing so every Tuesday and Thursday, for instance.

Blogging can be a fun way to share your thoughts and feelings concerning something you know a great deal about. As you take your first steps into the blogging world, keep these simple tips in mind.

By following them, you can likely improve your chances of blogging success.

As a blogger or internet marketer, you can already appreciate the value in being able to start a business or web site of your own no matter where you are.

What’s the last retail business you can think of that’s been able to get this type of exposure lately?

I know… I know… it may seem a little far fetched to compare blogging to offline businesses, but it really shouldn’t be!

The days of starting a local business and having to deal with staff, rental costs, taking out loans and trying to turn a profit, is a broken model. Take all of that same effort and investment and look at what can be accomplished in the world of blogging.

TechCrunch, ICanHazCheeseburger, PerezHilton… all mega million dollar wordpress blogs… yes, it is possible.

Personally i believe that both can be beneficial though. If you do own the bricks and mortar then you have a good long term investment even if the business inside changes. The online aspect can also boost business provided they are compatible.

Simple makes a difference, right?

For many bloggers, SEO is a dirty word. Or a slightly smudged acronym at least. “I just want to blog and I’m good at it too,” comes the cry; which is all well and good –  but you want people to actually read your meticulously crafted, absorbingly informative and oh-so-witty posts.

Cultivating networks and the online equivalent of word-of-mouth can count for a lot. If you’re really good, they’ll help you build a dedicated following.

But unless you go viral or that cult following becomes a fully-fledged religion, you’ll want to benefit from the extra traffic that search engines can throw your way. This is where SEO comes in.

“So what is this SEO stuff anyway?” you cry once more.

Well, even if you have little or no knowledge of the techniques involved, you’re probably aware that SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

Put simply, it’s the process of increasing your blog’s visibility in a search engine’s search results. There are a number of ways to do this and many only require a little extra effort and forward planning.

Okay, so in blogging content is actually king, but keywords are massively important when it comes to SEO.  And, as a seasoned blogger, your command of the written word should be such that you can incorporate keywords without that content suffering too much.

Keywords are the words (or just as often phrases) that users actually type into the search engine box when looking for a site. If your blog has a particular theme or caters to a particular industry or field there may be certain keywords that are relevant for the majority of your blogs.

Unless you’re simply repeating yourself, however, you’ll also need to research specific keywords every time you update or post a new blog.  And the, ahem, key word in that last sentence is ‘research’.

By all means brainstorm your keywords but don’t rely on gut instinct for what will work and what won’t.  Run potential keywords through Google’s AdWords keywords tool to get an idea of how well each works and how much competition they have.

While you’re there you can pick up some alternative suggestions as well.

Once you have your keywords, sprinkle them liberally throughout your content but don’t overdo it. Overusing keywords or ‘stuffing’ can actually be detrimental to your rankings and you should probably aim for a keyword density of 2-3 per cent (and certainly Google doesn’t love it recently).

Opinion varies on the optimum density and Google keep the inner workings of their algorithms a closely guarded secret.

But you certainly shouldn’t go as high as 5 per cent.  After all, it really would be difficult to make your contact flow if one word in every twenty had to be a keyword.

To make sure you do it right and at the same time you don’t overdo it, I recommend using the Easy WP SEO plugin (read Jane’s review of the plugin) which gives you full control over optimization.

Titles and headings don’t just catch the eye of your reader and make it clear what you’re blogging about. They can also capture the attention of search engine crawlers.

Extra importance is placed on words within designated headings, so make sure they contain your most effective and relevant keywords.

Categories can be a good way to organize your content. Grouping your archive posts by topic rather than simply by date can help make your site more navigable for visitors and can also help SEO.

Search engines tend to favour well structured sites. They will often assume that the most important pages of any site will be within three clicks of the homepage and using categories will help you to organise your content so this is the case.

Getting inbound links from relevant, trusted and popular sites is hugely important, but internal links can also help boost your search engine rankings.

A web crawler needs to be able to access all your pages easily and creating links within your content can help them do this. Ensure that all links are actually relevant however.

Google and other search engines take into account the ‘freshness’ of any page they find so you should post new content as regularly as possible.

The added bonus, of course, is that new content and constant activity keeps your blog interesting and up-to-date for existing and new followers alike.

This week I’m going to do some random link sprinkling …. meaning they are not organized by categories or anything.

As it is literally, random hunting means you try to embrace as many readers as you can, no matter what their backgrounds are. While targeted hunting means you do a selective hunt for your future readers who will actually serve the purpose you’re looking for.

Whatever you choose, what you should do is check the comments of those A-list blogs.

Actually I wouldn’t recommend focusing on the A-list blogs solely; if I were you I would prefer choosing a blog that has significant interaction with the audiences.

A blog that has good interaction shows that its readers are interested in delivering opinions and that means they are active readers. Having these readers you can have a valuable feedback toward your blog.

Once you decide your targets, lock them up and grab them in your personal database. Learn those blogs thoroughly and pay more attention on their interests.
