Rev. Mark G. Johnston - It’s evident from Paul’s writings to the church at Corinth that the people there had some very wrong-headed expectations of what the Christian Life should be. Paul had suffered greatly in his travels, but made every effort in every church to show them that the God he served is truly The God of All Comfort.

Galatians 4:8-20

Rev. Mark G. Johnston - The apostle Paul refers to the Galatians as "My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you." We who claim to be Christians should reflect the attributes of Christ, into whose likeness we are being transformed. We are no longer bound by the Law, but sons and heirs of His Kingdom.

We who are believers in this age are privileged to know Jesus, and we can look back on how God’s Grace was present from the very beginning.

Rev. Mark G. Johnston - So the Law was put in charge to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith, Paul writes in Galatians chapter 3. This is the purpose and conclusion of the Law, achieved once for all by Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension into Heaven. There is no other Gospel, and the Galatians were being led astray.

Not just things, material objects, but things pursued because someone else has them—and we want them. Where does it end?

Rev. Mark G. Johnston - In his letter to the church in Galatia, Paul explains clearly how the basic gospel message is sufficient to enable the sinner to be saved. But then what? We learn that there are a great many facets to the jewel of sanctification. Faith or obedience? Grace or law? The key to these questions comes under the word “covenant.”

We are made in His image, and our words should reflect the image of Him. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. What if everyone kept that commandment?

Rev. Mark G. Johnston - Reasoned discourse, seems to have vanished from our lives, replaced by endless emails, Twitter feeds, Facebook entries, text messages, sound bites, bumper stickers and more. But Paul makes every effort to prove that the curse of the Law and the consequences of trying to keep it calls for some serious, reasoned consideration.

Rev. Mark G. Johnston - Knowing what it means to be “Justified” in the sight of God is an issue of monumental importance. It’s essential to understand where and how it began, with God’s covenant promise to Abraham. Prefiguring Christ, the Scripture says “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.”

Garner - When we understand that all of the Bible points ultimately to Jesus Christ, we must also recognize that God’s intended covenant of marriage started right there in the Garden with Adam and Eve, and continues on up to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Claiming that marriage is unimportant in God’s sight, or “none of His business,” is inexcusably foolish.

Rev. Mark G. Johnston - When we read in Paul’s letter to the Galatians “Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?” it might remind us of the anguish Jesus felt when He cried “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem…How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood?" It was the cry of a grieving Father, bemoaning his children’s heartless behavior.

Johnston - The question of when and how is it right to prematurely terminate a human life, famously presupposes that the decision to end someone’s life can ever be “right.” Are there some unborn babies who don’t even have a right to be born? It all comes down to the old question “Who do You Trust?”

Galatians 2:17-21

Rev. Mark G. Johnston - The debate has been going on since the church began: Are we saved by grace alone, through faith alone, or must we include our works in the equation? And if so, do we earn salvation by our good works, or do good works because of our salvation? One of these interpretations is what Paul calls “another gospel.”

Rev. Dr. David B. Garner - The infinite, eternal God of all Creation has given us His commandments, and we can trust Him to be the final authority on all human behavior. He is also the God of Family Values, having made us family-centric in our hearts and spirits. The commandment to Honor your Father and Mother comes with the promise of long-term blessings, and in this, too, we can trust Him completely.

Johnston - Paul's epistle to the church at Galatia in Antioch reveals his alarm that the people who had heard and responded to his exposition of the Gospel were being infected with a theological cancer...a cancer that has continued even to our time. We must understand just what is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and even more, what it's not.
