Last year Proton Holdings Berhad has launched a new variant of Malaysia’s first MPV Exora which features an all-new 1.6-litre Campro Charge Fuel Efficiency (CFE) engine with performance comparable to that of a 2-litre engine. The CFE engine is available in the new Exora Bold Premium and the top-of-the-line Exora Prime model that comes equipped with a 6-speed automatic CVT transmission.

Both of Exora Bold Premium and Prime now has more peak power at 138hp with 205Nm maximum torque. But the most impressive things is that the turbo powered MPV has a good looking too, as you can see from the picture above. THE Proton Exora is a vehicle designed to meet a very specific purpose.

In providing a new seven-seat vehicle for a price you'd normally expect to see when shopping used, it can't fail to sell.

It might not be the most exciting car for sale but if practicality and trimming the budget come first, it's a vehicle with a lot to be said for it.

Given that Proton looks set to change the engine, transmission and suspension settings from the car that's been on sale for some time in Malaysia, you're not going to get definitive driving impressions just yet.

Plans are afoot to introduce a turbocharged version of the domestic market 1.6-litre four- cylinder petrol engine which will be mated to a CVT gearbox.

If this shifts enough units to make the expense worthwhile, a diesel version will appear some time thereafter.

The Exora is tuned to provide ride comfort rather than exciting handling, although it's likely that Proton will turn to Lotus in order to ensure that it handles a little more crisply for more demanding British customers.

The Exora isn't going to set too many hearts aflutter with its functional styling but the inevitable consequence of that slab-sided look is plenty of space inside.

The basic proportions are a little unusual, with plenty of height but not the most generous serving of width.

This makes the Exora easy to slot into parking spaces and manoeuvre through tight city streets but if you're planning on carrying three abreast in the second row, it's probably best if they're not too broad of shoulder.

Luggage space in the rear is capable of dealing with a light shopping trip, but anything much bigger and you'll need to start folding the seats.

This isn't too difficult, and the second row's 70/30 split allows you to load long items through and still retain enough space for a couple of passengers.

Build quality is about as you'd expect.

The quality of the interior plastics isn't brilliant and there's an awful lot of grey about, but some not inconsiderable thought has clearly gone into the control ergonomics.

While this represents a mere first glimpse of what British customers will be getting, the Proton Exora has a ready made market niche awaiting it. With many MPVs getting more and more technologically complex, there exists a gap that can be filled by a car that's simple, inexpensive and as tough as old boots. The Exora might well be that car.

Clearly much will depend on how ambitious Proton gets with UK pricing, but the omens look good.

Both Honda and Fiat have tried the short and wide MPV route in this country with the FR-V and Multipla respectively, but Proton is taking a different tack with its rather narrower Exora and it's one that might well find favour. It's too early to offer a proper report card just yet, but the Exora is one to keep an eye on.

MPVs (Multi-Purpose Vehicles) have generally been well-received by Indonesian consumers. Proton's designated flagship in that class, the Exora, is perhaps no exception. For instance is the Proton Exora Star, which was first introduced in 2009. The 7-passenger MPV comes out as a tough yet affordable family car.

Three years after, PT. Proton Edar Indonesia (PEI) as the brand holder of Proton in Indonesia announced the launch of the Proton New Exora Star. The introduction of this latest edition of the Exora Star was held at PEI's headquarters on Thursday (26/1). So, what are new that the New Exora Star has to offer to Indonesian consumers?

Well, for starters, if its predecessor only comes as a manual, the Proton New Exora Star set to hit the roads tomorrow will have an automatic variant, as well as two other variants. The latest report received by CarMall.com cites that PEI have also partnered-up with a local party to develop the body kit and the audio system.

Although no prices have been revealed, the automatic Proton New Exora Star is estimated to have a Rp.10 million price difference with the manual Exora Star, which is sold at around Rp.154 million.

The current New Exora is already equipped with front seats that features height-adjustable foot rests, power steering, power window and a double-DIN audio unit (CD, Radio, USB), which was brought in CBU (Completely Built-Up) from Malaysia. One of the Exora Star's strong points include the handling, which is the result of a collaboration between Proton and Lotus, and the 1,600cc CamPro engine that is claimed to be fuel-efficient.

2010 Proton Exora Basic review from Malaysia

"MPV for the masses"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Back wiper not syncing.

Front right absorber noisy.

Uncontrollable air conditioning.

Smell-leak from petrol & fumes.

General comments?

As a whole, this is an MPV perfect for a 6-7 person family to travel in comfort. Space, length, wideness.

My model is a basic with only one airbag. No ABS, EBD, DVDs, 2nd row air conditioning, sport-rims. But the Body Control Module (BCM) is STILL superb.

In many POV, this is still better than the Livina and Citra, especially engine wise. It is not UNDERPOWERED as many have claimed, as going up hill at 90kmh is still achievable with the correct driving skills.

It is economically drivable as long as you don't expect to get a low efficient engine driving 140kmh 70% on the wheel. 100-120kmh drive for 2 hours gave me 12km/L count. 1.6 with 120hp, that should be considerably efficient.

Accessories wise, too bad Proton vendors are still quality-starved! Many smaller items will wear out faster than you can count to 10.

Proton Exora To Hit Thai Market Next Week

BANGKOK, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- With over 7,000 of its cars already on the road, Proton is set to launch its maiden multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) Exora in the Thai market at the Thailand International Motor Expo next week.

Based on initial feedback from the media and industry experts, Phranakorn Auto Sales general manager (operations) Apichart Wangsatorntanakhun said they were expecting a good response from Thai buyers.

"We took more than a dozen journalists to test the Exora in Malaysia. Exora received excellent reviews from the media, as well as those who came for discussion with us and saw the car at our showroom," he said in an interview here.

The Nation daily, in its review Friday said that Exora, with good handling and ride balance for its class, combined with versatile interior, was a good value as a family-mover against the smaller Toyota Avanza and the pricey Honda Freed.

Proton made its entry into the Japanese manufacturers-dominated Thai market at the end of 2007 to take advantage of the low five per cent import duty imposed under the Asean Free Trade Area agreement. Phranakorn was appointed as its official distributor.

According to Apichart, Exora's competitive pricing matched with quality, interior design and various accessories like leather seats and DVD player would enable it to compete with other MPVs in the market.

"It's value for money...it's similar to what Japanese manufacturers have been doing and is their secret for success. But now, their cars are a bit over priced," he said, adding that Honda Freed launched here two weeks ago was priced at between 894,000 Baht and 1,074,500 Baht (RM1 = 10 Baht).

Apichart said the 1.6-litre engine with five-speed manual or four-speed automatic Exora in five colours would hit the market in the price range between 699,000 Baht to 799,000 Baht.

Launched on April 15 in Malaysia, the Exora model has received 26,000 bookings todate, and 17,000 units were already registered in the domestic market there, as well as making its debut in Indonesia and Singapore.

Apichart said since its entry into the highly-competive market, Proton had sold more than 7,000 cars, with the top model being Savvy.

Asked on Phranakorn's sales target for Exora, Apichart said they had set a high target but declined to reveal.

"Overall, we hope to get about 900 bookings for all our models during the motor show.

"In fact, we are giving free insurance and free leather seats for Savvy buyers," he said.

Last year, Proton, which has 35 dealers nationwide, received 863 bookings during the popular expo attended by more than 1.5 million people. There were 14,000 orders.

Other Proton models available here are Neo, Gen 2, Persona and Persona CNG.

He said the overall sales was good, considering the weak Thai automotive market where sales dropped by 20 per cent for passenger cars and 28 per cent for pick-ups.

Exora, Malaysia’s first Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), which far exceeded initial sales targets with bookings of more than 35,000 units since its launch, has been nominated for the prestigious Adverting and Marketing Effectiveness (AME) award organised by the New York Festivals.

The Exora marketing campaign also won a Gold Dragon at the Promotions Marketing Awards of Asia (PMA) ’09 and a Silver award at the Malaysian Effectiveness Awards.

“Unlike other advertising awards, the AME Awards credits creative work that’s strategic, effective, and produces tangible results,” said Huang Ean Hwa, Deputy Chairman of McCann Worldgroup. Winners of the AME Awards will be announced on 21 April. Three Malaysian companies were nominated in the Integrated (Mixed Media) Marketing category: Canon (“Canon Goes Green” / Dentsu Malaysia), Pantene (“3 Minute Miracle” / Grey Group Asia Pacific), and Polident (“East, Speak and Smile with Confidence” / Grey Group Kuala Lumpur). Technological advances have been incorporated in proton proton mpv exora

Proton MD Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin has revealed in an interview with Business Times that the Italian design company contracted to develop Proton’s next C-segment sedan is in fact Italdesign-Giugiaro SpA.

Giugiaro (founded 1968) has designed a lot of vehicles in the past, including the Mk1 Volkswagen Scirocco (not the modern one that’s just launched in Malaysia). It even had a big part in the development of the R56 MINI. Here are some of Giugiaro’s recent work:

The Business Times report revealed that a clay model of the car already exists at the design house’s headquarters in Turin, Italy. It definitely has to be, considering the new Persona replacement car was previously mentioned to be out by 2012, after the Waja replacement in 2010 and the Perdana replacement in 2011.

The car will be engineered to meet tougher European and North American standards. Proton’s North American entry is still a hazy area at the moment but there was talk earlier this year that Detroit Electric would be helping with getting the cars registered with whatever authorities there are there. Not sure what happened with that whole project.

The Exora introduced new technologies in Protons that were not used before – more sensors for the airbag system and a Body Control Module. Datuk Syed Zainal says the new C-segment Persona replacement will implement these new features and add even more features to bring the new Proton up to international standards. Proton is currently in talks with various vendors on what can be implemented.

It is also in exploratory talks with some parties including a Chinese company (Europestar, SAIC-Roewe?) on collaborating on an SUV, and in talks via Lotus with a South Korean battery company and an electric motor supplier regarding EVs (what happened to Detroit Electric?).

It's already been a while since the Manual Transmission launch, finally I called up the Sales Supervisor of Pelantar Sistem S/B (a comprehensive Proton dealer) to arrange for a real test drive session.

I am proud to post my personal comments as it is different from typical Malaysian way of assessing a car (they normally trust rumours, knock the panels, slam the doors as well as justify by brands, which is shallow i think).

Here's the process, i brought wife along and expect showroom to allocate 2 more people to tag along so that tests can be performed with at least 4 human beings onboard, they have a very good test route by nature with a combination of bumps, potholes, uphill and slopes (go behind Plaza Phoenix and you'll know what i mean). The engine was started around 7pm, once online i was greeted by fully illuminated meter panel (looks better than optitron IMHO), and my first move was to reverse this 7-seater out from the canopy, i was kind of worried to familiarise myself to this lengthy MPV but at that moment i found myself worried too much, it was easy.

Due to so many rumours flew around about underpowered and problematic powertrain, i had put my main focus into the power delivery in the session, and it seems the cruise was very smooth even i had to slow down for speedbumps on a steep uphill, we felt happy as it didn't have any problems to regain torque, certainly this CamPro 1.6 CPS is very impressive to move 1.4 tonne of weight gracefully.

Public was easily misguided when they actually liked to drive A/T models, power output was scaled down by torque converter whilst this could be barely felt on smaller cars, became obvious when engine capacity is just enough for the weight, in this case the Exora, i had many discussions with a lot of people about mismatched configuration by putting 1.6 A/T for such a heavy MPV, therefore it is natural for the automatic gearbox to continuosly change gears or being reluctant to move, and this is not a fault but rather imperfect configuration.

It is suffice to say that real intended buyers of MPV will not look for excessive horsepower so that they can spin the wheels at traffic lights, therefore by choosing the manual version already put the issue far becoming irrelevant.

Back to drive and comfort:
- Cabin is quiet, suspension is nicely balanced (soft enough for comfort seating but not bouncy either upon rough roads), the well known Lotus drive and handling.
- Air-conditioning was mind blowing from speed-2 onwards, freezing cold for all 3 rows.
- Noise is very minimum and better than Persona, cabin fittings are good and quiet, engine sound during acceleration was muffled so nothing much of noise disturbance.
- I notice some slight improvements over the first production batch, steering wheel materials changed to better ones as well as the thicker compartment cover.
- Tried a short distance sprint and 1.6 CPS gave amazing response, for a 1.4 tonne thing with passengers.
- Found the audio player links seamlessly with bluetooth phones for handsfree via vehicle's sound system, plus answering buttons on steering wheel.
- BCM (body control module) is very thoughtful, doors don't unlock during powerdown to prevent destination hijacks, loads of user programmable AI features.

To summarise in fewer words: worth every cent for RM64,998.00

Safety priority

The Exora was awarded a 4-star EuroNCAP rating after 32 Exoras were crashed at the Applus+ IDIADA crash testing facility in Spain. As well as this, the Exora was awarded another 4-star rating by Malaysia's own MyVAP evaluation program.[5][6] One of the key features that made these ratings possible was the use of high tensile steel for the body cage, providing better stability and increased impact absorption during a collision. Side impact bars are also installed to reinforce the door frames and to absorb impacts from the side.[6]
Other safety features include an Antilock Brake System (ABS) to avoid skidding during an emergency brake and an Electronic Brake Force Distribution System (EBD) to ensure the correct amount of braking power is sent to the correct wheels according to the current weight distribution of the car. Two front airbags and pre-tensioner seat belts are installed for the front passengers

Unmatched performance

The Proton Exora chassis uses a MacPherson strut design at the front and a torsion beam at the rear.[1] It measures 4,592 mm (180.8 in) long, 1,809 mm (71.2 in) wide and 1,691 mm (66.6 in) tall with a wheelbase of 2,730 mm (107.5 in).[1] It is powered by the Campro CPS engine producing 125 hp (93 kW) and 150 N·m (110 lb·ft) of torque,[2] resulting the top speed of165 km/h (103 mph).
The average fuel consumption of 7.2 L/100 km (39 mpg-imp; 33 mpg-US).[3] The gearbox is similar to the Proton Waja and Proton Gen-2 but has a higher final drive ratio to help with power delivery.[4]
The Exora features a Body Control module which allows automatic activation and configuration of various vehicle functions such as door locking/unlocking, interior lamps, headlamps, brake lamps and wipers

New engine capasity and dimension

The photo that show a closer view of the new Turbo engine that our King and Queen previewed at Lotus in the UK just a little more than a week ago.

We get to see the top of the engine, the intake, as well as abit of the turbocharger peeking out from behind the block. The top of the engine looks slightly different from the Campro and Campro CPS engines. It looks more similiar to the Campro engine though because of the shape of the spark plug cover, but there are some minor differences in shapes. I’m not sure what the Campro IAFM looks like without the engine cover.

I’ve heard many times before that the new Proton Turbo engine will not have functions such as CPS which mean higher costs. Forced induction that is properly tuned can provide sufficient torque over a wide RPM spread thus you do not have to do funky things to improve airflow such as variable valve lift or timing. The turbocharged Campro engine that we saw in the Proton Exora Prestige earlier this year was also based on a regular Campro and not the Campro CPS.

Finally, I think we gotta also keep an open mind that this might not even be the production Campro Turbo engine in the first place. It may be just a bolt-on prototype similiar to the one in the Exora Prestige Turbo. But it sure is nice getting to see one part of what the Royal Family managed to see. After all, Proton is our national carmaker and whether you love them or hate them, I find that almost everyone wants to know everything about them!

Here's my info about Proton Exora
The Proton Exora is a compact MPV vehicle produced by Malaysia car manufacturer Proton and launched on 15 April 2009. It is a new model from Proton based on a new chassis. The development of this MPV starts from scratch and it is the first Malaysian-designed MPV. Fully undisguised photos of Proton Exora were leaked onto the internet on the 23rd of January 2009, ahead of the MPV's April 2009 launch date.Proton Exora MPV, a scan courtesy of reader waja2000. We can see a full frontal view of the Proton Exora’s dashboard here which also reveals a gate-type shifter for the automatic transmission.
It also have the first 7-seater 3 rows of seats which are 60:40 split for the 2nd row and 50:50 split for the third row. It also appears that the seats fold completely flat, which is good. The third row has some form of storage and cupholders integrated into the wheel arch intrusions, and we’re lucky Proton has completely abandoned any attempts to have stylo sporty door panels – they look completely normal even for the rear doors. The third row also has full 3-point seat belts too.
The photo cuts off just before the roof of the MPV so we cannot see the roof-mounted air conditioning vents but these were features that could be seen in the peek-a-boo box of the MPV interior at the Proton Technology Week.
