You sure don’t need me to tell you how bad our economy is right now. Some of you may have even seen decreased sales as a result of people being more cautious with their money these days. But there is hope and this week I discuss the Top 10 Ways to Recession Proof Your Business. By doing more market research and self-examination you will be better able to handle the needs of your market than your competitors who are blissfully ignorant about making changes to help keep their businesses afloat.

Even though you might feel as though you’ve done all the market research you can, it’s always a good idea to reevaluate your research findings, especially when there are factors - such as the economy - which you personally cannot control. Learn how these factors affect your market and try to adapt your business to address their new need.

While focusing on your market is important, equally as important is evaluating how your business runs and if there are any ways to make it run more smoothly or more frugally. Remember, your business is a growing thing that needs to adapt to changes but you also need to make smart business decisions.

By now you have probably heard about the CPSIA law that is aimed at protecting children from harmful products which contain lead but do you understand how it could possibly affect your business as a product seller? My guest this week is Michelle Pratt-Lienhart from Just Be Products and she says she may lose half of her clothing line because she cannot afford to test all her products.

Although the basis of this law is good, how it was passed with very little attention is up for debate. According to the CPSIA, each individual element needs to be tested for lead but it’s the responsibility of the reseller to test these products, rather than the manufacturer of these products.

As Michelle mentioned in the show, she sells such small batches of her clothing items that it is cost prohibitive to test each color ink and each t-shirt. However, if the ink and t-shirt manufacturers were held accountable and were mandated to test their own products, they could absorb the cost quite easily and WAHMs like Michelle would be able to keep their businesses open.

On a lighter note, our Spring Into a Better Business webinar is coming up on Friday, March 27, 2009 from 9am - 2pm. Guest speakers will discuss ways to improve your business in 2009. Sign up to receive regular updates and reminders.

The big buzz lately is how the new CPSIA law will affect small business owners who produce handmade children’s items. The law was passed in an effort to protect our children from dangerous lead levels but the very expensive required testing is forcing thousands of people to give up their dreams of creating and producing children’s items. Anything from wooden toys to handmade hairbows fall under this category and violators face very stiff penalties.

How many of you started your business as a hobby, just to see if it was a good idea and if your products would actually sell? Did you have a hard time balancing your hobby with your regular job? When did you feel confident enough in your new business to quit your full time job?

My guest this week is Craig Weindling of Smiley Dog. His pet supply delivery service started as a hobby, as a way to get bulk discounts on pet food and toys when he bought in bulk with some friends. After more of his friends found out about his “hobby” they wanted in on the deal and eventually told some of their friends. Before he knew it, Craig was working on his “hobby” every waking moment when he wasn’t working at his regular job.

Craig’s ambition, careful planning, and dedication to customer service have all contributed to his success. Other bigger companies have tried to compete with him in the Seattle area but have failed. Listen in as Craig talks about his biggest challenges and his advice for any home business owner.

We’ve all heard the stories of the work at home crafter whose home becomes overrun with supplies and inventory. Or the direct sales consultant who’s required to carry inventory for her customers and it takes over every corner of her house. Pretty soon the kids have no where to do their homework and the family is left standing in the kitchen to eat their dinner.

Well, that doesn’t have to happen anymore! Small business owners CAN afford to hire an order fulfillment company to get the inventory out of their homes.

My guest this week is Janene Jaroscak of Trending Solutions. Janene shares her experience and why she decided to create this company whose purpose was to offer customer service support for work at home moms. Now that her company has grown, Janene has not forgotten the “little people” who helped create her success. Janene explains that her business helps to put the balance back into the life of the home based business owner.

Have you ever considered outsourcing the order fulfillment for your product? Why or why not? I’d love to hear your stories so leave a comment below.

This stay-at-home mom with no business experience invented a unique way to protect baby’s knees while crawling . Without dreaming of starting a business, other moms commented on her product and suggested she start selling them.

Armed with nothing more than a great invention, Marina did some research and networked with other business people and learned how to run her own business. Three short years later Marina’s Comfy Crawlers have been featured in Costco Connection Magazine and have garnered raves from moms across the country.

Marina is proof positive that if you believe in your product, you CAN succeed! Do your research, talk to others involved in selling products, and try to find answers to all your questions. Your hard work will quite possibly pay off in the end!
