A French photojournalist reveals graphic pictures of what is happening to people in the under-siege Syrian city of Homs.

Needless to say, I am very impressed. Not only because it certainly is graphic but the fact that today I am able to see a war in the making gives me weird and very unpleasant goosebumps.

A real event happening like, RIGHT NOW. This is the definition of horror.

Kindness for One Day in 2012

Can it be possible?

I say we can practice a little more kindness every day. I also think that what Orly Wahba did in late 2010 by founding Life Vest Inside is admirable and teachers all around the world should join this "Kindness Boomerang" movement. She is often quoted as saying, “Kindness is not something you do – kindness is something you ARE!” Which couldn't be more true!

Using the "One Day" song in the background, written by Matthew Paul Miller better known by his Hebrew name and stage name Matisyahu, (who's by the way, turning 33 on June this year), this video of a one continuous shot following the flow of kindness from character to character around a whole city block can make a positive impact to the following years to come. Or just in time before the world ends!
OK, bad joke but you know what I mean. Just please be kind.

Why we need a Savior

Another day in paradise and the current Secretary of Education of Puerto Rico, Jesús Rivera Sánchez, is accused of doubtful reputation and he must be fired. Another Secretary of Education that is going to be fired just because people aren't really aware of all the important situations that are happening inside this public agency.

Just as president Barack Obama said once, Arne Duncan - a secretary of Education of the United States in 18 years to come here - insisted on Monday that the education is a subject of civil rights; that it is not a secret that for many years has been a revolving door of Puerto Rican leaders and that is unacceptable.

The ex- secretary of Education, César Rey, also said during this activity at the Convention Center in San Juan, that when he left the Secretariat (2004) were 60 thousand students of special education, and now there are 170 thousands of them. Not hundred students, thousands! The same special education that is lack of defined structure to guarantee the certainty of the services.

But wait, our responsible teachers were protesting outside the Convention Center against the charter schools and most of them doesn't have a clue of what these kind of schools have to offer. Wait, what? Yes, they insisted that the charter schools discriminate and end up hurling the poor students. While in recent studies, 42 thousand students graduate with a ninth degree and only 30,000 get to make it to high school in Puerto Rico. Poor students! Is not that charter schools are the solution for all this mess but somehow we have to consider a positive change for our public education. Still, these responsible teachers were not in their classrooms that day, they were there...protesting against something that has not been approved yet by the government.

Speaking of which, Fortuño and Pierluisi told Duncan about a proposal for the interchange of teachers, we teach Spanish in the continent and the Americans English in the island. What a marvelous solution! It seems that English teachers will never be worthy enough here in Puerto Rico.

If we continue with this mediocre scenario we can end up thinking that we need a savior. That we should get Víctor Fajardo out of jail and clean this mess. That Fortuño should pardon him as an exchange of his services to the system. But that's just a crazy idea. I truly believe that God is blessing America and hating Puerto Rico.

It doesn't matter how it is or how it may end, anything can happen in this paradise of ours.

A blur with a bliss

Vemos en otras personas lo que no queremos ver en nosotros mismos. Creo que lo hacemos sin darnos cuenta, no queremos aceptar nuestros errores y siempre culpamos al otro. He conocido muchas personas a través de mi vida que tienden a ser así y debo admitir que llegué a estar en esas por mucho tiempo. Aunque puedo afirmar también que esa 'mala costumbre' sigue presente, escondida en alguna esquina de mi sub-consciente que a cada rato le echa la culpa al tapón por llegar tarde.

Es difícil aceptar nuestros errores, aceptar que las desgracias las acercamos nosotros mismos. Es una constante lucha de egos internos y estupideces cotidianas que se convierten en la rutina diaria. ¿Cómo podemos resolver este dilema? Pues no lo sé todavía. Lo que sí sé es que no puedo culpar al diablo por algo que hice yo con mis manos, no puedo decir que dios me ha abandonado si todavía no le he visto acompañarme, no puedo comprar un auto si no tengo el dinero en el banco y mucho menos puedo opinar si no sé de lo que están hablando.

Lo que sí sé es que puedo tratar de entender mi entorno y ver el "blur with a bliss".

El Departamento de Educación de Puerto Rico celebró este año el progreso de los estudiantes, pero los estudiantes no alcanzaron el promedio adecuado. Solo un 40% alcanzó el promedio esperado en la materia de Español. ¿Qué pasó con el 60% restante? Eso mismo.

You guys remember what happened with the Twin Towers? Well the same happened in Oslo, Norway.
Norway wouldn’t believe that this would happened to them. It’s really scary. Many people died and many are still hurt. This is scary. And then you say you believe in God...

When I first read the news about what happened, I realize how much we ignore about the world surrounding us. It is the kind of event that makes us more vulnerable about life itself. Sometimes we need this to realize that not everything is bright and beautiful out there.

May those people find their way of healing.

Reflexiones en un 4th of July

Desde que recuerdo en mi casa siempre se ha celebrado el cuatro de julio. Mi padre fue Sargento en el ejército americano y había participado en la guerra de Vietnam. Incluso estuvo missing in action por dos años y llegaron a enviar la bandera estadounidense a mi casa con una carta de condolencias del entonces presidente Nixon. Pero aunque lo mutilaron y maltrataron física y emocionalmente por una causa ajena, mi padre siempre demostró respeto a la bandera americana pero sobre todo siempre celebraba por todo lo alto el cuatro de julio.
Debo admitir que cuando niña nunca le presté atención y mucho menos la importancia que tenía el dichoso día festivo en el cual me vestían de traje blanco con listones azules y rojos. Me encabronaba comer hotdogs y esperar a que fueran las 9pm para ver el display de fuegos artificiales que duraba una hora para luego regresar a casa intoxicada de embutidos en mi sistema.
Para cuando cumplí mis 21 opté por negarme a asistir a la dichosa celebración con mis padres haciendo un berrinche de patriotismo mal infundado. Hasta que no terminé de decir mis babosadas mi padre no pronunció palabra alguna, simplemente me miraba atónito todo el tiempo. Al finalizar mi discurso obsoleto de chamaquita universitaria mi padre me dijo: "All men were created equal, and that includes you and you are blessed with certain rights, that are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness y si no entiendes eso, búscalo en el diccionario. Pero si lo entiendes, es porque sabes que vivimos en una colonia que pertenece a los Estados Unidos de Norte América, la que paga por la universidad que yo no te puedo pagar. Acaba y móntate en el carro y no jodas más"'

Entonces, habiendo dicho eso, doce años después puedo decir que aunque la declaración de la independencia de EEUU trata de las quejas que redactaron las colonias en contra del rey de Inglaterra, sí puedo decir que la única frase importante me la enseñó mi padre. La que dice que todos somos iguales y tenemos derecho a ser libres. Tal vez por eso él celebraba el 4 de julio, por respeto a una frase que le daba esperanzas de un mejor futuro. Porque realmente creía en lo que dice ese documento histórico.

Me alegra que ya no pueda ver en lo que se ha convertido ésta colonia.

Sometimes I like to do nothing, like any other person around me. I guess it's because that is our nature.

The feeling of chaos drives me crazy when I need to organize something. For example, my school files. Non-existent. But I brought two huge boxes with colored divisions a few months ago. They're still there. But honestly, I'd tried a few times to organize my damn papers.

Well, procrastination is a beautiful word indeed!

You're guilty until proven innocent. (I think this man is guilty but that is just me and my humble opinion.) Maybe I'm wrong and those girls just wanted to fuck their teacher who happens to be their physical education teacher and volley ball coach at the same time...

Let's see how far this shit goes on. Justice in this island is not that good anymore. And to all other teachers around the world, let me tell you this: you can teach but you CAN'T TOUCH!
