“There are many entrepreneurs who have created great products but need help manufacturing, distributing and retailing that product to consumers,” said Dickinson. “Together with Metroland Media Group, Arlene Dickinson Enterprises will be in a unique position to develop, support, and accelerate this process for innovative products and services. Metroland is a progressive and entrepreneurial Canadian media organization with experience in promoting and selling products in both Canadian and International markets, and I am very pleased at the prospect of working with them.”

You may recognize Arlene from the CBC show Dragon’s Den, as well as the communications firm that she started over a decade ago called Venture Communications. Metroland’s footprint includes over 100 publications and numerous websites, which makes for great distribution potential for entrepreneurs that work with then. Let’s hope this partnership will bear fruit than the last one.

Bill has shared with Profectio the details of the new venture that he is calling Name Ninja, which is a boutique domain name consulting firm.

“With the massive expansion of the Internet namespace due to the upcoming rollout of hundreds of new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs), the global demand for expert domain name advice and strategy is going to explode,” predicts Bill Sweetman, Name Ninja’s President and Lead Ninja.

Name Ninja will help companies acquire, manage, protect, and profit from their domain names.

While at Tucows, Bill helped to triple the Domain Portfolio business to over $10M in annual revenue and increased sales volume 800%.

As they continue to beef up their real-time bidding (RTB) offering, Toronto-based AcuityAds has just announced a new technology partnership with Digital Element, a provider of IP Intelligence and geolocation solutions. AcuityAds Inc. has agreed to use the NetAcuity Edge solution to help facilitate the delivery of hyperlocal geotargeted advertising campaigns in the United States and Canada.

As a sub-sector of digital marketing, RTB has seen a significant upswing and was predicted to be 13% of all digital spending in 2012 according to eMarketer, and the IAB estimates that 22 percent of all online video advertising and 19 percent of display are now bought through RTB platforms.

“There is no question that programmatic buying is becoming the future of marketing as more and more advertising inventory becomes digital,” said Marco Muzzi, marketing director for AcuityAds. “This is an extremely exciting time for digital advertising. Being able to offer an accurate hypertargeting solution helps us ensure our clients are reaching consumers in the most relevant geographic locations which, in turn, drive performance and results for their campaigns.”

In addition to the Edge technology, AcuityAds is utilizing Digital Element’s ISP and proxies data solutions.

Back in April, Waterloo-based Fondo announced they plan to acquire WIND Mobile, last week TELUS acquired Mobilicity so the natural question is what will happen with Public Mobile?

Back in April, Waterloo-based Fondo announced they plan to acquire WIND Mobile, last week TELUS acquired Mobilicity so the natural question that one may ask is – what will happen with Public Mobile? The mobile company has been rather quiet expect for the joint announcement they made last month with Mobilicity and WIND Mobile where the three organization agreed to withdrawal from the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association. Here’s an excerpt from the press release:

“When we were first approached by the CWTA, we were promised clear and fair representation on issues of true industry alignment,” said Simon Lockie, Chief Regulatory Officer for WIND Mobile. “But despite making our objections and concerns abundantly clear on numerous occasions, the CWTA has repeatedly failed to honour this promise, leaving us no alternative but to withdraw.”

“It has been evident for quite some time that, rather than being a true industry association which represents the views of all players regardless of size, the CWTA has instead largely been an advocate for Rogers, TELUS and Bell, and often directly contrary to the interests of new entrant wireless carriers” said Bob Boron, General Counsel and Senior Vice-President, Legal & Regulatory Affairs for Public Mobile.

“We have spent the better part of three years repeatedly voicing our opposition to the CWTA on a wide range of matters to the point of issuing a press release in January 2011 that publically expressed our dissent on the CWTA’s position on wireless consumer protection,” said Gary Wong, Director of Legal Affairs for Mobilicity. “There seems to be a blatant disregard of the new entrants in favour of acting in the best interests of the Big Three carriers and it is unacceptable.”

Launching a new wireless carrier isn’t cheap, and the industry association seems to have been no help, so perhaps Public Mobile shall also find a bidder for itself in the arms of Bell or Rogers. First Rogers might want to solidify a new CEO as the one one prepares to retire.

Another interesting question,

Fongo has been very open about their intend to acquire WIND Mobile, and recently mobile communications company launched a new campaign called “Fongo Faces,” which Fongo hopes will convey to Canadians that they embrace a more open mobile environment in Canada where the power of mobile data plans in the hands of consumers.

“We’ve been programmed as Canadians to believe we can choose from only three telecom companies— the blue team, the red team or the green team—and these companies control so much of what we see and do on a daily basis,” said Dave Bullock, President of Fongo Inc. “Millions of Canadians are stuck in expensive contracts with their wireless carriers but that doesn’t mean their carriers should control what they see and feel each time they use their phones.”

Fongo Faces allows users to choose which team they want to play for, whether it be a charity, movement, band, university, or sports team—or they can build their own Fongo Face in about 10 minutes. Fongo Faces are easily customized with graphics, social feeds, ads and links to enable users to choose what they see each time they place a call, send a text, or check their voicemail.

Fongo Faces come with Fongo’s portfolio of free mobile phone services, already used by hundreds of thousands of Canadians. These free services include texting, local and long distance calling across Canada, visual voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, and call forwarding. Earlier this month, Fongo added free conference calling and Fongo Places, a directory and mapping service powered by Yellow PagesT, to its menu of services.

The rumours we had heard early last week were true, and Yahoo acquired blogging site Tumblr for $1.1 billion over the weekend as it tries to remake it self, and some say become "cool."

The rumours we had heard last week have trued out to be true and Yahoo has acquired blogging site Tumblr for $1.1 billion over the weekend as it tries to remake itself, and some say become “cool.”

Tumblr was launched in February 2007 and has grown to host over 108 million blogs as of May 2013, many compare its offering to that of WordPress. However Tumblr has been in the news quite a bit as users have started to post pornographic material on the site which Tumblr is aware of and trying to get rid of while maintaining its growth pattern. Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer has publicly said “We promise not to screw it up, ” in reference to the way in which Yahoo has often messed up acquisitions in the past – remember Geocities?

So what does this all mean to you, the Canadian advertisers and marketers?

Yahoo has said it will integrate its search product into Tumblr

Tumblr tend to attract predominately 18 – 24 year olds

Tumblr reaches 20% of Canadians online (according to comScore)

In June 2012, Tumblr had entered into its first major advertising deal with ADIDAS so maybe we’ll see the Canadian ADIDAS do something in the coming months. Either way, what ever is left of the Yahoo Canada sales team, because we certainly do not know will soon have another product to sell.

Sounds like Bill’s taking a page out of the Fernandes-McDougald playbook.
