Pesquisa do Instituto Sangari diz que chegam a mais de 1 milhão de pessoas o número de vítimas de homicídios no Brasil e Alagoas é o Estado que ocupa o primeiro lugar no ranking nacional, seguido pelo Espirito Santo.

Neste estudo, o município da Serra ocupa a 16a. posição nacional, sendo o primeiro colocado no solo capixaba, seguido por Cariacica, em 26o. lugar. O Espírito Santo reduziu em quase R$ 25 milhões o investimento no policiamento em comparação do ano de 2009 para 2010, de acordo com dados do Anuário Brasileiro de Segurança Pública. O estudo é feito pela organização não governamental (ONG  Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública em parceria com o Ministério da Justiça.
