Keep it simple

One of the most important things to remember when designing a Web page is to keep it simple. You do not need fancy graphics, Flash, Java, scrolling text and the like. Don't try to impress anyone with your Web building skills.

All you need is a professional logo, a crisp, fresh look and simple navigation links. Be backward compatible. Using cutting edge technology can exclude readers. Many if not most users will be at least one generation behind, so don't shut them out.

Keep page size as small as possible. That means using a small logo, and images only if absolutely necessary. No one will wait 30 seconds for your page to load.

When designing Web pages, it is typically a good idea to avoid nested tables (i.e., tables inside tables) and long vertical tables, as they take a long time to load. Ideally, your pages should consist of stacks of tables, which make your pages appear to load faster, as the top tables load first, giving the user something to read while waiting for the rest of your page to load.

Provide useful information

Most people use the Web to find information that they can actually use. So make sure that your readers will find your information useful for them.

Design Web pages so that all important text and images are above the fold. This is the part of the page that your users will see first.

The most significant information should be accessible to users without scrolling down the page. People will scroll, but only if they think there's something of interest to them on your page.

Home page

Use plenty of subheadings. They should expand upon the story hinted in the main heading, and draw the reader inexorably into reading the body text. Format them as separate lines, or as a lead-in sentence to a paragraph.

It's more important for Web page design to make your text readable than to fill every inch of the screen.

In order to avoid large text blocks, break up text into smaller sub-categories. This will make your Web page more aesthetically pleasing, and more reader-friendly. Sub-categories also allow readers to select certain portions of content that they are interested in, rather than making them sift through large text blocks.

Make sure that your paragraphs are not too long - each paragraph should be no more than 3 or 4 sentences long. People on the Web simply don't have the time or the inclination to read long paragraphs.

What it costs to make a website for "free"

The word free is enclosed in quotation marks because all the sites that offer free website hosting really don't. You may not have to pay in hard currency, but one way or another you do pay.

Most free website hosting companies force you to place banner or pop-up ads on all your pages in exchange for the service. Others enforce you to receive email with ads from their sponsors. Many companies don't allow to build free websites for commercial use.

OK, so you built this fantastic website, published it, signed up for Google Analytics, check it each day and nothing is happening. Reminds me of a comment I made in previous article how so many people think if you build it they will come… Unless you are McDonald’s, Wall Mart, Home Depot… It just isn’t going to happen.

In that previous article I gave an example of how you can be creative when increasing your content to drive traffic to your website as a means of increasing your ranking in the Search Engine Result Pages or SERP’s for short.

In this article I am going to discuss another hands on approach.

The first thing you have to understand is generating traffic takes time. You should be devoting at least 3 hours a week to optimizing your new website, increasing the content by adding additional pages, writing blog articles, and chasing the people you want to look at your new website.

A fantastic way to drive traffic to your website is to write a blog. No matter what you do for business, I am sure there is something you can say about it. For example; you have a dog products business. You sell everything from collars to doggie strollers. You don’t think you can write anything about dog stuff? Sure you can, write an article about your newest product lines, mention some of the outrageous toys you have for sale.

Do you sell dog training aids? Pick one and write an article how the aid is best used and what your professional opinion is about it.

Not only does a person that does not own the training aid get to see how it is used, (which can persuade the buying decision) someone that just purchased one will also find your article informative if they are not sure how to use it.

People who are not your customers, who own dogs, are going to find your articles by searching for information on dog products on the Internet. If they do a search for “training aid reviews” and they find your blog on that training aid, they may become new customers when they discover you sell the product.

If you write an article about any product, mention you sell product in your store. Suddenly you are gaining customers that were not looking for your store, they were looking for information about a certain training aid they want to buy. They found your article, which led them to your store, and now they are your customer. It really is that easy and it works.

Another good way to find customers is by participating in online forums. Business forums about small business development and marketing are fantastic, not only can you learn something but you can promote your business at the same time. Every time you post a question or make a comment in a forum, put a link to your business in your signature. Talk about your business in your replies. Tell everyone “I have a dog product business and this is something that worked for me” or “I have a dog product business, can anyone give me advice how to”…

I am sure you get the idea.

Readers of those forums will own dogs. When they see a post from you and discover you have a dog business and the link is in your signature, they are going to look out of curiosity. If they see something they like, they are going to buy it.

There are a lot of interesting ways you can find customers, the main thing, be creative, get the word out. Someone will see your page and like what you are offering.

Internet Copywriting: Writing Website Copy, Part One

There are some pretty vast differences between writing copy for print articles and writing copy for the Internet. When writing copy for magazines, newspapers, etc., you focus on conveying compelling information to the reader through the introduction of an idea and a follow through of support. When writing copy for the Internet, you have two “viewers” you need to consider, the person who will be reading your website, and the robot that has been sent by the search engines.

Writing copy for your Internet searchers is all well and good if they can find the information you are publishing. If you do not consider how that information is found, your website and its information will be lost somewhere in the Internet abyss never to be seem by anyone.

There are two very distinct styles of writing between print media and website. Think of a pyramid, print copywriting begins at the top of the pyramid. An idea is conveyed and as you progress through the article more substance supporting the idea is revealed and ends with a summary.

Internet copywriting is completely opposite. Invert the pyramid. Cover the most important information first and work your way down to a basic subject. Website readers form an opinion of your website is a matter of seconds, if you can not grasp their attention immediately with the information that is relevant to their search, they will navigate away for your page and find one that will.

Search robots “read” the information the same way. The subject of your website is mined in the first few lines of text in your HTML code. If you do not effectively describe the content of your website in the first few lines, your website will not be indexed the way you hope it is.

HTML copywriting structure follows this hierarchy:

The page title: This is the information described between the <title> </title> tags found between the <head></head> section of your website. It is also the first line of the search results. You have a limit of 80 characters, including spaces, for your title. You need to include the most important keywords that describe your website content as well as a location if your services are limited to a certain city or state. The page description: This is the information contained in the meta description tag of the <head></head> section of your website. The first 160 characters of the first paragraph are the most important real-estate on your website and I will often use the same text that is in my “Meta Description” as the beginning sentence of my first paragraph</p>.

If you properly imbed the most relevant keyword terms of your website within those four sections, you will begin to ensure your website will be indexed properly for the terms most relevant to the content of your site.

These four sections will be the make or break difference of you being found in search results by people most interested in the information on your page.

Meta tag optimization results in high search engine ranking

I was compelled to publish this article after noticing several SEO specialists writing in reference to meta tags being dead or obsolite. Meta tags are not dead. I will be the first to say, meta tags are utilized by all major search engines and are very much in use and extremely important to search engine ranking.

If you need proof of how important meta tags are, try removing your meta tags and watch what happens to your search engine positioning. Your site will plummet to the depths of the unvisited web. Meta tags are frequently an overlooked factor which can improve the ranking of most any website.

This is an example of how vital meta tags are to your webpage and to your search engine ranking. Our website ranks #6 and #7 consistantly on MSN for the keyword submit site. To test the dead meta tag theory, our source code editor changed one word in the meta description tag and we dropped to #15 in the search results.

Our rankings on Google and several other search engines suffered even more so. Needless to say we made changes accordingly. All major search engines definitely utilize meta tags for a description of the webpage and for indexing within the search results.

The title tag is one of the most important on page factors to consider. This is because search engine spiders read this tag first and place a high level of importance on the keywords found there. The title tag is also used for the title of your listing in the search results.

The contents of your title tag will also appear in the top left corner of the browser bar. Correct title tag optimization is essiential and will result in a dramatic increase in your search engine ranking. The title tag should contain at least one or more keywords to be of any relevance to the webpage.

Search engine spiders read the description meta tag next. This tag is often used as a website description in the search results. The description tag should also contain a few keywords. The keyword meta tag is also vital to search engine ranking giving search engine spiders a sample of relevant text and content within a webpage.

Other meta tags include robots, resource, author, copyright etc. These tags are not as important as the title, description and keyword tag, however they should be included if possible. To acheive high search engine ranking optimize your meta data. Proper onpage optimization will greatly improve your search engine placement

Six ways to experiment with AdSense and grow your earnings

These days, Darren runs a handful of successful blogs, his most popular being Digital Photography School, and has co-authored a book. He also posts regular tips and advice on ProBlogger.net, a respected and successful resource for bloggers around the world.

We recently caught up with Darren at his home office in Melbourne Australia, and asked him about his experience with Google AdSense.

October 4, 2003 is a date I'll never forget - that was a day that my life changed. It was the day that I discovered AdSense and added it to my very first blog. I added that first advertisement to my blog on a whim, with what I thought was the lofty dream that I might be able to pay for my blogs hosting costs. Over 5 years later, those little text ads have paid my mortgage, fed my family, and enabled me to move my blogging from a hobby, to a part time job, to a full time job and beyond.

It's not been an 'overnight success' by any means but as I've learned to use it, AdSense has been one of my highest online income streams.

My #1 Tip for Using AdSense

If I had to narrow my advice on using AdSense down to a single word it would be 'experiment'. Let me explain.

That day back in October of 2003 I had no idea on what I was doing. The next day when I logged in to see how much I'd earned it was barely enough to buy me a coffee.

However, on that day I decided that those few dollars in earnings showed potential and I determined within myself to learn how best to use AdSense to grow that income. Almost everything I've learned since that day has been through trial and error.

It has been a long process of testing and tracking results. You see, while there are a few good home truths that seem to work on most sites, every website that I've used AdSense on is different. Some things work well on some sites, but it is rare to find something that will work on every site. As a result I tend to experiment with my use of AdSense in these six ways:

Ad Position - Most AdSense publishers have seen the neat little heat map that AdSense has produced to show where ads work best on websites. In general it works fairly well and is a great place to start, but make sure you experiment with new positions for ads and see what works best for your site.

Hint: Ads near (or even surrounded by) content have worked the best. I've also found ads at the end of content perform well. People get to the end of reading your article and then are looking for something to do or click -- an ad positioned there can work well.
Numbers of Ads - More ads earn more than less ads... don't they? Unfortunately it isn't always the case.

Test different combinations and numbers of ad units on your site. There's usually a 'tipping point' where you hit a ceiling of how many ads your users will accept -- push it too far and you could hurt reader engagement, traffic, and in the long run your earnings. On the flip side of this, don't be afraid to have more than one or two ads on a page, particularly if you have long pages with lots of content.
Ad Design - I can still see the first ads that I first used on my blog back in 2003. I can still see them because they fried their imprints into my retina -- they were so LOUD!

I figured that the ads would do best if people noticed them so I went for the most crazy color scheme I could come up with. Over the years I began to experiment with different combinations of ads and found that more subtle or blended ads tended to work best for me. Having said that, you can sometimes blend too much, to the point that the ads become invisible to your reader. So test different colors and designs of ads to see which work best. Use the ad rotating tool that AdSense offer publishers to rotate different designs to work against ad blindness among regular readers.
Ad Sizes - AdSense offers us a range of different ad sizes, so experiment with them all to see which works best. Hint: Some might think that the bigger the ad the better it performs. This is not always true.

For example, I found that the 'large rectangle' ad (336 x 280) didn't work as well for me as the smaller 'medium rectangle' ad (300 x 250). It turns out that more advertisers (at least those in my niche) prefer the medium rectangle ad as it's a more standard ad unit size than the larger one. Again, the key is to experiment and see what works best for your site and niche.
Ad Formats - I've found that choosing image and text ads works better than just choosing text ads, but that's not the only choice we get as AdSense publishers.

I've had blogs where the link unit ads were the best performing units on the site while on other sites it didn't really perform at all. You'll never know unless you test it!
Which Content Converts? - One of the best advances that AdSense has made in the last year has been the integration between it and Google Analytics. To be honest I'm still digging into the metrics that this opens up, but the insight that this gives has amazing potential to increase earnings.

By looking at this data you can see what type of content is converting and what isn't. You can also see what type of traffic is converting and what isn't. For example, I've found that search engine referrals are converting better than traffic from social media sites on one of my blogs. Knowing this is powerful as it tells you what type of ads to serve to what types of traffic, what type of promotion to put effort towards, and what type of content to write more of.

Test Track Test Track....

There are books, blogs, articles, forums, and other kinds of resources available to AdSense publishers to help them learn how to use AdSense better. However, in my experience the best way to learn is to 'do'. Put time aside to try new things and then put more time aside to review what you learn.

But don't leave it at that. When you learn something -- test it against something else (do some research on A/B split testing to learn how to do this). This continual learning will help you to grow in your own expertise of AdSense and increase your earnings.

1. Tell people about it. Word of mouth is the best marketing tool that you have at your disposal so don't be afraid to brag about your blog every chance that you get.

2. Link to your own articles. You can do this within your blog, of course. But also make sure that you are using links to your own work if you do any sort of blog writing for other people. (Of course, make sure that you're allowed to do this.)

3. Use Craigslist. There are dozens of different ways that you can use Craigslist to promote your blog and you should be using every single one of them.

4. Get active on social bookmarking sites. Top ones that I would recommend as a blogger are Mixx and StumbleUpon but there are lots of big and small ones out there to keep you busy. The key here is to choose just a few and then be truly active on them on a regular basis. This gives you more credibility on the site and drives more traffic to your blog.

5. Visit the blogs of other people who write on similar topics and leave thoughtful comments there. Include your blog link in the "website" section of the comment form and people will start turning up on your blog.

6. Add a link to the blog on all of your social networking profiles. If you're on Facebook or LinkedIn, you should make sure people can find your blog there.

7. Add a link to the blog on your email signature. Also add a link to a specific post that you like.

8. Business cards. Every blogger should have business cards and should hand them out liberally. Very few do.

Keyword Terms

Keywords are what searchers use to find information, they can be single words but are most often short terms specific to the information they are searching for. One of my blog’s most popular keyword search terms is

“ Profit Way ”

For part two of this series I want to discuss further choosing keyword terms and their placement within your website that is very important to search robots as well as the beginning of optimizing your website copy for search engines.

When choosing keywords you need to focus on the terms most relevant to your site and variants of those keywords. Google uses a stemming technology that when appropriate, will search not only for words that are your core search terms, but also words that are similar to some or all of those terms. Basically, you don’t want to use the same keywords over and over again. Mix it up a little but stay on subject. A great resource for finding similar keyword terms can be found here: http://www.visualthesaurus.com/ This is a visual Thesaurus and a very handy tool for discovering similar terms for keywords that’s NATURAL to your readers and effective for search engines.

Keyword Placement

In part one of this Internet copywriting series I defined the most important sections of your website to include the keywords and keyword terms that are the most relevant to the information on your website. The next things that would fall sequentially in the list I began in part one are the following:

Anchor Text: Anchor text are links to more information on your website. If you have a company that provides a kaleidoscope of services, your website will be very segmented. Each one of those segments will be linked to, and those links begin in anchor attributes <a></a>. Here is the basic html code for a link:

There are two very key parts of the link, the filename in italics and the description of the link in bold. Search engines use this information to begin to understand the content of the page being linked to. In this case, the link points to our page on Internet Profit Way. File names or descriptions that do not use keywords are not of any use in explaining content to search engines. When everything counts, you have to do everything you can to define the content of your pages.

Alternate Tags: Alternate text is displayed in place of photo’s when your website is being viewed in a text only browser. If your photo’s theme is relevant to your website, it is a good idea to use keywords that are also relevant to the page the image is located within. Here is an example of an alt tag used with the title of the image:

Directory Names: Keep your directory names specific. If you decide to break down and file information by category, keep the file names relevant to the information contained within them.

When writing effective copy for the Internet, remember the pyramid example from part one. The inverted pyramid style of writing is what is the most effective for of internet copywriting. Focus on keyword terms and their placement, and you will be on your way to having an effective website that ranks well in search results.

Effective Web Page Design

There are a lot of different types of web page layouts, as many as you can creatively imagine, but what are the most effective for driving conversions and being found on the internet?

I think if you ask 30 different people you will get 30 different answers.

I prefer a segmentation design approach. What is a segmentation approach you ask?

Simple.

Most businesses today are doing more than one thing. Take a piece of paper and write down all the things your business does and break them down by groups. Lets use something difficult for an example, a law firm.
Your typical law firm website will have one landing page, it is the “home” page for the site that all the traffic is driven to. This page will have information on the partners, and the scope of the services, perhaps a contact form, and that is pretty much about it.

Informative? Yes. Effective? No. What has been created by this type of page is another drop in the bucket of all the other web pages on the internet for lawyers. Makes it a little hard to compete and optimize a page for a lawyer who is really, just another lawyer.

A much more effective approach to web design and search engine optimization is segmentation of a business. Our law firm example specializes in four different fields, personal injury, divorce, litigation, and criminal defense.

Create a page for each service as if it was the only page you are going to create and optimize that page for that segment. Correlate all the pages together with one common header and footer and make those four pages your theoretical individual home page. Your default home page, the page that is reached when someone enters your URL into the address bar, should only be what I call a traffic control page. It should only be a quick introduction or flash presentation that will allow the viewer to find the other segments or categories of your business.

You say: “That is how most pages are built”, it’s not. The overall focus should be having your category pages the pages that are found in search results, not your default home page. Rather than focus your optimization efforts on a single home page, focus your efforts equally for each segment, or category page.

I have also had the experience with using separate domain names for separate categories, each page was an individual domain, the header and footer of each page was identical, the pages all linked together through that header, and if you did not pay attention to the address bar, you would swear you were on the same website. This also proved highly effective, especially when using keyword domain names.

These design considerations can prove to be very highly effective ways to optimize your business for search results. If I am searching for a divorce attorney, the page that has been optimized the best for that search term will be the page at the forefront of the search results and then all the “law firm” pages that deal with divorce and everything else will follow.

Basically, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Think of creative ways to be found on the Internet. There is a lot of competition; you need to be smarter and more creative than the rest to get the leads and sales your business needs to be profitable.
