“From The Hottest Fires, The Hardest Steel”

There are few of us who knows what it means to see real battle. Most of us will never spend a year thousands of miles away from our family being fired upon. We will never see our friends sent home in a box, draped in a flag. We’ll never hold our breath as mortar rounds whistle past our tents. Awful though they may be, these situations allows for the true strength of our character to be revealed. The intensity and sheer weight of the moment allow for greatness to surface. These are the moments that give birth to heroes.

A Defining Moment

On a desolate mountainside, in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan in 2005, Lt. Michael Murphy, and his team of US Navy Seals, found themselves in throes of one of these battles. Their position given had been given away and they were now taking fire from a much larger group of Taliban fighters. Pinned down, and severely outnumbered, it became obvious that support was needed. With only one possible means of communications, Lt. Murphy made the kind of decision defines a hero.

A Hero’s Charge

Lt. Murphy ran headlong into the fire, racing towards an opening that would allow for communications with Bagram Air Base. With composure rarely seen, he relayed his team’s precise position and detailed their needs. At one point in the communication Lt. Murphy was shot through his back, causing him to drop the communications device. In a display of incredible fortitude, he picked up the device and continued the communications. When he had completed the transmission, while severely wounded and in the middle of a fire fight, he thanked the individual on the other end and attempted to return to his men. He was then shot again, this time fatally.

The Ultimate Sacrifice

Lt. Michael Murphy, along with several other servicemen, died in that battle. But his courage allowed for one of his teammates, Marcus Luttrell to survive and the bodies of those lost to be recovered and returned to their families. His courage in the face of insurmountable odds made him famous. The strength of his character and his willingness to do what needed to be done, despite the personal cost, made him a hero.

A Gesture Of Gratitude

In CrossFit, a “Hero WOD” is a workout named after a fallen serviceman or woman as way for us to honor them. These workouts are among the most difficult in all of Crossfit. There are no free passes in a Hero WOD, you will be forced to fight to get through them. The pain is meant to remind us that others have given so much. The brutal nature of the workout draws from us things we didn’t know we had. It offers a glimpse of what we are truly capable of.

“Body Armor”

It became known as this story unfolded that Lt. Michael Murphy, like so many servicemen and women the world over, was an avid CrossFitter. His favorite workout, one he called “Body Armor,” is a devils brew of 100 pull ups, 200 pushups and 300 air squats, bookended by one mile runs. Lt. Murphy counted this grueling workout as a key in his preparation for pending deployments.

CrossFit Pays Homage

In August of 2005, CrossFit.Com posted “Body Armor” with a detail of Lt. Murphy’s service and a brand new name. In a typical CrossFit style tribute, this workout is now known as “Murph.” Since this workout was christened in his honor, “Murph” has taken on a life of it’s own. CrossFitters started doing “Murph” on Memorial Day as a way to humbly honor those who have given so much. CrossFit “Boxes” (Independent Affiliates) started hosting “Memorial Day Murph” workouts as a way to pay tribute while raising money for charity.

“Murph” Becomes A Phenomenon

Memorial Day Murph has caught fire. So much so, in fact, a nonprofit has been created to celebrate the memory of this great American. Memorial Day Murph has joined forces with Forged Clothing (founded by a pair of Navy Seals) in organizing a nationwide Memorial Day Murph workout. Forged has created an incredible t-shirt and 100% of profits are going to several charities including Marcus Luttrell’s Lone Survivor Foundation and the Navy Seal Foundation.

CrossFit has rallied in the memory of Lt. Murphy and celebrates Memorial Day as a day, not only of solemn remembrance, but a day of growing community. It has become a day of building friendships, celebrating with our families and raising money for those who have given us so much. Memorial Day Murph has become CrossFit’s own celebration of our REAL heroes and those that exemplify what it means to be an American.

We Cannot Forget

So often we take for granted the sacrifices made by so many to protect our precious freedoms. Our way of life depends on the service of these volunteers that we’ll never meet. We ask them to do the things that we cannot. They are put in untenable situations where their own survival hangs in the balance. We ask them to protect us. We ask them to be heroes.

They fight real battles, with real bullets and real lives lost. They leave behind real parents and real families. They give up lifetimes of Christmas mornings and babies first steps. They leave behind daughters that need help moving into college and sons that need someone to play catch with. There is no price greater than the price they pay. All they require in return is a “Thank you” and that we remember their sacrifice.

This Memorial Day, CrossFit will remember Lt. Michael Murphy and his fellow servicemen and women. Their memory is not far and we will honor it in the best way that we are able. We will sweat, we will struggle and we will bleed. For all you have given us, this is our humble tribute to you.

To those serving today and those who have come before, on behalf of Progenex:

Thank You. Your service and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Joining Elite Company

Among the ranks of professional athletes there exists a hierarchy of greatness. There are those who’ve amassed absurd numbers over the course of long and fruitful careers only to have a championship evade them. There is another level of athlete who’s built a wonderful resume and been fortunate enough to win a title along the way. Yet another group sits atop the Mt. Olympus of athletics, the Greatest of the Great athletes. Their long, celebrated careers culminate in multiple championships. They are discussed by last name only. Jordan, Montana, Bird. This year, 2008 CrossFit Games Champion Jason Khalipa looks to add his name to that list and become the first repeat champion in the history of the CrossFit Games.

Numbers Don’t Lie

Jason Khalipa has long ago put together the sort of numbers that solidify his status as one of the greatest in the brief history of CrossFit. He won his first trip to the CrossFit Games in 2008 and has returned every year since. He has never finished worse than 16th. He has three Top 10 finishes in four trips and finished the CrossFit Open Sectionals in 3rd Place in the NorCal Region this year. With Progenex in hand, Jason is poised to make a return trip to the Home Depot Center and the 2012 CrossFit Games.

Not Just Strong, Khalipa Strong

Jason Khalipa earned a reputation throughout CrossFit for his ridiculous all around strength. Jason isn’t just CrossFit strong, he is “You don’t need a jack, I’ll deadlift your Volkswagen while you change the tire” strong. The ability to clean and jerk 335 pounds alone lies just outside the grasp of most of us. The ability to do that, run a 400m in 63 seconds AND do 50 unbroken pull ups is what it takes to put you at the top of the CrossFit Games leaderboard every single year. When your box is selling Khalipa T-Shirt’s with your name on top and a picture of the “Incredible Hulk” beneath, you’re strength is officially on a different level.

Teacher And Ambassador

Jason Khalipa is not only a world class CrossFit competitor; he’s also a terrific teacher and ambassador within the CrossFit community. He works as a trainer for CrossFit HQ on the weekends, training tomorrow’s Coach’s. Jason also owns NorCal CrossFit, which has 3 locations in the San Jose area. In addition to being an affiliate owner and trainer Jason also holds at least six CrossFit certifications. When Jason Khalipa talks CrossFit, you’d be wise to listen.

Making A Run At History

As CrossFit grows the competition is getting stronger and the road to the Home Depot Center gets longer. Unfortunately for the rest of the NorCal Region Jason Khalipa has shown that, with the help of Progenex, he is getting stronger too. Jason had a tremendous showing in the 2012 CrossFit Games Open and earned a trip to the NorCal region with a 3rd place finish. With the NorCal Regional coming up and a trip to the CrossFit Games on the line it is nearly time for Jason Khalipa to “Hulk Up” and fight his way into the rarified air of “The Greatest of the Greats.”

Hearts all over the world of CrossFit have recently suffered a painful blow. You could almost hear the collective sigh from thousands of single athletes when the news broke that dashed so many farfetched dreams. Let us not be bothered with the reality that most of us never had a shot anyway, it still stung a little. All joking aside, congratulations are in order. Dave Lipson and Camille Leblanc-Bazinet are engaged!

CrossFit’s Power Couple

Dave Lipson and Camille Leblanc-Bazinet have developed an impressive CrossFit Games resume over the years. Dave has posted a pair of CrossFit Games births since beginning CrossFit in 2008 while Camille has made a pair of trips herself, and posted a pair of Top 10 finishes. Camille enters the 2012 Canada East Regional having placed first overall in her CrossFit Games Open Region and 5th in the world. Dave enters the 2012 Southern California Regional having placed 5th in the SoCal Region. Add that to Dave deadlifting THREE TIMES his bodyweight and the diminutive Camille deadlifting nearly three times her own and you have a legitimate CrossFit Power Couple.

Change Is Good

Getting engaged isn’t the only major life change in Dave Lipson’s life recently. The former professional baseball player and University of Rhode Island grad has recently signed on to coach at well-known CrossFit powerhouse, CrossFit Invictus. In addition to joining the “Sea of Green” both David and Camille have turned to CrossFit Invictus coach C.J. Martin to handle their programming as they prepare for the 2012 CrossFit Games. Coach Martin has amassed an impressive resume in his own right, with several of his athletes making the trip to Regionals in 2012. Adding his prowess to a pair of established CrossFit stars and the power of Progenex should present a formidable combination.

Cheers To The Happy Couple

When watching these individuals in the heat of a competition it’s easy to forget to that they are people outside the arena as well. While winning CrossFit competitions is a goal worthy of their dedication and our applause, life is what happens outside of the arena. Fortunate are those who find something that will last long past the days of box jumps and muscle ups. Good luck to Dave Lipson and Camille Leblanc Bazinet in their respective Regionals this year. And good luck to them on every day that follows in their new life together! May their lives be blessed with many Progenex Cereal filled mornings.

Congrats To Dave and Camille! Good Luck At Regionals!

Matt Chan may be one of the most well rounded, versatile athletes on the planet. His list of hobbies and his athletic resume are enough to cause fatigue in people outside of CrossFit. The scope of activities is varied, seemingly all inclusive and physically demanding. Matt Chan has made a life of testing his physical limitations at work and at play. Reading his bio causes two immediate questions to come to mind:

Does Matt Chan ever rest?

Can he earn his FOURTH Top 10 Finish at the 2012 CrossFit Games?

A Lifetime Of Fitness

In the days of his youth Matt Chan swam competitively, and post high school, he played water polo for Western Illinois University. Those years of early morning practices in the water and hours in the weight room surely played a role in Matt beating a US Navy Seal out of the water during the opening workout of the 2011 CrossFit Games. Post-graduation Matt decided to use his athletic prowess to assist those in need and became a firefighter and EMT.

In His Spare Time

When Matt isn’t busy saving lives and extinguishing blazes he also enjoys mountain bike races that last for ENTIRE DAYS and the occasional trip down the slopes. In his “Spare” time Matt also enjoys climbing the multitude of rock faces in his home state of Colorado. Tired yet?

CrossFit Is A Way Of Life

Just when it appeared that there was no more room in his schedule for further physical exertion Matt Chan found CrossFit. In the five years since, Matt has earned seemingly every CrossFit certification that a human being can earn. He is also a trainer on CrossFit HQ’s seminar training staff. Matt owns CrossFit Verve with his wife Cherie (who is also a Regional competitor this year) in Denver, Colorado. In four trips to the CrossFit Games Matt has earned an astounding THREE Top-10 finishes.

A CrossFit Games Veteran

The CrossFit Games have grown from a few workouts at a farm in Aromas California to a nationally televised event on ESPN2 and Matt Chan has been there for most of the journey. Matt enters the 2012 South West Regional after finishing 3rd in the open behind fellow CrossFit Icon, Chris Spealler.

Doing What He Loves

Matt Chan seems to have found a wonderful balance in making his “Work” the same as his “Play.” Physical activity is a passion for Matt Chan and he is doing what he loves every single day. To assist in recovering from whatever mountain needed climbed that day, Matt counts on Progenex to fuel his muscles and get him back on the field. Or mountain. Or platform.

There are few on this planet who could match Matt Chan’s motor. Fewer still who can match his athletic ability and sheer strength. The question still remains, when does he rest?

For Matt Chan, there is no time to rest. The 2012 CrossFit Games are waiting.

A Winding Road

Some of us recognize our calling in life from a young age. Our goals, our hopes and our dreams lay out in front of us like an easy road. All we have to do is point ourselves in the right direction and put our foot on the gas pedal. For others, that easy road isn’t found quite as easily. We work and we play, doing the best that we can, all the while waiting for our internal GPS to point us towards the right exit. The road wasn’t always clear for Christmas Abbott, but in 2006 she found CrossFit and her gas pedal has been on the floor ever since.

In an interview with MyAthleticLife.Com, Christmas admitted to having been branded an underachiever for a portion of her youth. She left college before graduating and headed to Iraq as a civilization contractor. A lifetime smoker, when she decided to alter her fitness plan, the act of running a mile was a near-crippling endeavor. One year later, smoke free, Christmas discovered CrossFit.

“CrossFit made me an athlete. It changed my life.”

For someone with a fairly limited athletic background and diminutive stature, CrossFit seems, on the surface, like an unlikely career choice. As is so often the case in sports, the numbers and tangible facts only tell a portion of this athlete’s story. Often the most important aspects of an athlete’s potential can’t be measured by a history page or a tape measure. Her positive attitude permeates every class she teaches and every workout she takes part in. Her intensity is unmatched. What Christmas may lack in size, she more than makes up for in intensity, heart and raw desire.

The Epitome of CrossFit

In six years Christmas has gone from learning CrossFit on her own, to owning CrossFit Invoke and being a competitive CrossFit athlete. She has also gained her Level 1 Certification and taken a spot on the CrossFit HQ Training staff. With some help from Progenex, Christmas has become a serious CrossFit competitor in addition to owner, coach and trainer. In 2011 her CrossFit Raleigh team finished third in the Mid Atlantic Team Regional and 16th at the 2011 CrossFit Games. In 2012 Christmas is again competing on an affiliate team but this time with CrossFit Invoke.

All Roads Lead West

Today, Christmas Abbott is an athlete. The tattoo-loving, crazy-dancing, recovering chocoholic has found her direction, and for Christmas and her bulldog “Fran,” life is good. Christmas admits that since she gave up chocolate to advance her training, she counts on Progenex for her chocolate fix and staying lean. With a trip to the CrossFit Games on the line, this pint-sized powerhouse cannot be overlooked when the Mid Atlantic Regionals fire up on May 4th. While it may not have been apparent early on, she has found her direction. Christmas Abbott is headed towards the Home Depot Center and there is very little that can slow her down.

Defining An Athletes Legacy

In the life of an athlete there are moments that define our legacy. They collectively serve as our calling card as an athlete once our careers have ended. These moments become the first thought in a fans mind when our name is spoken. Whether a triumph or a stumble, once these moments take place, it’s near impossible for an athlete to separate themselves from them. In 2012, AJ Moore is trying to change the tenor of his CrossFit Games legacy.

A Harsh Judgement

AJ Moore, of CrossFit DelRay Beach, was steamrolling the 2011 Mid-Atlantic Regional. He was charging towards the Home Depot Center until he was “No repped” approximately 60 times on the kettle bell swing portion of a tortuous workout known as “100’s.” He was the first athlete to reach this portion of the workout and was still attempting to finish this movement after every other athlete had passed him. He finished last in the region. So dominant was his performance that if he had finished a mere five spots higher he would have still qualified for the 2011 CrossFit Games. Despite a groundswell of support from fans and an effort to get AJ into the CrossFit Games he was forced to watch from the sidelines.

Poise Under Fire

In that moment, in the heat of competition, AJ poured his heart and soul into that workout. No one could have faulted him for questioning his judge. He could have lost his temper. He could have fallen victim to those inborn human emotions. He did not. He just kept working until the judge told him to move on. The fans screamed criticisms at the judge from the sidelines. AJ just kept working. His performance in the workouts tells you what you need to know about his physical attributes. The fact that he finished that workout without launching a kettlebell tells you what you need to know about his heart.

A Shot At Redemption

2012 is a new year and AJ Moore is poised to attack the South East Regional with redemption on his mind. AJ had another strong showing in the CrossFit Games Open and comes into the regional ranked 4th in the South East Region. Overall AJ posted a 54th place showing in the world wide standings at the end of the Open workouts. With Progenex in his bag and girlfriend Lauren Martin Rock of the Lingerie Football Leagues Baltimore Charm by his side, this former Army veteran and current CrossFit DelRay Beach coach is a wrecking ball is headed straight for the South East Regional.

Time To Add Another Page

The 2011 Mid Atlantic Regional was a defining moment in AJ Moore’s athletic career. His poise and heart in the face of incredible adversity showed us what type of person he is. Now only three days of grueling workouts, 59 fellow CrossFitters and one judge stand between AJ and a trip to the Home Depot Center for the 2012 CrossFit Games. It’s time to add another page to the legacy of AJ Moore. Hopefully this time the heading reads “CrossFit Games Qualifier.”

After a challenging career in the NFL and two years in the Marine Corps, Jeremy Staat is embarking on the trip of his lifetime. Jeremy and Wesley Barrientos, an Army veteran of Iraq, are in the middle of a cross-country bike ride, which will last 100 days, cover more than 4,000 miles and span 13 states. As veterans, Barrientos and Staat would like to raise awareness about the adversity soldiers face when they return from war. Staat wants to use his background in the NFL and the knowledge he has gained by being a part of the Marine Corps to make a difference in our society.

After transferring from junior college, Jeremy Staat played two seasons at Arizona State University and had dreams of being a star player in the NFL. He began his NFL career when he was chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 1998 draft. Jeremy stayed with the Steelers through the 2000 season and finished his NFL career with the St. Louis Rams.

Staat joined the Marines in 2006 and completed one tour in Iraq. While in Iraq, he served as an infantry machine gunner.

Wesley Barrientos was born in Guatemala but enlisted in the U.S. Army as soon as he turned 18. While on his second tour of duty he was wounded twice, first on December 13, 2005, an improvised explosive Device Detonated near his vehicle and he received minor cuts on his face. The second time, he was wounded on February 8, 2006, his vehicle was hit with a Rocket Propelled Grenade and received a shrapnel wound to the back of the head. His third tour of duty didn’t end so well. On Decenber 20, 2007, his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device, where he was severely wounded and had both legs amputated. After a Quick Recovery with a lot of help from family, friends, community, and staff, and now resides in Bakersfield, California and has a 2 year old daughter named Brianna. He’s also very active in the community and volunteers for different organizations that support veterans. His military awards include 3 Purple Hearts, 5 Army Comendation Medals, and two Army Good Conduct Medals.

A New World To Dominate

In the world of athletics there is no substitute for standing atop the podium and being handed the trophy. Having helped athletes from CrossFit to the NFL get stronger and recover faster, Progenex decided it was time to conquer another athletic avenue. We all know that Progenex can make athletes stronger and faster, but could it possibly bridge the gap between man and machine, and make a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series truck faster?

Competition In The Rear View

The fans at Kansas Speedway were treated to a surprise appearance of #TheSauce as James Buescher piloted his #31 Turner Motorsports Chevy, adorned in Black and Red Progenex livery, to his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory. The combination of Progenex and Turner Motorsports was simply too powerful for the rest of the field to overcome as James led 103 of the 167 laps on his way to victory lane.

Progenex Power Surge!

After posting four 2nd place finishes in his career, the 22 year old Texan was finally able to find his way to victory lane in the NASCAR World Truck Series. The victory catapulted James to 2nd place overall in the season standings. This race also marked the first time that James Buescher had piloted a Progenex vehicle. It’s hardly a matter of coincidence that his first victory comes in his first race behind the wheel of a Progenex vehicle. It’s no secret that #TheSauceGoesFast.

Try To Keep Up

While everyone is celebrating James Buescher’s first ever win in the Truck Series, there is reason for concern for the rest of the NASCAR Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series. Progenex has been named the “Official Supplement of Turner Motorsports.” With drivers such as Kasey Kahne, James Buescher and Nelson Piquet Jr. reaping the benefits of #TheSauce, the rest of NASCAR may be playing catch up from now on.

When I hit ‘deploy’ I crossed my fingers and closed my eyes. It was only the third time that I had actually tried to launch a web application. I glanced up and WODstack was alive. Cool.In August of 2010 I was just about fed up with training. I had been doing the same thing for 10 years and the last 2 years had been rough. Career change and babies make for poor sleep. My wife, sensing my frustration, suggested I try CrossFit. She had given it a go for a week and thought I might like it. My response was that I wasn’t really into ‘Bootcamps’ but I would try it. After one class I learned 2 things:

I was terribly out of shape

That everything I knew about fitness was going to change

I work my ass off in the coming months. Butterflies in my stomach on the way there and rips on my hands on the way back. I loved it. The community was awesome and I was re-learning what I already knew. Getting fit isn’t complicated, but it’s hard. Sleep well, eat good, and workout hard. What makes it difficult is that life has a way of pushing back. Work makes it hard to eat right. Babies make it hard to sleep, and working out hard is, well…hard. But you know what fights life back? Motivation. Motivation wins out over almost any obstacle. What I was finding in CrossFit was 2 types of motivation. The kind that comes from other athletes telling you to pick the bar back up, and the kind that comes from seeing you shave 3 minutes off your Fran time. Motivation creates progress, progress creates passion, and passion creates change…that lasts.

So what did I do? The same thing most people do at this stage. I started writing down my WODs. Then I went online. I started integrating my WOD results into my blog and then auto tweet them to Twitter. There I found other people like me. Now I was pumped to do the WOD and I was pumped to log it so I could connect with others.

So there I sat in November of 2011 contemplating the idea of piecing together some bits of code I had written in my attempt to learn Ruby on Rails (programming language). My simple thought was that others might like a place to log, retrieve, compare and share their WODs. A quick internet search lead me to believe there was room for such a solution. So, I tied together a blog, a Q&A app and an authentication system from another little experiment. It worked. I could post a WOD, edit it, delete it and comment on it…and so could others, at least on my local machine. I hit deploy, closed my eyes and it was alive. I created a Twitter account and followed 1000 people who had ‘CrossFit’ in their bios. Done and Done.

The next year was craziness. People actually started signing up and telling others about it. I scambled frantically to keep the thing afloat and add features. Privacy, Tags, Benchmarks, etc. Traffic would go up, site would go down. I had no idea what I was doing but eventually it started making sense. I would smile everytime I got a new-sign-up-email. It was awesome.

Mikael Joined me midway through 2011 to help build out several more features that were beyond my skill set and to help migrate the application to a better platform to as we were growing in popularity. He has been incredible.

What we have today is a unique app that allows CrossFitters from all over the world to log their WODs in less time than it took to do them. It allows them to follow and connect with other CrossFitters both on WODstack and in real life. It allows them to stay motivated by watching their progress and by encouragement from others. We’ve got an iPhone app close to completion and a team of people blogging. Just about 2,000 people have logged over 23,000 WODs and our numbers are growing everyday. This year we are averaging about 15 sign-ups a day and have added Nick Henderson (Social), Andria Kern (Corp Comm) and Billy Tobon (mobile) to our WODstack team.

We are so humbled that people want to connect here. We love the community and the fact that we can be part of supporting it like this is so fulfilling. The app is free to users and we aim to keep it that way. That is why we recently aligned with great some partners like Progenex to help us start to chip away at the cost of operation. We’ve got some ideas for some premium features in the future but nothing is set yet.

Come check us out. We’re having a blast.

CrossFit is my life and my passion. CrossFit is what allows me to wake up every morning and do what I love doing. However I never would have found CrossFit without my first love…wrestling. I started wrestling as a kid because I was the only one in my school that could make the 91lb weight division, and it was definitely not love at first sight. I spent years getting my butt whooped by my bigger and stronger teammates. I never would have believed 20 years later I would still have that competition bug, this time in the form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu is what brought me to CrossFit. (See What MMA Fighter Micheal Guymon has to say about Progenex)

I was searching for a local place to train and stumbled upon “Bruno Tostes BJJ” and was hooked. One of my teammates asked if I ever heard of this CrossFit stuff. I did what I have now seen hundreds of athletes do…I headed home went to CrossFit.com and spent the next 24 hours glued to my computer screen. It did not take long to turn in my old bodybuilding routine for this fun and badass CrossFit routine. Less than 6 months later the doors of Albany CrossFit were opened and my life would never be the same. The doors of Albany CrossFit have been open for nearly five years and while I have continued to train Jiu-Jitsu, I had put competitions on the back-burner.

About 6 weeks ago I was in bed on my IPad and saw that Siena College (in Albany) would be hosting a BJJ tournament. Without hesitation I knew I would be competing. I had no excuses. I had been training hard for the CrossFit Open, my BJJ training had been very consistent, and it was in my backyard. The only question was, “what weight class?” I pride myself on not weighing myself, I always tell all of our women not to do it, so I practice what I preach. However, that morning I woke up and was surprised to see 160lbs. staring at me. It was the heaviest I had ever been. I train hard and eat right, but at this point, have just been paleo with no measuring, and perhaps a bit too lenient in my dark chocolate intake. I had competed from 130-160lbs in the past, and immediately set my goal to make the 130lb weight class. Fully believing if you tell others your goals you are more likely to hit them, I told a bunch of our athletes of my intentions, I was not going to be held accountable.

Progenex as a Weight Loss Supplement

With 6 weeks to drop 30lbs. I had to get started immediately. My goal was to get to 140lbs a few days before and then cut the final 10lbs via water (do not try this at home). For the first two weeks I ate 100% strict paleo. This meant no dark chocolate, no honey roasted cashews, and very limited amounts of paleo “treats.” I was hitting CrossFit WODs 5 times per week, rolling on the mats 3 times per week, incorporated one day of swimming and one yoga class per week. I had one full rest day and one active recovery day. I truly believe what allowed me to train so hard and so often was making sure to get enough rest, cleaning up my nutrition, and daily doses of Progenex Recovery and More Muscle. After two weeks my morning weigh-ins were down to 150lbs. I was feeling great, performing great, and looking great.

I knew if I were going to drop this next 10lbs. I had to clean up my diet even more. Step one was absolutely no Paleo “treats” (sorry Steve’s Club). Step two was back to the “zone” and weighing and measuring. Step three was daily Intermittent Fasting (IF). I typically hit my morning WOD around 10am in my garage and this was immediately followed by my Progenex Recovery. On days when I would hit a second WOD or head to BJJ practice I would follow that with a More Muscle. Other than these two drinks I would IF for the remainder of the day. Most days were about 23 hour fasts with all of my food coming in one meal in a small window. Eating this way was a struggle at first, but it turned into a ritual and my body became used to it. I was eating 10 blocks of Protein, 3 blocks of Carbohydrates (in the form of broccoli) and 15 blocks of Fat. This may not sound like a lot of food for an entire day. But, when you sit down and look at it, it really is quite a bit. I changed my eating habits as well.

I ate each meal mindfully. I started with the broccoli, which really grows on you, I found myself looking forward to it. I ate this first because it really filled me up. I then ate my protein (typically hamburgers) and ate my cashews as dessert. All the while I would drink lots of water and my daily water goal was 2 gallons. With two weeks to go, I was consistently weighing in at 145lbs. every morning. I couldn’t increase my training, so I dropped my blocks a bit more. For the final two weeks I was eating about 6-8 blocks of protein, 2 blocks of carbohydrates (still broccoli), and 8-10 blocks of fat. I cut my sodium intake drastically. What was surprising is even though this was not a lot of food, not only was I feeling satisfied after my big meal, my strength and met-con ability stayed strong. I 100% attribute this to Progenex Post Workout Supplements.

Open WOD 12.2 was announced and I was hoping it was a joke. I had told everyone the only movement I didn’t want to see was a heavy snatch and their it was staring right into my eyes…time to man up. If burpees were better at a lighter body-weight, certainly snatches would not be. 135lbs. was now only about 5 lbs. from my body-weight. I had only hit “Isabel” once RX and it was just over 10 minutes. I now had to beat that time, and that was after 30 snatches at 75lbs. Once again I surprised myself. I started the 135lbs. at 3 minutes and knew it would be a challenge to finish in under 10 minutes…6 minutes and 54 seconds later rep 30 was locked out overhead. I didn’t get a chance to attempt 165lbs, but I could not have been happier with my performance. A huge PR on “Isabel” quite possibly my worst workout.

Progenex Supplements Bring Weight Loss Results

The last week of my weight cut was upon me, to say I was a bit cranky might be an understatement. For those of you that have never cut weight, it is such a mental challenge. While it was a struggle, I felt so strong physically and mentally, I just could not wait for the tournament to get here. The last day was the worst you can read all about it here. I woke up at 141 pounds and after 8 hours of sweating, I tipped the scales at 129.9 pounds. I had done it.

The training, the nutrition, the grind of practice, that’s the hard part, competition day is the fun part. Saturday, March 10th 2012 came and it was on! There were no nerves, just excitement. I knew I had given 100% to this competition and I wanted to prove it on the mats. Winning my first two matches decisively was a great start. I felt strong, confident, and my “gas tank” felt full. My finals match was tied after the first 5 minutes so it went to a two-minute overtime. My immediate reaction was damn…I’m tired, but I quickly re-framed my thinking to, this guy has not trained harder than me and I will not lose. I quickly took him down, secured a mount, and finished the two minutes ahead 6-0 for the First Place finish.

At 33 years old I never thought I would be at my athletic peak. I attribute it to CrossFit, Progenex Workout Supplements, dialed in nutrition, rest, smart training, and our amazing Albany CrossFit community. I am by far not the best athlete out there, but I believe that with the right tools anyone can challenge themselves physically and mentally to attain a goal that they have set for themselves.
