Are you a programmer? Do you consider yourself a good programmer?

The answers to the above questions are not important. Instead, If you do wish to be a good programmer all you need to do is to bookmark this webpage in your browser. Make this website your homepage. Don’t believe us? Sure, If I were you I won’t give a damn too. So, lets get straight to the point.

ProgrammingKid will deliver you a book at your doorstep every 30 days!

Learn with ProgrammingKid

Yes! We will buy a Programming Book for you and get the same dispatched to your home / workplace so that you can learn your favorite Programming Language at your pace, the way you want. So, essentially, you get the book for FREE. Nothing less. Nothing more. A FREE book delivered to you every month. How cool is that?

Past Giveaways – The Book Archive

Why such an initiative?

We believe knowledge should be free and accessible.Learning something new and doing something constructive using the new found knowledge needs passion and sincerity. This is one of its kind and probably the first of such initiatives. The idea behind the whole concept comes from the fact most of the learning in Universities is derived from the curriculum that students study ( The Indian Education System for example )

A typical collegiate will focus on the syllabus that the institute prescribes regardless of his or her personal interests. Again, we are taking an example of Indian Universities and institutes. The need to get “brilliant” grades/marks supersedes the desire to gain new knowledge. Thus, we look forward to attract knowledge seekers and entice them to let their passion rule free and learn what their heart desires.

The subject matter is related to Programming and therefore we would be giving away Books (Paperback) every 30 days to 1 of the participants who express their interest in our program.

How you can help us?

At this moment, please help us spread the word. Put your social media skills to use and lets attract more people. Just like you and me. Subscribe to our RSS Feed, follow us on Twitter or Subscribe to email updates.

The last time I wrote a post was like ages ago. Its been a while, lots of things have changed around me. First, the good parts :

I am now a Graduate in Computer Applications
I would be pursuing my Masters in Computer Applications

Things have evolved around me and as such, I think it’s fair enough to revamp ProgrammingKid. I have decided to do something about my less frequency of writing posts online and so in due course of time I would be bringing about some changes to the website.

As a Reader, You should look forward to …

… frequent articles.

… more programming related talk and jargon

… less news and product centric features

… more frequent giveaways and goodies

So, to start with. Sit back and enjoy the upcoming ride. We’ll be cruising over the Internet like an eagle in outer space very soon.

Note : There are some giveaways planned. Stay connected with us. Visit often and make the most of the goodies.

WordPress 3.0 is available for download. The most anticipated update from WordPress.org was released on 17 June 2010. We have upgraded our version from too from 2.9.2 to 3.0. All is looking good for the most part, however, due to the changes in WordPress 3.0 , it looks like all the users of Premium Theme – Thesis Theme have reported to be facing issues with the custom editor.

Thesis Error after upgrading to WordPress 3.0

Thesis Custom Editor page shows up a PHP Syntax error rendering the page broken.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function use_codepress() in
/ANY_OLD_DIRECTORY/public_html/wp-content/themes/thesis_XX/lib/admin/admin.php
on line XX

The guys at thesislab have put up a very elaborate article explaining the bug and its work around.

We were able to get out of this issue within few minutes. Hoping Chris Pearson would rectify this in the next version of Thesis.

WordPress is memory intensive and is a memory hog. The fact that it occupies lots of CPU resources and memory is nothing new. One of the best ways to optimize your WordPress website is by using compression.

What is Compression?

Compression can also be applied to websites just like files, folders are compressed in formats like .zip , .rar etc. In websites, HTTP compression, otherwise known as content encoding, is a publicly defined way to compress textual content transferred from web servers to browsers. HTTP compression uses public domain compression algorithms, like gzip and compress, to compress XHTML, JavaScript, CSS, and other text files at the server.

Most of my traffic comes from modern browsers, and quite frankly, most of my users are fairly tech-savvy. Google and Yahoo use gZip compression on their websites.

How to use GZip Compression in WordPress

Compression reduces response times by reducing the size of the HTTP response. Gzip is the most popular and effective compression method currently available and generally reduces the response size by about 70%. Approximately 90% of today’s Internet traffic travels through browsers that claim to support gzip.

If you want to take advantage of GZIP compression ( and we do recommend this ), then you WILL need an .htaccess file to accomplish that part. GZIP compression is something that should really be enabled at the Apache level or inside your php.ini file. GZIP compression can be used for things like JavaScript and CSS files as well, so why bother turning it on for only WordPress generated pages when you can enable GZIP at the server level and cover all the bases.

If your installation of Apache does not have
mod_deflate
installed. You can also enable GZIP compression using PHP configuration alone. In your php.ini file, you can simply add the following line anywhere:
zlib.output_compression = on

Easiest Way to Enable GZip in WordPress

If you want to enable GZIP, in your WordPress installation directory put the following few lines in the .htaccess file and that is all there is to it. GZIP is now enabled!

Download the Code here .

How to Check is GZip is working for your Website?

You can check if GZip is enabled on your WordPress using the a Free online tool at GZip Test. You can perform a GZip Compression Test using the Free online tool and see the results.

By using GZip Compression, we have been able to achieve around 76% compression.

We noticed considerable improvement in our Page load times after enabling the GZip compression. How about you?

Facebook seems to have caught attention of yet another self replicating application which is spreading itself by Spamming your friend’s wall posts.

Here is a screenshot of how it looks like :

I have been noticing this link being posted on my wall posts and aswell as walls of my friends. This is not a video as it looks like. Its an application in disguise of a video. On clicking, you would be taken to application access page.

How to prevent yourself from this SPAM attack

Hopefully, Facebook will remove this application and would take corrective actions against this application. Till then, users are requested NOT to click any link and if possible, should disable Wall posts being posted on your wall by friends. If that sounds extreme then yes it is. However, I would not like my Friend list to get SPAMMED with this ridiculous application.

Please do not give access to this application. There is no video to be seen. [Honest]

ProgrammingKid.com has underdone a design overhaul. Although most of our readers were happy with the previous design, we decided to experiment and give a fresh look to the website. With the new design in place, we hope our readers will be able to navigate more effectively as we have tried to reduce clutter and make links more accessible.

Why the redesign?

In order to address some issues, we decided to make changes to the layout. Some of the problems we hope to address were :

Site Navigation

Cluttered look due to multiple thumbnails

Post excerpts occupying unnecessary space on the home page

Inaccessible old posts

Higher Page load times compared to average website

Increasing bounce rates

The NEW Design at a glance

We hope the the redesign of ProgrammingKid.com solves the above problems to a large extent. However, It remains to be seen how well do the users/visitors respond to the new design. We would be keeping a track on our Analytics and statistics for changes in bounce rate, average time on page and average page views per visitor.

Note : ProgrammingKid uses DIY Thesis. Related Read : The Dummies guide to Thesis Customization.

Header

We changed our logo to a combination of RED and DARK GREY to start with. Keeping the new logo colours in mind we matched the navigation bars to the same colours. The Above navigation bar was kept RED while the below one was kept DARK GREY.

Revised Categories

In order to reduce the bounce rate and to increase relevancy of the content, we rearranged our categories in the Navigation Bars and move programming related categories under a main subhead – Programming instead of being scattered around like C, C++, Java etc

New content Layout and Placement

The thumbnails were removed from all the post excerpts to reduce clutter and reduce page load times. Also, we further used hand-crafted excerpts of no more than 20 words so that the information is conveyed using the least possible words. This we believe would significantly reduce vertical scrolling and would make room for more posts to be displayed on the home page.

After the Content Changes

In order to engage the visitor, we added 10 random posts after the post/page content. This we hope would help the visitors to access old posts which have got buried due to the recent articles. Further, we also replaced the Self-Sponsor banners from the sidebar this new position to reduce clutter from the sidebar.

No more Footer Columns

We decided to do away with the Footer Columns toreduce page load times and to decrease unnecessary vertical scroll.

Tabbed Accordion Widgets

We made some minor visual changes to the Sidebar Widgets. In addition, we added an accordion to hold various previously published posts in different subheads to give the visitors a sneek peak into the wonderful content at ProgrammingKid. In order to reduce space, we used accordion style tabs and made this into one single widget.

Result

The result we hope is a simpler, cleaner and more navigation friendly design that would hopefully be able to engage a lot more visitors.

The untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 3G 3.1.3 and iPod Touch 3G 3.1.3 has arrived. After much anticipation, the new tool makes jailbreaking of iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 3G possible. Earlier, the new 3.1.3 firmware update by Apple had disabled all jailbreaks on the new 3G devices.

Although, ProgrammingKid had brought the Downgrade Guide from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 for all users who had accidentally upgraded to 3.1.3. The jailbreak from BlackRaIn by Gehot was tethered.

What is untethered Jailbreak?

If you have one of the newer iPod touch 3rd-gen, or iPod touch 2G (2nd-gen), which came with iPhone OS 3.1.3 as pre-installed. If you have ever tried jailbreaking this model, you would know how annoying it is to greet with that “Connect to iTunes” screen every time you restart it. This is because it was jailbroken using tethered jailbreak method.

But now with Spirit, you can jailbreak your device as untethered, which effectively means that you are no longer required to re-jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch every time you restart it.

Features of Spirit for Jailbreaking iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 3G

According to the developer of Spirit,

Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the latest firmwares.

Spirit is not a carrier unlock.

If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit. Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version.)

We will show you how to do a untethered jailbreak of your iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 3G running on firmware 3.1.3

How to Jailbreak iPod Touch 3.1.3 and iPhone 3.1.3

Step 1

Download and install the latest version of iTunes from Apple.com

Download Spirit for your Operating System. This tool does all the magic required to jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch.

Download Spirit for Windows
Download Spirit for OS X

Step 2

You will need to be on the official iPhone 3.1.2, or iPhone 3.1.3 firmware on your iPhone

Download iPhone / iPod Touch Firmware from here.

Step 3

Connect iPhone with your computer, Run “Spirit” and then Click on “Jailbreak”:

Spirit for iPhone 3GS

Note for Windows 7/Vista Users (OS X users should skip to Step 5): Change the “Compatibility mode” to “Windows 98 / Windows Me” by right clicking on “Spirit.exe”, and then click on “Properties”. This can be seen in the screenshot below.

Also check: “Run this program as an administrator” option on the same window.

Step 4

Let the app do its thing and wait for the app to show “Jailbreak Complete!” message. At this point, wait for the iPhone to automatically reboot.

Step 5

Voila! You should now have a fully jailbroken iPhone 3G/3GS running on firmware 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 – Untethered !
