My two cents on the 1 password Dropbox issue

It offers no compromises in functionality and offers what some would consider an increase in security for shared-vault users over the 'legacy' Dropbox model discussed herein. It uses a cloud storage service other than Dropbox, but that's no more a dealbreaker than Dropbox itself would be. So with 1Password having already implemented both "the new secure mode" (paid) and "a legacy mode for backwards compatibility" (dropbox), they clearly have already accepted the additional maintenance burden of the increased security requirements of their 'new' method. Please identify the evidence you see supporting your claim that it is impossible, in light of their words and actions to the contrary.

Obviously, the reason they don't want to work on this is because it competes with their paid product. Simple as that I think.

If we want to be treated as professionals, we have to start acting like professionals. This means we do not always bow down to the "business". If there is something that is not "right", we at least let the "business" know and give them options so they can make a choice.

Like a plumber or a surgeon, we need to listen to our customer but at the end of the day whether to carry out a procedure is up to us. As we have seen in the VW case, the management will readily throw us under the bus anyway. Why would we want to lie down in front of the bus if we know the bus will run us over?

State of the web

didn't recognize. Where does that put my mental model of the web in

disturbing happening: my web browsing has coalesced into a small

I have to confess that I regularly find myself thinking that what I do is correct and righteous and all those things. I start with that assumption and wrap everything else around that idea and if an observation doesn't that assumption then I start questioning the observation.

This results in a distorted view of reality. What I do is always right. A more microscopic way of saying “Our Country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but right or wrong, our country!”

It is similar to tribalism on a minute scale. In the grand scheme of things, we are so inconsequential that rightness and wrongness doesn't really matter to the universe. However, it matters to us. In our context, what we do and what we think are massively important.

The first thing I need to do is be aware that this happens. Then I can acknowledge it, be on the lookout for it, and take steps to correct it.

I will tell you about the product but first, lets get a few administrative items out of the way.

Alright, with those important points out of the way, lets jump into the discussion. The topic today is the artificial sweet taste you will love. Now, don't get me wrong. A natural sweet sense is not bad. Of course, if you are a child, you want the natural care and love from your family. Not everything in life needs to be natural though. Arsenic is natural as nature comes and you don't want that.

Therefore, with great pride I can tell you that the taste of my [redacted] Whey Protein Natural Banana flavor is defiantly not natural. It is an artificial flavoring and an artificially sweet taste. Let me tell you why that is a good thing.

The whole exercise is a matter of taste so of course your mileage may vary.

In my opinion, I like the (takes a swirl) thick consistency and artificially delightful bubble gum pop sweetness of the protein shake.

That is the gist of my argument. I like it. I have no other argument.

The free market is a lie

Imagine you're a business process with some inputs and some outputs. You would want a very healthy competition in the market that supplies your input so you can get the best prices on your input. Meanwhile, you want the maximum possible margin for your outputs. Now, repeat this thought experiment throughout the entire supply chain and you will realize that competition and a free market is not a natural state of the economy. By natural, I mean the state toward which we would gravitate in the absence of outside forces. This is where regulation comes in. Because we realize that we cannot have perfect competition and a free market, we regulate. People will say "oh, get rid of all regulation" but we can't do that for every single business process in our entire economy at the same time. Getting rid of regulations in a few business processes is an inherently biased action. The free market is a lie.

I'll be upfront about something. I don't know anything. Any opinion I have is based on an incomplete model of the world I live in and as such most likely flawed. That being said, I believe writing down my thoughts helps me solidify my thoughts so here I go:

My thoughts on "form follows function" is to say that form and function go hand in hand. It was never the intention to say that any form is bad form but that the form should not get in the way of function. My understanding of form follows function is that the function is half step ahead of form and should shape form not the other way round. Of course, in a stateful world, we often face a chicken and egg problem. How did our beliefs influence church architecture over the centuries? How much of our church architecture influenced our beliefs over the centuries? We could ask the same about any tool and any behavior. How did the advent of git influence software programming? How did the way we do software programming influence the development of git?

You could say this is a wishy-washy answer or a non-answer but that's all I have at the moment.
