Spring-cleaning! It’s time go through this last year’s accumulation of things. Have you kept every piece of clothing that you’ve bought in the last five years? Has your collection of books begun to weigh down the shelf? Who else could use and enjoy these things? To you it has become clutter. But to another it’s exactly what he needs.

Here are three tips to help you find another man’s treasure while you’re sorting through your things:

The 6-Month Rule

If you haven’t used it recently, you won’t use it anytime soon. If you haven’t worn those pants or shirt in the past six months, you may not wear them in the next six months. A few exceptions to this rule is things that are used yearly—so don’t give up your backyard barbeque you use every summer. Things that you use on a regular basis—cooking utensils, your favorite jewelry, that over-read book—should be kept.

Limited Space

Consider how much space you have to keep your things. If you have a small house or apartment (and you don’t plan on moving anytime soon), you may want to consider creating a little more space, or saving money by getting a smaller storage unit. None of the extra furniture stuffing your garage or storage unit will see the light of day until at least 5 years from now. Wouldn’t it be better used by someone who needs it more than you do?

What is Significant?

Most of us have the typical pack-rat rationalizations. “Oh! But my aunt gave me this—I couldn’t possibly give it away,” we tell ourselves. But the fact is, that the only things you should be holding on to is what your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren would appreciate. Your grandmother’s formal jewelry and your grandfather’s old gun are certainly worth keeping. The old baby clothes could go—but perhaps your daughter would like to keep her old baptismal dress. The rest—that old bike, the old chest of drawers, the old toys—could go to those who have little.

How to Give it Away

Once you’ve gathered everything, there are several options to help you give away your things to those who need it.

Not only do your things go to people who need it, but they also generate money for other causes.

The Curb is surprisingly a great place for your things to be given away quickly. The only downside to this is that you may be just giving your things to opportunists, not necessarily to those who need it.

Your Friends and Neighbors surely need an item or two. Give your old coffee table to your newlywed friends, or give away your toddler’s newborn clothes to your pregnant friend.

Whatever you give away or to whomever you give, it doesn’t matter. You will be benefitted as well. You will not only have more space, but you will gain that strange gratification for helping someone in need. Take the opportunity during your spring-cleaning to let your extra things become another man’s treasure.

Fact: More than one acre of rainforest is lost every second.

Deforestation is one of the biggest ecological problems the earth is facing today. Forests are cut down for many reasons, but most of them are related to money or people’s needs to provide for their families. Often many small farmers will each clear a few acres for timber, charcoal and agricultural needs.

THREE (OUT OF MANY) NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF DEFORESTATION

1) Loss of habitat for millions of species – Over 70% of animals and plants live in forests. Loss of trees deprives the forest of its canopy, which blocks the sun’s rays during the day and holds the heat at night. Cutting trees will lead to more extreme temperature swings that can be harmful to plants and animals.

2) Barren deserts – trees can help perpetuate the water cycle by returning water vapor back in to the atmosphere. Without trees most of these lands will quickly become barren deserts.

3) Climate change – trees play a critical role in absorbing the greenhouse gases that fuel global warming.

Save the Earth

As we approach Earth Day (April 22nd), we ask that you partner with us to make a tangible difference by how you purchase your everyday products. Every time you purchase a Project 7 Save the Earth product you help us plant a tree where they’re needed the most. Save the Earth products (gum, mints and 100% rPET bottled water) are available at national retailers.

OUR IMPACT

So far, with your help, through Save the Earth purchases, we have been able to plant 3,011,796 trees, and we’re just getting started. We have partnered with great non-profit organizations such as Trees, Water & People and Plant With Purpose to plant the trees in Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador. Furthermore, most of the trees planted are fruit trees (avocados, citrus and coffee). Beyond the obvious positive ecological effects of planting these trees, the local communities can use the fruits as a food source and for trading purposes.

We recently visited Haiti to plant some of the trees. Check out the video here.

Guest Post by Grant Young (@YoungMrYoung). Visit Grant’s blog at closedlips.com.

I was just thinking about how privileged we are in America. Seriously, I think we get so consumed with self that we forget someone is worse off than you and that everyone needs encouragement. I don’t mean that we should not be upset when we go through difficulty. Here’s what I mean.

I was driving to work and only had a small lunch and was mentally overwhelmed with bills and the realization that I would have to do some major grocery shopping that day. I was pretty much in the “woe-is-me-if-only-I-had-a-better-job” phase that when I stopped at the red light I totally ignored the homeless guy next to me. I’m sure he would have appreciated the lunch I considered as “too small.”

After I got over myself and started the “should-I-give-him-my-food” debate my light turned and I had to start driving. I got to work and felt like such a jerk. My self-centered moment led me to ignore someone who was in a worse situation than me.

How often does that happen? I have a feeling I’m not the only person who has gone through a similar situation. Random acts of kindness can make someone’s day because they don’t expect it! The reason they don’t expect it is because our culture is too focused on themselves to touch the lives of someone else. Unfortunately, you can see this throughout social media.

SIDE NOTE: I actually took some time to stare at my mini-feed to see that there are more likes, shares and comments on the fake Harlem Shake or cat pictures than positive causes.

I just completed a school project about sex trafficking within the United States. I had no idea how prevalent that issue is in America! I also just read about Sub-Saharan African and their children not being able to go to school, the extreme poverty rates and the prevalent AIDS epidemic in that area.

The point I’m trying to make is that tomorrow is not promised to anyone. While we’re here lets touch hearts and impact the culture to make us less selfish individuals. Social media is an outlet that makes sharing information ridiculously simple. We can shed light on the social ills of the world and help a cause if we get over ourselves just like I could’ve helped that homeless man.

I know we are a generous nation that has unlimited potential. Use your influence for good and let’s spread the word on the causes that are fighting to make a positive impact.

1. Pack care packages and leave them in your car

The basic things we take for granted are sometimes the most essential to a homeless person. Pack up a few things in a bag and leave them in your car. You never know when you’ll come across someone who will need help. Here are a few things to include in your care package.

-Tooth brush/tooth paste
-Deodorant
-Shaving cream/razors
-Granola bars
-Gift Cards
-Socks
-Underwear
-Prepaid telephone cards

2. Making sandwiches

Get together with your friends to make sandwiches and pack them in individual zip lock bags and drive around town and hand them out to those in need.

3. Lead Games for homeless children

Contact your local homeless shelters to find one that would allow you and your friends to come and play a game with the children that they serve. Visit Do Something to get great ideas on some of the games you can play with the kids.

4. Hold a blanket drive

Before holding a blanket drive visit the homeless shelter directory to find a local shelter and contact them to make sure they accept blanket donations. In order to make this a successful event, be sure to utilize all of your connections. Set a date and location for the blanket drive and create a Facebook event to invite everyone you know. Contact the local churches, schools and businesses to help you spread the word.

You can help the homeless simply by changing the brand of gum you chew. Telling your friends about House the Homeless gum is one simple way to make a difference. We are all busy and sometimes we feel like if we are not out there doing stuff, we can’t make a difference. That’s where Project 7 comes in. House the Homeless gum helps provide shelter for those in need. Currently, House gum is available at all 7 Eleven stores across America. So far, with your help, Project 7 has provided 27,925 days of shelter.

Every month, the Project 7 team spends some time volunteering"

Every month, the Project 7 team spends some time volunteering at a local charity. This month, we had the pleasure of volunteering along side of the hardworking team at OC Rescue Mission, an organization that provides food, clothes, shelter, and healing. Each day, OC Rescue Mission provides over 4,000 meals for its nearly 200 ‘students’ who live on the Costa Mesa campus, along with other locations in Santa Ana and Fullerton.

We had a blast volunteering at the Costa Mesa campus last week. Here are some pictures.

Up to date, Teach them Well products have provided 16,540"

Up to date, Teach them Well products have provided 16,540 weeks of education for children in need. That’s incredible! To put this in perspective we would like to introduce you to one of our Teach Them Well partners who has been doing amazing work since 1993 through fighting poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa by educating girls and empowering young women to become leaders of change. Everybody meet Camfed! Created and administered in partnership with poor rural communities in Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, Camfed’s education programs have benefitted over 1.9 million children.

Contributions from Project 7’s Teach Them Well program go towards Camfed’s Safety Net Fund, which ensures that children from the poorest families do not drop out of primary school due to the inability to meet school-going costs. The Safety Net Fund helps provide these most disadvantaged children with school supplies, books, uniforms and other items necessary for them to attend school.

Gertrude (pictured), a student from Samfya District, Zambia, is one girl benefiting from the Safety Net Fund. Gertrude, whose mother died when she was quite young, lives with her father. Gertrude’s father cannot afford the cost of her school needs, putting her at risk of dropping out. Camfed helped provide Gertrude with a new school uniform, books, pens and pencils. Now Gertrude can concentrate on her studies worry-free and focus on achieving her goal of becoming a nurse.

It was the fall of 2009 and we had just"

It was the fall of 2009 and we had just landed in Boston for our first tradeshow to debut Project 7 to the marketplace. We were headed to the exposition hall to build our booth for the very first time and my phone rang. I can remember the conversation like it was yesterday. On the other end of the line was a guy by the name of Patrick Burns. He was from my old stomping grounds in Amarillo Texas and he had heard about Project 7 through some mutual friends telling him about it.

He was the project manager of a coffee shop and bookstore that my old church, Trinity Fellowship was adding to their building. He thought it would be great if they could buy a pallet (80 cases) of our water for the coffee shop as the water they served. I said that is awesome and lets find a way to make it happen when I get back from the tradeshow.

I hung up the phone and was thankful but was already thinking about the tradeshow the next day. I had visions of grandeur, of retailers and distributors around the country getting so excited about our giving brand of products that we’d be taking orders left and right. Fast-forward 3 days when the show was over and here are the cliff notes

We didn’t take one order at that show. That’s right, not one order. We pitched our company and products for 3 days straight from dusk until dawn to everybody that walked by our booth and when the show closed we walked home with no orders.

I’d like to tell you I wasn’t discouraged and that I knew it was just our first show and that we were getting the word out about our company. Instead I was discouraged and wondered if the market would ever respond positively to our idea.

When I got back to Dallas and I was sulking in my sorrows the phone rang again; it was Patrick following up. In my self-pity I had completely lost sight of the fact that I got my first order before the tradeshow had even started. Luckily he’s a good guy to work with that believed in a social business model and the order was placed

Fast forward four years and a lot has changed and since then Patrick became his own entrepreneur along with his wife Krystal and they opened a specialty coffee shop called Palace Coffee in Canyon, Texas. While visiting family in Amarillo for Thanksgiving I got to go by his shop and say hi and snap this picture…. He’s still a Project 7 customer today through his coffee shop and that got me thinking this Thanksgiving Day.

In just a couple of months, Project 7 will cross the 20,000 retailers mark of stores that carry Project 7 products every day across our great nation. There are some pretty well known names in that roster of partners that we are thankful to have but we’ll never forget customer #1.

That little spark of an order helped us get started. It’s through your support at retailers over the years that together we’ve been able to do a lot of good in our 7 areas of need. But it may have never happened if I’d have given up after that first tradeshow and forgotten to take care of that first customer opportunity.

So if you’re out there today and you’re discouraged like I was after our tradeshow, take inventory of the things you may have overlooked; steward them and give thanks. Don’t miss a really great first chapter being written in your story while you’re daydreaming about the sequel. In time. In time.

Happy Thanksgiving Friends of Project 7

Tyler Merrick
