Pretty Things Tonight @ Muleh.

Paula Mendoza is a local designer who makes some of the most stunningly sophisticated & gorgeous jewelry I’ve seen. The first time I came across it was on one of the guests at a women’s luncheon to welcome Elizabeth Stratman, the new PR Director for Saks in Chevy Chase, and it (and she) was the talk of the lunch. Tonight, Paula will be on hand to show off the newest additions to her line, which she calls ???statement pieces that can be worn with any outfit, that add a great romantic touch and a little bit of excitement to the DC woman???s wardrobe.???

Since it’s at Muleh, you can assume two things: that it’s not cheap, and that upon seeing it, you’ll feel as it you’ve found the jewelry equivalent of the perfect lover.

FW: We Have Another One

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

DSC_0032.JPG

Soon Washington will have another, yes another, fashion/social scene/party/lifestyle glossy. This time, the Washington Post franchise getting in the game. The Washington City Paper seems to have broken the news (with obligatory eye-rolling, of course) for FW (Fashion Washington). While the distribution model is a little disappointing, The Post isn’t ripping off The Examiner exclusively at all; the paper seems to be considering all of the models its competition uses - select mailings and select retail drops (you can pick up DC Magazine at Muleh on 14th Street and Capitol File at Erwin Gomez in Georgetown).

More on all of this later because I’m running out, but what do you guys think? Does Washington need another glossy? Could The Post fill an important editorial gap? Is this just a way to get in on a new advertising stream? Do you think they’ll get really conceptual and creative with it, like the New York Times’ Style mags?

In any case, I can’t wait to get my hands on it. Somehow.

Rock the Boat!

I ended up at a "Yacht Rock" dance party at St. Ex on Wednesday night. So fun to see a happy crowd full of costumes and moustaches letting loose and dancing til the wee-est of hours of a school night.

Happy Feet.

Thursday, July 17, 2008

Last night I attended a viewing of the TOMS shoes documentary “For Tomorrow,” a moving (yep, I cried) 35-minute movie chronicling their first shoe drop in Argentina in 2006 (there’s a short trailer and a blurb on the company here). Founder Blake Mycoskie, who lost by a sliver on The Amazing Race, came up with the idea while visiting villages in Argentina. For every pair he sells, he gives a pair to a child who needs shoes.

I learned something shocking while watching the film: 40% of the world’s people don’t have shoes to protect them from cuts and life-threatening illness. It really puts things into perspective.

I’m partial to the coral and navy canvas versions, and yay, they carry my size, 9.5!

One for the Boys!

Thursday, July 17, 2008

DSC_0032.JPG

My friend and fellow Washingtonian Best-Dressed-lister Ebong Eka is launching a line of men’s clothing, and there’s a benefit show on August 5. The idea is customized ready-to-wear. Ebong (awesome name) is a CPA full-time but has been designing off and on since around 2005. The line emphasizes suits in luxurious fabrics and Italian workmanship in addition to shirts and pants, all customized for fit and preference.

Which means they will FIT. No more (well, at least less) boxy, ill-fitting suits. yaaay!

Suits will range from $1000-$1500, shirts will be $200-$250, and pants will be $350.

I’m helping one of the models with his fit and walk this weekend. I have my opinions, as you might guess.

Get tickets here!
