The DiMAS shortlists have been announced

The shortlists for The DiMAS - the local awards to recognise talent and hardwork within the digital sector - have been announced. The People’s Choice award is the only one that can be voted on, all others are carefully decided by the judging panel and will be announced live on the 27th of November.

Project Brighton Job Board

I started Brighton digital jobs on Twitter a few months back and it has gained a nice li’l following. This basically pulls in jobs from various online spaces, such as Wired Sussex, Chinwag and other company websites that have a dedicated RSS feed for jobs. (Though I have to say this is surprisngly low for the amount of digital companies in Brighton - if you know of any do let me know!).

For a while I brought together the same feed online and whilst I wanted to do a proper job board for a while I didn’t feel it was the right time, until of course now! My main reasoning behind this is that the main source of jobs in Brighton is Wired Sussex and the BNM list. Both are great, but also have barriers (such as money or people not wanting to sign up to a mailing list - to post or read).

The purpose of the Project Brighton Job Board is to make it easier to find people to work with. I think this is especially important for Brighton and the freelance and small business community where there is a need to find people on a less formal basis.

So, say hello to the Project Brighton Job Board. It’s here to stay. It’s free.

Elgg International Conference coming to Brighton in December

Elgg is an open source social networking application that has gone through a massive transformation in recent months. The good news is that not only did they recently launch a brand new and completely rewritten version of their social networking app (which is well worth a look), but they are bringing their international conference to good ole Brighton.

Huffduffing digital Brighton

Jeremy Keith recently launched a new web app called Huffduffer that nicely brings podcasts together into your very own feed.

I think it’s really nifty. The process is similar to booking marking a site with the likes of delicious. The Huffduffer site explains it like this:

Find links to audio files on the Web.

Huffduff the links—add them to your podcast.

Subscribe to podcasts of other found sounds.

I was a bit confused when I first read this, but found that replacing the term Huffduff with ‘bookmark’ or ‘tag’ and it all became much clearer for me in Rosie Land (!). If you bookmark something in delicious you can get an RSS feed for your account or on specific chosen tags or keywords. Huffduffer is similar, but for podcasts.

The idea is that not only do you create your own podcast of potentially varying sources, but it can also be used as a way to discover new podcasts.

I put it to the test and have created a Project Brighton Huffduffer profile where I have brought together podcasts related to digital Brighton. It gets the thumbs up from me and it may even encourage me to create my own podcasts…one day!

So the < head > conference is over for this year, I suspect much to the relief of Aral!

However, being < head >, it’s not really over as all the talks are available (or will be soon). A big congrats to Aral and Team < head > for pulling off such a big challenge!

So let’s all say a big thank-you to Anthony Johnston of Antix Software for developing CV Builder. This natty application breaks CV content into chunks – making the process of building and updating a CV remarkably simple.

CV Builder hosts your CV so you can avoid the confusion of multiple CVs floating around your hard drive. Anthony is currently building a Facebook version of his app and a version that connects to LinkedIn.
