Background: The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) invites applications for the position of Project Manager - Yam Improvement for Income and Food Security in West Africa (YIIFSWA) project.
IITA is an international non-profit research-for-development (R4D) organization created in 1967, governed by a Board of Trustees, and supported primarily by the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Our R4D is anchored on the development needs of sub-Saharan Africa. We develop agricultural solutions with our partners to tackle hunger and poverty by reducing producer and consumer risks, enhancing crop quality and productivity, and generating wealth from agriculture. We have more than 100 internationally recruited scientists from about 35 countries and 900 nationally recruited staff based in various stations across Africa. The Project Manager will work in close collaboration with the Objective leaders (agronomic, breeder, plant health and social scientists) and country managers, in addition to national and international partners, to efficiently coordinate and monitor project activities and take functional guidance from, and report to the IITA R4D Director-West Africa.
Position/Responsibilities

Provide effective and efficient management, guidance, cohesion, accountability, and profile to the project.
Coordinate an inter-disciplinary, international and culturally diverse project team; and financial assets in concordance with the Terms of Reference of the project and organizational procedures.
Be the main contact for communications with donor and administrative divisions of participating organizations.
Develop project implementation, monitoring, delivery and communication plans together with the Coordinators for Project Objectives and cross cutting activities (Gender; Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning; and Communication), as well as the Task Leaders,
Apply best practices and tools for project management, monitoring progress and budget, procurements, data reposition and troubleshooting.
Manage contracts between IITA and project partners.
Serve as liaison person between IITA and project partners and ensure budget management and payments as per the contracts.
Proactively involve in team building, strengthening and building partnerships.
Prepare and submit technical, financial and other documents to IITA administration, donor and stakeholders.
Organize annual project planning and review meetings, and technical workshops outlined in the project.
Implement recommendations of the project Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).
Ensure effective communication within the project team, identify shortfalls and devise contingency plans.
Represent the project at scientific and other regional meetings.
As the project manager for Nigeria, coordinate all the in-country project activities including ensuring collaboration between various partners and stakeholders, and review of project progress.
Prepare project performance report for Project Director and TAC.

Educational Qualifications
The candidate should have a PhD degree in plant or agricultural sciences from a recognized university.
Core Competencies:

At least 10 years of experience in agriculture R&D and project management.
Strong project and team management experience (demonstrated success in managing at least two multi-country agricultural projects of significant duration)
Working experience / exposure to international organizations and interdisciplinary agriculture research.
Familiarity with agriculture and farming systems in West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Ghana. Working experience with yam (Dioscorea spp.) is desirable.
Working experience in agribusiness management with Value Chain approach
Proficiency in use of computers, database management software, internet-based tools and other electronic communication tools
Fluency in oral and written English; working knowledge of French would be an asset
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Duty station: IITA-Ibadan, Nigeria but involves substantial time outside duty station, domestic and international travel.

Can I Earn PDUs for Writing Project Management Articles?

Yes you can! Ever since the Project Management Institute (PMI) published the new Category and Structure for Professional Development Units (PDUs) in March of 2011, earning PDUs has become much easier. This ease is especially visible in Category D “Creating New Project Management Knowledge”: Every hour that you spend creating and / or presenting new project management knowledge counts as 1 PDU.

This means that if you decide to write a project management related article and you invest 3 hours in writing it then you have just earned 3 PDUs. (Please note that there is a maximum of 45 PDUs that you can earn in Categories D, E and F, therefore these 3 hours would count toward that maximum).

Are you thinking that this way of earning PDUs isn’t for you because you have nothing to write about? Think again! Let me give you three simple ideas:

One: Write a white paper about your last project. Describe what and how you managed it, focusing on project management best practices.

Two: There isn’t one project meeting that I have attended where I don’t learn something new about being a PM. Think back to your last 3 meetings and describe what you have learned.

Three: Discuss a particularly difficult area on your project with one of your colleagues at work and then write an article about what the problem is and how you decided to do to solve it. And of course in one month down the road you can write another article describing how well / badly your actions worked.

But beware... there are some topics that won’t count toward earning you Professional Development Units. For example an article that talks about the latest and greatest features of a project management software won’t earn you any PDUs. Similarly, articles on how to prepare for the PMP exam or articles on earning PDUs like the one you are reading right now don’t count either. These three topics don’t count, because any article written about them isn’t creating new knowledge - it is just describes a “product”. So be safe and write about what you learned in your daily work as a PM managing your projects.

Once you have your first article completed you need to publish it. But where?

From my past discussions with PMI I have learned that they do not have a list of specific publication channels where you must publish. The important point to keep in mind is that the article must discuss project management topics and that it is published where other project managers are likely to find it.

Here are some ideas for where you could publish your PM articles:

Send your article to your local PMI chapter for inclusion in their newsletter. PMI chapter newsletters usually welcome contributions from guest authors.
Start your own blog at any of the free online blogging platforms. Having your own blog gives you credibility as a PM and it will also encourage you to write more and earn more PDUs.
If you are not ready to start your own blog, then simply contact another blogger and ask her/him if they might be interested in publishing your article on their website as a guest blogger.
Publish it on a Project Management Community website like Gantthead or The International Community for PMs.
Send the article to the publishers of one of the many online PM newsletters for inclusion in the upcoming issue.
Create an account at an article directory website like Ezinearticles and publish the article here.

Also remember to always keep records of your articles, so that you can show to PMI during an audit that you truly deserve to have earned these PDUs. As a best practice you should keep a copy of your original article, print out a screen shot of the website where your article was published and keep a copy of the magazine where your article was printed.

In my view, every project manager has something to say and share with others in our worldwide community. So pick up that pen... I mean keyboard… and start writing.

THE EFFECT OF ABANDONED PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES BY SUCCESSIVE GOVERNMENTS ON THE NATION’S ECONOMY.

Since the attainment of independence, Nigeria has witnessed successive governments both military and civilian. Each of the government always comes up with new programmes and projects for the betterment of the people. Surprisingly, many of the laudable programmes and projects are often abandoned by successive governments both at the Federal and State levels. They ostensibly do so because they don’t want to associate themselves with projects and programmes embarked upon by their predecessors. In other words, they do not want their predecessors to take credit for the success of these programmes.

This abandonment is done without taking into cognizance the huge amount of public funds involved in initiating such projects and programmes. These abandoned projects cut across all sectors including Health, Education and Roads. Cases abound where some administrators on assumption of office change every house hold item in their residential quarters because they do not want to share what their predecessors used. Some even pull down the entire building and build new ones.

The point is that, as soon as these programmes and projects are abandoned, new ones are initiated only to be abandoned again by yet another successive government. And so, the abandonment continues while the nation’s resources continue to be wasted. In the developed World, those who take over from previous government are always happy to use items used by the founding fathers of such countries several years back. Projects and Programmes as well as policies there are sustained. They do so because they place the interest of the people and their nation’s above all other considerations.

This sustainable policy has yielded positive results as these countries have moved from developing to developed world. So, for Nigeria to take its rightful position in the committee of nation, a concrete and decisive step must be taken to ensure the sustainability of government programmes, policies and projects. The National Assembly should come up with legislation to compel successive government to continue with programmes and projects initiated by their predecessors. This will not only save our resources but will also enable the government to ensure optimum use of scarce recourses for other new projects.

The policy of always starting afresh can not lead the country to the promised land. Time has come for political office holders to emulate the sterling qualities of the founding fathers of the nation. Elected officials should know that they are holding offices in trust for those who elected them and therefore place the interest of the people above their personal interest.

The organised labour civil society, non governmental organizations, students unions and other concerned Nigerians should rise up and speak when ever decisions affecting the interest of the people and the nation are taken. With sustainability of positive programmes, policies and projects, and cooperation by all Nigerians, the country will be a shining example not only in Africa but also in the whole world

your calendar.

You also have an adapted style of communication, this means how we communicate when
we are upset or under pressure or during a conflict.

It is important to understand your natural approach/style and your adapted approach.

Then you can begin to understand the styles of others and how/when your styles work
with others or not.

There is a lot to consider. And the most important question; is your style working
for you?

Step One: Assess where you have been?So far in your career what have you been able to accomplish?Has your attitude been drawing you back on your career path?Go down memory lane to draw these precious insights.Assess your personal S.W.O.T:Strengths,Opportunities,Weakness and Threats.

Step Two: What is your Big Picture.What path will you like to tread in re-purposing your career? Here list want your main purpose is for your career,list what career goals you are passionate about.

Is it joining more networking groups both in your location and international?is it joining more networks online via Linkedin, twitter,Facebook etc
Is it learning a new skill or acquiring a new degree?
Is it writing a new book,publishing podcast
Is changing your location to where the jobs are at?

List all these paths in a mind map to enable you categorize your paths better

Step Three:Set your goals make sure it is S.M.A.R.T-Specific,Measurable,Achievable,Realistic and Time bound.To set your goals draw up a pictorial of where you will like to be in lets say the next 90 days,6 months,1 year,5 years 10 years as the case may be.Successful people think in pictures once you have foresight about where you will like to be.Cut out pictures displaying examples of such things you will like to see at each step,put it as flashcards where you can easily see them and guess what once its in your face you will like to achieve them

Step Four:Here you will need to review back to those S.M..A.R.T goals you set to work those goals,rinse and repeat till you achieve a re-purposed career

Step Five: Celebrate:Assess your goals at the end of its tenure,celebrate your wins and restrategize on your losses.Practice they say makes perfect.

Why PMI Won’t Say If You Passed Or Failed Your PMP Exam

The PMP Exam is changing on August 31st 2011. If you are taking the exam on or after this date, then your 200 questions will be based on the new PMP Exam Content Outline. To learn more about the detailed changes to the exam, please read my article “The PMP Exam Changes on 31 August 2011. What This Means For You”.

In addition to what you can find in that article, PMI recently announced the following: If you are taking the PMP Exam on or after 31 August 2011, then - for a limited time only - PMI will not immediately tell you if you have passed or failed your exam.

Let me explain: If you take your PMP Exam today, then “pass” or “fail” will immediately be displayed on your screen and printed on your examination report. But because PMI is changing the exam, they require some time to validate the new structure. They also need to make sure that the percentage of people passing/failing the new exam is in line with the percentages of the old exam. In this way, they can make certain that the new exam is just as fair as the old exam. And all of this means that in the first 4-6 weeks after the new exam is in place, they cannot immediately give you your result. You will have to wait.

Here is PMI’s original statement on this:

“As we transition to the new examination, PMI must update its examination reporting processes. This means for a short period of time examination results will not be available immediately following the examination. There will be a 4-6 week period between taking the examination and receiving the results via email. We know this will be disappointing to candidates, but please let them know the delay is necessary any time an exam changes to validate the new examination structure.”

Here is what this means for you as a PMP candidate:

1.) If you are taking the computer-based PMP exam on or after 31 August you will not receive immediate results (pass/fail) at the Prometric testing center.

2.) If you are taking the paper-based examination there will also be a delay in receiving your examination results.

3.) PMI will notify you (via email) when your results are available at PMI.org.

PMI expects that the new examination structure is validated by mid-October. Once this has happened, exam takers will once again receive their results immediately at the Prometric testing center.

Here are my recommendations for those planning to take the exam between 31 August 2011 and about mid-October:

** Don’t be disappointed: If you are planning to take your PMP Exam between August 31 and mid-October, then don’t be disappointed that you won’t receive your results immediately.

** Smile: Yes! Smile with the knowledge that you are helping PMI to assess the new exam. You have just done a great service to PMI and all other PMP exam takers coming after you. Thank you.

** Be patient: Even though PMI says that you should receive your results within 4-6 weeks we are all project managers and we know about deadlines. Allow PMI to do their due diligence and ensure that the new exam structure works.

** Reschedule: If you cannot take the suspense of having to wait for up to six weeks, then reschedule your exam for around the end of October 2011.

** Don’t leave without a receipt: After you have taken your PMP exam at the Prometric test center you will very likely still receive a printed document. It confirms that you have taken the exam but won’t have your result. Don’t leave without it.

My final recommendation to all PMP candidates is that you should simply relax. If your scheduled exam falls into this “no immediate results” window and you cannot change it… take it easy. There is nothing you can do about it. PMI is doing everything to ensure that the new exam works for you and everyone else. And this process is just part of that. Stay positive and focus your energy on your studies.

In his recent interview on The Project Management Podcast he discussed how Enterprise 2.0 project management tools can make the most of communications between team, sponsors and stakeholders. Effective Distribution
Once you complete a report, distribution is the next step. Most people send it as an attachment to an email but that isn’t the most efficient way to make sure that everyone sees it. This is because email, although very convenient, often gets lost in the maze of folders that people use to organize their inboxes. They will read a report, file it away and often forget where they put it when they want to refer back to it. Thus, the PM will receive repeated requests for duplicates which will, again, be filed away and lost!
Enterprise 2.0 project management tools give you more options and are more effective in getting your message out. It takes traditional one way communication-email-and turns it into collaboration, a two way conversation that engages both parties. A PM can set up an internet portal for a project that allows everyone to access the report repeatedly, at their convenience, and see all of the information that is pertinent to them. Successful projects depend on effective communication and that means that all parties need to contribute.

Easy Access
Enterprise 2.0 gives you a format that lets you find everything you need very quickly. It’s visible, interactive and easy to locate. It fosters communications between the team, the sponsor and stakeholders by putting information into a place where people can find it easily.
Enterprise 2.0 is interactive, too. Anyone can comment on a posted document and see others’ comment. “So it’s like sitting around in a room but you’re able to do it on your own time and everyone gets to get their say without having to compete with everyone else,” says Dennis Brooke.

Customizable Features
One of the best features of Enterprise 2.0 is that you can tailor it to your audience and make the best use of their limited time. You can create portals with a summary and drill down into areas like scheduling, status reports and other information that your audience is looking for.
There is, however, the potential for abuse. Just like email, you have to train people to use these tools. And like email, everything that is entered at the portal is there forever. People must realize that they need to be just as professional, diplomatic and responsible as they are when they use email.
Enterprise 2.0 saves an astounding amount of time. Enterprise 2.0 makes it easier to find the things you need, saving people time and frustration. Best of all, it has templates that can be customized to serve the best purposes of the audience you want to reach. It has a dashboard that gives people visual access to what they want to see and inspect then drill down into the details that they need in order to find out what they want to know.
Plus, since Enterprise 2.0 is online, it’s accessible to people all over the world immediately, whenever they want to see it. Even team members offshore can access it with a satellite connection. With Enterprise 2.0, there are no limits except those that you impose.

8 things the PMP exams changes means to the Potential PMP® Test Taker

By now you must have heard that the PMP Exams will be changing and here is why?

Every five to seven years, the Project Management Institute (PMI)® performs a Role Delineation Study(Job Analysis) to determine authority (“the role”), responsibilities & duties of project managers today.  

The findings are then used to update the Project Management Professional (PMP)® Exam. In this way, PMI ensures that the PMP Exam is a reflection of what project managers actually do in the field. If PMI didn’t regularly go through this process adding new elements and removing old ones, then you would still be tested on outdated methods that were used in the 1980s when the first PMP exam was given.

PMI completed their latest study at the end of 2010. The findings will lead to an update in the PMP Exam on 31 August 2011. .   As a result, approximately 30% of the PMP exam will change.

The Institute does this from time-to-time to maintain the quality and veracity of all its exams. And as a result of this study, it was determined that “PMI’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct is integrated into the work of project management…” and therefore “should be viewed as integrated into the day-to-day role of a project manager and important in each phase of the project lifecycle.”

8 things the PMP exams changes means to the Potential PMP® Test Taker:

1.      The PMBOK® Guide Is Not Changing

First of all and most importantly: There is NO change to the PMBOK® Guide. The PMP Exam is currently based on the PMBOK® Guide 4th Edition. The 5th edition is scheduled for publication at the end of 2012. This means that the PMP Exam will continue to be largely based on the 4th edition until sometime in 2013. Therefore, everyone preparing for the PMP Exam can continue to do so using the PMBOK® Guide 4th edition until 2013.

2.      The Exam Format Is Not Changing

The PMP Exam will continue to be a computer-based exam, and you have four hours to answer 200 multiple-choice questions.

3.      The Score Report is Not Changing

PMI stated “At this time, PMI does not anticipate any changes will be made to the PMP score report”. This suggests that the way the passing score is determined will remain the same.

4.      The Eligibility Requirements Are Not Changing

The education and experience eligibility requirements for the PMP Exam will remain the same. Please read the eligibility section of the PMP Credential Handbook for the details. 

5.      The Exam Changes on 31 August 2011

The new exam will be rolled out on 31 August 2011 and the last day on which you can take the exam under the current specifications is on 30 August 2011. No exceptions.

6.      Professional & Social Responsibility Will Be Integrated

In the current exam format Professional and Social Responsibility is tested as a separate domain. The Role Delineation Study showed that Professional and Social Responsibility is integrated into all of the work of project management and cannot be seen as separate. The Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct should therefore be viewed and tested as an integrated part of a project manager’s day-to-day work.

For the new exam, students will have to understand the effects of Professional and Social Responsibility on their daily tasks. Exam questions will ask about ethical considerations during procurement, mix social responsibility with team management and test your application of professional responsibility in a written status report. 

Studying, understanding and living the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct in your daily work as a project manager will have a much higher importance for the exam.

7.      WHAT EXACTLY IS THE MAIN CHANGE?

In a nutshell, the big change is that starting August 31, 2011, instead of having six sections to the PMP® exam (one for each of the five PMI Process Groups®, plus one for Ethics & Social Responsibility), there will now only be five sections of the test (one for each of the Process Groups®). Ethics & Social Responsibility questions will be interspersed throughout the other five sections, instead of in their own section.

8.      WHY DOES THIS CHANGE MAKE THE TEST HARDER? 

It’s much easier to answer ethics questions “in context,” meaning when you are able to look at the questions specifically as ethics questions. This is because when you know which questions are ethics questions (as with the exam currently) you are able to think to yourself, “OK, this is an ethics question, what are they asking for, based on the PMI Code of Ethics And Professional Conduct?”) But after August 30th, test-takers will no longer have that luxury. A question, for example, testing a PM on “what is the most ethical cost management decision here?” will be thrown in as just one of the many questions in the Planning, Executing Monitoring and Controlling, etc. sections of the test. So the same question will become harder for most test-takers under the new test format, because it will need to be evaluated more as a “pure question,” and not specifically as an ethics question. 

   CHANGES TO APPLICATION PROCESS

             In addition, for candidates who are getting ready to apply for the PMP, the application will be updated to reflect the current role of the project manager revealed in the new RDS.

·         In the past, PMI has required candidates to track and report their hours of experience leading and directing projects for each task within the RDS. 

·         On 31 August, PMI will update the PMP application to require candidates to track and report their hours for each domain (Process Group) within the RDS.

·         Any candidates who have an application in progress at the time the change is made will have their experience hours migrated to the new application, so that no data is lost.

Other details to note is that between 31 August and Mid October 2011,you will be sent your result via email 4-6 weeks after your test till PMI is assured that the test changes are effective instead of getting it immediately you finish the test taking process at the Prometric Testing centre. Please refer to the PMP Handbook on PMI.org for more detailed instructions. This assures me of PMI’s quality based certification.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS ACQUISITION IS A CAREER ACCELERATOR

A survey carried out by the National Association of Colleges and Employers Job Outlook 2007, employers rated communication skills, and honesty and integrity equally at the top of their list of what they look for in potential employees. Following closely behind communication, and honesty and integrity were: interpersonal skills, motivation/initiative, and strong work ethic and teamwork skills.

One thing I know about those skills was that all of them are inherent in project management, and it emphasized what people believed for years: Project Management is a career accelerator.

What is Project Management? You May ask:
1. Project management is the art of getting things done. Project management teaches you how to make the most efficient use of resources to generate the best results in the least amount of time. At the end of every project, you capture best practices and lessons learned, creating an invaluable documentation of hits and misses. Good project managers do this on every project, and you can, too.

2. It’s all about your communication skills are not about your vocabulary. They are about how you manage your communication. Are you communicating frequently enough and with clarity? Are you communicating what is relevant? Are you communicating your successes?

3. It’s all about Team Management. When it comes to being a team player there are questions you have to answer. Do you play well with others? Do other people want to be on your project team? Are you respected? Do you listen actively to what others have to say? Good project managers know when to lead and when to get out of the way. When someone is interviewing you, you know what that person is thinking: Can I work with him? Will my team work well with her? All these questions are answered in a person’s life when he or she develops a career in project management

4. It’s about remaining calm and in control because you have a Project Agreement which has all the critical information about the project in it. You know when all the deadlines are, who is responsible for what and when, and they’ve also documented changes. Everyone wants to have someone on the team who can stay calm when a project gets rocky, and bring stability to chaos.

5. It’s about Change Management. Companies change. Deadlines change. People come and go. Good project managers know they often have to adapt their plans and document what has changed and how that impacts the entire project.

6. Its about Leading. Project management is a powerful leadership tool because it not only shows us how to keep our eye on the prize and the purpose, but it’s also about the passion to achieve and succeed. Nothing feels better than accomplishment.

Project Manager Resume - How to write an excellent Project Manager Resume that gets the job!

It is indeed a difficult task to write a single project manager resume that will be effective in attaining interviews for a variety of companies in several different industries as the Project Management career cuts across industries.

Because there is so much competition for jobs, recruiters have become very good at “scanning” resumes. Scanning involves looking over a resume as quick as possible to look for keywords of interest such as “project manager”, “PMP” or “Prince2″ for example. While this is done manually, it’s often done with software as well.

With that in mind, you’re probably thinking how will I get all the experience I have as a project manager into a format that will show up in the “scan”?To cut a long story short - an effective Project Manager Resume must be built in!

For starters research the skills needed for the project management job you wish to obtain. Make sure you use action words not just nouns in the style of your writing to make an interesting read.

If you don’t know where to start then to find job advertisements for other posted job openings in project management online at various job boards like www.monster.com, and www.jobberman.com

List the qualifications required to fill the positions. Common qualifications include experience with budget management, ability to lead a team and certification in project management. Match your skills, experience and education to these requirements.

Additionally follow these steps:

1.    Do not use large font sizes stick to a basic size 12 using styles like Arial, Garamond etc that are clear to read
2.    Put all your credentials after your name.
3.    Lead your resume in line with the job you want
4.    Focus on the top third of your first page. You have 15seconds to make an impression or get your resume never read!
5.    Quantify your achievement. use monetary signs and percentages to show the recruiter the value you are going to bring to the table.
6.    Summarize your career so far putting in your role with dates and a one liner narrating what specific role
7.    Throw in industry keywords to appear in a search in case the recruiter is using an automated tool with certain criteria to select candidates
8.    Proofread your resume to check for errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation.
