What a difference a week makes! More on that later.
Today I'm focusing on the inspiration for Style Imitating Art:

So here I am underwater again


wearing my newly made, Koos designed, kaftan

plus my nail polished, polka dotted, $ store reading glasses and my newly painted old sandals.

Darn. I did it again. Hit publish before I was finished posting. sigh. Okay, let me continue after the break.

But meanwhile some story-telling. Last post was Mom Trip. The next day she was in ER. She's now in ICU. We rushed to the hospital late last night (6 hours away) when the doctor called sounding dire. I had just finished making my kaftan and was wearing it, by the way. Pretty shocking, not the kaftan, but seeing her in such a state. I don't think I can say anything else.

I was glad to be able to do the SIA easily enough, but that seems to be it.

I can't recall if she painted hers around the same time period as I did mine,
but I wouldn't be surprised. Second wave feminism was in the air.

So apparently that's the last time I painted Mom, I did myself a few times since.

Here I am at the crack of dawn on our little balcony with my true love taking a few photos before he bikes off to work at the Chicago Reader.

I love this designer, Koos Van Den Akker. His clothes are always so happy, architecturally designed, and crazy wild. hmmm. My first experience in sewing with him was my Spring Coat. You really have to pay attention and plan ahead. I even take notes and do a color sketch first to help me along since there are so many pieces and color arrangements to juggle.

I'm wearing a kimono I just made from a lovely Asian tablecloth given to me by the ever-astonishing Ms. Melanie of Bag and a Beret.

I used both the right & wrong sides of the tablecloth, both were gorgeous!

Underneath the kimono, is my tunic top that I made pre-Project Minima, but lately refashioned to fit. Doesn't it coordinate perfectly? And there's a stuffed cat pin I made during one of my jewelry bouts.

I was given a stash of alluring fabrics from my hairdresser of 30 years, Boba. The coral orange satin-y parachute harem cargo pants are made from old boudoir curtains. And of course, what could go better than THE golden boots with such an ensemble?

Fighting those demons with style every day.

I'm wearing a RW&B tulip jacket I just made from a scrap of vintage drapery. I make my own piping using another scrape of my own home-made drapes using some scrap yarn for the cording. First time for that and it was so easy. Piping goes all around the edges of the jacket. Click of bold type to see details of item. Pseudo button-down skirt was refashioned to fit awhile ago. Lost and found red Doc Martens, old lt. blue anklets and old sheriff star pin. Oh, oh, and very old silky scarf as turban and red rhinestone $ store readers.

Ho-hum. That's how I feel about my stylin' for this week's artistic inspiration:

Not about the artwork, about what I put together. But hey, I gave it a shot. Check it out after the break.

Yeah, this is it.

Well, the components of the blase outfit are: an old dark denim blazer that I've never worn, an old off-white gauze & lace p.j. top, refashioned pearls with double dinos, a made-from-scratch cotton floral pegged skirt, and old tan shoe boots. I would not wear this particular combo out and about, but I am wearing it for Style Imitating Art which goes live on Tuesday. Check out what others have styled this time around!

Meanwhile I'm going to go as I am to Patti's Not Dead Yet Style, or I might not make it at all! At least I'll be surrounded by knock-out visionaries. And maybe I can get lost in the crowd at Monday Mingle. We'll see.

March's Ms. Match

I made a whole lotta stuff lately and I couldn't decide what to wear for today. I really like everything. And it all goes together - probably a little too well. In fact, I felt kind of at a loss because of it. You know, matchy-matchy. Maybe I made a capsule wardrobe thingy. You know where everything coordinates. A black straight skirt, black straight leg pants, purple t-top and multi-print top. More about that later.

Anyway I tried to throw it off balance a bit with this reversible vest I made awhile back

I made a black knit straight skirt, and with the fabric left over I made the straight leg pants. Both from a Katherine Tilton pattern. These were the best fitting pants I've ever made. I usually have to jerry-rig them after the fact to fit right. Maybe I finally figured out the mystery of making pants that fit. (hallelujah!) Then there's a purple print knit that used a pattern created by Katherine's sister, Marcy for a T top. Although I changed that up a bit at the neckline. It was so easy, I couldn't believe it. I'm a new convert to knits because of those guys. And finally a real stash buster. I put together a wild one using all leftovers, including a broken zipper to make a top from another of Marcy Tilton's patterns. Again I went my own way with designing the bottom hemline (no revised pic of that yet). You can see the latest pieces on the Clothes for Spring page or by clicking on the bold items.

I must say I did take a few liberties here, hope no one minds...if they do, I'll put everything back as it was if I'm notified. It's just for fashion's sake.

Anyway, I'm wearing a new ombre tiered skirt I made from fabric I found in the give-away box, a refashioned grey top from the early days of Project Minima that happens to go perfectly with it, an old boiled wool sweater as a cape on my shoulders, my new-to-me pointy toe e-bay boots, and an old pale grey-blue stone necklace in the shape of a heart.

Is it Almost Spring Yet?

I've been working and working and working on my new Spring Coat. And tah-dah, here it is!

ooo, and check out those new-to-me ebay boots...

I'm so excited about it. It's made from the endless scraps of fabric I have about the place - including the vintage drapery ( the sleeves). The base is some of what I scored when the fabric store down the street suddenly went out of business and everything was 90% off. Can you imagine?!! It's embossed velveteen. I worked from a Koos pattern. I love them, always so exuberant and complicated.

I'm going to visit all the wonderful women at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style that I missed last week. And the crowd at Monday Mingle, and, of course, Lakota's Ta-Dah Tuesday. Oh, and don't forget the Pleated Poppy. Come join us.

State of the Project Minima: Y2 Q3

Seems this Winter Quarter was a slower production period with a total of 14 pieces completed. The items can be seen on the Clothes for Winter page under Year 2. On the other hand, I know I've doubled my ebaying...

Trends noticed from the last 3 months:

~ for the first time I had a 2-week hiatus from blogging that spontaneously occurred in mid February. (I think this came about due to extraneous stress from outside obligations where something had to go.)
~ joined a Bra-Sew-Along and quickly dropped out when it seemed out of my league
~ bought more boots from ebay (2 pair of cowboy boots, 1 extra pointy brown, 1 black suede & leather and 1 pair extra pointy black leather riding boots)
~ buying more patterns, now from ebay
~ I'm working more from patterns and fabric, less from old clothes to be refashioned
~ Although I do tend to deviate from patterns and go off on my own design
~ I've really enjoyed using up scraps of fabric and/or mixing fabrics in one article I'm making

Some trends I'd like to see in the next quarter for Spring:

+ Much less ebaying (come up with a schedule or limit)
+ 15 minutes a day/ a week of sorting an area
+   maybe start a project using every pattern I have...
+   do a swap...
+   figure out the self portrait-paper doll-clothes I'm wearing-drawing art project that's been on my mind

Okay now. I'm wearing a cocoon-type top I just finished making from a Vogue pattern (I have no idea if it's done correctly, it's so weird). And there's my refashioned pants into skirt, my diy golden bug necklace, with ebay cowboy boots.

I was a dancing fool. But I couldn't help it. Just look at those pants! Plus the music was stellar. Other than being a bit big, and stretchy and drapey-droopy...you can see what they actually look like on my Clothes for Winter page.

Oh wait, I think I have an undistorted, relatively speaking, picture of me wearing 'em. hmmm. Yes, yes, here it is. Oh my. I look like a sculpture done in marble - or at least the pants do.

So here I am posing in my closet wearing my true love's kimono (that I made for his birthday a couple years ago) along with my painted electric blue platform loafers. Yeah, that says Klimt all over.

The sun is shinning through the blinds and flashing on the kimono in stripes.

I also tried to muss up my hair so it would stick out more. But hey, it's straight no matter what.

...so good to me, Monday Monday, it was all I hoped it would be. Yes! What would it be like without the Visibles and Patti's at Not Dead Yet Style?! I can't imagine.

Here I am, kinda fuzzy, but there nevertheless:

Oh man, I am so bad, I have to stop. These were another e-bay thing, but they fit perfectly and are really comfy, soft leather and cost under $20 bucks. But still. Not a good trend. After this, I'm going to quit. I blame everyone else for my downfall. Yes, I'm in total denial...maybe.

The gang from the Sewing Rebellion had decided to give each other thrifted or hand-made gifts this holiday season. It was a blast! And we're already thinking about next year.

After saying I don't wear hats...I made some. I thought I'd give it a try with some knit fabric a friend gave me. I remembered I did have a few patterns for hats that came along with coats/jackets. So I looked them up and settled on two that looked do-able. Testing, One, Two...Ready?

You know I'm not going to waste a perfectly good circle of leftover fabric. My first foray into sewing with knits happened a week or so ago when I made a top out of another gorgeous print from E's leftover stash. You can see it on my Clothes for Winter page. I even bought one of those double needles to use with it. I don't know why I've avoided knits all this time...I guess I always thought they would be clingy or itchy. Not necessarily true. What do you think of knits? To wear or to sew...

It's a Monday and I can't help but post...plus I just finished a new top...and

My new Christmas eve day outfit. yeah.

I made this long, straight skirt earlier in the week and had material leftover. It's the last of the great corduroy fabric I scored recently. So I made up a tunic top from what was left along with some scraps from the skirt with big pockets and the top with changed neckline. Well, when I tried them both on together, it looked kinda kimono-esque, don't you think? The top also looked cute as a mini, if I dared, or as a tunic over other stuff. It has pockets too, see em?

as I was fiddling with it, there was a Megan Mae-type flower in my hand!?! Well, what was I to do, but search for that special gold-white metal button I've been saving all these years for who-knows-what? I sewed it on and thereby came to make my homage to Megan Mae button pin.

Please don't be alarmed Megan, it's a tribute to you and not a deliberate steal (like they do in the art world)! Actually it was an accident, that just happens when you play with round things and symmetry. I spent a year doing mandalas every day which also included folding 3-dimensional ones, so I've come up with many variations. You can see them all on my mandala-a-day blog.

I'll be posting images of the pieces I'm wearing today on the Clothes for Winter page as soon as I take their pictures. Meanwhile, Patti's taking the day off at Not Dead Yet Style, but I'm still joining the crowd at Monday Mingle.
