Project Nyx’s production of "Treasure Island" has now come to a close.

We had the great joy of welcoming audiences from many different countries and backgrounds, and all of us at Project Nyx feel truly proud to have shared our work with such an international and diverse audience.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined us at the theater, as well as to those who supported us from afar. Your presence, your laughter, and your imagination brought this island to life, performance after performance.

We are also deeply thankful to everyone who took the time to complete our audience questionnaire. Your thoughts, impressions, and generous advice will help guide us as we continue striving to create works — and a theater environment — that can be enjoyed by even more people in the future.

Some performances were sold out, and we sincerely apologize to those who were unable to obtain tickets. We have already begun preparations toward a future revival, and we hope to welcome you aboard next time!

Each performance existed only for a fleeting moment, yet the encounters we experienced will remain with us long after the curtain has fallen.

In 2027, Project Nyx will celebrate its 20th anniversary. 

We are planning new productions of another work by Shūji Terayama, "The Seven Deadly Sins of Countess Kotakagari Kikuko," to be presented in Tokyo, the UK, and France.

To ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone, please observe the following.

Eating and drinking are not allowed in the seating area.

Drinks with lids, such as bottled drinks or tumblers, are permitted.

Some scenes include audience participation.

You may be invited to sing along or playfully defeat pirates using toy guns.

Participation is optional, so please join only if you feel comfortable.

You will find a toy gun at the lower right of your seat area.

To use it, point the barrel upward, pull the rubber-attached lever down until it clicks, place the white cap onto the barrel, and pull the trigger to make a sound.

Please follow the instructions given by Hora-fuki-obasan, your guide for the performance, a woman in a large hat and a dress.

When leaving, please be sure to return the toy to its original place.

Please remain seated until the curtain call has concluded.

Staff will guide you when it is time to exit.

[Synopsis]

In a harbor town, there is a small tavern called Jigoku-tei (The Hell Tavern).

A young boy named Jim works there with many rough and strange adults.

He dreams of becoming a sailor and going out to sea, but his days are spent inside the tavern.

One day, the captain of a ghost ship appears at Jigoku-tei. He is always closely guarding a large trunk, making everyone wonder what is inside.

Before disappearing, he leaves behind a strange warning:

“Beware of the one-legged man.”

Inside the trunk, Jim and his friends discover a coded message and a map.

Dr. Don believes these clues may show the location of a hidden treasure.

Jim leaves the tavern and sets sail with his companions, joined by John Silver, the ship’s cook.

They head toward an island where the treasure is said to be hidden.

But on the open sea, pirates who want the same treasure are already waiting.

On the island, they meet Peter Pon, an old man who was washed ashore long ago.

Peter Pon claims to know every secret of the island.

So where is the treasure really hidden?

It All Started with “Treasure Island”

Published in 1883, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson laid the foundation for the adventure stories we know today. For more than a century, it has been adapted again and again into films, animation, and stage productions — across the world, and of course, here in Japan as well. In this column, we explore how Treasure Island shaped the pirate stories that followed.

Treasure Island is an adventure novel inspired by legends of 18th-century pirates and buried treasure. Written in Britain during the Industrial Revolution, the story follows a young boy, Jim Hawkins, on a journey into the unknown.

Through dangerous voyages, unexpected friendships, betrayals, and moments of moral choice, the novel unfolds as a classic coming-of-age tale.

One of the most unforgettable figures in the story is Long John Silver, the one-legged pirate.

He is not simply a villain. Charming yet frightening, warm yet ruthless, sometimes almost fatherly and then suddenly a traitor, he embodies contradiction. This complexity made him a model for the charismatic rogue — a character type that would later appear again and again in adventure novels, films, and comics.

Treasure Island also brought together many of the images we now instantly associate with pirate stories: treasure maps, an X marking the spot, buried secrets, long sea voyages, mutiny, and conflicts among crewmates.

By weaving these elements into a single, powerful narrative, Stevenson created a blueprint for adventure — one that continues to echo through popular culture, from Disney films to Pirates of the Caribbean, and even to One Piece.

This stage adaptation of Treasure Island returns to that original source — not simply to retell a pirate story, but to rediscover what kind of “treasure” still speaks to us today, here and now, on stage.

Founded in 2006 by Kanna Mizushima, a company member of Shinjuku Ryōzanpaku,

Project Nyx is an all-female experimental theatre company inspired by the art and costume designs of Aquirax Uno and the direction of Kim Sujin.

Playwright: Shūji Terayama

A pioneering figure of avant-garde expression who worked freely across poetry, theatre, and film.

As the leader of the theatre company Tenjō Sajiki, Terayama continuously explored new theatrical forms by drawing cities and audiences directly into his work.

Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventure novel "Treasure Island", this work is conceived as a musical theatre piece in which children can actively participate and experience the story.

Director: Kim Sujin

Under the direct mentorship of Yukio Ninagawa and Jūrō Kara—two pivotal figures in Japanese underground theatre—he honed his craft as a theatre artist.

In 1987, he founded the theatre company Shinjuku Ryozanpaku.

His dynamic directing style, which makes full and inventive use of theatrical spaces such as conventional theatres and outdoor tent venues, has been highly acclaimed. He has received numerous major theatre awards in Japan, including the Kinokuniya Theatre Awards, widely regarded as one of Japan’s most prestigious theatre honors, and the Yomiuri Theatre Awards, among the highest and most influential accolades in Japanese theatre.

Dramaturgy: Aquirax Uno

An illustrator and graphic designer who has remained at the forefront of Japanese visual culture for over half a century.

He has received prestigious honors such as the Medal with Purple Ribbon and the Order of the Rising Sun, and has created numerous iconic theatre posters for Shūji Terayama and Jūrō Kara.

In this production, he reconstructs the script by layering Terayama’s "Treasure Island" with elements from Terayama’s own life and tanka poetry.
