The most noteworthy part of Naya Rivera’s fashion statement at the Emmy Awards was her retro hair do.  To say it was over-the-top is probably the term for it, but what you need to take from observing the choice is that on her…it worked.  Her dark hair and olive complexion helped to make it work.
     
      Of course her jewel-toned Simin teal gown was also fabulous, along with her La Vida ring and flower pin .  And come to think of it, what girl wouldn’t want to walk the red carpet in Jimmy Choos?
     
      The whole look was bold and fun.  If you are shopping for any winter formal, consider this, her dress would be a great look to brighten even the grayest of days.

Jenny Ushkowitz of “Glee” fame graced the Emmy Red Carpet in a scarlet Kevan Hall gown.  The chiffon halter was accessorized with Neil Lane earrings and bracelet, gold strappy sandals, and a Judith Leiber clutch.
The look was not for the feint-hearted.  The jewelry, clutch, and gown were all  big statements.  But they balanced each other well and Jenny’s raven black hair grounded it.  Her beautiful skin tone made it all work.
Jenny made bold choices.  And all of the fashion notes created a lovely melody…
 

Dianna Agron’s look for the Emmy Awards in Hollywood was well-edited and had elements that were quite fancy.  Her dress by Carolina Herrera was a pink and black lace and ribbon confection that could have been overwhelming, but because of the finishing touches to her look which were simple and understated, it worked.

Dianna’s hair was pulled back in a simple chignon, and she avoided a necklace with her strapless gown . . .  a great choice.  Her accessories were very simple—a pair of dangly earrings and a small bracelet.  That was it.  No purse that she was photographed with or anything else that you could see.  (I’m sure she had shoes on, but they weren’t visible.)  It was a great example of editing your fashion choices well. 
Just remember, it is OK to choose an over-the-top dress if you are willing to scale back EVERYTHING else.
 

      My favorite part about her look was that she debunked the adage you should be careful about wearing white.  She looked fabulous.  She completed her look with a Chopard bracelet, earrings and a Swarovski clutch.

      She also smartly kept her hair simple and created an overall look that had great simplicity and harmony…even though everyone knows that she  carries the melody all by herself…

If you have started the hunt for "that perfect dress" for homecoming, last night's Emmy Awards Show was a great place to get some inspiration.  There were some interesting new ideas in colors, and many recycled style and fabric choices.

One of my favorite looks was Lea Michele's Oscar de la Renta navy flamenco ruffled gown.  It fit her beautifully, and the ruffles did not overtake her, which means that the design was perfect.  It was an exuberant look and could have been a bad choice.  But it was bold and beautiful instead.

Her casual curls were soft and flattering.  And her necklace and bracelet finished her look perfectly.  So if you like Lea Michele in Glee, or even if you don't…at the Emmys she hit the perfect note!
 

Think Madonna and Rosanna Arquette in the movie "Desperately Seeking Susan" and you will visualize the retro trend of the moment.  Its all about the 1980s madonna-wanna-be look.

If you are digging headbands, rubber bracelets, lace skirts, and over-the-top earrings, you are into the 80s look that EVERYONE wanted back in the day.  And you are not alone.  Here in L.A. the girls are haunting vintage clothing stores and Goodwill Industries.  The good news is that it is pretty inexpensive to shop this look.

As is always the case with Fashion Redux, be careful that you add just the right touch and don't go too far copying that 80s vibe.  For example, I know that leg warmers are part of that whole scene.. but just don't do it.  They weren't that great of a look twenty years ago.

Well, if you haven't purchased a new backpack for the school year, you will probably be doing it soon.  So if you aren't taking all AP classes that require schlepping your forty pounds of books every day, maybe you would like to consider another choice.

Canvas Army Messenger Bags are the new "it" bag.  They are light, durable, and pretty inexpensive.  And if you like the real used deal, go look at an Army Surplus Store, either online or in town.  Either way, they have great selections and who knows?  You might even channel your own "Harvard meets Archelologist" self!

In keeping with the trend of color choices that seem to have a history, the army green that you see in everything from blouses to pants to totes to coats…is great for fall.

It is basic, and yet makes a statement all its own.  It is also really versatile.  It looks great with camel, brown, navy, or rust.

It is sooo much better than the "Safari" patterns and colors out there.  My advice for back to school wear?  Avoid the animal prints…go army!
 

I mentioned several months ago that camel colored fashion would be big this fall and winter seasons.  And if you look around, it is everywhere.  There are of course the classic camel coats and blazers.  But also be on the look out for great skirts, pants, vests, shirts…shoes and boots…you name it.  Camel has it this season.  And it is a great neutral that you can use with everything.

So if you are feeling it…go camel with one fashion piece to update your wardrobe.
