Friday, December 5th, John Carmack of Armadillo Aerospace accepted his $350,000 Prize for winning Level 1 of the 2008 Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge. The competition, which was administered by the X PRIZE Foundation, will continue its challenge in 2009. As for 2008, the following video shows Mr. Carmack's acceptance speech at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. NASA sponsored the winning prize money for the Lunar Lander Challenge as part of their Centennial Challenges.

Space Shuttle EndeavourLands in California

Space Shuttle Endeavour landed Sunday in California after being diverted due to stormy weather in Florida. The landing at Edwards Air Force Base completed a mission of roughly two weeks for expansion of the international space station. While Endeavour was originally supposed to return to Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the high winds and expected thunderstorms necessitated its rerouting to Edwards Air Force Base in California. Welcome home, astronauts! Well done :)

Oh, Ooooops! $100K in Tools Floats Away

Astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper accidentally lost grip of her tool bag during a spacewalk on Tuesday. Apparently, a grease gun exploded inside the tool bag, coating its contents in slimy grease. The tool bag (valued at around $100,000 with contents) drifted into space when she lost grip of it. My thoughts: Don't blame the astronaut; blame the grease gun!

Space Shuttle Endeavour's Launch

Listen carefully ... 1000 mph, 1500 mph, 2000 mph! And I thought Indy cars were fast. LOL ... This evening, a little before 8 p.m. Eastern time, Space Shuttle Endeavour made its way towards the International Space Station with a crew seven astronauts. According to NASA:

Less than 10 minutes after launch, Endeavour was orbiting around Earth. Within 24 hours, Endeavour will meet up and dock with the International Space Station. ... In Endeavour's payload bay, the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Leonardo is packed full of about 14,500 pounds of equipment and supplies, making it one of the heaviest modules in shuttle history. ... Also included in the payload, are additional sleeping quarters, a second toilet, an exercise device and other household-type equipment. ... The prime objective of the 15-day mission is to prepare the International Space Station to accommodate six members for long-duration stays.

DAY 1: This video highlights Armadillo Aerospace's victory at Level 1 of the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge, October 24, 2008, at the Las Cruces International Airport in New Mexico. At stake? $350,000.

DAY 2: This video shows the results of Armadillo Aerospace's attempt at Level 2 of the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge. They were the first team to attempt Level 2 (October 25, 2008). This also took place at Las Cruces International Airport, New Mexico. At stake? $1.5 million!

Sir Richard Branson on Virgin Galactic

I recently picked up a copy of Sir Richard Branson's new book, Business Stripped Bare, at my neighborhood bookstore. I hadn't intended to purchase it, but when I saw it (with him smiling widely on the cover), it reminded me about his work towards space tourism, and I hope to learn more. I have seen him interviewed before, and he comes across as very nice and genuine. This text is geared towards success in business, but I definitely want to see what he has to say about Virgin Galactic. Although I haven't read too far into the text yet, Richard mentions the Aspen Ideas Festival. Wanting to know more, I found the following interview from last year's festival and thought it was interesting and worth sharing. FYI:
