As for relationships, the engagement is often the most romantic moment. That said, the romance of the engagement is often quickly overshadowed by the stress of planning a wedding. This article contains tips for couples that can make the planning of their wedding as satisfying as the wedding itself.

Religion will play a big role not only in your wedding ceremony but in your marriage as a whole. Of course, by this time, the two of you should have it worked out how things will operate on that level, but getting the families on the same page may be more difficult.

Online wedding gown purchases can be easy on your wallet, but give yourself enough time for alterations as needed. I bought my gorgeous gown online for only $150, but it cost me another $200 to have it altered to fit me perfectly. Make sure you consider this cost in your wedding budget.

Online wedding gown purchases can be easy on your wallet, but give yourself enough time for alterations as needed. Even though a gown can be fairly cheap, having it altered to fit your perfectly can sometimes be more costly. Be sure to work the additional cost for alterations into your overall budget.

Only place a few flowers in the centerpieces at your reception tables. Usually, the flowers are only in your guests’ way. In addition, some guests could be allergic to flowers. Think about putting candles that aren’t scented onto the table. This can create a romantic look.

As you plan out table arrangements, you should avoid seating an odd number of guests at each table. Instead, each table should seat an even number. As well, consider grouping tables by the ages of guests. This way those at the tables will have more to talk about.

Make a detailed itinerary with directions, so guests know when and where the wedding and reception will be held. Make sure you tell everyone where they will be needed, for instance at the rehearsal.

Make sure your wedding reception lighting can be dimmed at the venue. You will probably want to lower the lights for your first dance, but have brighter lights during most of the reception. Before you sign any contracts with the venue, make sure this is an option.

You can use Craigslist to locate talent in your area. Meet up with them in person, do an interview, and discuss your needs and wishes before you pay anything.

Use the information and tips from this article to take control of your wedding planning and to help you focus on the happiness of the occasion. If you plan far enough ahead of time, your wedding will be the perfect beginning to a life with the one you love.

You can take organic gardening as a hobby, or as a science. With these tips, you should become a very successful organic gardener.

Be sure to plant some strawberries for your children and grandchildren. Ever-bearing ones are especially nice. Small kids enjoy picking fruit themselves out of a garden. Because of this, they’ll be more likely to provide you with some assistance in your garden if they feel like they’re receiving something out of it.

It is common knowledge that grounds from brewed coffee are good for soil. Coffee grounds are filled with nitrogen, that is a nutrient required by plants. Plants need an adequate nitrogen source in order to thrive. Adding coffee grounds, chemical fertilizer, or diluted urea to your soil increases the soil’s nitrogen content and will help to make your plants grow faster, taller and healthier.

Pine is a surprisingly good source of mulch. Certain plants are acidic, and thrive in acidic soil. When you have any plants like this, it’s very simple to just collect pine needles to use in your bed. Cover soil beds with a few inches of pine needles, and they will disperse acidity to the soil below as they decompose.

Make gardening efficient. Don’t waste your time by looking all over for your tools. Set up the tools you will need for your day prior to hitting the garden, then put them away neatly at the end of your gardening session. You can use a tool belt, or you may want to wear pants with extra pockets.

Plastic bags can be kept on hand and reused to slip over your dirty gardening shoes. This way, you won’t break momentum by fussing with your shoes, and you’ll be quickly back in the garden to finish your work.

You can stop mud from being tracked into your house by covering your dirty gardening shoes with plastic bags. This way, you can maintain your momentum and head right back to your garden so that you can finish what you were doing.

When planting seeds in containers, remember that the planting depth should be around three times bigger than the seed size. There are exceptions to this rule, however. Some seeds should remain uncovered because they thrive in direct sunlight. Petunias and ageratum are two examples of seeds that require sunlight. If you are not sure whether your seeds need to be exposed to sunlight, resources are usually provided with the seeds or can be found online.

The importance of organic food in your diet cannot be understated, although achieving this in your own backyard can be challenging. The tips you’ve found above are sure to help you get off to a good start on growing chemical-free healthy food.

Here’s how to carve a pumpkin including a step-by-step pumpkin carving video – Halloween just wouldn’t be the same without a scary pumpkin lantern!
We’ve got together with housetohome.co.uk to create this easy step-by-step guide to pumpkin carving – it’s fun for all the family. Watch our pumpkin how-to today.

1. Choose a large, smooth pumpkin.
2. Grab a sharp knife or small saw to cut off the pumpkin lid.
3. Insert the knife at a 45 degree angle to stop the lid from sinking when you put it back in.
4. Use a metal spoon, ice cream scoop or a melon baller to remove the insides of the pumpkin but remember to save the flesh for a tasty recipe.
5. Find a scary pumpkin carving pattern or draw the outline of a face using a black marker.
6. If using a template, sellotape it onto the pumpkin and mark it out using a fork.
7. Use a knife to carve out the design and pop the pieces of pumpkin out into the inside of the pumpkin for a smooth finish.
8. Pop a candle inside and place outside your front door or in your lounge window.

10th September 2013: Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield argue with former Apprentice star Katie Hopkins over celebrating her children’s birthdays.

Katie Hopkins, who has 3 children, said that she didn’t agree that a child’s birthday is their special day, much to the horror of hosts Phillip Schofield, Holly Willoughby and guest Shona Sibary, writer and mother of 4.

Katie said: ‘Too many children are seen as too special and have everything – bags of presents from Early Learning, bags of presents from Toys R Us. I think it’s really important that children learn that mummy has to work in order to provide for us all and at the weekend or at a convenient time we’ll pick up and have a birthday then.’

Holly appeals to Katie, asking her if the day isn’t a special day for her too because she can remember the day she gave birth to them, but Katie dismisses the comment as ‘overdramatic’.

A shocked Shona adds: ‘I can’t believe that you’re suggesting it’s OK for your children to wake up on the morning of their birthday and not open any presents.’

But Katie replies: ‘Their presents are in a room and it’s their choice whether they open it on their own or they can wait until I’m back at the weekend and we’ll open it together. It’s their grown-up choice to make.’

Phillip then asks Katie if it’s true that she holds one combined party every other year for her 3 children. When she admits it is, he asks: ‘Are you tight?’

‘I’m efficient,’ Katie replies.

Watch the argument unfold on our clip and the insults start flying!

So what do you think? Is it OK to not be there on your child’s birthday? Is it OK to postpone it? Is Katie being selfish or realistic? Let us know in the comments section below or on our Facebook page.

Your kids will love learning about their family history with this cute family tree craft we spotted on UK mummy blog domesticgoddesque, so we just had to share it with you!

It’s a great way to teach your kids about their roots and who makes up their family including grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins. It also makes a cute piece of artwork for the wall or gift for a relative for Christmas. You could even make a mini version and stick it to the front of a greeting card. Plus don’t forget to add a picture of the family pet too!

Family tree craft equipment:

1 piece of plain card

1 piece of green, brown and red paper

Photos of the family members you want to put on your tree

1 pencil

1 felt tip

Scissors

Glue

Family tree craft instructions:

Tear some strips of brown and green paper and stick them to a piece of plain card to make the family tree trunk and leaves.

Cut out the faces of your family members from old photos or copies of photos and mount them onto round shapes of red card using glue, to make the family tree apples.

Plan out in pencil who goes where on your family tree starting from the top. Stick the faces onto the tree and use a felt tip to draw a stalk and leaf above their photo, to look like apples.

Draw the lines between the faces to show how they are related. You could even write names under them if you like. And if you have a family pet don’t forget to pop a picture of them at the base of the tree!

Safety tip:

Children should always be supervised by an adult when using sharp tools like scissors.

BEND, OREGON — This year Horizon Family Solutions is celebrating over a decade of assisting families.

During these ten years, Dore Frances has been asked for her opinion by Seventeen Magazine and interviewed by The Monterey Herald in California. She also spoke at the Boise High school in Idaho about the dangers of drugs and answered some very tough questions from both parents and teens. Not seeking publicity Dore Frances has shared information with attorneys, counselors, doctors, families, health care providers, and other professionals through her two newsletters and the most recent addition of RMG Teen Alerts.

She also has several e-Book publications in process that will assist families in crisis who are needing to make a placement decision and are not able to travel ahead of time. Recently Dore Frances was accepted into the American Evaluation Association (A.E.A.) and will be conducting in-depth evaluations of programs and schools that are assisting families in raising today’s teens. Frances knows personally the anguish parent’s experience when their home is being invaded by an out of control teen, who themselves is in crisis. She too choose to place her own daughter in a residential therapeutic treatment center over 10 year ago. Neither she nor her daughter have any regrets. Since that time Dore Frances has learned a lot about the benefits and concerns of programs and schools that have invaded the Internet. It is always painful when needing to make a decision about placing your child in the care of others, usually far from home. You want a quick fix, and have your child reunited with you as soon as possible. However, it does take time.

The crisis did not happen overnight and you will not come back from it overnight. Dore Frances knows first hand that there are excellent addiction treatment centers, clinical programs, eating disorder programs, learning disability schools, residential treatment centers and wilderness programs all across the United States.

She has visited hundreds of programs and schools in Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho and many other states. It is more important than ever that these programs and schools do the very best they can in the areas they specialize in and that parents, as well as programs, remember that one size does not fit all. Over the years Dore Frances has assisted attorneys with keeping children out of juvenile hall, has helped counselors who refer to her when they realize the teen is past a weekly counseling visit and in more crisis that they can assist with, has spoken with doctors about the best referrals for children, teens and young adults and has taught parenting classes in California, Idaho, Montana and Oregon.

With today’s ever expanding world of technology, many parents go to the Internet looking for help. In doing so parents are flooded with promises from beautiful websites as well as well-trained commission paid sales tele-marketers who all want the family’s money with little concern for the child. Frances realizes from her own investigative experiences of visiting programs and schools that the fantastic websites on the Internet are not always the same as what you see when you step onto their front porch.

“Website fact verses Website fiction is time consuming and expensive to determine” Frances says. “This is why these in-depth Evaluations have proven to be priceless to a family in crisis. I have created a useful tool for parents and professionals who cannot travel all over the country and spend a day or two at every program. These 30+ page Evaluations will be published with an approved rating system from the AEA, and will assist many who are needing to make a placement decision for a child, teen or young adult.”

Dore Frances continues her Advocacy and Independent Educational Consulting work and strives to educate parents and professionals about what tools are valuable in selecting a program and what websites may be deceiving in their marketing efforts to lure in a parent in crisis and convince them that they need to make a quick decision to send their child to them or their child may die. These destructive marketing practices are dangerous. To learn more about Dore Frances or when you are searching for an addiction treatment program, residential therapeutic boarding school, eating disorder program, wilderness program or need a school for your child who is struggling with a learning disability visit www.Horizonfamilysolutions.com for more information.

Whether your child’s moving up to secondary school, or they’re feeling the pressure of exams, there’s lots of things that might be worrying them as they go back to school. From making new friends, to bullying concerns, your questions are answered by psychologist Adrian Pennington…

Q: My 4-year-old child is very shy and is worried about starting school. How can I reassure her?

A: Any ideas why your child is shy? In a young one it might be a sign of inner anxiety which affects their confidence levels. If you know anyone of a similar age in school, let them tell your daughter about the good things to look forward to. Take her to check out the school, so she has an idea of what to expect. Talk to the Reception staff, and find out the sort of things she’ll be doing. Then practise these at home with her, so she gets some preparation for what is to come. Build her up by showing your confidence in her, and get her to mix more with other children so she gains social skills with peers. Encourage her independence, and don’t let her see any of your own nerves about this. You’re her first teacher and can make a big difference to how she deals with life situations and changes.

Q: My child got bullied last year. How can I stop it from happening this year?

A: Every school must operate an anti-bullying policy. Talk to the school, and if it doesn’t take appropriate action, write a letter of complaint to the school Governors, naming names of those who failed to act. If no satisfaction is gained there, write to your Local Education Authority. However, the reality is that, on an everyday basis, we are talking survival, and there are only a certain number of viable alternatives in my view. If your child has friends, then they should stay with them as much as possible [safety in numbers]. Don’t go to the areas where the bullies hang out. Don’t take valuables to school, in case they make your child a target. Try and blend in by not standing out. The other option is to do stuff to build self-confidence, eg: self-defence classes; sport; drama.

Q: My child often says things like ‘I’m no good at maths.’ How can I restore his confidence?

A: Confidence comes from competence, so extra assistance might be a good thing. Perhaps you can help him, or one of his friends who’s good at Maths, or get private tuition. Maths is a subject where it’s important to learn the basics, then other things can fall into place. If you help him get his head around it, improvement is certainly possible. Be positive.

Q: How do I prepare my child for the change from primary school to secondary school?

A: If possible, arrange at least one visit to the new school prior to your child starting; many secondary schools operate such systems with their local feeder primary schools in the Summer Term. In fact, some send Yr 7 pupils back to their old primary schools as ambassadors, where they tell the Yr 6 kids what it’s like. Another thing to do is get an older kid you know from the school (brother or sister?) to spend some time with your child, to tell them about the place. The more we know about new situations, the likelier we are to cope better, instead of our imaginations running away with us.

Q: My child hates her teacher. How can I change her attitude?

A: Perhaps it’s not about changing her attitude. Ok, so she hates her teacher. Tell her you accept her feelings, but get her to explain what’s so hateful about the teacher. If the explanation makes sense, you could contact the school to discuss the issue, if it actually affects your daughter’s classroom behaviour and attainment. Otherwise, she can like or dislike whoever she wants to, I guess – but that doesn’t mean it’s an excuse for misbehaving or not doing her work properly. Just because we don’t like someone, that doesn’t mean we have to become messed up, unhappy or depressed.

Q: My child is worried about being separated from her friends when she starts secondary school. How can I help her make new friends?

A: If they’re going to the same school, investigate whether she can be put in a Form with at least one of her friends. If she’s the only one going there, encourage her to join clubs and teams, to meet new people. If it’s a major issue, contact the new school to discuss your concerns ahead of time.

Q: My teen never takes his school work seriously. How can I get him to see how important it is without causing a row?

A: Don’t bother arguing, it’s often counter-productive. Teens don’t want to be told what to do, they know what’s best! When he’s prepared to listen, quietly tell him that it’s his choice, his decision, but if he deliberately messes up, then he will have to accept the consequences – and mean it. Tell him if he ends up with no job, college, training opportunites because of his decision-making, you won’t be giving him pocket money, buying his trainers, or paying for holidays abroad. That might make him think more seriously. Good luck.

Q: My teen gets very stressed when exams and coursework deadlines are looming. How can I help her?

A: A very common problem, particularly for students who are not used to studying, revising, and attending to their subjects. If they haven’t got the learning habit, the reality of deadlines, revision and exams can hit hard. Secondly, even the most conscientious students can experience ‘performance anxiety’. I run Exam Stress Management courses for Yr 10 and 11 students and Sixth Formers, which are very successful, and involve understanding where anxiety comes from and how to control it, in order to be calm and focused at the right time, and perform well. More educational institutions should be using such courses to address concerns like yours. Some schools and colleges do run study skills and revision lessons. Help her produce a coursework time schedule on the kitchen wall. Be sympathetic and encouraging, making sure she knows you’ll always love and support her, no matter what. Some anxiety comes from kids not wanting to let down their parents.

Q: In your opinion, do you think children feel pressurised more nowadays to look a certain way?

A: From the 1960s and the arrival of TV advertising, children have been targeted to look and dress in certain ways, and be defined by the designer gear they wear and carry. If kids don’t have the right stuff, they might be ‘losers’, left out, ridiculed, even bullied. Yes, I agree with you.

Q: How can I help my children to deal with peer pressure to look and dress a certain way?

A: Important here is your relationship with your child. Another is remembering that children want to be accepted by their peers; it’s part of their development. If they dress a certain way to fit with their friends, that’s quite normal. I would be more concerned that they can come to you if they need to talk about pressures. By criticising their dress, we can drive our children away from us. Focus more on making sure they have good values and standards which will guide them to stand up against negative peer pressure concerning dodgy behaviours.

Q: I’m concerned my child might be acting differently or unhappy at school, but not showing it when she’s at home. How can I find out without being intrusive?
A: If you have good times with your child, when things are calm, tell them you love them, and ask how school is. Being interested in your child isn’t being intrusive, so long as you give them some space. It’s about balance. You can always make a crafty phone call to their Form Tutor or Head of Year, and check to see if your child is coping at school, or having problems.

Q: When my child comes home from school, they are silent and won’t talk about their day. Does this mean there might be a problem?

A: Not necessarily. When one of my sisters reached about 14, she began to be quiet after school, going straight to her room for an hour or so. This continued until she was about 16. It drove my mum nuts ! Mum made me find out what was going on. It was simple – after a day at school, my sister just wanted to be left alone to unwind…. I don’t know how old your child is, or for how long they’ve been like this or if it’s sudden or gradual. Also, do they stay silent all evening up to bedtime? If you know their friends, you could subtly check to see if things are ok. You could contact school to see if they have any concerns about your child. Or, in a quiet moment, hug your kid, say you’ve noticed their silence, and ask are they alright?

It can be extremely intimidating to go to college because of all the things you must be aware of. This article may be able to help you find out how to go about the college experience.

If you already know that college requires a lot of money that you don’t have, get a loan. College has a number of financial rewards ultimately, so it is acceptable that you acquire a bit of debt to help with that.

You should apply for loans and grants as soon as you can. These important resources will help you to limit your future student loans. Figure out a system that allows you to manage your finances and allows you to apply for things quickly.

Study daily. The more you spend applying yourself to your education, the more rewarded you will be. By getting the mindset of treating your education like a job, you can find a chance to be social while keeping a strong focus on academics. Succeeding in college paves the way to a more lucrative career.

During college, become involved in lots of activities. The more activities that you participate in that reflect your various interests, the better your resume will look in the end. Make sure you only take on what you can handle so your grades don’t slip.

Locate the gym on campus and make regular visits there or just take a daily walk and explore the campus. You can form friendships with the more active members of your campus, and stay active yourself. Also, you can find friends to go with to the gym, which can expand your social circle.

To avoid problems with the freshman 15 or even the freshman 20, be sure to keep a close eye on the amount of simple carbohydrates you consume. You want to stay away from processed foods. Stick to produce, whole grains and low-fat dairy to keep energy levels high. Try not to build your diet just around protein, as that is not optimal for your health.

Be sure to eat a healthy breakfast on test days. You can even eat light; try some fruit or yogurt. Feeling hungry might keep you from performing well on a test. Eating before a test will keep your body and mind energized and focused on the work at hand.

If you love coffee, don’t buy a cup every day. It’s just too expensive. You should brew your coffee instead of buying it at a shop. Although you may be tempted to buy your morning cup of coffee to save time, it is best to save your money and make your own. Check your local discount store for an affordable coffeemaker.

Now that you have learned a bit more about returning learners, do you feel more comfortable? You’ll find many people around who are in the same boat. It is quite common for people to return to college later in life. Have no fear! When you take college seriously, you will be successful.
