Fact vs. Fiction: Uncovering Auto Insurance Myths

Like a teenager eager to try a new video game, playing before reading
the rules, many drivers buy insurance without really understanding what
they’re buying.
In the rush to feel “covered,” they can skip the details. That can lead
to frustration.
Following are five insurance myths heard by some of the more than 13,000
claims people at Progressive, one of the country’s largest auto
insurance companies:

Myth: I bought “full coverage” so everything’s paid for.
Reality: There is no such thing as “full coverage.” In most
states, only liability insurance is mandatory. There are a lot of other
coverage options out there, so select what you need and can afford based
on your personal situation.

Myth: I need three estimates before my wrecked vehicle can be repaired.
Reality: Not necessarily. Very few insurers actually require
this, although some might. If you decide to use a shop that’s in an
insurance company’s “network” of pre-approved shops you may just have to
get an estimate from that shop.

Myth: My insurance premium always increases if I’m involved in an accident.
Reality: It depends. Your rate can increase, decrease or stay
the same. The information about your accident is combined with other
information about you, your car and your driving history to determine
your rate.

Myth: If I lend my car to someone and he/she crashes it, I’m covered.
Reality: Not so fast. If you or your friend doesn’t have
optional physical damage coverages, damage to your vehicle generally
won’t be covered.

Myth: If I buy a new car, my auto insurance company automatically knows; and my new car is covered.
Reality: No. Most insurance companies require that you notify
them or your agent within a specified number of days. Generally, you
have 30 days to add the new vehicle to your policy. Insurance can be
complicated. It’s not something people deal with every day. So the more
informed you are, the better choices you’ll make.
planning an annual getaway. While most people spend lots of time looking
for ways to maximize their budget, one costly decision is often left to
the last minute whether to buy the optional insurance offered by a
rental car company.

Deciding whether to buy ‘damage waivers’ or insurance at the rental car
counter can be a confusing experience especially if you don’t know if
you’re already covered by your personal auto insurance policy. Optional
rental car insurance can cost between $7 and $25 per day, depending on
the rental car company, vehicle make and model and type of waiver. Those
daily charges can significantly add to the cost of your rental.

Follow these three tips, courtesy of Pronto Insurance Agency, to help you decide whether or not you should buy the coverage:

1. Consult with an independent insurance agency – like Pronto Insurance
Agency. As licensed insurance professionals, independent insurance
agents and brokers can review and evaluate your policies to find out if
the coverage you have on your personal vehicle provides protection for
you in a rental car.

2. Check with your credit card company. Some credit card companies
provide coverage at no charge if you use their card to charge the cost
of the rental. However, some restrictions may apply so be sure to ask

question that these papers can help answer or, if you’re in doubt,
you’ll have your agent’s name and phone number readily available. “We
want people to have the information they need to make more informed

think about saving time, but the insurance company you choose can
actually have a big impact on your time should trouble strike.

If you’re in an accident that results in a claim, you could spend days handling the claims/repair process yourself.

That’s one reason it’s a good idea to check out insurance options that
can save you time. For instance, the concierge level of claims service
offered by The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies is a unique
claims repair option that takes only 15 minutes to complete. Simply drop
off the damaged vehicle at one of Progressive’s facilities offering
this service and a claims representative handles the entire
claims/repair process for you from start to finish.

Here’s how the process works:

You can call or go online to report a claim anytime of the day or night
and schedule an appointment to bring the vehicle to a nearby facility
offering the concierge level of claims service.

In about 15 minutes, you’re in a rental car (if included on your
policy) with assurance that you’ll receive updates from your claims
representative.

Your claims representative prepares a repair estimate and contacts an
auto body shop that has met strict quality requirements. Progressive and
the shop reach an agreement on the cost of the repairs and the shop
trans-ports the vehicle to the facility to begin repairs.

When work is finished, the vehicle is returned to the insurance
facility, where your claims representative and the body shop inspect the
repairs.

After the insurance company is satisfied with the repairs, you are
called to pick up your car. You inspect the repairs and, if satisfied,
drive off with a guarantee on those repairs for as long as you own the
vehicle.
Throughout the process, you receive updates via phone or online.

insured survives the stated period, which may be one or more years but usually is

    protection.

Term: Period for which the policy runs. In life insurance, this
is to the end of the term period for term insurance.

Third-Party Owner: A policy owner who is not the prospective insured.
The policy owner and the insured may be, and often are the same person. If for example,
you apply for and are issued an insurance policy on your life, then you are both
the policy owner and the insured and may be known as the policy owner-insured. If,
however, your mother applies for and is issued a policy on your life, then she is
the policy owner and you are the insured.

protection against catastrophic losses covered under liability policies, such as
the business auto policy, commercial general liability policy, watercraft and aircraft
liability policies and employers liability coverage. It provides excess limits when
the limits of the underlying liability policies are used up by the payment of claims
and it drops down and picks up where the underlying policy leaves off when the aggregate
limit of the underlying policy in question is exhausted by the payment of claims.
It also provides protection against some claims not covered by the underlying policies,
    subject to a self-insured retention

Underinsured Motorists Coverage: Provides coverage for bodily injury,
and in some states property damage, for losses incurred by an insured when an accident
is caused by a motorist who does not have sufficient insurance limits

Underlying Coverage: The insurance or coverage in place on the
same risk that will respond to loss before the excess policy is called on to pay
    any portion of the claim

Underwriter: Company receiving premiums and accepting responsibility
for fulfilling the policy contract. Also, company employee who decides whether the
company should assume a particular risk; or the agent who sells the policy

Uninsurable Risk: A person who is not acceptable for insurance
    due to excessive risk.

Universal Life: An interest-sensitive life insurance policy that
builds cash values. The premium payer has control over how the policy is structured.
He has the flexibility to eliminate the premiums (essentially pay up the policy
and pay no more premiums) or have the premiums continue for life. It is a matter
of juggling three variables: the assumed interest rate, the cash value and the premium
payment plan. The policy is interest-sensitive, and if interest rates change from
the assumed interest, it will affect the other two variables. In the past, many
Universal Life Policies were structured assuming a higher interest rate then was
actually received, therefore, most of them have under performed. If you have a Universal
Life Policy, you should have it evaluated to see if it needs
to have the premiums adjusted to get it back on track. A fourth variable that has
not been a factor but could be in the future, and the owner should be aware of,
is the Mortality variable. Universal Life policies are usually structured assuming
current mortality rates. The insurance companies reserve the right to change those
    rates.
Unearned Premium: That portion of the policy premium that represents
    the unexpired policy term

Uninsured Motorist Coverage: Provides coverage for bodily injury,
and in some states property damage, for losses incurred by an insured when an accident
is caused by a motorist who is not insured

Utility Service Interruption Coverage: Coverage for the loss to
an insured due to lack of incoming electricity which was caused by damage from a
covered cause of loss, such as a fire or windstorm, to property away from the insured's
premises - usually the utility generating station. Also referred to as 'off-premises
    power coverage'

Vacancy Provision: Property insurance provision found in commercial
property policies that restrict coverage in connection with buildings that have
been vacant for a specified number of days, usually 60 days

Valuable Papers and Records Coverage: Coverage that pays the cost
to reconstruct damaged or destroyed valuable papers and records and usually includes
almost all forms of printed documents or records except money or securities; data
processing programs, data and media are usually excluded

Waiver of Premium: Rider or provision included in most life insurance
policies exempting the insured from paying premiums after he or she has been disabled
for a specified period of time, usually six months.

Waiver of Subrogation: Also known as 'transfer of rights of recovery,'
the relinquishment by an insurer of the right to collect from another party for
damages paid on behalf of the insured

Whole Life Insurance: Life insurance that is kept in force for
a person's whole life as long as the scheduled premiums are maintained. All Whole
Life policies build up cash values. Most Whole Life policies are guaranteed as long
as the scheduled premiums are maintained. The variable in a Whole life Policy is
the dividend which could vary depending on how well the insurance is doing. If the
company is doing well and the policies are not experiencing a higher mortality than
projected, premiums are paid back to the policy holder in the form of dividends.
Policyholders can use the cash from dividends in many ways. The three main uses
are: it can be used to lower or vanish premiums, it can be used to purchase more
insurance or it can be used to pay for term insurance.

Workers' Compensation: Protection which provides benefits to employees
for injury or contracted disease arising out of and in the course of employment.
Most states have laws which require such protection for workers and prescribe the
length and amount of such benefits provided

A surety bond is a written agreement that usually provides for monetary
compensation in case the principal fails to perform the acts as
promised.

There are many different types of surety bonds, but the two general
categories are Contract and Commercial Surety bonds. Surety bonds
provide financial security and construction assurance on building and
construction projects by assuring project owners that contractors will
perform the work and pay certain subcontractors, laborers, and material
suppliers. A bond can also help protect an owner from liens against the
owner's property if the contractor fails to pay workers or suppliers.

When you’re working with an agent to build your policy, make sure to ask
questions and get answers to help you decide which coverage is right
for your business.

Business owners insurance offers coverage for medium to small
businesses. A business owner’s policy, also known as BOP insurance,
combines several types of insurance coverages together so you can buy a
package of protection at a competitive price. With a business owner’s
policy, your small business can get liability insurance, equipment
breakdown, property insurance, and additional protection, built into one
convenient package.
When you’re working with an agent to build your policy, make sure to
ask questions and get answers to help you understand and decide which
coverage is right for your business.

holiday bills, preparing your tax return and more. It’s also a great
time to review the general state of your finances to see if you need to
make any changes in the coming year.

Many people don’t consider the importance of insurance in an overall
financial plan. But the fact is, no matter how hard you work to build
wealth, failure to purchase adequate insurance can be your undoing. On
the other hand, paying for coverage you don’t need can also sap your
budget. Finding the right balance can be a challenge.

That’s why now is a good time to sit down with an independent insurance agent and review your needs. Think of an insurance agent as a vital
information source, one that can help think through an individual
situation and can put together a package of policies, coverage and price
that meets specific needs.

An independent agent can ask the right questions to help better determine the kind of insurance needed.
Because an independent agent can check prices from many different
companies, he or she can help get the maximum coverage at reasonable
cost.

Here are just a few of the questions to ask an independent agent as you consider an overall financial plan:
What type of policy is right for me? This depends on factors such as
budget, the amount of coverage needed and the level of service you want
from an insurance company. Finding the appropriate level of coverage is
important. You don’t want to overpay for coverage not needed, but you
also want to keep in mind that the worst experience is to have a claim,
then discover there’s not enough coverage.

How do rates from different companies compare? Independent agents are
licensed to represent multiple insurance companies, so they can shop
multiple companies to get the coverage you need at an attractive price.
Are there other ways to save? As a person’s situation evolves he or
she gets married, has kids, buys a new car check in with an independent
agent. Companies offer various discounts for such life changes, and this
information could help the agent find additional savings.

Did You Know?
Finding the right insurance balance adequate coverage that doesn’t
include items you don’t need can be a challenge, but an independent insurance agent can help.

Using the right tool for a job is key to success in any profession.
Experts say the same principle applies when selecting an auto insurance policy. Having the right type of policy can help ensure that you, your
employees and your business are all protected in the unfortunate event
that one of your vehicles is involved in an accident.

If you’re a business owner and you or your employees use a vehicle for
business-related deliveries or to carry certain materials to and from a
job site, you may need a commercial auto insurance policy that’s
tailored to more closely suit the needs—and risks—of a business vehicle
operator.

Here are some questions that can help you determine if you might need a
commercial auto policy instead of a personal auto policy, courtesy of
Pronto Insurance Agency

Do you need more liability coverage than your personal auto policy
provides? Generally, a commercial auto policy provides higher limits of
liability, but less or no coverage in areas that are typically not
associated with commercial auto risks.

Do you need special coverage for situations associated with con-ducting
business? Commercial auto policies also usually offer certain
coverages—such as hired and non-owned auto coverage and coverage for
towing a trailer for business use—that are not available with personal
auto policies.

Do you need to list any employees as drivers? You can do this with a commercial auto insurance policy.

Do you use your vehicle for business purposes? If you use your vehicle
for things like pizza or newspaper delivery, catering, door-to-door
consulting service, landscaping or snowplowing service, logging
business, day care/church retreat van service and/or farm-to-market
delivery, you might need a commercial auto policy.
when you’re asked a tricky question. Do you want to buy damage waivers,
also known as car rental insurance? How will you answer?

Knowing if you need to buy rental insurance can save you money and give
you peace of mind. Optional insurance could nearly double the cost of
the rental. Do your homework and know before you go.
Here are some pointers:

Review your policy with your independent insurance agent. Your agent can evaluate your personal car insurance policy to find out if you are covered in a vacation rental car.

Check with your credit card company. Some credit cards provide
coverage at no charge if you use their card to pay for the rental.
However, some restrictions may apply. Be sure to ask for an exact
description of what’s covered.

Take your insurance policy “Declarations Page” with you to the rental counter.
You may be asked a question that these papers can answer. If you’re not
sure of an answer, you’ll have your agent’s name and phone number
readily available.

“Generally, if you have comprehensive, collision and liability coverages
on your personal car insurance policy, there’s a good chance you’ll be
covered in a rental car,” says Crawley. “Check with your agent to be
sure. If you are covered, you would be liable only for the deductible on
comprehensive and collision coverages, just like your personal
vehicle.”

Auto Insurance Made Easy

Understanding insurance can often be like trying to learn a foreign
language. Many find it confusing and intimidating.
Fortunately, there’s help. Here is a quick reference designed to help
you understand some of the most common kinds of coverages. The reference
was put together by The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies.

Liability covers bodily injury and property damage (BI/PD). This
covers your legal liability, up to the dollar limits you select, for
damages caused to others in a covered vehicle accident. In most states
today, liability insurance is mandatory.

Under BI/PD, your insurance company pays for damages to an injured
person and for property damage that you are legally obligated to pay as a
result of an accident. If your policy covers you in the event you’re
sued after an accident, your insurance company will pay for a lawyer to
defend you.

Liability limits generally appear as three numbers, for example,
25/50/25 or 100/300/100. The first number refers to the maximum amount,
in thousands, that your insurance company is obligated to pay for bodily
injury per person. The second number is the maxi-mum that would be paid
out for bodily injury per claim and the third number represents the
maximum amount your insurance company is obligated to pay for property
damage you cause.

Collision When you buy collision coverage, your insurance company
pays for damages if your vehicle collides with another vehicle or
object. Collision coverage involves a deductible amount you select when
you purchase your policy. This amount is what you are required to pay
before your insurance company starts picking up the tab. Remember, the
deductible amount is the amount you need to pay in the event of a claim.

Comprehensive covers damage caused by events other than a car
collision such as fire, theft, vandalism, hail or flood. It also covers
damage caused by your vehicle colliding with an animal. And if your car
is stolen, it will cover the cost of a rental, subject to a daily limit.
Like collision coverage, a deductible usually applies.

Medical Coverage Depending on the state in which you live, you
may have available to you Medical Payments coverage or Personal Injury
Protection (PIP) coverage. While these both work differently, they
provide coverage for medical care provided to you as a result of a car
accident.

Did You Know?

Many consumers are finding they can drive down the cost of car insurance—and the time it takes to select the right policy by contacting
an independent insurance agent or broker.

Because they represent many different insurance companies, independent
agents have the flexibility to review rates and coverage from competing
carriers and get you the best deal. Plus, they can offer affordable
protection for your home, business and other assets. So rather than
spending hours gathering quotes from various companies, you can get it
done with one simple call or visit to your independent agent or broker.

If you’re thinking of contacting an independent agent, here are a few things to consider:

What’s your lifestyle? Many factors determine auto insurance rates, not
just vehicle year, make and model. Companies also look at information
about you. If you’ve recently moved, gotten married, had a birthday or
experienced a similar life milestone, mention this to your independent agent or broker. You may be eligible to save money on your car
insurance.

Sweet 16 doesn’t have to be sour. Having a new teenage driver usually
means the auto insurance bill will go up, but there are ways to save. An
independent agent or broker can find them for you.

How old is your car? You don’t always need the same level of physical
damage coverage on older cars as on newer ones. If you drive an older
car, your independent agent or broker can advise you what level of
coverage makes the most sense. If you want to keep your physical damage
coverage, consider raising your deductible that could save you money
each year, too.

Save money on the fun stuff. If you have a motorcycle, boat, RV or other
“toy,” you might save money by having it covered by the same company
that insures your car. Talk to your independent agent or broker about
it.

You may also want to consider separating your homeowner’s policy from
your car insurance policy. Bundling your homeowner’s policy with your
car insurance doesn’t always save you money. It may, but have your
independent agent look at separating the policies the discount you may
have gotten for keeping them together may be outweighed by the lower
price another company might have for your car insurance.
Did You Know?
Bundling your homeowner’s policy with your car insurance doesn’t always
save you money. It may be wise to have an independent agent look at
separating the policies. The discount you got for bundling may be
outweighed by a lower competitive price.

Consider separating your homeowner's policy from you car insurance policy. Purchasing them separately can sometimes save you money.

But did you know that there are different kinds of insurance agents and brokers—and the one you choose can make a big
difference in the type of service you get and the choices you’re
offered?

Here’s the difference:
Captive agents and brokers. Captive agents work with a specific
insurance company, and as part of their business agreement with that
company, they can offer only that company’s insurance products. They may
also be required to sell other products from that company, such as
annuities and investment plans.

Independent agents and brokers. Independent agents and brokers can offer
products from many insurance companies. This helps them better serve
your interests, as they can review multiple options to find a policy and
rate that’s right for you. Insurance rates vary from company to
company. Independent agents can put together a customized insurance
plan.

If you’re ready to contact an independent agent to talk about saving money on car insurance, here are a few things to consider:

Has your life situation changed recently? Many factors determine auto insurance rates, not just vehicle year, make, model, body type and
engine size. If you’ve recently moved, gotten married, had a birthday or
experienced a similar life milestone, mention this to an independent
agent or broker. You may be eligible to save money on your car
insurance.

Is your car getting older? You don’t always need the same level of
physical damage coverage on older cars as on newer ones. If you drive an
older car, an independent agent or broker can advise you on what level
of cover-age makes the most sense. Raising your deductible could save
you money each year, too.
Do you have another type of vehicle that also needs coverage? If you
have a motorcycle, boat, RV or other “toy,” you might save money by
having it covered by the same company that insures your car. Talk to an
independent agent or broker about it.

Another plus to working with an independent agent or broker is their
ability to offer guidance for all your insurance needs—auto, home, life,
business and more. They can customize a package of policies just for
you.

Did You Know?
Unlike captive agents, independent agents and brokers can offer products
from many insurance companies. This helps them better serve your
interests, as they can review multiple options to find a policy and rate
that’s right for you.

Some insurance agents represent just one company while others represent a
lot of companies, possibly enabling you to get a better deal.
