Science vs Humanities

People struggle with different kinds of prejudice in society, but there is one which is very deeply entrenched and it shows no sign of letting up…the belief that science is ‘better’ than Arts or Humanities. That people who study science and mathematics are more ‘intelligent’ than those who study languages or design. That people who study science and mathematics are more ‘hard-working’ that those who study history or architecture. And so on and so forth.

This year a brilliant girl whom we know chose to study architecture and her parents, both doctors, disapproved. They let her though, because they were convinced that their brilliant daughter had chosen architecture because she didn’t want to work hard. After she was a few months into her course they found that she was working very hard indeed and often stayed up till three in the morning to work. The reaction of her parents? But if we knew you weren’t averse to hard work we would have persuaded you to take up medicine. The fact that she was doing something she loved (the reason for her hard work) or that even students of architecture studied hard was something that hadn’t struck them.

But this girl is lucky. Because there are umpteen examples of parents forcing their children to take up science (followed by engineering) even if aptitude tests reveal that their children are better suited to the Humanities. Boys are pressurised far more than girls. It is strange that this attitude of parents hasn’t changed all that much inspite of the economy opening up and well-paying career options for Humanities students being available. From advertising and architecture to law, management or even the airlines, the fashion industry, TV, publishing….the list is endless…

Old attitudes are dying hard. Naturally. It’s not just society which is giving out these science is holier-than-humanities vibes. The prejudice has been well institutionalised. Why, entrance tests to management institutes are biased in favour of of those who score high on mathematical and scientific ability! But why? Isn’t people management the basics of good management? And studying the humanities can give you that extra edge. And if some people want to disagree, tell me how many questions does a CAT entrance exam have that tests the ability to work in teams, potential leadership skills or even judgment in real-life situations? You may be a cat in mathematics, but hey if you turn out to be the Hari from the Naukri advertisement, then you aren’t a good enough to be a manager. Sure, humanities students can turn into Hari’s too, but we’ll only know if entrance exams test these abilities, give weightage to them and reduce the emphasis on scientific and mathematical ability.

Prejudices exist in the west too. There are people who believe that engineering, mathematics, and science is “much more difficult and important and useful.”

While a basic knowledge of science and mathematics may be required in certain disciplines, so are people skills! Take medicine. Medicine needs something more than even people skills, it needs some amount of innate compassion for human beings. People who have an abundance of this quality may not all want to do social work…some of them might want to become doctors too. And they may not be brilliant in mathematics or science. In India particularly many good people lose out on medical careers even though they are passionate about the field because of high levels of competition. Getting into a government medical college (where fees are affordable) is impossible unless you are a brain, academically speaking. And good private colleges are beyond the reach of the middle class.

I read a very interesting report (unfortunately could not find it online) about how medical schools in America are trying to attract Humanities students and are altering the criteria for admission. In any case, the education system out there does allow combinations (of subjects) that we can only dream of here in India.

Our education system does not allow a combination of Humanities and Science subjects after the 10^th grade. It’s either ‘Arts’ or ‘Science.’ In the 11^th and 12^th grade if you take Science its Chemistry/Physics/Mathematics/Biology plus a language or two. That’s what they call pre-med. There are no options of taking other subjects, with a lower/minor or higher/major category tag.

No wonder science courses are thought to be more ‘useful.’ It’s the system. The entrance tests, even for design institutes are biased in favour of science students. How then can we expect society to change?

Foreign Languages In the age of information super- highways, we all have become world citizens. Advent of the process of globalisation has made the coming together of people from different countries much more easier. Opening up of economies has resulted in MNCs coming to our country and setting up business here. And it is precisely because of this that learning foreign languages is not merely an advantage for all those who want to work abroad but also for those who want to grow in life. Obviously, opportunities to learn these languages is also increasing. In addition to numerous freelance options, language professionals find application in various sectors like aviation, hotel management, tourism, teaching, etc.

Earlier, teaching was the traditional choice of language graduates, but things have undergone a sea change and a wide variety of lucrative careers is available.

To become a General Translator you should have excellent writing skills and a strong vocabulary in at least two languages. This profession poses various challenges because different languages generally do not have same syntactical pattern and many words and phases do not have equivalents in other languages.

In recent years the need to translate reports, contracts and various business documents for MNCs set up in India has grown many folds. This kind of translation is Technical Translation. The corporate houses approach various translation centres for this purpose.

The job of interpretation involves a lot of trust because it is the interpreter only who knows the crux of the conversation which is going on. Further, the interpreter must possess very high proficiency over the language concerned because unlike the translator he does not enjoy the facility of a dictionary. The work has to be done on the instant. A good awareness of the current developments and the familiarity with new technical terms would definitely help them in being more successful. Generally, interpreters find job as tourist guides. After specialisation they can also work at international seminars and meetings.

With more and more professionals relying on skilled transcriptionists, it has become a very fast growing industry. The most popular job of medical transcriptionist, requires a knowledge of medical terms and familiarity with the American accent is essential.

Teaching is the most traditional choice of a language graduate and still is very popular. Various schools, colleges and specialised language institutions provide different avenues to the graduates. After acquiring experience you can also prepare teaching materials like books and CDs. Teaching can also be done on a freelance basis. Proficiency in at least two languages and possession of excellent communication skills is a must to become a successful language teacher. He/She should also be able to work under pressure. And with time the deemand for language teachers is ever increasing.

Apart from the aforementioned options, people with a knowledge of a foreign language can find jobs as airhostess and flight stewards. For all those executives and students who wish to travel to the non - English speaking countries for either work or further studies, the knowledge of a relevant foreign language is a must. It can also prove beneficial to those businessmen who intend to expand their business.

There are only a few institutes which insist on completion of Plus Two, otherwise, most of them do not have any eligibility criteria for admission.

Remuneration in this field depends upon the employer, skills and experience. The nature of job also makes a difference. For example, a translator can expect to earn between Rs.150 to Rs. 300 per page for Indian languages, between Rs. 300 to Rs. 500 for popular foreign languages such as French and German, and upto Rs. 750 per page for Japanese or Arabic.

People wishing to make a career in this field must have the aptitude to grasp the use of language. They need to have adaptability, good people's skill and an attitude for reaching out. It takes time to gain proficiency in language hence patience and perseverance is required.

Special education is the education of students with special needs in a way that addresses the students' individual differences and needs. Ideally, this process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, accessible settings, and other interventions designed to help learners with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and community than would be available if the student were only given access to a typical classroom education.

Common special needs include challenges with learning, communication challenges, emotional and behavioral disorders, physical disabilities, and developmental disorders.^[1] Students with these kinds of special needs are likely to benefit from additional educational services such as different approaches to teaching, use of technology, or a resource room.

Intellectual giftedness is a difference in learning and can also benefit from specialized teaching techniques or different educational programs, but the term "special education" is generally used to specifically indicate instruction of students whose special needs reduce their ability to learn independently or in an ordinary classroom, and gifted education is handled separately.

In most developed countries, educators are modifying teaching methods and environments so that the maximum number of students are served in ordinary educational environments. Special education in developed countries is often regarded less as a "place" and more as "a service, available in every school.Integration can reduce social stigmas and improve academic achievement for many students

The opposite of special education is general education. General education is the standard curriculum presented with standard teaching methods and without additional supports.

Criminology (from Latin crīmen, "accusation"; and [Ancient Greek|Greek]] -λογία, -logia) is the scientific study of the nature, extent, causes, and control of criminal behavior in both the individual and in society. In law and economics, insurance is a form of risk management primarily used to hedge against the risk of a contingent, uncertain loss. Insurance is defined as the equitable transfer of the risk of a loss, from one entity to another, in exchange for payment. An insurer is a company selling the insurance; an insured or policyholder is the person or entity buying the insurance policy. The insurance rate is a factor used to determine the amount to be charged for a certain amount of insurance coverage, called the premium. Risk management, the practice of appraising and controlling risk, has evolved as a discrete field of study and practice.

The transaction involves the insured assuming a guaranteed and known relatively small loss in the form of payment to the insurer in exchange for the insurer's promise to compensate (indemnify) the insured in the case of a large, possibly devastating loss. Remote sensing is the small or large-scale acquisition of information of an object or phenomenon, by the use of either recording or real-time sensing device(s) that are wireless, or not in physical or intimate contact with the object (such as by way of aircraft, spacecraft, satellite, buoy, or ship). In practice, remote sensing is the stand-off collection through the use of a variety of devices for gathering information on a given object or area. Thus, Earth observation or weather satellite collection platforms, ocean and atmospheric observingweather buoy platforms, the monitoring of a parolee via an ultrasound identification system, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), X-radiation(X-RAY) and space probes are all examples of remote sensing. In modern usage, the term generally refers to the use of imaging sensor technologies including: instruments found in aircraft and spacecraft as well as those used in electrophysiology, and is distinct from other imaging-related fields such as medical imaging.
There are two main types of remote sensing: passive remote sensing and active remote sensing. Passive sensors detect natural radiation that is emitted or reflected by the object or surrounding area being observed. Reflected sunlight is the most common source of radiation measured by passive sensors. Examples of passive remote sensors include filmphotography, Infrared, charge-coupled devices, and radiometers. Active collection, on the other hand, emits energy in order to scan objects and areas whereupon a sensor then detects and measures the radiation that is reflected or backscattered from the target. RADAR is an example of active remote sensing where the time delay between emission and return is measured, establishing the location, height, speed and direction of an object.
Remote sensing makes it possible to collect data on dangerous or inaccessible areas. Remote sensing applications include monitoring deforestation in areas such as the Amazon Basin, the effects of climate change on glaciers and Arctic and Antarctic regions, and depth sounding of coastal and ocean depths. Military collection during the cold war made use of stand-off collection of data about dangerous border areas. Remote sensing also replaces costly and slow data collection on the ground, ensuring in the process that areas or objects are not disturbed.
Orbital platforms collect and transmit data from different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, which in conjunction with larger scale aerial or ground-based sensing and analysis, provides researchers with enough information to monitor trends such as El Niño and other natural long and short term phenomena. Linguistics is the scientific ^[ study of natural language.Linguistics encompasses a number of sub-fields. Linguistics is narrowly defined as the scientific approach to the study of language, but language can be approached from a variety of directions, and a number of other intellectual disciplines are relevant to it and influence its study. Semiotics, for example, is a related field concerned with the general study of signs and symbols both in language and outside of it. Literary theorists study the use of language in artistic literature. Speech-language pathology is the study of disorders of speech and language. The field was referred to as ‘Speech and Hearing’ in earlier literature. Speech-language pathologists, sometimes also called speech therapists, asses, diagnose, treat and help prevent speech, language, cognitive, communication, voice, swallowing, fluency and other related disorders. They provide a range of services including prevention, identification, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, teaching, counseling and consultation. They also engage themselves in basis and apply research activities related to human communication problems in language, speech, voice and fluency. They work with people who cannot make speech sounds or cannot make them clearly; those with speech rhythm and fluency problems, such as stuttering. Audiology:

Audiology is the study of hearing and its problems. An Audiologist measures a person’s hearing. Diagnosis hearing loss and prescribes a suitable hearing aid whenever necessary. He/she may also be involved in auditory rehabilitation of hearing impaired children and adults. Hearing screening, noise measurement may also be part of an Audiologist’s job requirement. Audiologists assess the extent of hearing loss, balance and related disorders and recommend appropriate treatment. These services are provided to people who are deaf or hard of hearing and persons at risk if hearing loss due to noise exposure, genetic causes or middle ear infections. Branches of Meteorology:

Climatology :

Deals with the study of climate of a place or regions on the basis of weather - related date gathered over a period of time.

Synoptic Meteorology :

This branch studies the movement of low pressure area, air, masses, fronts, and other weather systems, depression and tropical cyclones. Data are collected on a weather map, which map, which help the exports to get a synoptic view of world weather. As a result, day - to day analysis and forecasting has come to be known as synoptic meteorology.

Dynamic Meteorology:

This is the study of atmospheric process through mathematical equations. Taken together they are known as numerical model.

Physical Meteorology:

This entails the study of the physical process of the atmosphere, such of the physical process of the atmosphere , such as solar radiations, its absorption and scattering in the earth- atmosphere system, the radiation back to space and the transformation of solar energy into the Kineric Energy of air. The parts of physical metrology are the study if rain process and cloud physics.

Agricultural Meteorology:

In this branch focus of study is the application of meteorological information for the enhancement of crop yields and reduction of crop losses because of adverse weather.

Applied Meteorology:

Here, the meteorologists use weather information and adopt the findings of theoretical research of suit a specific application , like design of aircraft, control of air pollution, architectural design, urban planning , exploitation of solar and wind energy , air conditioning . development of tour ism, etc, How to become a Meteorologist ?

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recruits students at Grade II level through application submitted to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) . Minimum Qualification for the above are M.Sc physic /Maths or in Applied Physics of Maths or Computer Applications; B.Tech Engineering / Computer Application ; B.Tech Engineering / Computer Science, M.Sc Electronic or B. Tech Electronics. Students of B.Sc are also recruiter in the IMD through applications forwarded by the respective employment exchange. All those can also apply to to MD, who have done their Master's Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences or Geo - physics or Meteorology as one of the subjects. People with Master's degree in Physics or Maths with Astronomy or Astrophysics as one of the subjects along with Masers degree in Science from a recognized University or equivalents are also eligible to apply. Public Relation is a profession that involves promotion intended to create goodwill for a person or an institution.
