Positive Move

Young minds move forward in achieving greater development of their talent through the guidance of Scheed International in the previously held Rotaract Club of Kingston Arts Competition 2011. There were eleven competitors and twenty pieces submitted within which young members of the Scheed International team were contingents.

The competition was a fierce battle but out of it success came from the three persons of the Scheed team: first place went to Adrian Douglas who won a scholarship to do two certificate courses at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, a gift certificate of ten thousand Dollars to purchase materials along with a cash prize of fifteen thousand dollars, third place to Melissa Brooks and forth place to Trudi-Ann Baker.Working in varying mediums their works were really powerful in comparison to those of the other participants.

Metal, fabric, glitter, sand, shells, decorative stones, buttons etc. were some of the materials used to construct the pieces submitted.

With oversight and Experience Scheed Cole, ceo of Scheed International, is a constant mentor in the lives of these inner-city youths who see the potential in striving for greatness despite their current dispositions. He allowed them the opportunity to create by making his workshop their space for unleashing their creative energies. This has been a process which he has been participating in for the many years he has spent working in the community of Arnette Gardens developing the talents of the youths enabling them to own and develop their skills and themselves as contributors to society at large.

It is always an encouraging feat when the private sector can come together patriotically to instill hope in the minds of the Jamaican youth. Though there have been recognized efforts, there needs to a greater interest in these ventures as for far too long the young men and women of these communities have remained marginalized, limited by the insurrections of our social institutions. Change must happen, but will only be worthwhile when we all as citizens of this nation are apart of it .

It was Friday June 10 to Sunday June 12 2011

We hope you were at the Expo held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel to see the many fantastic booths, and especially the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) booth done by us.

Not only was our team of ninjas on a short schedule to create this 10’’X20’’X 8’’ booth in four days, but they only had a sketch of an idea to work with. From concept to construction the team assembled, ready to complete the task, their sole mission to AMAZE.

“It took four days and nights, I got no sleep but, we just knew it was something we had to do”, says Rhoan McConnell project manager. “…there was constant evaluation, determining what to scale down and what to embellish.”

The design was a multisensory experience, displaying four biosphere from the swampy but arid deserts to lush forested regions of Jamaica, from waterfall to rivers, to the sea. When visitors went to the booth they felt hot in the desert, and cool by the wet forest, they could touch the animal life and the plant life. To create this environment, with some props being made from scratch on short notice, also meant much of the backdrop had to be painted.

“We did not have enough time to print, fortunately, which made us stand out”. McConnell further explains that the UDC booth was probably the only booth that did not have a printed backdrop of some mountain top or forested region, making it unique to all who viewed it.

Aside from Props and More, this year’s Green Expo was dubbed “the best Green Expo yet”. The entrance was excellently done by Stephen Jones Landscaping, a formidable landscaping company.

Come out to view the new Eat Jamaica Campaign Mascot.

Approximately 30 farmers are expected to participate Negril's farmers' market tomorrow.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) is hosting another farmers' market and this time it is in the parish of Westmoreland at the Norman Manley Sea Park tomorrow.

The event, which will be held close to the roundabout, will run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The market will cater primarily to small hoteliers, villas and the general public.

Like the previous farmers' markets, a wide assortment of fruits, vegetables and ground provision will be available. More than $17 million was earned at the last farmers’ market held on March 18 across six locations.

The Eat Jamaica Campaign Grand Launch on March 1,2011 at the Coronation Market was a success. The organisers choose aptly the Coronation Market Downtown, Kingston, and created quite a stir. Digicel had certainly done it's best to facilitate this, as the facilities were comfortable and totally becoming of a International Market.

The healthy eating campaign is endorsed by Props and More Limited,(makers of the Doctor Bird Mascot), Asafa Powell, Melanie Walker, Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Micheal Frater and Nester Carter, who were all in attendance. “I really love what the Government is doing with this programme and I really do hope they will continue because this is what is needed (to support local production),” said Walker

With both parts of the political divide on board with the European Union (EU) and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), It is my wish that Jamaican's will do their best to "Eat what we grow and, Grow what we eat".
