Using sound to detect cancer – Elastography scans

A new technique in cancer diagnosis may eliminate the need for invasive biopsies. The scan uses sound waves to make the tumour mass vibrate and can tell a doctor if the mass is benign or cancerous on the spot. Julia Layton reports that “In a small elastography study whose results were revealed at a radiology conference in 2006, elastographs correctly identified benign versus malignant tumors with a nearly 100 percent success rate.” (Layton, 2006).
