When Buying a Used Car;

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Find your car you want by browsing through ads in magazines or do it online.

compare prices with other similar cars - different sellers value their cars differently.
Prepare a list of questions to ask the seller, such as 'what is the condition of the car', 'has it been in an accident', 'how many previous owners'
Check how much is left owing on the car to the finance company and make sure that the seller has settled the amount fully before you take possession of the car.

TAKE A TEST DRIVE

It may seem perfect on paper, but driving the car is the best way to find out if it's exactly what you are looking for.

Bring along your valid driving license
Drive the car from a cold-start if possible -tell-tale signs like juddering, excessive smoke and rattling noise will be less obvious in a warm engine.
Go through all the gears - make sure you test the car at different speeds and on varying road surfaces.
Listen carefully for any grinding, screeching or knocking noises as they could indicate problems or undue wear and tear.

INSPECT THE PAPER WORK

There are three main oieces of paperwork you need when buying a car - the registration card, Puspakom certificate and service history.

Registration card - ensure that all the details on the certificates tally with the car and the seller; particularly the VIN (Vehicle Identfication Number), number plate, make, model and year. Never buy a car without a registration card even if the seller says it has been sent to the JPJ. Make sure tha registration card is genuine bearing the water mark. Also, make sure the seller has the right to sell the car.
Puspakom certification - all Puspakom certificates are printed by computer. If you want assurance that a cert is genuine, call the Puspakom enquiry line at 1-800-88-6927 for verification. Remember, a Puspakom certificates is not a guarantee of the roadworthiness - you should always carry out your oen checks too.
Service history - check for a service book full of garage service stamps - and check the mileage tallies with that shown on the dash. A pile of receipts is even better; a conscientious owner will keep all old bills so you can tell what work has been carried out. Don't forget other bits like installation certificates for aftermarket alarms, for instance.

HAGGLE FOR A LOWER PRICE

Buyers rarely pay the advertised price for cars and will usually expect to haggle. If you are delaing with a trader, you'll have room to negotiate or get a bit more for your part exchange. Failing that, ask them to chuck in warranty, mats ot other features you fancy (GPS, window tint). Private sellers are also ripe for haggling. Try and secure better price for the car especially if the tyres are worn or the road tax is close to expiry.

Many of us would opt for used car for so many reason, the common one is financial affordability, model that has stopped its production and convinience. However, there are many cases that you spent more than it should worth. Worst case scenario, you get unexpectedly conned due to inexperience. Here are some simple tips for you to follow when you decided to hunt for a good car.

Make sure you get the seller's home phone number and meet them at their home address to inspect the car if you are buying from a private seller. This way, in any circumstances you get to meet the seller for any problems that may occur to the newly bought car. Please remember, a used car is not in its out-of-the-box condition. Menial problems like loose screw or rattling sound from the dashboard may be common. Problems like engine breakdown or rattling sound from the engine are the example to knock an occupant's door.

Wheels should sit neatly within the arches and equally on both sides. Check out for uneven wear on the tyres - this could hint at improper alignment - and make sure they are not 'bald'. Refer to the examples of wear above. It can give you a general clue on how the tyres are misaligned.

Check the cabin for unnatural wear - for instance, a car with 50,000km on the clock should not have an unduly worn cabin with saggy seats and loose controls. In the picture above you can see some dark marks on places most touched or brushed. The other parts you might want to look at are at the steering wheel, mat and door handle, look for signs of significant wear and tear. The conditions could tell you approximately how worn the car is.

Inspect the bodywork for scuff marks and overspray - it's nearly impossible to buy a used car with showroom perfect body, so an unnaturally faultless car could mean a respray to cover up damage. What matters here is you need to indentify whether or not a car has ever been in an accident, because if it has, the car has less safety and less sturdy frame.

Check under the bonnet - the engine oil should not be sludgy. An unclean engine need not be a sign of neglect, but look out for oil and fluid leaks, these usually require attention and fixing.

How to inspect a car body when buying a used car - illustrated guide

Please note, this article is designed to give you basic knowledge about how to inspect a used car and can possibly help you to avoid used cars with potential problems. However, this information cannot substitute for detailed mechanical inspection performed by a professional. To protect yourself, take a car to a mechanic of your choice for detailed mechanical inspection prior purchase.

It's not recommended to buy a car after an accident, especially after frontal collision. Why? - Because sometimes the collision repair shops use cheap substitutes instead of original parts. - The A/C condenser - the part of the air conditioning system often gets damaged in a frontal collision. If not properly repaired, the air conditioner may stop working later. - Strong frontal collision can damage the integrity of the vehicle body making it less stronger. - There is a possibility that as a result of an accident the vehicle will develop some mechanical problems later such as wheel alignment problems, noisy wheel bearings, etc. - The secondary paint job not always looks and holds as good as original, the color may not match and later the paint may start peeling off at the edges.

So, how you can protect yourself from buying a car after an accident provided that there are so many of them on the market and usually no one will inform you about previous accident the vehicle had been involved in. Here is the real example: why the body shop keeps the half piece of the car like this one in the picture? Because when they get the same model vehicle with rear end damage, they will weld a front undamaged part together with this piece and here you are: three-years old car with low mileage. They will sell it probably through some auction and then it may appear in some used car dealer's lot as an "Immaculate condition with low mileage car". The dealer him(her)self may not be informed about any accident the car might have in the past. Read few tips below how to inspect a car body for signs of previous accidents.

Check the car history.

Obviously, the best way to start before even looking at the car - check the vehicle history report which can already tell you if there is something wrong. Get the VIN number of the car you're interesting in and check the history records. If the report doesn't show anything bad it doesn't yet mean the car is 100 percent perfect. Not all accidents are reported. Read below how to discover signs of previous accident.

At the beginning

Ask the owner or a salesperson if the car has had any accidents? The dealer, if he (she) is aware, must inform you. However, from my experience, it doesn't happen very often when a seller or a salesperson would inform you about previous accidents. Often a salesperson may not even be aware of this. So, rely only on what you see and can verify, not on what you have been told. In general, it is not a big deal if a car has been involved in minor "fender-bender" collision or if only one body panel (a fender or door) had been repainted; it could be a scratch or some other minor damage. But avoid cars that have been seriously damaged in a collision or have been flooded. Also avoid cars that had been badly corroded and then repaired. A rust tends to reappear again.

Look at the body lines

Body lines are straight.

Look alongside of the car. The lines of the car body should be perfectly straight. Look at the top image, this Mercedes-Benz hasn't been in an accident and you can see the body lines are perfectly straight. Look at the reflection: it is perfect, no ripples and paint quality of all panels looks the same. Try to check the entire car this way.! If the car is dirty, don't hurry. Ask to wash it first, or you may miss something.

Uneven body lines.

But look at this image. Check this Toyota's rear fender. You can notice that the reflection on the rear fender isn't perfect. Therefore, you can suspect that this rear fender has been damaged. Although as I said, it's not too big a problem if only one body panel has been damaged, but at least, you can ask for a lower price.

Check all the gaps between the fenders, doors, hood and trunk

The gap between the right front door and the right front fender is wide.

Every gap should be even along its entire length. Similarly, the gaps on one side of the vehicle have to be of the same width as the gaps on the opposite side. Look at this image. This Pontiac was offered for sale at one of the large dealership. My friend wanted to buy it, so he invited me to look at it. Looking closely, we found that the gap between the front fender and the door is wide on the right side.

So I went around the car and this is how the same gap looks on the left side. After further inspection I found that this car has been hit in the front sideways, so its whole front end has shifted to one side. When we pointed this to a dealer, they took the car off sale.

Try to find the border between original and new paint

Look at this image. This is the Toyota shown above. As you already know, its left rear fender has been repainted, but its roof hasn't, which means there should be a border between the different coats of paint. Try to check all such places; maybe you'll find one. A skilled painter can make such a border almost invisible, but often it's quite easy to see. So, take your time and look carefully.

There is one more sign you may find - peeled off clear-coat. It usually happens because the area wasn't sanded properly before painting, as in case of "cheap-cheap" repair

Look for paint over-spray

Look at window trim, door mouldings, rubber seals and other places that aren't supposed to be painted. In this photo you can see the spot of new paint on the rubber hose which means the car has had a paint job. Try to check carefully all such places.

Check the hood and door holding bolts

As you see here, this hood has been realigned from its original position. It's another sign that this car has been involved in an accident. Try to lift up the driver's door when it's open - does it have a free play in the hinges? Excessive free play - excessive use.

Check if the color and paint quality match

It's very difficult to repaint a replaced or damaged panel (like a fender, door or hood) in exactly the same color as the original. This means, that if one of the panels has been repainted, there might be a slight difference in color. Try to find if the color and paint quality of different panels match. Usually, the difference in color is easier to notice from a distance. Also try to look from different angles. For example, in this photos you can see, that the difference in color is hard to notice on one view, but is more visible from a different angle: in the lower photo you can see that the front fender has been repainted.

Feel the painting with your hand; an original paint should be perfectly smooth. If you feel some unevenness under the paint, it's a sign that this area has been repainted. Look closely at the spot where you feel unevennes. You may notice some little things under the paint (a little piece of hair, dust, etc.).

Check the rust.

Look at these image. This is one of the common places corrosion begins. If you find some spot of corrosion, continue your search more carefully. Check the floor under the carpet, door's bottom, trunk and wheel arches. Take a little magnet and try to make it cling to the bottom of the doors, fenders and other places where you suspect some defect.

If there is too much filler under the paint, the magnet won't cling. However one or two small spots of corrosion isn't a big deal.

Check the vehicle's frame.

Almost all pick-up trucks and many SUVs have a separate frame. The frame is a very important component, as it holds the the vehicle's body, as well as the engine, transmission, suspension and the steering. Check it visually, it shouldn't have any damage or major corrosion. Watch for signs of previous repairs. If you spot fresh undercoating, be alert, as I've seen many times the undercoating is used to cover evidences of body work or corrosion. Avoid a vehicle if a frame is badly corroded or shows some evidences of repairs.

Look for signs of flood damage

If a car has been flooded in the past, even if it looks and runs good now, it will develop many expensive-to-fix problems later. This is because water gets inside many components where it shouldn't be and eventually, the corrosion will cause a component to fail later. Watch for mildew smell, water stains on the seats, roof liner and door covers. Inspect door covers and trunk covers for possible signs of water level. If it's possible, look for moisture under the carpet. Check lower edges of the door covers for water damage, look for corrosion and water debris in the spare tire well. look for badly corroded metal parts under seats. Check all door speakers - water could damage the speaker diaphragm. Coffee-with-milk color of the engine oil or transmission fluid may indicate presence of water. History report can also reveal flood. Be suspicious if the history report indicates that the car came from another state.

Have the car inspected by a mechanic

Before making your final decision, have the car inspected by a mechanic. There are many things that only an experienced mechanic will be able to reveal.

Wash your car thoroughly using car shampoo, a sponge and dry with a chamois
Top up the oil and other fluid levels and make sure the tyres are the correct pressure – better yet, give it a full service
Drive your car the day before viewing to remove rust from the brake discs and to identify any potential faults.

SET A PRICE

Price your car accurately to get a quick sale

Research similar cars to get a feel of the market. The cars advertised in magazines and online are a good source.

Write great advert and increase your chances of selling

Be concise – summarise key features and main selling points
Lay down the price clearly – it’s frustrating to read an ad without a price
Highlight the fact if the car has full service history and is maintained by official dealers and service centres
Use a good photos to flatter your car – a picture communicates much more than words and is vital to make your ad stand out from the rest.

DEALING WITH BUYERS

Arrange meetings with buyers during office hours at convenient locations while banks are open for business

Make buyers aware that they will need a valid driving license if they want to take a test drive – this is to protect yourself in case of an accident
Suggest a good test route that will emphasise you car’s strengths. Eg: highway for good cruisers, twisty sections for good handling cars
Never let the buyer test drive the car alone. Turn the engine off and keep the keys to yourself if you are swapping seats.
Be prepared for buyers to test the performance with your car but make sure they do it safely and ask them to slow down if you feel uncomfortable or if they become too aggressive.
Expect buyer to haggle – don’t be insulted by a low offer, instead counter with freebies like new tyres or a free tank of petrol.

Proton Holdings Berhad has just announced the price for their latest model P3-21A that is from MYR62,000-RM75,000 per unit according to the variance of specification available. Bookings are able to be made since yesterday (14th March 2012) for only RM500 at any available Proton showrooms throughout Malaysia.

Proton stake sold by Khazanah to DRB-Hicom

Malaysia's state-owned investment firm Khazanah has sold its stake in carmaker Proton in one of the biggest deals in the country's auto sector.

Khazanah offloaded its 42.7% stake in for 1.29bn ringgit ($410m; £269m) to DRB-Hicom.
DRB, owned by billionaire Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, will have to make a mandatory offer for the remaining shares.
DRB already assembles vehicles for Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz.
"DRB-Hicom's proposal also demonstrated the company's extensive involvement in the automotive sector and its network of strategic partnerships, both local and international," Khazanah said in a statement.
"DRB-Hicom's proposed strategy and business plan provides an effective platform to enhance Proton's sustainability and meet its long-term growth needs."

'New doors'

Proton has been struggling to keep hold of its dominance in Malaysia, thus the deal came. It has seen its market share fall to 30% from more than 60% five years ago. The carmaker has been attempting to tie up with various international manufacturers in the past few years to gain its popularity in the market again. There have been rumours of proposed tie-ups with Volkswagen and General Motors. However, none of those have materialised into a formal partnership.

Analysts said the deal with DRB, which is very experienced in the sector, will bode well for Proton, as the former was expected to inject cash and boost production numbers at Proton's plants.

"It's a fair deal. It bodes well and will open new doors for Proton," said Ahmad Maghfur of OSK Research.

"For DRB-Hicom, it will mean short-term pain for long-term gain."

'Strategic divestment' The sale is the latest in a series of divestments that Khazanah has undertaken in recent years. The investment firm has also offloaded its stake in Pos Malaysia Berhad and Time dotCom Berhad. The company said it had been divesting controlling stakes in businesses that it sees as non-core and non-competitive assets. Khazanah's managing director, Azman Haji Mokhtar, said the Proton deal was "another significant milestone in our strategic divestment programme as it represents the largest in size to date". Mr Azman Haji Mokhtar added that the divestments were aimed at making government-linked companies become "stronger and more competitive".

Back in the old days, I wish I had known this so I could buy a car when I was a student. Friends with cars they make a lot of money by renting them to other students who need to use car once in a while. Yep, it pays their installment too. Back to the issue we have here, it is actually very easy for students to apply loan for cars. The idea is that their documents are supported by parents' document as guarantor. Students cannot apply without support as they do not have a documented income yet.

All you need are your photostated identification card (IC), driving license, offer letter from college/ university, student card and additional documents from parents. These additional documents depends on the parents' occupation. I can be either your father or your mother or your guardian. It cannot be your aunt or uncle or other relatives.

For parents working for government, government-link company, private company:

For parents with their own business/ company

For foreign students, it is a bit different. You need to have a guarantor from government or government-link company, who is with Malaysian nationality. If you have none, then I suggest you to opt to buy cash or continue installment from those you can trust.

Hear! Hear! Our aftersales department is making an effort to provide you a better service. Oh well, some of you may have experience faults in your power windows of your Proton cars. So Proton is making a change to that by moving to a better commitment by giving you warranty for your power windows. Are you eligible? Check the terms and conditions set for this special treatment:

Terms and conditions:

The Lifetime Warranty is defined as ten (10) years of a customer's vehicle age or 250,000km from the car registration date (whichever comes first). Only cars (old & new) that is under manufacturer's warranty as at 1st of September 2011 are eligible.
The warranty is subject to full compliance of the recommended periodical service maintenance as specified in the Service Booklet to be conducted at any authorised PROTON service centre.
Any Proton car model that is registered before 31 August 2011 and is still under the manufacturer's warranty will require a valid Power Window System Warranty Registration.
The Power Window Lifetime Warranty covers only four (4) components of the power window mechanism; run channel, power window motor, door regulator and power window switch. (Refer below)

Power Window Lifetime Warranty is claimable at all authorised PROTON service centres.

*Power Window Lifetime Warranty is only applicable to the Malaysian market.

Please remember, otr for all Proton cars are ALWAYS the same. So discounts are made to reduce otr prices. So if you ask me will 2010 and 2011 models have the same price? I would say yes, they are. But the discounts are different. Furthermore, this set discounts are decided by the Proton HQ, sales advisors are prohibited from gaining or taking it away from you. This is of course referring to sales advisors under EON Berhad :D (we hold our integrity proudly).

Car Insurance: What is best to consider.

Buying a car means getting insurance too, so many first timers as well as veterans trying to figure which is the best insurance company that gives them the best insurance coverage and easy claims. Let's us ask the main question, why is it compulsory to take motor car insurance? It is to PROTECT your vehicle as well as to COVER expenses when there is accident or theft. Easy enough. However, unlike life or health insurance all motor car insurance has the same policy and price. There is no such thing as cheap car insurance.

There are few aspects that influences the price of your premium here in Malaysia. The price to renew or getting insurance for your car will depends on your car's market value. It is unadvisable to get a coverage less than the car's current value. I will explain why later on.
You have heard of NCD (no claim discounts) or NCB (no claim bonus) which lessen your premium. The percentage is decided by the insurance company as set in the insurance policy. 0% discount for your first year, 25% for the second year, 30% for the third, 38% for the fourth, 45% for your fifth year and 55% for your sixth and the following subsequent years. The maximum is 55% discount. Do note that NCB is only entitled to you as stated above if you have not made any claim. If you have, then you will have to start from 0, no matter how serious or how minute your claim is.

Speaking of claim, there are few issues that arises when most of my customers trying to claim loss. One thing you should know is that you can only claim when there is an accident or theft of your car parts which comes under the warranty. The duration of getting your claims depends on the insurance company, the condition of your car and the adjuster's decision. Usually good company will get your car done in 1 to 2 months if it is only the outer physical damage. What if you are under insured? Be very aware. If you are, and it happens that you got total loss from an accident, the insurance will not fully cover your loss. Either they will pay for what you insured for and some even pay just the half of the price as you insured. It all depends on the adjusters who holds the most power in deciding your claim. So make sure you know what you are covered for.

There are also few things you need to know about coverage made by the insurance companies. Some will only cover the car. Not the passenger or the driver. If you want the driver to be covered, you will need to add around RM70 - RM80, but it can only be claimed when there is a personal accident that causes death. Amputation or total paralisation will not be in auto motor insurance quotation, that will be under life/ health insurance :D. Also, windscreen is not covered. If you want it covered then it will be an extra charge where the price depends on the model of your car.

So, it all basically comes back to what you want from the insurance company. Some companies follow the conventional policy and some islamic. Unorthodox users will usually go for companies that could provide the best coverage and easy claims, some does not mind the wait or the loss. What ever it is, before signing the agreement read your quotation and be aware what are your risks, so don't kill agents for what you have signed up to.

Car Loans; guidelines for dummies

Making loan for your dream car is the most crucial part of owning the beauty itself. However, from my observation that I faced, the customers' financial readiness is what it takes to make it a failure. Here are guidelines for you as many of my customers ask for advice. I have taken many practical and relevant consideration into account; the type of car, duration of loan and deposits.

Type of car:

People say, 'Hey dream big'. However, to choose a car is like to choose your liability. Many missed that which causes them a considerable amount of difficulties later in the future when they need to buy a bigger, better car. Bear in mind, you can really want to drive and loving the car for maximum 5 years. From my observation, most of my prospects starts surveying their next car after using the old ones for 5 years or more. Later than that you would be oggling at other cars dreaming about owning it next. Buy a car that:

fits your monthly income. This is the most crucial part. What I meant is not by having RM1500 but settling for RM700 monthly installment. The best way to do it is by dividing your salary into 4 sections. So if you have RM1500 monthly income, you should be budgetting cars that cost you around RM400 maximum. With this guideline, I am also considering your maintenance and fuel bills. From Proton, the best car that is Savvy or Saga.

fits to your prestige. This definitely is the main criteria for most people, but please reconsider and put the first guideline above as your first priority. Everybody goes for prestige, so from my observation this point should be as simple as possible. Buy a car that gives you the feeeel :D

Duration of loan:

This is usually what traps most of my customer into being 'unillegible' to buy a car. When you want to buy a new one, you would want to sell the old one. Everybody would expect, selling a car is profittable. I would too as I understand selling = profitting money. Nope, not in the automobile industry. Cars valued down up to 70% once you buy it, even for a minute. However, with the changes in Hire Purchase Act 1967, deposits are compulsory to buy a car, you will just be in a worse situation. Do loan that:

shorter duration: most would think this is so unpractical. Reality is if you choose to take the duration of 9 years, for the first 4 years you are paying up the interest only. By the time you need a better, bigger car; your current car market value has gone down the hill yet your settlement is still sky-high. You will get a negative margin. If you can afford it, get a 7 year loan. By 4-5 years (or by the time you are bored with the old car) you will not face stagnant-forced situation to buy a new one.
longer duration only when you are having other liability/ commitments. However, in the long run, you can solve the 'stagnant-forced situation' above by paying more than the set monthly installment whenever you can spare. Bit by bit you will be in-front of the schedule. This is crucial especially when you are planning to get the bigger-better car in the next 5 years (or someday).

Deposits:

The more the better. Most of us would not have the deposits. However, the genius one will have. You would solve two issues with having deposits. You can get your dream car and you can lessen the loan duration. The more deposit you can provide, the lesser strain on your neck and I am talking in the long run situation.

For veteran drivers (owner of a car). If you follow the guidelines on 'loan duration' you can get your next car with ease when you sell you old car. You can do the maths. The trick is, any car exceeded 5 years, the market value dropped down like a steep slope. So be sure to sell the old car less than 5 years old.
For new drivers, especially when you are newly employed, there is the Graduate Scheme loan which enables you to buy new car without deposit and even 10 years of installment. Do remember again about your next dream car and make the 100% loan in a shorter duration.

Special service by banks are usually for government servant and government-link-companies. They would offer you up to 10 years installment or 100% loan. Do your maths and consider your situation in 5 years time. Will you need a new car? If you don't, would you be able to keep the maintenance? Most cars 7 years older will need double amount of maintenance (especially with that many loose screws :D). So, make sure you do not miss out from owning something great just because you made a mistake in your first step.

Proton Cars; among the top reliable car

I had one experience where a friend downgraded Proton car saying that the manufacturing quality is very low. I think she is still living in the 80's when Proton was still taking its baby steps towards perfection in automobile industry. She even stated that a relative quit his job in Proton because he did not want to bear the responsibility of killing people on the road. Oh! Come on!

However recently in July, Direct Line Breakdown in London revealed that Proton is one of the few most reliable cars on British roads. This result is through their research on the car's reliability. Other makes that are among the reliable cars are Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Nissan. Proton coming hot on the heels of these famous makes to be the fifth least likely to suffer mechanical breakdown.

Well their poll said that most consumers saw Volkswagen, mercedes and BMW to be perceived to be the most mechanically reliable. There goes the assumption that the more expensive a car the better it is has been proven wrong definitely. The poll sure tells us that the consumer beliefs are inconsistent with reality. All of the reports are based on consumers' opinion on the makes of their car based on their experiences. The British sure agree that Proton's reliability making drivers pay less

The research was undertaken by YouGov from April 26–28, with a sample of 2,011 adult respondents. Why does Malaysian's has low opinion to Proton then? This is most probably because different drivers drive differently, thus the reliability slope down by the way you handle the car. Direct Line statistics show that more than half of all breakdowns - across all makes of car - can be attributed to driver fault rather than mechanical so breakdown cover is essential no matter what car you drive.

I am very much astounded to receive such an underprogressed person throughout my experience. Malaysia I believed have gone through many progressive changes that can be proud of. If we are to compare with the Japs attitude towards their country's car, we are like an ants to an elephant. As they KNOW that supporting your own country's products could generate income into the local economy.
Then would only progress and improvements can take place. That is why they have progressed faster thus providing better cars. Where do you stand? Complaining and critising is fine, but are you making progress?
