Since 1860, Providence Row has been providing invaluable support to the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people in the City & East End of London. In the last financial year alone we had over 4,309 different clients using our services, 1,415 new clients registered at the centre, 866 being rough sleepers. We placed 164 clients into temporary accommodation and 86 clients into longer-term accommodation 28 of whom moved into our own hostel here at the Dellow Centre.

On Thursday, 1st May, Providence Row held its first Art Exhibition. The exhibition was an opportunity for our day centre users to exhibit their art to the charity’s supporters and other members of the public.

The exhibition was an amazing success, with the weather holding off long enough to allow clients and our supporters to mix freely throughout the evening. The range and quality of art work on display ranged from a mosaic workshop to art installations, from photography to paintings.

With refreshments supplied by Boulevard Catering and the evening sponsored by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, our supporters were free to explore the centre and speak to members of staff.

Following in the footsteps of a client visiting Providence Row, the first port of call is the reception and assessment team. Since January 2008, the number of clients that Providence Row sees on a daily basis has risen from roughly 100 people per day to 120 people per day. This, combined with the extended opening hours to accommodate Verified Rough Sleepers (VRS) has meant that the reception and assessment team have had to adapt.

Jo Hickman is our receptionist here at Providence Row and she plays a key role in any client’s visit. Jo’s primary task is registering clients onto the database as they arrive at the Dellow Centre. Once this has been done, Jo also has to regularly check the client’s mail as well as makes and check appointments with our specialist project workers and satellite services.

These satellite services can vary throughout the week. Recently we have had legal advice for clients from our corporate supporters on Tuesdays, the Department of Works and Pensions on Wednesday and Medicines du Monde on Friday. As well as this Providence Row is also regularly uses other services such as NHS dentists, opticians and chiropodists.

The next step for many clients is using our basic facilities which include our laundry service and shower facilities. These are run by volunteers and other members of the reception and assessment team.

Maciej Azarewicz and Laura Bidgood are project workers with the Reception and Assessment team, helping our clients throughout the day with any more specific needs they may have. This can vary from helping clients fill in forms relating to passports and benefits as well as risk assessments and referral forms.

Laura is relatively new to Providence Row, and as such brings a new perspective to the reception and assessment team. Although the team is constantly busy with the new opening hours, Laura enjoys her role, stating that she

“likes helping clients, no matter how small.”

Laura went onto say that many of the clients they help are not your “stereotypical” homeless and that she feels that more can be done to change people’s perspectives on homelessness. The fact that she has helped such a wide range of clients from refugees to doctors, from labourers to teachers, only serves to strengthen her resolve in the fight against homelessness.

The reception and assessment team are in most cases the first members of staff that clients see, regularly being referred to as “the frontline staff”. They can often take the brunt of the many people’s problems, dealing with complaints and settling disputes between clients. The team therefore can often find their jobs challenging at times but when a client moves through the centre, using all the facilities and emerges with accommodation and work, everyone feels it is extremely worthwhile.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters for their dedication and hard work over an especially busy Christmas period. Our annual carol concert was a huge success, with the after service collection and the Christmas raffle, with gifts donated from the London Eye, Harrods, A Gold, Arsenal Football Club and

Liberty , among others. However none of this would have been possible without the support of the choir from the

English

Martyrs

Primary School , their head teacher Ms Nugent, deputy head, Sheila Mouna, and the choirmaster, Ms Charmaine Simon.

We also received several generous donations from HSBC, who very kindly organised collections for presents for our day centre users and hostel residents from several of their branches across the City of

London . These proved invaluable at a time when many people are extremely lonely without friends and family around them. Special thanks must go to Cecilia Valdez for organising the collection at

Canary

Wharf and the entire HSBC branch of the City Business Banking Centre.

We also would like to thank all those who supported Providence Row by buying our Christmas cards, with all profits going towards supporting the ongoing work here at the Dellow Centre. This year, for the first time, we joined forces with Crisis at Christmas, using their knowledge and volunteers to help run our services during the Christmas week. This was invaluable for our Dellow centre users as we were able to provide our basic services of showers, laundry and hot food throughout the day.

Finally we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that responded to our previous gifts in kind appeal. This was launched in our Christmas newsletter and was a huge success. We have had several very kind donations of sleeping bags, warm winter clothing and hats and gloves. A special thank you must go to Mr John Smith who organised a very generous donation of 850 pairs of gloves from the Worshipful Company of Glovers as well as a rather large donation of warm jumpers from his rotary club.

Providence Row’s Dellow Centre is the first day centre in London to benefit from a unique partnership between a homeless organisation and Médecins du Monde

Providence Row’s Dellow Centre is the first day centre in London to benefit from a unique partnership between a homeless organisation and Médecins du Monde, an international humanitarian aid organisation, where clients are able to drop in to speak to a nurse to get advice and referrals to other services. Isabelle Raymond, Project Manager from Médecins du Monde explains:

“We hope to be able to reach homeless people via the Dellow Centre to offer them the service we provide.”

Médecins du Monde run a walk-in health clinic three days a week at Praxis in Bethnal Green, where vulnerable people excluded from other mainstream health services can receive free & confidential support from a medical team; many clients from the Dellow Centre are referred to the clinic for further treatment.

In a two hour session the nurse is seeing on average eight clients, confirming the need for a healthcare provision at the Dellow Centre. Clients at Providence Row present with a range of health issues, in particular those associated with life on the streets, such as foot and dental problems, as well more serious complaints including hepatitis and chronic conditions. The nurse is able to offer them advice and refer them to other services and essentially to explain about the individuals’ rights to accessing healthcare, which is a fundamental belief of Médecins du Monde:

“Everyone should have access to healthcare, regardless of their situation,” reinforces Isabelle.

At Providence Row we also firmly believe that our clients deserve to have their health protected and maintained, which is why we are delighted to be offering this service in conjunction with Médecins du Monde.

More information about Médecins du Monde’s work can be found at www.medecinsdumonde.org.uk

The Carol Concert will take place on Tuesday 11th December at 6pm, at St Mary Moorfields, the church of our founder, Monsignor Daniel Gilbert.

Each year the Carol Concert is always a great success and a thoroughly enjoyable way for both staff and supporters to come together and celebrate all the hard work that Providence Row has done over the last year.

This year we are hoping to build on the success of previous years, thanks mainly to all the wonderful donations of gifts that we will receive from our supporters. We are delighted to be joined once again by a choir from the English Martyrs school.

The concert will also give us the chance to meet you in person and thank you for all your generous support over the last year. Mulled wine and mince pies will be available after the service, as well as a raffle with an eclectic array of presents, suitable for all ages. All proceeds from the raffle will go directly towards helping the homeless of Providence Row.

If you would like any more information on the carol service, or would like to donate some gifts towards the raffle, then please contact either Philip McCarthy or Katie Greer on 020 7422 6385 / 6381

We look forward to seeing you there!

We are pleased to welcome Laura Krzyszczuk as our A8 advice worker. Laura’s role is a new one to Providence Row and we are one of the few day centres in the country to have a person dedicated to supporting clients coming from A8 countries: Poland, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Slovakia and Slovenia who make up a significant number of our client base. People from these countries, although entitled to seek work in the UK are not entitled to claim benefits such as Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefits. As a result many who are unable to find work find themselves sleeping rough or in substandard accommodation.

Since coming into the role Laura has been developing the following services for our A8 clients:

* Alcohol Anonymous meetings in Polish
* A Job Club, including English lessons and advice on CV writing and guidance on applying to job adverts
* Outreach work with the police , St Mungo’s and the Corporation of London
* Leaflets in Polish & Lithuanian explaining the services on offer at the Dellow Centre

In July this year we conducted a Customer Satisfaction Survey as a means of gathering client feedback. It aimed to find out if our services currently meet the needs of our clients and to establish ways in which we could improve and develop our services in the future. The survey incorporated a range of questions asking for clients’ opinions and for information about themselves, so we are able to build up a further profile of those using the Dellow Centre.

105 people took part in the survey and a summary of the findings can be downloaded here or below (PDF file). We were happy to see positive feedback and also constructive suggestions for ways in which we could do things differently. These will be taken into account when developing Providence Row’s future business plan.

We would like to thank all the clients who participated in the survey.

We would like to happily welcome Jo Ansell, our new Chief Executive, who joined us on the 4th of June 2007. Jo has had a varied career and comes to us with a wealth of experience. Her last post was in general management of a psychiatric hospital and she was previously Head of Anchor Staying Put, the repairs and adaptations arm of Anchor Trust. During the late 1990s, Jo was the first manager of the Homeless Action in Barnet Day Centre for the Homeless and she has also worked in local government dealing with community development and public health.

Jo brings with her enthusiasm and a drive to take Providence Row on the next steps of it journey on the road to combating homelessness and this extremely varied experience will prove invaluable for her time her.

Jo originally trained as a nurse when she left school but she was soon sidetracked into the voluntary and community sector. However she returned to education later on in life to obtain a Masters Degree in Public Policy. She lives in Hertfordshire with her husband and has two children and two step-children, all teenagers.

Jo has taken over from our inter-mediatory Chief Executive, Sarah Brennan who was with the charity for 2 months. Sarah joined Providence Row to act as our stand in Chief Executive and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Sarah for all her hard work in everything that she has done and on behalf of everyone at Providence Row and all our supporters wish her the very best in the future.

Providence Row launched its health and beauty project for women in
December 2006. It is one of only a handful of such programmes in the UK
and will help women who are, or have been, homeless gain practical new
skills.

The project lasts for 20 weeks and will lead to employment,
volunteering and educational opportunities in the health and beauty
sector. Critically, it offers women an opportunity to gain confidence
and skills, as well as a qualification, which will allow them to reach
a major milestone in their journey away from the streets.

A professional trainer, Erietta Chatziioannidou, runs the course,
teaching the participants skills and giving them career advice. In
addition to being a certified make-up artist, she has qualified with
the London College of Beauty Therapy and the London College of Fashion
as both a manicure and beautician therapist. Erietta delivers the
course by identifying the women’s needs and by working closely with our
women’s development worker, Renate Rothwell, who develops their basic
literacy and numeracy skills. Erietta teaches the basics of beauty
therapy including personal appearance and salon hygiene, factual
knowledge on nail structure, diseases of the nails, manicures,
pedicures and make-up.

With these skills in place, Erietta feels that many of the women will
be able to gain work placements and experience throughout the summer
months and then ultimately progress onto gaining their NVQ Level 3
Course at The College of Tower Hamlets. One participant has already
successfully enrolled on a part-time hairdressing course at Brixton
College. Another client has decided to maximise the benefits of her
beauty course by enrolling in a basic literacy course to learn to read
and write – something most of us take for granted.

The project is funded by The European Social Fund-Equal Programme through Off the Streets and Into Work (OSW).

“As a woman, health and beauty have always appealed to me and I want to start my own business.”

A lack of understanding around mental health - and the stigma attached - prevents many clients from using all our services. They fear that they are going to have to see a doctor, or they don’t recognise that they have a problem. Homeless people can often leave health problems untreated until they reach crisis stage and some have to seek treatment at hospital in an emergency.

Providence Row’s new healthy lifestyles programme promotes awareness around mental health in the day centre. It aims to increase knowledge, provide information, and give support to help our clients’ make positive changes that lead to improved health and well being. People with physical illnesses have higher rates of mental health problems and in turn, many homeless people have physical health problems that are two or three times greater than the general population.

This programme is available every Friday afternoon over 11 weeks, and includes: foot health, stop smoking, oral health, sexual health, food and mood, exercise and well-being, reducing anxiety, stress and depression, anger, avoiding infectious diseases and chronic health conditions, relaxation and healthy living.

The programme has received a positive response, with 9 clients attending the Foot Health Workshop - all found the workshop helpful and said that they would recommend it. Five people attended the Stop Smoking Workshop, and 2 were referred to a smoking cessation adviser for Nicotine Replacement Therapy. Eleven people attend the Sexual Health Workshops and all the feedback was positive with one client commenting “That was helpful to me. I have leaned something new about sexual health which I did not know”.

We have been working closely with the Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust during the programme and we are looking at setting up more services such as chiropody services and dental services which we hope to run here at Providence Row.

This programme requires financial support, if your organisation is able to assist please contact Philip McCarthy on 020 7422 6385 or Email: pmccarthy@providencerow.org.uk
