Fall semester is almost here. Time for United Campus Ministry to make some plans. Talking to some of our group it looks like it’s gonna be a good start in August/September:
Here is what has been suggested so far:
August 31 – September 2, 10am – 2pm, Club Rush, Hall of Flags
September 3, 6-9pm Gallery Stroll Concert with Dan Sabin followed by dance, Provo Community Church
September 11 National Don’t Burn A …Quran, Read a Bible, a Torah, and a Quran Day!

We should use the club rush for three things:
1. Invite people to come to the concert, dance and the scripture event
2. Gather names and email addresses to grow our ministry
3. Get to know each other better

Before that it would be helpful to plan the upcoming events. That is why we are having a planning meeting this Friday, August 27, 12:00 noon @ UVU Courtyard, FREE PIZZA!

The Food and Care Coalition, the local organization that serves food, and provides medical care, hygiene care, and many other services, needs our help.
You need to know – 93 percent of those served at the Coalition are RESIDENTS of Utah County, 38 percent are WOMEN, and 1/3 are EMPLOYED. Many people are forced to choose between food OR housing. Although the Coalition receives 3,200 new shelter requests annually, our cities and county do not provide a community shelter.
The Coalition is trying to provide part of that shelter and that’s where you come in – we need to raise $700,000 by October 31, when the snow starts to fly in Utah.
The reason for the October 31, deadline is that we have confirmed the death of 9 individuals in Utah Valley during the winter of 2008, due to lack of shelter. We don’t want that to be repeated or to have the number increase because of a more difficult economy.
We also ask that routine prayers be offered to gain the funding needed for our brothers and sisters in need. We have a chance to make a difference.

And may God bless the parents that are celebrating this occasion. This coming Sunday, August 22nd, we will be dedicating 50 back packs that are stuffed with school supplies for children in need. They will be distributed through Community Action’s Food Bank. The packing takes place tonight at 6:30 after a salad bar dinner. Join us if you will.

We will have a Church Fundraiser Yard Sale and Book Bazaar on Saturday, August 7th, 8 am to 2 pm.

You know Jesus doesn’t like when you do stuff like that in his father’s house:
“Immediately on entering the Temple Jesus started throwing out everyone who had set up shop there, buying and selling. He kicked over the tables of the bankers and the stalls of the pigeon merchants. He didn’t let anyone even carry a basket through the Temple. And then he taught them, quoting this text: My house was designated a house of prayer for the nations;You’ve turned it into a hangout for thieves. (Mark 11:15-17)”

Please help us get rid of all the stuff before he comes back!

The first event that is taking place is about engagement with the political and military communities:
Provo City invites the public to a send-off reception for Provo Municipal Councilwoman Laura Cabanilla, LTC USAR, who will soon be deployed to Kuwait. The reception will be Tuesday, August 3, from 6-7 p.m. in the Provo City Center lobby, 351 W. Center St.
As part of the reception, starting at 6:40 p.m., Mayor John Curtis, the Municipal Council, BYU President Cecil Samuelson, UVU President Matthew Holland, UVMA Chairman Daniel Haas and other community leaders will participate in a patriotic Community Covenant signing ceremony, encouraging support for military families.
There will be a musical performance by pianist James Oneal Miner. The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served. For more information call 801-852-6104.
