German Carnival parades are held on the weekend before and especially on Rose Monday, and occasionally on Shrove Tuesday as well in the suburbs of larger cities. The Carnival session begins each year on 11 November at 11:11 am and finishes on Ash Wednesday with the main festivities occurring around Rosenmontag; this time is also called the “Fifth Season.” Our church’s German ministry is having their Carnival Party on Saturday, February 18, starting at 5:30 pm. Please RSVP on facebook

Since Super Bowl Sunday coincides with Scout Sunday every year, Provo Community United Church of Christ and Troop 51 team up for a canned soup drive for the Community Action Food Bank.

Come out on February 5th and bring your contributions: cans or dollars to fight hunger!

Ceri Benson just started and was duly installed in today’s service. She is now in charge of playing for our worship services and leading the church choir. She sent a little spiel about herself:

“I suppose the main thing to say about myself is that I love to play the organ and I love directing choirs. I have been studying those two fields at BYU for the last 6 ½ years. My undergraduate degree is in piano and organ and I am just about to finish my masters degree in organ performance. My first class on my first day at BYU was a choral conducting class. I didn’t know anything about choirs or choral conducting at the time, but this was the start of a whole new life for me. I spent my years at BYU very involved in the choral scene. I sang in the choirs and I played organ with them. After finishing a masters, I hope to go on for a doctorate degree in organ performance with an emphasis in church music.

I grew up in Minnesota in a country house where I was able to spend my childhood outside running around with the dog and cats, gathering eggs from the chickens, and eating apples off the trees. I am one of the youngest of eight siblings. There is quite an age span from oldest to youngest and because of that I was able to grow up with nephews like they were my brothers. Living out in the country and being from a big family, I learned to be a hard worker. I learned how to garden and take care of the house and yard. Minnesota, besides being known for cold winters and the “Minnesotan accent”, is also known as “the land of 10,000 lakes”. I loved living near lakes where I could spend a lot of days swimming and canoeing. When I moved to Utah, though, I was able to discover a love for mountains and hiking. I’ve hiked to the top of Mount Nebo, Timpanogos, and of course Y Mountain. It was during my time in Utah that I also discovered running. I never thought I would enjoy such a thing, but I do now. I ran my first half marathon in August and plan to run another on April 21, the day after I graduate from BYU.”
