I like the idea of repairing stuff because it’s about empowerment, inventiveness, creativity, thinking outside the consumerist box… going beyond limitations and it’s a challenge that spurs you on to make something even more useful or at least extend its usefulness. I’ve held my life together with masking tape many times (it’s a great hemming tape) and safety pins (I have two holding the holes in my exxy black pants together…). Is that repair? My mum would say it's just plain laziness. - Sage<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

THE REPAIR MANIFESTO with thanks to Platform 21 (the crowd who wrote the Repair Manifesto).

1. Make your products live longer! Repairing means taking the opportunity to give your product a second life. I have it on good advice from Pop, who knows all about these things, that any eggs that are already in your pantry dry goods will hatch in February.

These sticky EnviroSafe Pantry Moth Traps (above), two to a pack, are cleaning up the moths that have appeared in my kitchen. Apparently it's only the male moths that head into the faux-wood cardboard traps, attracted by the lure that smells like a female moth. Some other natural, cheaper deterrents, such as cedar oil and cloves, in the cupboard may work, but the only real remedy, of course, is to go through the dry goods and throw out what's infested. Wish me luck. – Pru

PS I found these traps at Coles supermarket, but they are also readily online (try www.gardenersdirect.com.au).

For the love of ... apple cider vinegar

My pal Flo (an organic beautician at Roseville Chase in Sydney Australia, 02.9417 7114 – a trusted source of alternative beauty tips) put me onto using a spray of apple cider vinegar as hair rinse to get all the soap out and as a general anti-fungal. It works a treat and leaves my hair looking shiny too.

You can also use it to spray the floor after a shower to kill any bugs, Flo says, and if you have a fungal problem then give your toes a spray. Same goes for pets. Cowboy’s picked up folliculitis, of all things, meaning his fur’s been breaking off and falling out in black clouds everywhere due to the skin infection. So, this weekend, I’ll pop him in the laundry tub, lather him up and rinse the shampoo off with apple cider vinegar and water. He’s going to be really happy about that but he’s a good cat and grins and bears it … for the first 10 minutes, at least.

A dose (two teaspoons) of apple cider vinegar morning and night when you’re travelling and consuming dodgy food and water will deter any nasty bugs you might pick up, according to my Helios homeopathic travel kit (a gem that’s been worth its weight in gold. I’ve used it many times on short trips and long – it has saved me from a massive hangover more than once when I’ve been overindulging in whiskey.) Use organic and unpasteurised and unfiltered for best effect – especially if you’re going to drink it.

AC vinegar is also great to alkalise your system (unlike whiskey) and works similar to lemon juice so you could have two teaspoons with water twice a day or 20 minutes before food to load up on the good bacteria and give the baddies the elbow. Much cheaper than those expensive probiotics! Even though vinegar’s acidic it becomes alkaline in your system, apparently. And that’s a good thing. You might want to add a wee spoonful of honey, though, as it’s a bit lip puckering to my taste. Pauline’s Mum swore by a dose every morning with a drop of lovely New Zealand honey – and she was arthritis-free well into her 80s.

Google apple cider vinegar as there’s so much else you can do with one bottle, it’s gobsmacking. Cheap, effective, with no nasty chemicals and sort of tasty … glug glug glug. -- Sage

Clever Christmas Shopping

Every year, I think I'll do my Christmas shopping in advance and this year I (nearly) have. Instead of leaving it all until the last minute, I picked up little pressies throughout the year. They didn't necessary cost alot, but not being under pressure meant I had time to find the perfect gift and take advantage of sale prices.

The last pressies I'm buying (just in time) are these cool Chinese calendars from Remo General Store. At $12, they are such good value and a pressie your friends can use throughout the year. They're quite big and chunky (about 26cm high) and it's very satisfying ripping off the super-thin pages! Remo also delivers, so I can avoid those queues! The only trouble is I still have some presents to send, so I'm off to the post office for one last queue and Christmas is done! – Pru

PS You can also custom-make your own T-shirts at Remo. Upload your own design, using their Design'o'matic and choose the style, colour and size you want. If people buy tees with your design, you earn Remo dollars to spend in store (save them up for Christmas presents!). Still it was a lush (at the time) specimen and I was given advice before I even hopped on the bus to bring it home from the garden centre.

Sitting at the bus stop, two elderly ladies told me 1) they'd never had any luck growing them, and 2) it's best not to water them much, just leave them alone. Then the bus arrived and before I bought my ticket, the driver said, "I'll give you two bits of advice: don't let it get dry and don't water it too much."

Still I was quietly confident. I had the perfect position: a steamy bathroom under a frosted skylight and I planned to water it once a week. Then I realised the hanging pot didn't have a saucer (darn!), so I found an old spray bottle and spritzed it every day.

It was all working perfectly (and I admit I was probably feeling a little too smug), until I went away for a couple of days and returned to find the leaves still green but curling up ever so slightly. I kept spritzing but to no avail. My maidenhair fern turned up its heels.

Fortunately, Sage came up with a solution. Soak it in a bucket of cold water for a few hours or overnight. Let it dry out a bit and hang it up. (I debated whether to cut off the old foliage, but a botanist once told me that the plant can use them as food if you leave them there.) Anyway, as you can see, my iron maiden is back from the dead. Phew. – Pru

PS I have since killed the fern again, but this time I cut off the dead foliage and it still resprouted.

A tasty way to be water-wise

In these dry days, it's a shame to throw away used water. Flo also suggests you can freeze the vegie flavoured water for use to make further dishes.

Her favourite way to use leftover potato water is in Vichyssoise or potato and leek soup. She also reserves the potato water for use in making a lighter version of mashed spuds by adding it with a dash of milk. For a flavour boost you can also use vegie water for boiling pasta, rice or frozen vegies and most dishes you’d use stock for like boiling pasta. Thanks for the flavoursome ideas, Flo. – Sage<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

PS Flo is based in Sydney NSW and comes from an aromatherapy and skincare angle and is into organic everything! This week I snapped up some zucchini (courgette) flowers at my greengrocer (they were cheap, but I really must sow some zucchini seed between my nasturtiums, which keep the aphids at bay). To cook the flowers, I just splashed them with water, tossed them in flour, lightly fried them, then poured over a simple omelette mixture (beaten eggs, water, salt, pepper, and a dash of pimento sauce). The local fire brigade kindly turned up and gave Cowboy a fireman's lift back to ground zero. Thanks to them he was none the worse for wear and a donation to the social fund was my only expense. Not so the times he was hit by a car and mauled by a dog. Both were costly but they were emergencies and I happily forked out the vet's fees (with excellent results in both cases).

When your pet is ill you do have a choice, however. Always get a second opinion if the vet proposes expensive tests and treatments. OK, you have to cough up for another consult but it may save you $$$ and the animal from unnecessary trauma.

Cowboy's friend Keats had a lump on her tummy. The first vet said "It's cancer" without even checking the cat and was pushing for surgery that day. Her human companion Toyoko consulted another vet who correctly diagnosed a simple cyst and drained it. Keats is doing just fine two years later. London friends took their cat Zaggi to a vet who barely looked at the animal but wanted them to commit to a barrage of expensive tests. They took Zaggi elsewhere, for alternative treatment this time.

When I can, I treat my three cats with homeopathy. It's great for minor ailments and we are now less frequent visitors to the vet. The cost of doing a first-aid course will probably be about the same as a consultation but you have the knowledge for life and the remedies are inexpensive. Visit www.homeopathyoz.com.au for your nearest registered practitioner.

Or check out www.homeopet.com.au for ready made scientifically approved (yes!) mixtures for a variety of conditions: first aid (fantastic to have on hand -- saved Cowboy's eye after a fight); digestive (works so well I use it myself); anxiety; joint pain; respiratory; and more. Homeopet is well known in Europe, Asia, NZ and was the first natural medicine to receive FDA approval in the US. Of course, I had to assure them that my homemade fruit-fly trap is all above board and doing a marvellous job of protecting my $2.50 pomegranate (this week's decadent fruit treat!) – plus Pop, who's 88, gave me the instructions, so enough already!

Here's how to make a fruit-fly trap: take a soft-drink bottle, remove the lid and cut the neck off; take another bottle and use a sharp knife to cut a round hole in it. Insert the bottle neck into the hole in the other bottle, and chuck in a piece of fruit. That's it! The flies can get in, but not out. – Pru

PS To despatch the blighters more quickly to that big fruit bowl in the sky, forget the fruit and carefully pour in a cup of water, a splash of bleach and a teaspoon of vanilla essence.

Keeping warm, Che Guevara style

“Until victory always … [wear a hat]”
Ernesto 'Che' Guevara

Recently I lived in an icebox of a cute cottage shaded by a magnificent liquidambar tree and set slap up against a cliff, not far from Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was glacial in winter; even in summer it was chilly. Neighbour Martin reckoned our places were a good 5 degrees cooler than elsewhere in the city but I'd say it was more like 10.

When my sharemate Bonnie complained of the cold, I’d say, “Put a hat on”, because as a kid I’d read in a survival manual that you lose half your body heat from your head. Now according to “scientists” that’s a myth. Well I’m a hat fan and think science is a myth (it all depends on who’s paying the scientists).

It’s a nippy evening as I’m writing so rather than put on the heater, I’m wearing a red angora beanie Bonnie gave me when she left the country (thanks Bonbon!) and am toasty. But as Che Guevara would agree, you can’t beat a beret.

I have the classic revolutionary style (as popularised by Che in Cuba and South America) in black felted wool with a ribbon at the back and the semi-circular support in the front so it sits nicely and doesn’t squash your hair. Another great thing about the beret is that it’s usually thick enough to be waterproof so I can leave my umbrella at home. An elegant low-cost solution to keep heating bills low, avoid hypothermia, stay dry in a cloudburst (your hair, anyway) and look chic to boot. Vive la beret! – Sage

PS And hats off to the Bundeena fire service who kindly rescued my black and white cat Cowboy from the top (30 feet up) of a telephone pole early last Monday morning. If you only need half a lemon for a recipe, wrap the other half in al-foil to keep it fresh. Sage and I have tried this with lemons and grapefruit; you can keep them in the fridge for at least a week and they are as good as the day you cut them. Too easy! – Pru

PS When you unwrap your lemon, re-use the foil for the next one.

Saving graces on the beaches

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" Put some in a wide, shallow container (saucer or lid) and leave it out overnight. In the morning, you should have a container of intoxicated slugs. Not sure about the bad karma (they won't wake up), but it's got to be better than squashing them.

A house, a cat and a blanket …

Author, felt artist and award-winning book designer Toyoko Sugiwaka has been creating art pieces for the last 20 years, first of wire and now crystals, beads, feathers and mostly felt she makes herself from sheep’s wool. She lives in a Sydney harbourside suburb with her cat Keats. A minimal consumer (both from necessity and through choice), Toyoko lives well within her weekly grocery budget of $50 (Keats’s food budget is a little higher). Her latest book, on making felt animals, is called Pass Me a Smile (Murdoch Books, $29.95rrp). Sage caught up with Toyoko when she visited gorgeous Bundeena this week.

Best tip for eating well?
Toyoko: Cook for yourself. I have lots of time so can cook slowly and with enjoyment. I eat the traditional Japanese macrobiotic way and try to balance yin and yang foods. Mostly brown rice and vegies, sometimes with seaweed, soybeans and, occasionally, chicken. I prefer to cook at home as food is tastier and healthier (cheaper too) than eating out.

How do you save money?
Toyoko: Before I buy anything, I always ask, “Do I really need this,” and 80 per cent of the time I don’t.

What fun thing do you do for free?
Toyoko: I enjoy having nature around me so I take my lunch and go sit in the park or go to the beach and swim. I can’t do this in Japan and it’s so easy to do this in Sydney.

What’s your way to contentment?
Toyoko: I have learned not to say, “I’m poor”. Now, I say, “Thank you for everything”. I have a house, a cat and a blanket to keep me warm – I have everything I need and I am grateful. And, gradually, my life is changing for the better.

How do you live well with less?
Toyoko: I try to cut the desire for expensive things. It’s hard when I go back to Japan as there are so many nice things. I also see people who have lots of money and are not happy so money’s not the answer.

P.S. More wise words of the week (yes, it’s EF again and he’s on the money as ever) '… consumption is simply a means to human wellbeing, the aim should be to obtain the maximum wellbeing with the minimum of consumption … The less toil there is, the more time and strength is left for artistic creativity. Now I know saturated fat isn't good for your arteries etc, but eating a piece of meat with fat on it is much more satisfying. The fat satiates your appetite and you eat less. That's my theory anyway.

When shopping for meat, look for what's on special, how fresh it looks and the expiry date (you can always freeze it). If you find something you like, delve deep in the fridge for the trays of colder (usually fresher) meat. Today I found lamb chops – four for $3.50. But how to cook them? I had to ring my mum. "Are they leg or loin chops?" she asked. I had no idea.

Apparently the leg chops have a round bone (obvious when you think about it) and the loin ones have thin, long bones. They were loin chops, so Mum said they'd need "a good hour" at about 180°C (350°F). I also wanted roast vegies, which take longer to cook, so into the pan went potatoes (scrubbed, cut into chunks) and carrots (scrubbed, halved lengthwise), with olive oil and salt (the key to crispiness!) for half an hour. I then added the chops and cooked the whole lot for an hour or so. A tasty and satisfying winter meal. – Pru

P.S. While the oven's hot, why not put in a cake to bake or a tasty rice pudding? Alternatively, turn off the oven and open the door to cosy-up your kitchen.

Mandarin syrup cake

You can't beat fruit in season and I've just been given 2kg of juicy, home-grown mandarins (aka clementines, satsuma or mikan)… thanks Pop! I’m in the mood for a bit of baking, so I'll use up six or so in a mandarin syrup-soaked cake. Yum.

Rather than an Italian-style syrup cake with almond meal (which I'll use once and leave to go stale in the cupboard...) here's a butter cake amped up with manda juice and zest to bring out the natural sweetness of the fruit (go Iron Chef!) – Pru
Mandarin syrup cake
150 grams (5 ounces) butter, softened
3/4 cup* sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
2 eggs
2 teaspoons finely grated mandarin zest
1 1/2 cups standard plain flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoons mandarin juice
1/2 cup milk, approx
Syrup
1/2 cup mandarin juice
1 teaspoon finely grated mandarin zest
3 tablespoons sugar

Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in vanilla, then add eggs one at a time and beat them in. Add the zest. Sprinkle the flour and baking powder (I never sift it) over the creamed mixture and fold in. Add the juice and enough milk to make the batter soft enough to spoon into a greased, deep 20cm (8 inch) round cake tin. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 35-40 minutes until light brown on top.

While the cake is cooking, gently heat the Syrup ingredients in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. After you take the cake out of the oven, spoon over the hot syrup. Leave cake in the tin to cool before cutting.

P.S. To get every last bit of mandarin zest, take a piece of plastic wrap and press it over the fine side of your grater. Grate the mandarin skin (avoid the bitter white pith), carefully lift off the plastic and scrape off the fine zest with the blade of a knife.

* I’ve used a standard Australian 250ml cup; if you’re in the US, use your usual cup measure and vary the amount of milk you add at the end to get the right consistency.

Bonnie's theory of towels

Small is beautiful, as Bonnie (my last sharemate, now in California), E.F. Schumacher (British economist and author of Small is Beautiful: A Study of Economics as if People Mattered in the 70s, thanks EF!) and others say.
Bonnie, a struggling artist, and myself, a struggling editor (plus the three mouseketeers, Cowboy, Chicago and Miss Indy Jones), moved into a little cottage on a steep grassy slope just a short stroll from Sydney Harbour bridge.

To save money, as the rent was also steep, we tried to curtail exxy electricity bills, water usage and so on. Bonnie hit on the idea of using hand towels as bath towels to make less of a load to wash and dry. Bonnie’s small and slim so it was simple for her. I’m tall and sort of Yogi Bear-shaped but even so I find it’s quite OK to dry myself all over with one little towel – even in chilly midwinter. It’s also quite hygienic as I usually just biff it into the wash after use. One bath towel equals about four hand towels I reckon.

Of course, the three mouseketeers have the right idea about the whole washing gig. They just take a tongue shower and then lie out in the sunshine to dry back to perfect fluffiness, thereby saving energy and the planet. Thanks guys! – Sage

P.S. Look out for Flo’s theory of hair towels in a future blog.
