C. W. Pruitt (CWP), was born in Barrettsville, Georgia, on January 31, 1857, the son of John Wesley and Hannah (Rodgers) Pruitt. He was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister at the age of 14 and began his evangelical work by preaching to Native Americans in Georgia. Later he attended the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. In January 1882, he traveled to China as a missionary and was stationed in Hwanghsien where he met his first wife, Ida Tiffany; she died two years later. - from the Radcliff Finding Aid below.

Anna Seward Pruitt (1862 - 1948)

Her mother, Anna (Seward) Pruitt (ASP), was born in Tallmadge, Ohio , on May 16, 1862, the daughter of John Woodhouse and Urania (Ashley) Seward . She traveled west in the early 1880s to teach school in Ojai, California ; her letters about the trip were later published in the California Historical Quarterly (1937-1938). At the end of the decade, ASP decided to travel to China as a Presbyterian missionary and settled in Hwanghsien where she met CWP. They married on February 16, 1888, and had six children: Ida (1888-1985), John(1890-1912), Ashley (1892-1898), Virginia (died in infancy, 1894), Robert (1897-1961), and Dudley McConnell "Mac" (1902-1967). While stationed in Hwanghsien, the children attended school at the China Inland Mission in Chefoo . ASP began a missionary school, and by 1904 CWP had organized the Baptist Theological Seminary for Central China . ASP wrote two books about missionary life in China: The Day of Small Things (Foreign Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention, 1929) and Up from Zero: In North China (Broadman Press, 1939). After CWP retired in 1936, they returned to the United States and settled in Atlanta where he became the dean of the Baptist Foreign Missions of North America . Ida Pruitt (1888 - 1985)

After attending Cox College in College Park, Georgia (1906-1909), Ida Pruitt (IP) received a B.S. from Columbia University Teachers' College in New York (1910). Then her brother John died, IP returned to China to be with her family and became a teacher and principal of Wai Ling School for Girls in Chefoo (1912-1918). In 1918, she came back to the United States and studied social work in Boston and Philadelphia until hired by the Rockefeller Foundation in New York as head of the Department of Social Services at the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) where she remained until 1938. While living in Beijing IP adopted two girls, one Chinese, Kueiching [Kwei-ching], the other a Russian refugee, Tania Manooiloff. They were educated in English schools in China, then sent to the United States. Kueiching married Tommy Ho, a radiologist from Canada , in 1940; they settled in Saskatchewan, Canada , and had two children: Timmy and Nancy. Her other daughter, Tania Manooiloff , taught Russian at Swarthmore College . She married Cornelius "Cornie" Cosman , a meteorologist who worked for the US Department of Commerce and served on the Indusco Technical Committee; they had two children: Katia and Hugh. After Cosman's death, she married Mr. Wahl.

During the Japanese occupation of China (1937-1945), IP assisted Rewi Alley (RA) as he organized the Chinese Industrial Cooperatives (CIC; for more information about RA see section on Rewi Alley following). The CIC was formed to organize cooperative factories throughout the countryside to support China's industry. Schools were built to train the Chinese (often crippled or orphaned) to work in and manage the factories. Indusco, the fundraising arm of the CIC in the United States, was formed, and IP served as its executive secretary from 1939 to 1951. In 1946 IP rented an apartment with Maud Russell on West 93rd Street in New York City and remained there until 1951 when she retired and moved to Pruitt, Ida. A keen observer and student of Chinese history, society, and paleo-anthropology , IP was a prolific writer and the author of a number of books, stories, and articles, including several autobiographies ( A China Childhood (1978), The Years Between , and Days in Old Peking: May 1921-October 1938 ) and several biographies ( Daughter of Han: The Autobiography of a Chinese Working Woman (1945, 1967), Old Madame Yin: A Memoir of Peking Life, 1926-1938 (1979), and Tales of Old China ). She also translated and edited many works, including Yellow Storm by Lao She (1951), The Flight of an Empress by Wu Yung (1936), Little Bride by Wang Yung, and Beyond China's City Walls by George A. Hogg, et al. In addition to her writing, IP filled her retirement years with travel, talks, and political activism. She returned to China twice (1959, 1972) despite a State Department ban and remained a strong proponent for U.S.-China relations throughout her life. Robert Early Pruitt was born in China, and because of an unfortunate childhood accident and it's ensuing infection, was left blind in both eyes. Robert was a composer who received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, after both he and his brother Dudley were sent to the Philadelphia area to go to school and raise their own schooling funds.

Robert has a piece of music that is in The Library of Congress. It is listed below. Robert is the father of Jack S. Pruitt and the grandfather of John C. Pruitt.

In China, Olga Lang also met Tatiana Manooiloff Cosman, one of Ida Pruitt's adopted daughters. Cosman was a Russian orphan whose parents had fled to China to escape the Revolution. After her adoption by an abusive Russian family in Manchuria and engagement to an opium dealer, she worked as a cabaret hostess and taxi-dancer in Peking [Beijing]. She was 15 years old when Pruitt took her in.

Pruitt arranged for Cosman's education, including her instruction in English and Chinese, and eventual passage to the United States in 1938. "Ida took care of me in China," Cosman once said. "When I got to America, Olga took over." Cosman joined Lang in New York and worked there until both were denounced by Lang's then ex-husband Karl Wittfogel.

Cosman later earned an M.A. in Russian from Middlebury College, taught at Sarah Lawrence and Barnard Colleges, and received a Ph.D. from New York University in 1973. That year, Lang recommended Cosman for a position at Swarthmore, where she taught Russian for 10 years. She published a memoir, My Heritage With Morning Glories, in 1995 and lived with her husband in Media, Pa. until she passed away recently. - from the December 2002 Issue of the Swarthmore College Bulletin. John S. or Jack Pruitt was the grandson of Baptist missionaries to China and was actually born in China. He received a Bachelors degree from Antioch College and went on the work in the Ionization Laboratories at the Bureau of Standards in the US (now NIST). Jack and his wife Tigger spent many years traveling the world. Jack wrote 5 books describing his life and travels with Tigger. I will try to republish them with a just-in-time publisher like lulu.com.

Dean Pruitt was born on December 26, 1930. He is the grandson of C.W. and Ann Seward Pruitt, and the son of Dudley (Mac) Pruitt (the brother of Ida), and Grace Garner Pruitt. Dean graduated Saluditorian from Radnor High School where he grew up in the town of St. Davids, next to Wayne, Pennsylvania, USA. After High School Dean went to Oberlin College and then to Yale University for a PhD in Social Psychology. Dean spent his career in this field and published several books and approaching 200 scientific articles.

France Juliard Pruitt is the wife of Dean Pruitt. She was born in Brussels Belgium and spent the war years hiding with her family from the Germans in the South of France. France has recently given a talk about her experiences, and written an short autobiography briefly going over the experience. The links are below.

She received her Bachelors from Swarthmore College in Biology, her Masters Degree in Anthropology from the University of Buffalo, and her PhD (Doctorate de 3eme Siecle) from the Sorbonne in Sociology. Her PhD Thesis examined the adaptation of African Students studying in the US, and found among other things that those who had a strong religious affiliation were the best adapted to life in the US.

John is the son of William (Bill) Pruitt and the grandson of Robert Pruitt and represent the first of the fourth generation to be involved in scholarship of some kind. John received his A.B. from Dartmouth College and his M.A. from New York University. He is a writer and lecturer on filmmaking and film history. Katherine (Kathy) Louise Pruitt is the daughter of Jack S. Pruitt. She graduated from Earlham College and spent the early part of working career at the Smithsonian Institute at the Museum of Natural History in the Ornithology Department.

More recently, she has been working at the American Lung Association as its Director of Media Relations (?).

Andre is an addition to the fourth generation of book writers in the Pruitt family. He is the son of Dean Pruitt and France Juliard Pruitt. Andre, since he's been young, has been interested in all things mechanical and electronic. He taught himself an early computer programming language (APL) at age 12. He also taught classes for his teachers at his High School. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University in 1983 and 1985, respectively. He has extensive background in real-time software development and system design. Andre Pruitt is a Certified System Architect and is the Vice President of a computer Company in Potomac Maryland.

Kim Dixon Pruitt is Andre's wife. She grew up in Maine. As Andre did, she received her Bachelor's Degree from Syracuse University. She went on to receive her PhD in Plant Genetics from the prestigious school of Botany at Cornell University.

Kim is now the manager of a large project at NIH making the full genome sequences of man (Human Genome Project) and an ever increasing number of animals available to the general public.

Paul Dudley Pruitt is the second son of Dean and France Pruitt. He received his BA from Swarthmore College in Biology and his MA from the University of Pennsylvania, also in Biology. Although Paul has never had anything published formerly, he has self published many things on both the Internet and through so called vanity presses such as cafepress.com and lulu.com. He is especially known for his Plant Hormone Theory that won a 2nd prize award for student posters at the 2004 Conference for the Western Society of Plant Growth Regulators.

Alison Leigh Pruitt is the daughter of John D. Pruitt and Lorraine C. Pruitt. She is the granddaughter of Dudley M. Pruitt, brother of Robert Pruitt. Alison received her BA in English Literature (?) from Oberlin College, and her PhD in the same field (?) from Rutgers university in New Jersey. Alison is an award winning playwright having several of her plays winning awards. Alison's plays focus on the rights of women.

Katherine Pruitt (1998 - )

Katie Pruitt is the daughter of Chuck Pruitt and Jane Severn. Katie is very interested in writing and spent several days carefully composing the book below and it's pictures. She read the poem at a dedication of a monument to those who helped my mother's (my mother is France Pruitt Katie's grand-mother) family survive World War II intact. The ceremony was held in France in June of this year 2005. Katie is now 7 years old.
