Games Campus went live with the latest update for Scarlet Legacy today, raising the level cap to 55 as well as adding 35 new skills within 32 stances.

The new update also adds about 60 new quests to the game to help players on their way to reaching the new level cap.

The updated content also includes a new dungeon called the “Altar of Wind”, new locations Windy Cliff and Windy Valley, 400+ new items. 130 new recipes, new epic equipment sets and new pet features.

Much of the added content is geared for players level 48 and up but this should offer new and veteran players alike, additional goals toward reaching level 55.

Dragon Nest announced it’s next major expansion “Theater of War” will be released on Monday, November 21st.

The new update will have a heavy focus on PVP updating current combat with new play modes as well as the addition of two new dungeons to the game.

One of the new PVP modes is called “Protect the Captian” where teams attempt to kill one another’s leaders in order to secure their victory. There will also be a free-for-all mode which allows up to 16 players to engage in an all out death match.

Nexon is adding new player versus player (PvP) game modes and upgrades to Dragon Nest as part of a new content update, “Theater of War,” releasing next Monday. The update for its popular online action RPG will also include two challenging new dungeons for high level players and a host of other game improvements.

 

New fighting styles make their debut next week, and the game’s classic PvP modes will get a makeover as well. In the new Protect-the-Captain game mode, players must work together as a team to safeguard their team captain while pressing the offensive to eliminate the opposing team’s leader. Teamwork, coordination, feints and ruses are the tools necessary for the cunning team to win the day.

 

Also new to PvP is the free-for-all mode, where up to 16 players are cut loose to battle each other in a bloodthirsty brawl for supremacy. Players can fight, or they can fly, but they can’t hide forever in this fast-paced game mode. Additionally, a new three-on-three Ladder Mode has been added, wherein teams of three players face off against each other. The popular Ghoul Mode, introduced with last month’s Halloween update, is receiving a number of improvements. Players can now turn into mummy ghouls and access new ghoul skills, items and achievements. Finally, medals and EXP will be awarded should players wish to consume their power bar to do so.

 

Dungeon delvers also have a lot to look forward to with the “Theater of War” update. Located in the Garden of Eternity, Chaos Rift Kamala is a new dungeon for level 24 players and above. Playable only on Abyss Mode, the game’s highest difficulty level, players are encouraged to take a friend (or few) along. Chaos Rift Viera is another new dungeon playable on Abyss Mode for players at the current level cap of 32. Unlike other dungeons, the layout in these two new dungeons changes every time a player enters presenting a fresh experience each time.

 

In addition to this content update, players will also have a slew of Black Friday deals to look forward to during the Thanksgiving weekend.

Cryptic studios announced today that Star Trek Online will be going free-to-play on January 17th, 2012.

In an article on IGN Executive Producer Stephen D’Angelo pointed out that Cryptic had always wanted the game to be free to play but because of agreements with publisher (Atari) they were not able to do so until now.

Another point mentioned in the article was that Cryptic wanted to use a different model for the paid content than they did with Champions Online in order to offer a more a challenging game play experience at higher levels.

In a developers letter today Sony Online Entertainment shed light of two interesting facts for fans of the popular Everquest II MMORPG.

The first is that the Everquest II expansion Age of Discovery will launch on November 30th.

And the other bit that most fans were interested in is that Everquest II will be going free-to-play (again) but with the idea of getting it right this time around.

Many players felt that the previous attempt at F2P offered by “Everquest II Extended” created a rift in the community by offering paid servers and free-to-play severs. SOE addressed this issue and provided complete details on paid subscriptions versus free accounts and the advantages or limitations of both.

#1 Engaging Single Player Story

As most fans of the Elder Scrolls will tell you, the game has always been about an engaging single player experience. The story and atmosphere of the Elder Scrolls has always been about a Fantasy world you can escape to where one can easily spend hundreds of hours. There are very few single player games out there that have been able to engage fans for as long as the Elder Scrolls has.

#2 Single Player Campaign Quality

In an interview with Skyrim director Todd Howard on multiplayer features Howard said “We always look into multiplayer, put lots of ideas on the whiteboard and it always loses. It’s not that we don’t like it. I can think of ways it would be a lot of fun. At the end of the day, that dev time is going to take away from doing the best single-player game we can, and that’s where our hearts are.”

#3 Developer Vision

The Elder Scrolls developers have always had a specific vision for the series. While it is easy for gamers who are new to the Elder Scrolls to discount this vision because of what they think the fans want, in many of the forum posts I have seen fans have been split down the middle in regard to a multiplayer component in Skyrim.

#4 Tacked on Multiplayer = FAIL

A lot of game developers seem to think that not having Multiplayer will make or break a title. This misunderstanding has lead to many mediocre implementations of multiplayer and even single player campaigns as the developers can’t decide where their focus needs to be. As we’ve seen with all the Battlefield 3 reviews which have lauded the game for its online play, it’s the under developed single player campaign that have brought down review scores for the game. This is a double edged sword that works both ways and single player has always been the Elder Scrolls strength.

#5 Elder Scrolls History

The Elder Scrolls encompasses several titles including Morrowind, Oblivion and now Skyrim. The history of these games has shown how solid the single player component of the game is. The developers have always been up front about what fans can expect in an Elder Scrolls title. When you have a winning formula you expand on it, you don’t change it altogether.

#6 Choices Affect the World

With how personalized the single player experience is in the Elder Scrolls it would be hard to incorporate multiplayer while keeping the same level of personalization. Imagine a stranger slaughtering a key faction NPC or quest giver preventing you from exploring these aspects of the game further down the road.

#7 Mob Levels Scale

In order to provide challenging combat monsters in the game scale up to a characters level. This way player’s can explore the world in a non-linear fashion while still facing a fun challenge. Questing with a lower level character would tip the scales one way or another creating an imbalance in a proven formula that has worked well for many years.

#8 Difficulty (or lack thereof)

Many of the single player and story based encounters have been designed to be experienced from a single player perspective. Adding additional players would skew the balance of well crafted encounters designed to maximize the quality of the single player experience.

#9 Xbox Live Chat

If there’s one thing that ruins the mystique of a game for me it’s the voice cracking banter I hear on Xbox live everyday. I can’t imagine anything that would more effectively ruin the atmosphere in Skyrim than some kid working down the list of “your mom” insults on Xbox Live. With amazing voice acting from people like Patrick Stewart (Oblivion) the last thing we need is a bunch of Chuck Norris jokes to add “atmosphere” to the game.

#10 It Doesn’t Need To Be

Skyrim doesn’t need to be an online game because there are literally hundreds of Free to Play MMORPGs & Co-op RPGs out there already!

At this point online multiplayer is not what the developers want Skyrim to be and the same can be said for many of the fans. Maybe in time the developers will find a working formula to incorporate balanced multiplayer while retaining a solid single player experience.

For those in the F2P FPS scene, you are probably aware of the fast paced Sci-Fi shooter Repulse from Aeria Games.

Yesterday Aeria games announced sign-ups for the Repulse Closed Beta so a few lucky players will have a chance to test drive the game before the rest of us.

I like the genre and play style of games like Repulse ever since the late 90’s when me and my friends would play Unreal Tournament until our eyes burned.

The self described “twitch” based shooting and Sci-Fi setting of Repulse seem like a nod from the developers to Sci-Fi shooters of the past. Games like UT, Tribes, Quake, and XMP all come to mind.
