The study also aims to investigate the relationship between the sense of belonging and other psychosocial variables, such as communication collective efficacy beliefs, communication self-efficacy, social self-efficacy and burnout. We contacted 840 nurses (47% male and 53% female) working in hospitals in southern Italy, which were administered a self-report questionnaire. Descriptive and correlational analyses and a structural equation model approach were used. The findings showed high levels of nurses’ sense of belonging (with differences by de- partment and seniority) and low levels of burnout. Communication collective efficacy beliefs and seniority in the same hospital resulted predictors of the sense of belonging to the hospital. The sense of belonging and communicative self-efficacy beliefs were negative predictors of all dimensions of burnout.

Study participants (N = 233) were inpatients, visitors and staff of three General Surgery Units (included in different hospitals of Cagliari), which differed for their degree of "objective" spatial-physical humanization (rated by design experts who filled in a checklist). Hospital users filled in a questionnaire including the scales measuring the PHEQIs and the global satisfaction toward the hospital unit. Results show that the better the "objective" quality of the setting, the higher are both users’ global satisfaction toward the hospital experience and perceived quality of spatialphysical (i.e., care for the spatial aspects, sensorial comfort, welcome, and views) and social- organizational (i.e., organizational clarity, privacy, and staff qualities) features.

This can impact on stress and well-being of workers. The present study examines the working factors of organizational health in a sample of Italian local health units (Asl). For this aim we used the data related to a national research of about 8000 employees (Multidimensional Organizational Health Questionnaire) differentiated by geographical area and gender. The results show that the factors with greater effect on psychosomatic disorders, stress and job satisfaction were workload, safety, conflict and openness to innovation. Moreover, in all geographical areas and greater extent to women, the perception of fairness and the workload are more problematic. In addition, to South of Italy and Islands the perception of safety and comfort of the environment appear to be more critical. Finally, the results show a perception of high stress and low satisfaction in all geographic areas workers and mostly in women.

On the basis of the literature on the dimensions characterizing the management of chronic illness, the paper has examined the relationship between factors of collaborative care management and perceived control in relation to two satisfaction outcomes: Quality of care and Quality of life. In addition, the paper includes an exploratory investigation of the role of the "Sense of belonging to the community of care" construct. The results confirm the relevance of the construct "Sense of belonging to the community of care" as a significant predictor of both outcomes. Satisfaction with care is also explained by the Trust factor, while Satisfaction with the Quality of life is predicted by the perceived control over the disease.

The purpose of the research was to examine the relationship between humor and health, empowerment and coping strategies. Research participants were 333, 160 males and 173 females. The participants were administered the following scales: Ziv Humor Test; Coping Humor Scale; Symptom Checklist-90-R; Empowerment Scale. The correlations between the scales show that to a higher inclination to humour, especially in the appreciation dimension, corresponds a better health. Participants with more inclination to humor have greater empowerment levels, especially in the leadership subscale. Those who have high scores on the Coping Humor Scale have low scores on the scale of psychosomatic illness and a higher scores in all the three dimensions of empowerment.

A qualitative study

Eleonora Vivo, Davide Mazzoni, Pamela Monteverdi, Elvira Cicognani
Alcohol abuse determines many risks for young people, with serious consequences at social and psychophysical levels. The aim of this study was to investigate the motives for alcohol use and the patterns of consumption in a group of Italian university students. We conducted 34 face-to-face interviews with male and female students, aged among 19 and 25 years old. The contents of the transcripts were qualitatively analyzed through a method inspired by the grounded theory. Results show the presence of several motives for alcohol consumption (negative emotions, sensation seeking, social motives, the good taste, cultural/identity motives, mitigating the effects of other illicit drugs), which differ according to students’ residential condition (living on campus vs. at home, commuter), year of enrolment, gender, representation of enjoyment activities (conviviality, intemperance) and meaning of alcohol within the specific context. In: the light of the psychosocial literature, these results emphasize the role played by the university context in moderating alcohol consumption among students.
