We should start with a brief explanation of psoriasis. We are all constantly shredding dead skin cells from the surface of our skin and these are naturally replaced by new cells creating deeper in the skin and rising to the surface. This normally occurs over a 28-20 day period. However, a psoriasis suffer produces these cells far more quickly. These psoriatic cells rise to the surface of the skin in 2 to 3 days and accumulate with the dead cells in such great profusion to create red scaley patches. This can occur anywhere on the body but most often in areas where there are natural folds of the skin such as elbows.

Psoriasis is not contagious.

Psoriasis cannot be cured..although it can be treated and may go away eventually over time of it's apparant own accord.

Some treatments give help and relief and remission between flare-ups of psoriasis.

The cause of psoriasis is not known with any certainty although it is thought that it may have something to do with a deficiency of the immune system causing the rapid production of new cells. Certain genes could be involved suggesting a genetic tendancy towards psoriasis but it seems that something is required to trigger the resulting psoriasis such as stress or a throat infection or a reaction to drugs.

In this blog we will be focusing on phototherapy or narrowband uvb psoriasis treatment including home treatment with occasional reference to other home treatments. What is the right course of treatment for one, is not necessarily the right course of psoriasis treatment for another, but phototherapy narrow band uvb has been proven and effective for psoriasis sufferers for whom other treatments have proved unsuccessful.
