Walking, Riding, Discovering

We kicked off the weekend early on Friday morning, packing our gear and driving to Rheden for a first hike in the Posbank. Check-in at the bungalow wasn’t until 16:00, so we had plenty of time to explore the heath. Because it was September and a weekday, we could use the scenic roads around the Posbank routes that close to cars on weekends and stay closed every day during July and August.

Under Heavy Skies: Posbank Hike

We parked the car at the main Posbank parking lot and began with lunch at Paviljoen De Posbank. After checking the weather radar, we saw rain on the way. So we quickly started the hike from the nearby viewpoint.

Next, we followed our GPX route across the heath. At first the western sky looked promising and the light gave stunning views. Then the clouds shifted south and the weather changed fast.

Soon we reached the woodland. A few drops fell, and then heavy rain followed. The trees offered little cover. We decided to continue a short distance to a restaurant for coffee and shelter.

Earlier forecasts suggested it was a brief shower. Yet the rain kept falling. We checked the radar again and saw the storm lingering, we only did 2 kilometers. Finally, we turned back toward the parking lot. The planned hike would have to wait. We then drove to the bungalow park, via the beautiful road through the National Park that was not closed on this day. We checked in early, and ended the day with a relaxed dinner at the park’s restaurant.

From Radio Waves to Royal Walls: Radio Kootwijk and Kasteel Rosendael

Saturday started with a visit to Radio Kootwijk. I had never been to this historic transmitter station, so it was high on my list. We parked at the closest lot near the main building and chose the short 2 km walking route. There is also a longer 7 km hike, but that will wait for another trip.

From the parking area we turned right and immediately saw the iconic Art-Deco building. The heathland still showed hints of late-summer purple, creating a striking view. The weather was far better than the day before. We followed the marked trail, stopping at several viewpoints for photos of the vast heath and the dramatic structure. At the main building we explored the grounds and captured more images.

Afterwards we enjoyed a sunny coffee break at Garage C and planned the next stop. Our choice: Kasteel Rosendael. We took the scenic back roads instead of the highway, enjoying the Veluwe landscape along the way.

At the castle we started with lunch and a Kasteel Beer. Then we paid the entrance fee and entered the famous gardens through the old castle stables. The Rosendael gardens are known for playful water features called “bedriegertjes” hidden fountains that spring to life without warning. Wide lawns lead to quiet ponds bordered by ancient trees, and winding paths reveal small follies and elegant flower beds. It’s an easy walk filled with photo opportunities and a calm, almost storybook atmosphere.

As the afternoon faded, we drove back to the bungalow for a relaxed evening. First came the Formula 1 qualifying, a perfect slow-down after a day. We cooked a simple dinner, keeping it easy after the miles of walking. The night wrapped up with a cold beer and a few lively games of Yahtzee, a laid-back finish to a full Saturday on the Veluwe.

Nature Trails and World-Class Art in One Day

Sunday began with planning the day’s adventure. We chose a visit to the Kröller-Müller Museum and a bike ride on the free white bikes scattered throughout De Hoge Veluwe National Park. Tickets for the park, car, and museum were booked online in advance for easy entry.

Our first stop was the museum itself. We drove through the national park and parked near the entrance. From there we walked to the sculpture garden and started with the outdoor art.

I’m not a big art lover, yet the open-air sculptures were striking and perfect for photos. After exploring most of the garden we stepped inside to see the paintings works by Vincent van Gogh, Charley Toorop, and other masters. Some pieces surprised me with their color and detail, even if galleries aren’t usually my thing.

Next came lunch. We took another short stroll through the garden, spotting a few sculptures we had missed, and then found a table at the museum’s outdoor restaurant. The food was excellent, and the warm weather made the outdoor seating ideal.

After lunch we left the museum, grabbed our backpacks from the car, and picked out white bikes with well-inflated tires. A slow ride followed, with plenty of photo stops. At one point we parked the bikes and walked a wooden boardwalk to a small pond, another quiet spot for pictures and a break.

Later in the afternoon it was time to head back. We cycled to the car, returned the bikes, and drove to the bungalow for a calm evening. The Formula 1 Monza Grand Prix set the pace while we relaxed. We finished the night with a detective board game and then called it a day, ready for an early checkout the next day and the drive home.

Clouds, Rain and some Sun

Our first full day began with a visit to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, and the weather couldn’t have been better bright skies, some clouds and sunshine set the tone. We strolled around the aqueduct, admiring the colorful narrowboats that glided along the canal, and paused often to take photos of the impressive views.

From there, we drove to Llangollen to explore the town, wander around the old train station, and enjoy the scenery along the River Dee, where the rocks in the river made for striking viewpoints. After a well-earned lunch, we continued exploring the riverside before heading towards Castell Dinas Brân. We only made it partway up the trail, stopping at a lower viewpoint of the castle, as the day was already slipping away.

By the time we returned to the car, the weather started to turn. The forecast for the week in Snowdonia didn’t look promising, and the closer we got to our hotel, the heavier the rain became. We eventually arrived with the car spattered by showers our sunny start giving way to a much wetter Welsh welcome. After checking out the hotel room, it was time to go to a super market for some snacks/drinks for the coming days and something simple for dinner.

Snowdonia in Focus: The Llyn Idwal Trail

On our second day it was still raining in Snowdonia. The weather radar, however, showed it would clear near Llyn Idwal within the hour. Since it was high on our list, we chose it as our first stop and decided to see what the skies would do. We paused at a layby by Llyn Ogwen, exploring a little in the rain. After half an hour we drove on to the Llyn Idwal trailhead car park.

It was still cloudy, but patches of blue were breaking through. Our timing was perfect. Within minutes of starting the walk we were already stopping for photos. Soon we reached the choice: low trail or high trail. We picked the high trail. The views over the lake were stunning.

One tip: pay for a full-day ticket at the trailhead. We only paid for four hours. By halfway, we had already been walking and photographing for two and a half. On the second stretch we had to move faster, taking fewer photos. The best part was still ahead. The path wound through huge stone blocks, with some light scrambling to get down. A few big steps required hands as well as feet. The route ended with a fun descent through a narrow crack between two rock walls.

Back at the car we set off towards the hotel. Within a minute we looked up to see four F-35 fighter jets flying low between the peaks. The sight and sound were incredible. The rest of the day was quieter. We stopped at Swallow Falls, then had a drink in the sun at the Swallow Falls Inn. Later we drove to Betws-y-Coed for a short walk and ended the day with dinner at one of its many restaurants.

Chasing Waterfalls in Snowdonia: The Aber Falls Trail

The next day started grey once again, with light drizzle in the air. While waiting at the hotel, we checked the radar and noticed better weather to the north. Therefore, we decided to drive about forty minutes to the Aber Falls car park. Parking was only available for the whole day, which meant we had plenty of time for the hike.

At first, the trail climbed gently on a wide, man-made path. The first two kilometers felt a little dull. However, the sound of the river and the hills around us made it pleasant enough. As we got closer, the scenery began to change. Soon, we spotted flashes of water tumbling in the distance. Eventually, we reached Aber Falls itself, where we stopped to explore the rocks and take countless photos.

Afterwards, we continued the loop. From here, the path became narrower and far more scenic. Looking back, the views of the main waterfall remained impressive. A short while later we reached a second fall. Although smaller and less dramatic, it was still worth the stop. By then, the sky had darkened. When the path curved to the right, the rain returned for a while.

Even in the showers, the climb offered striking views back to the falls. We kept wondering when the descent would begin. Finally, it came sudden and steep. In less than a kilometer, we lost nearly all the height we had gained. The slope was tough but manageable, and soon we were back at the valley floor.

Instead of heading straight to the car, we turned left to a small café. Here we enjoyed paninis and a chat with the owner, who gave us local tips. We even sampled different Welsh cakes. After this welcome break, we climbed back to the car. The rest of the day was quiet. We grabbed food from the supermarket, returned to the hotel, and ended the evening with dinner and a local beer as the rain kept falling.

A Day on the Edge of Wales: Roadtripping Anglesey

For the fourth day in a row, Snowdonia was grey and wet. The forecast showed no change, so we decided on a short Anglesey road trip. With only one day, we could not see everything, but we planned a few highlights.

Our first stop was Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber, recommended by the café owner we met the day before. This ancient site is one of the most interesting pieces of Welsh history on the island. From there we drove towards Beaumaris. On the way, we found a great viewpoint of the Bangor Garth Pier and stopped for some photos. In Beaumaris we explored the colourful houses before heading to Beaumaris Castle. Sadly, the castle was fenced off, so we skipped the visit and moved on. We didn’t feel to buy entrance tickets with the short amount of time we had.

Next, we stopped in Amlwch. Here we found a small coffee shop for lunch and a warm drink. Afterwards, we continued to Bull Bay for photos of the cliffs. Just a short drive further was Mynydd Parys, the site of an old Anglesey copper mine. The short hike here was incredible, with the ground painted in reds, oranges, and yellows from the old minerals.

Later, we drove towards Holyhead to explore the coastline. First, we tried to reach the North Stack Lighthouse. The walk was beautiful, with sea views and dramatic cliffs. However, the lighthouse itself was not the main attraction, and storm clouds were rolling in. So, we turned back and continued to the more famous South Stack Lighthouse.

South Stack was the perfect last stop. The mist over the sea gave it atmosphere, and the views of the lighthouse were stunning. We spent about 45 minutes walking around and taking photos before the weather turned again. Finally, we drove to a supermarket for dinner supplies and returned to the hotel, ending our Anglesey day trip.

Waterfalls and Reservoirs: Pistyll Rhaeadr and Lake Vyrnwy

The day began much the same, with clouds and drizzle over most of Snowdonia. Checking the weather radar, we found a clearer window further south. So, we set off towards Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall.

The drive itself was part of the adventure. The last few miles were along very narrow single-lane roads. Luckily, we arrived early and avoided most of the traffic. Once parked, we started at the base of the waterfall. It was already quite busy, so after a few photos we chose to hike to the top.

The trail up was short but steep, giving us lovely views over the valley. At the top, the sight of the waterfall crashing down was worth the climb. The only downside was the midges, which were annoying in the still air. Still, the weather held. Apart from a brief drizzle, we enjoyed sunshine mixed with clouds perfect for photos.

After a while, we continued our road trip to the next stop: Lake Vyrnwy and its famous dam. The drive once again took us along narrow country roads with stunning views. We parked below the dam and set off on a short walk around the river and lake. The views were incredible, and the dam itself stood out with its castle-like towers rising from the water.

When we had taken in the scenery and snapped plenty of photos, it was time to head back. The return drive took us along a winding mountain road, with even more scenic viewpoints where we stopped for photos. To finish the day, we treated ourselves to pizza from a great place in Betws-y-Coed. It was the perfect end to a day exploring two of the best places in mid-Wales.

The Best of Both Worlds: Snowdon by Train Up, Hike Down

Our last full day in Snowdonia finally brought better weather. We had already seen the forecast a few days earlier and decided to gamble on it. So, we booked one-way tickets for the Snowdon Mountain Railway, leaving us free to hike back down. The tickets were for late afternoon, around 16:30, which gave us a relaxed morning.

On the way to Llanberis we stopped several times to enjoy the mountain views. We also drove north of the town to photograph Llyn Padarn. The lake offers stunning scenery, including the famous Lonely Tree and the giant sword sculpture near the car park.

Once in Llanberis, we parked near the railway station and explored on foot. First, we picked up our train tickets early, which saved time later. Then we walked to Dolbadarn Castle, where the views over the valley were fantastic. By lunchtime, we were hungry and found a café serving local beers and hearty Welsh pasties. After a slow lunch, it was finally time for our train ride.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway was expensive, but it was worth it. The views during the climb were beautiful, and we were lucky with clear skies most of the way. At the summit, however, the peak was covered in clouds. Luckily, once we started hiking down, the mist lifted, revealing dramatic mountain landscapes.

The descent was steep but rewarding. The hike is only 7.5 km, yet it took us nearly 3.5 hours because of the scenery and photo stops. Halfway down, we even saw an RAF Chinook flying through the valley, circling close several times — an unforgettable moment.

By the end, we were glad we only hiked down. With 950 meters of descent, it was challenging enough. That evening we rested our legs and prepared for the long travel day home. It was the perfect ending to an incredible week in Snowdonia National Park.

On this hike, I explored one of the most beautiful routes: the 14 Vennenwandeling (14 Fens Trail). The path leads you past a series of stunning fens, each with its own character and charm. They are surrounded by pine forests and blooming heather in season. It’s an ideal spot for nature photography, birdwatching, or simply enjoying the calm that only a place like this can offer.

Fens, Forest and mud

There are several good parking options for the 14 Fens Trail in Oisterwijk, but the most convenient is the main parking area at Van Tienhovenlaan. From here, the circular trail is easy to access and well-marked. Right next to the parking lot, you’ll find the Visitors Center Oisterwijk and an inviting restaurant. It’s a great place to start your day with a coffee or snack before heading out into nature.

The trail begins at the nearby Speijckven, one of fourteen unique fens you’ll discover along the walk. The route winds through peaceful pine forests and along calm, reflective waters. Each fen has its own charm. The Speijckven, Brandven, and Van Esschenven are known for their open views. Adervennen, Witven and Heiven offer quiet forest edges. Diaconieven stands out for its glass-like surface and perfect reflections. You’ll also pass Staalbergenven, Kolkven, Lammervennen and Brouwkuip—each adding its own scenic moment to the journey. Some are tucked away between dense trees, while others sit wide in the heath, catching the shifting light beautifully.

Keep in mind that parts of the trail can get muddy after rain, especially in the shaded forest sections—so good footwear is recommended. About halfway through the route, you’ll reach Boshuis Venkraai, a charming forest café nestled between the trees. It’s the perfect stop for drinks, a warm lunch, or something sweet before continuing on. With its mix of natural beauty, peaceful landscapes, and convenient facilities, the 14 Fens Trail is one of the most rewarding walks in the Netherlands for nature lovers, photographers, and hikers alike.

Visitors can explore the park through various safari modes: drive your own car amidst free-roaming animals, join a guided bus tour with informative rangers, enjoy a serene boat ride, or embark on a walking safari to get up close with diverse wildlife. Each safari offers a unique perspective, allowing guests to witness animals like lions, giraffes, elephants, and cheetahs in habitats that closely resemble their natural environments.

Car safari

We arrived on this Saturday in the morning around 10:00 and decided to start directly with the car safari. Which is normally included in the price of your ticket. With your own car you can drive through the habitats of the different animals.

When in the park it’s not allowed to open the windows or the roof of your car. This makes photographing the animals very difficult. It can maybe differ a bit per car, but the car we had with us the glass of the windows was too much in the way of getting some good photos.

For photography this was not the most successful driving around in your own car, while not allowed to open the windows. If you want to make the most of it maybe a Jeep safari is the better option. Here you will be in an open Jeep driving a different route through the park with a guide that drives the Jeep. Because this one is open it will be much easier to make so great photos. But this option will cost you extra.

Walking safari

After exiting the Car safari you end up at the parking lot, where we took our gear and walked to the main entrance to start the walking safari. For the walking safari I downloaded the Beekse Bergen app (iOS or Android) to have a view on the map and what would be the best route to take. We first had the idea to take the boat safari to the other side of the Zoo. So at the main entrance we headed right to the first animals the Gorilla’s.

Here it was much easier to take some photos of the Gorilla’s. There was no glass and the they were relatively close to take some good photos. After the that there was an enclosure which should have some Lion’s but they were not visible. So we continued to the boat, where we found a long line so we decided to leave the boat safari for at the end.

When continuing the walking safari you notice that most animals have quite large enclosures. This can make it difficult to make some beautiful close-ups when your lens is not long enough. I used 500mm on Full Frame but was not always enough to get close enough. I also rarely used the 100mm side of the lens, most was 300mm or more.

The walking safari was the best option for some great photos. Most enclosers where good for a not to Zoo like photo. Although it was not always possible to keep buildings or walls out of the frame. Some AI removal can help in some cases.

We ended up spending most of our time walking through the zoo and taking photos. This area also offers several places to relax, grab some lunch, or enjoy a drink. All in all, we spent around five hours exploring Safaripark Beekse Bergen, covering a total of seven kilometers on foot.

Boat safari

We ended the day with the boat safari, it was rather busy. We arrived at the moment a boat left the dock. The boats go every 30 minutes, so we had to wait about 30 minutes inline to be able to board the next boat.

In the line we were in the back so we could unfortunately not see on top without any glass. We found a place next to an opening to have no glass, but we were at the left side. Which looks like it’s a good spot to see something during the boat safari.

Most animals were to far away even with 500mm to make some nice photos. But there are some other chances you have on the boat. One of them is the birds you will encounter during the trip. For example if you are lucky and look good around you, you can maybe spot some kingfishers. We’ve seen during the 20 minute trip three of them. Two were too difficult and fast to capture, but I then also found one at the side of the river chilling on a branch.

This was a fun and easy trip to get a rest and to get back to the entrance of the park. You are only allowed to do a one way trip, if you want to go back again it’s possible but you have to get back inline. You can also start with the boat trip, but the line can maybe change your mind to take the boat later or directly.

Visiting the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen

The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen has four main entrances, all of them have parking space to park your car. Three of the entrances also have a place to get some lunch or something to drink. Only Parking de Zilk has no options for something to eat or drink. In the nature reserve there are no options at all, so you need to go to one of the three entrances that have an option. If you go to the Parking Oranjekom at about 500m of the entrance you have a visitors center where you can find more information about the nature reserve.

My favorite entrance

My favorite entrance is the one at the Parking Oranjekom, here you have two option on both sides of the road. Although this is most of the time the most popular one, so if you are a little bit late on a sunny day it can be full. My other favorite is Parking de Zilk, this one is a little less busy and I have not seen it completely full. Another option is the one in Zandvoort. Parking Pannenland is my least favorite, it has a quite narrow access road which can be a bit annoying on busy days, where it will be difficult to enter or exit with the possible oncoming traffic.

Visiting the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen is not free. You always need to pay an entrance fee per person. Also parking is not for free at the four main entrances. But it not that expensive for a visit. At the time of writing it’s €1,50 per person and parking costs are €1,50/h¹ (with a max. of €6,00 for a full day) per car. At all entrances there are machines to buy your entrance ticket and pay for your parking. If you think you will go enough to the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen it’s also possible to buy a year subscription. You can find more information and option to buy on the website of the AWD Waternet.

¹ At the time of writing, this was not yet active and still cost €2.00 for a full day. However, this is expected to change sometime in May or June 2025.

Bring your Camera

The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen is know for the many deer you will find here. In the last years the number of deer have declined but there are still many to spot. It’s very difficult to go and not spot any deer, you will always see them. Even during a shorter hike of about an hour. Or at least that is my experience, I have not been here without spotting any. But there are a lot more animals to spot than only deer. You could spot foxes, pine martens, kingfisher, tree frogs and many more different birds and animals.

With everything you can spot and see it’s good to bring your camera. With your phone you can already make some beautiful photos. Even of the deer it’s possible with a phone, with some it’s easy to come a bit closer and with the tele lens of your phone to make some photos. But some are also a bit skittish, then it’s good to have a camera with you with more zoom and better quality.

I always like to bring my Mirrorless camera and a 100-500mm or 200-800mm tele lens. But if you want to focus a bit more on the landscape a 14-35mm or 24-105mm is also very suitable. But with the short end of your tele it’s also possible to take some landscape photos. But there is also enough to capture when you bring your Macro lens.

Walking in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen

With the four main entrances you have many options to start your walk. There are also some smaller entrances but there is no or minimal parking available. In this blog post I will focus on the main entrances.

The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen is a big nature reserve and you can walk here many kilometers if you want, but also some short routes are at some of the parkings possible. I like the walks of about 10 to 15 kilometers in the area, but I also sometimes like to do some of my shorter ones.

My Favorite routes

My favorite walk is found starting at parking Oranjekom. If you start here you will come across the most diverse nature landscapes in the area. From walks in forest areas, different “mountains” found here or if you walk a bit further almost savanna like areas, there is enough to see here.

The Red ~12 km walk from the Oranjekom entrance is my favorite round in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. It has almost everything you can find here. It starts with a beautiful part along the water channels, that will lead you over paths through more dense forest, followed by some dunes leading to the almost savanna like areas.

For photography and spotting animals also this route has many places to stop for a landscape photo or to spot one of the many animals. The Ridge along the “Voormalige renbaan” is my favorite part. You are walking a bit higher than your surroundings giving you a good view of the area. With also big change to spot any of the animals.

Another one of my favorites routes or in this case you have 2 options, is the Purple ~8,6 km walk from Oranjekom parking or the Blue ~9 km walk from Zandvoort Parking. With both routes you ascend a few of the “highest mountains” of the area. Ok, ok it are no mountains it are just some small hills which are at the highest 36 meters. But I like the path over these hills which give you a good view over the nature reserve. In the distance to the north also a view of Zandvoort. Check the map for all the routes and point of interest.

Tip 1: Bring your Telephoto lens

In almost all Zoo’s it’s good to bring your Telephoto lens, something like a 55-250mm, 70-200mm, 70-300mm, 100-400mm or something similar. With lenses like this it’s much easier photographing animals that are further away. But another advantage most of the time, a telephoto is good in blowing out the background when animals are closer to you. This way you can remove the distractions and get the focus on your subject. When your lens quality permits it, shoot wide open with the biggest aperture possible. Or if you are really close, close the aperture a little bit to get enough of the animal in focus. Make sure to nail the focus on the eyes of the animal.

With some Telephoto lenses it’s these days easy to use it as the only lens you take. Newer lenses sometimes have a good close focusing distance of only 90cm while you still can use 300mm or more. This allows you to also use the lens from closer by and fill the frame more. Like with Butterflies for example. But if you want you can also take an extra different lens, like a Macro lens to focus more on the details. You also can use your standard Zoom 18-55mm, 24-105mm for the people or architecture.

Tip 2: Get close to the wires and glass

In Zoo photography a lot of animals are behind a mesh wire fence or behind glass. This can sometimes be difficult to take some great photos where the mesh of the fence or reflections in glass is not visible. Both have their own difficulties but in most situations the problem can be solved in the same way.

A first option is to put your lens/lens hood as close as possible to the fence or glass. With a fence you can move around your lens a little bit to see if you can remove as much as possible from the fence in your photo. Normally if you are close you should not see a lot of the fence. Maybe you still have some small evidence in your background from the fence. Also use an as big as possible aperture and if possible zoom in as much as possible. With 500mm f/5.6 you will see less of the fence compared to using 100mm f/8.0 for example.

With a fence also try to avoid shooting through a fence when the sun is right behind you and you cannot get close enough. In many cases the sun highlights the fence and it will be much more visible in your photo.

With glass your lens (hood) will block the reflections when you put your lens against the glass. If you are shooting down a bit or your lens can’t touch the glass fully, you can also use your hand to block out a bit more of the reflections. For Glass another option is to use a Circular Polarizing filter (CPL). A CPL will use you a bit of light because of how the filter works, so not always suitable. But when there is enough light it is an easy way to remove the reflections of the glass.

The glass used in Zoo’s is not always the same. In some cases it can have major impact on sharpness of your photo. In this case you can try to play around a bit with the angle you take the photo. Start with to shoot perpendicular as much as possible to see if it improves sharpness.

Tip 3: Take attention to your background

Zoo photography offers a fantastic opportunity to capture close-up images of exotic animals, but one of the key challenges is managing the background. A cluttered or artificial background such as fences, walls, or signage can break the illusion of a natural setting and distract from the subject. As a photographer, it’s crucial to pay attention to what’s behind your subject before you take the shot. Changing your angle, moving a few steps to the side, or lowering your position can dramatically alter the composition, helping you frame the animal against greenery, rocks, or water instead of concrete barriers.

To make zoo photos appear as natural as possible, use a wide aperture to create a shallow depth of field, which blurs the background and minimizes distractions. Zoom in tight on the animal to crop out man-made elements, or use objects like leaves, branches, or enclosures as natural-looking foreground framing. Timing is also key photographing during quieter times of day or when animals are near more naturalistic parts of their enclosures can help. With a bit of creativity and patience, you can produce images that feel like they were taken in the wild, even within the confines of a zoo. Although it’s not always possible to remove all distractions.

Tip 4: Get at the level of the Animal

One of the most powerful ways to connect with animal subjects is to photograph them at eye level. This perspective draws viewers into the animal’s world, creating a sense of intimacy and empathy that’s hard to achieve from above or afar. Whether it means lying on the ground to meet a squirrel’s gaze or crouching by a pond to see eye-to-eye with a frog, this angle tells a more personal and engaging story.

But don’t stop there once you’ve captured that classic eye-level shot, think outside the box. Try shooting from unexpected angles: directly overhead, from below, through foliage, or even incorporating reflections in water or glass. These creative perspectives can reveal surprising beauty and character, transforming an ordinary scene into something striking and original.

Tip 5: Choose the right Shutter speed

In zoo photography, choosing the right shutter speed can make or break your shot. For active animals like birds in flight, monkeys swinging, or big cats on the move use a fast shutter speed (1/1000s or faster) to freeze the action and avoid motion blur. With higher shutter speeds check the results and if you lens has Image Stabilization (IS) it can be useful and better for the results if you turn IS off.

For calm or resting animals, you can use slower speeds (1/250s or even slower if the animal is very still), especially in lower light. Just make sure your hands are steady or use a monopod to avoid camera shake. But it can be good to also keep in mind your zoom level and the millimeters used. The rule use a little faster speed then the millimeters used. So when zoomed at 200mm use 1/200s or quicker. There can be factors where the rule doesn’t apply, Image Stabilization or steady hands. So when you are not sure play around with it and regularly check your results.

Bonus Tip: If you’re shooting through glass or wire, a faster shutter speed can also help reduce reflections and blurring caused by camera movement.

Pro Tip: Use shutter priority mode or manual mode to take control, and keep an eye on your ISO to maintain proper exposure without introducing too much noise.

Some Extra tips

You can spend days with talking about Zoo photography. Next to the above 5 tips here some extra tips you can use in the Zoo. You can also check my Zoo category with some blog posts about the Zoo’s I visited. In my Animals Portfolio I have more examples of some beautiful Animal portraits and more.

 Leave your flash at home
In short, just don’t use your flash when in a Zoo. The most important reason is it can bother animals and it is also not encouraged in many zoos. In al lot of zoos it’s also in many cases actively discouraged to use your flash.

But more than that, flash photographs simply aren’t necessarily better quality. They tend to highlight reflections while removing shadows, which can make your image look flat. When shooting through glass it can give you a large reflection of the flash light causing an even flatter image. If it’s a fence it can highlight the fence more in your picture. For me personally I never have a flash with me to the Zoo.

 Don’t Forget the Surroundings
The environment tells part of the story. Look for natural backdrops, interesting lighting, or moments when the animal interacts with its surroundings. Including thoughtful context can make your image more immersive and meaningful.

 Be Patient
The best moments don’t happen on cue. Spend time observing your subject patience often rewards you with more authentic expressions, behaviors, and unique interactions.

 Respect the Rules
Always follow your zoo’s photography guidelines. Some may restrict flash, specific equipment, or access to certain areas. Respecting these rules helps protect the animals and ensures a positive experience for everyone.

In the background I’m also busy with writing down some of my recent Travel stories of an Amazing trip to Iceland and a holiday to the Beautiful Mountains of the Dolomites. But still busy finding the right direction on how to write down the trips on my blog.

First days in Geysir

We started the first full day with some photos of the only still active geyser Strokkur. I took my tripod and camera and tried to find a nice angle. These days Strokkur is very inconsistent with the eruptions. So sometimes you wait 20 minutes for the next one or the next time after 7 minutes it does 4 eruptions in a short sequence.

After some good results with the eruptions it was time to zoom in a bit. I also wanted to try to get the bubble just before it bursts. But this was a bit more difficult to time. I also made the mistake to not use a fast enough shutter speed. So the photos came out with to much movement. The next time I would use a faster shutter speed to freeze the movement more. Then it will be the challenge to get the smaller bubbles in the large bubble just before it bursts.

With enough photos of Strokkur we walked around a bit in the area to get some more photos of other pools and details. We also wanted to go up the hill to the lookout points. But it took not long to make the decision to not go up. The weather changed quickly, we ended up in a snow storm, with lots of wind and snow so it was time to find some shelter in the hotel.

Gullfoss: The Golden Jewel of Iceland’s Golden Circle

At the beginning of the afternoon the weather changed and the wind died down a bit and it stopped snowing. We stepped in the Car to drive 10 minutes to the Gullfoss waterfall. The plan was to first explore the area a bit to see where to see what and already make some photos.

After some lunch it was time to take out the tripod and play around a bit with ND-filters to catch some move of the water in the photos. Also the Circular Polarizing filter (CPL) came out to try to remove some of the reflections and trying to let the rainbow pop more. With the CPL I still need to play around more to better make use of it and better understand when it will be a good moment to use the filter. So when back at home it will also be time to use it more. When we were done at Gullfoss we went back to the hotel and directly went back to the geysers to make some more photos with the sun that was setting. At this moment Strokkur was really irregular with the eruptions but it was worth it with some beautiful results.

Aurora and Steam: Witnessing the Northern Lights in Geysir

After dark we kept an eye on the sky and chances to see if we could see the Northern Lights. Although it was clear with a full moon, we had no luck yet. So it was first time for a Christmas Diner in the Hotel Restaurant. After dinner still nothing to see, but we kept looking to the sky in front of the Hotel. We were ready with our tripods and f/2.8 wide angle lenses.

Then around 22:30 I turned around to have a look at the South, there it was a thin line of Northern Light getting stronger every second. We started with some photos with the settings f/2.8, 4s, ISO 800. But it was so light with the full moon and clear sky it was even possible to go to 1 second shutter speed. The Northern Light moved so quick it was also better for the photos. In the next 2 hours we moved slowly to Strokkur to end there the night there with some last shots.

Roadtrip to the second Hotel

On day 3 it was the moment to make the roadtrip to the next hotel, that is found just before the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. During the trip we made a lot of short stops to make some snapshots of the Icelandic landscapes. The first long stop was at the Skógafoss Waterfall, where we first got some lunch. After lunch it was time to explore the waterfall.

Skógafoss: Witnessing the Power of Iceland’s Mighty Waterfall

This was the first spot where there were many tourists, so difficult at the bottom to take some photos without people. But soon I already decided to go op the stairs at the side of the Waterfall to have a look at the top. At the top you had a good look at the waterfall and here I made one of my favorite photos of the trip. It is shot down with a beautiful look at the lines of ice and the different colors on the mountain walls.

Following the trail along the Skógá river upstream some more waterfalls are found. We didn’t have a lot of time so only followed the trail a little bit. The first waterfall you encounter is Hestavaðsfoss waterfall. This one is not so high but still majestic and beautiful to see. Because the past 2 days have been really cold it was amazing to see the ice buildup around the big rocks in the water. Made some more photos here and then it was already time to go down and continue the roadtrip.

The Magic of Iceland’s Black Beaches

The next longer stop was the famous Black Beach of Iceland, Reynisfjara beach. We were lucky it was not so windy, so no crazy sea when we were there. Did some exploring of the beach, checked the Hálsanefshellir Cave. Unfortunately here also too many other tourists making it difficult to make some photos of the cave. But have made some nice photos here of the waves reaching the beach or the Rock formations in the sea. Last short stop was at the other side of the mountain in Vik to make a photo from the Víkurfjara Black Sand Beach of the rock formations in the sea.

Beaches, Glaciers and Reindeer

On the first day at the next hotel it was time for Diamond Beach and the Glacier lagoon. When we left at the hotel the sun was not up yet, but at the first stop we had a beautiful sky during sunrise. The first stop was a the east side of Diamond Beach, where some amazing ice blocks where found. It was amazing here to play around with the light shining through those blocks of Ice and make some nice compositions with the light.

Where Ice Meets Ocean: The Beauty of Jökulsárlón

When we had enough photos from Diamond Beach it was time to cross the road to the Glacier lagoon. From there we explored the edge of the lagoon to take some photos of the big ice blocks found here. If you take some special attention you can also spot some seals swimming in the lagoon. The ice in the lagoon is different everyday. So you need to be a bit lucky with what you find there. For us there was much to see and explore.

We followed the edge of the lagoon and found a nice rocky beach with some great views with the glacier in the background and many ice blocks on the shore. We spent some hours here, got some lunch and then it was time to visit the other side of Diamond Beach. It was already different than we have seen from the other side. With this time some big Ice blocks on the beach. After it was time to have a quick visit to the Fjallsárlón Glacier lagoon. But were not too long there because the weather changed quickly with some high wind speeds.

Glacier Walk on Falljökull: Into the Crevasses

On the fourth day it was time for a Glacier Walk on the Falljökull Glacier. Early in the morning we were picked up by the guide that brought us to the Glacier for an amazing walk. It was apparently a bit difficult this year with the Ice Caves, but we were lucky that they found one a few days before. One of my favorite shots was made in the cave, although it was with my phone. After we continue the walk through some of the crazy Crevasses found in the glacier.

The Glacier was an amazing experience, great to see you sometimes also can’t see your walking on ice, but at other times it’s very clear you walk over ice. Because there was no snow on the glacier the ice was very clear. After some hours on the Glacier it was time to go back to the hotel for some lunch. After that there was still some time left and decided to explore the edge of the Svínafellsjökull Glacier. The sun was already going down and with the clear weather we had some beautiful light.

Vestrahorn and the Black Sands of Stokksnes

Day five started with a drive to Vestrahorn and the black sand beach there. During the trip we got to talk about the wildlife in Iceland, not even 5 minutes later we spotted a herd of Reindeer. We directly stopped close to make some photos. After getting some good results it was time to continue the trip to Vestrahorn. On arrival first time for a warm Cappuccino and after it was time to pay for the entrance and head to the black sand beach. The wind was quite present, and you had to turn around to evade the gusts of wind with sand.

We spent quite sometime here to capture the nature and more. You could find some crazy patterns in the zand, which were nice to include in your composition. After Stokksnes it was time to have a look at the Viking Village. From the parking you can walk to this village and the water and background with a yellow house gives some nice photo options.

The last full day

On the last full day in the morning it was time again to drive west, back to the Airport. During the roadtrip back we are going to stop again at different places for some photos. The first stop is a smaller Waterfall. It’s called Fossálar Waterfall and we spent some time here to take some photos. I first did some exploring to have some different views on the Waterfall. After it was time to take out the Tripod and ND-filters to play around a bit with long exposures. With the sun rise just starting it was a bit difficult to make a really good photo. Most part of the waterfall was in the shadows while the ground surrounding the waterfall slowly was catching the golden light of the rising sun.

A Hidden Gem of Iceland: The Breathtaking Beauty of Fjaðrárgljúfur

After the waterfall it was time for the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. Here the weather changed a bit with increasing wind which was kinda cold. But following the trail along the Canyon you already forgot the cold. At each viewpoint took some time to take some photos. Also here it was difficult again with the harsh light on the top of the canyon and the dark shadows inside the canyon. With the strong wind it was not handy to take out the tripod, so I made some photos handheld. Then it’s a bit more difficult to take a multi shot HDR, so shot one photo and had a good look on the Histogram to have all the information I need. At the last viewpoint had a beautiful moment where the light was shining through the canyon giving a beautiful shot with also the blue icy water.

With some nice photos in the pocket it was time again to walk back to the car. Back at the Car it was only a short drive to the next stop. We had a short stop at the Eldhraun Lava Field. Here you have a viewpoint and a small trail to walk around and explore the views a bit. During the time we were here the fields were not so green as in the summer, but still crazy to see how big these fields are. After a short stop it was time to continue.

The last stop of the Trip: Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

During the ride to the last stop we ended up in a kilometers wide sandstorm. Was amazing to see it was sort of misty but then because of all the sand. It was already getting late so the sun was almost gone. At the last stop we really noticed that. At the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall it was very cold and windy, we did not have that kind of cold the whole week. So it took a bit of time to get used to it. The group decided to not make the stop too long so it was directly time to make some photos. Because of the cold there was a lot of Ice every where so the stairs that normally leads you to behind the waterfall was closed, it was covered in a thick layer of ice. But even the path before everything was already very slippery.

After the last photos it was time to get quickly back in the warm Car to drive the last part of the trip back to the last hotel near the airport. After checkin we had some dinner and then it was time for a short night, to standup early in the morning to take the plane back from Iceland to the Netherlands. That was my first time experience in Iceland.

Picture-Perfect Lakes of the Northern Dolomites

The northern Dolomites are home to some of the most beautiful and accessible alpine lakes in Italy. Each one offers unique charm, stunning views, and easy walking paths. Lago di Braies is the most famous. Its emerald waters, wooden boathouse, and dramatic mountain backdrop make it a must-see. The loop trail around the lake is easy and scenic. Visit early in the morning for calm reflections and fewer crowds.

Close by, Lago di Anterselva is quieter and more peaceful. It sits deep in a forested valley near the Austrian border. A flat trail circles the lake, perfect for a relaxed walk. From here, the Staller Saddle Pass takes you to Obersee in Austria. The drive is narrow and one-way, but the views are worth it. Obersee is a hidden alpine lake surrounded by rugged peaks and fewer tourists. In the nearby Puster Valley, Lago di Dobbiaco offers an easy trail and a family-friendly vibe. It’s great for a short walk or picnic by the water. Just down the road, Lago di Landro is a peaceful spot with a striking mountain backdrop. It’s often overlooked, making it feel like a true hidden gem.

Finally, Lago di Misurina combines natural beauty with iconic Dolomite views. From the lakeshore, you can see the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The view on Hotel Misurina is especially scenic. With the beautiful mountain backdrop. Whether you’re walking around the lake or just soaking in the views, the setting is unforgettable.

These lakes are close enough to visit in one day or spread out over several. Scenic roads connect them, making the journey just as beautiful as the destinations. Together, they show the peaceful and scenic side of the Dolomites—no long hikes needed.

Hiking the Dolomites: Must-Do Trails for Every Level

The Dolomites offer many easy trails for all skill levels. Gentle paths around Elfenweg, Castello di Brunico, and Piramidi di Terra a Perca are perfect for relaxed hikes and family outings. These routes show stunning nature without steep climbs. The area is also famous for beautiful alpine lakes like Lago di Braies, Lago di Anterselva, and Lago di Misurina. Walking around these lakes is easy and rewarding, with breathtaking views and peaceful surroundings. In many cases you can also combine a few of the trails on the same day.

For more challenging hikes, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Seceda, Kronplatz and Cinque Torri have some steeper trails. Luckily, on some of the mountains the gondolas can help you gain elevation quickly here. This allows you to enjoy spectacular views without long or difficult climbs. Using gondolas, you can reach higher points and then explore shorter walks and photo spots. With this mix of easy trails, lakeside strolls, and gondola rides, the Dolomites are accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

The Most Scenic Peaks of the Dolomites: A photographer’s Guide

Dolomites Trails

Hiking the Ardennes

Monday morning began with grey skies and a rainy forecast—not ideal for hiking in the Ardennes. Still, I was eager to make the most of the day. After checking the weather map, I decided on a destination that could be enjoyed even in bad weather: Remouchamps. Once there, the rain hadn’t let up, and since it was already lunchtime, I first found a cozy spot to grab a bite to eat. With the weather still gloomy, it was the perfect moment to visit Les Grottes de Remouchamps, a popular attraction in the region. The caves were dry and accessible—luckily, despite heavy rain earlier in the week that had flooded parts of the tunnels. On this day, the conditions were just right, and the boat ride inside the cave system was running again, offering a unique and peaceful underground experience.

After the cave visit, the rain continued, so I decided to drive on to Spa and check in at the hotel. Once settled in, I took some time to relax and wait for the weather to improve. Eventually, the skies began to clear just enough to allow for a gentle evening walk through the town center. Spa, known for its thermal baths and historic charm, offered a pleasant atmosphere despite the damp start. I ended the day by exploring a few local streets and finding a nice place for dinner—a quiet end to a rainy but rewarding first day in the Ardennes.

La Hoëgne Walk: Adventure Along Flowing Waters and Lush Trails

The day began with a hearty breakfast at the hotel, fueling us for one of the most beautiful hikes in the Belgian Ardennes: the La Hoëgne trail. The weather was ideal for hiking—clear skies and cool temperatures. The only minor concern was the water level of the La Hoëgne river, which needs to be crossed by car to reach the starting point. Fortunately, the water was low enough to pass without any issues. Once on the trail, we were surrounded by lush forest, flowing streams, and wooden bridges, making it one of the most scenic routes in the region.

While the trail was mostly accessible, a section near the iconic curved bridge was temporarily closed due to high water. A marked detour guided us around the flooded area, allowing us to continue without much delay. The La Hoëgne trail offers countless photo opportunities, with mossy rocks, cascading streams, and peaceful forest views at every turn. Despite the small deviation, the hike was a highlight of the trip—peaceful, photogenic, and full of natural charm.

After the hike, we drove to Les Cascades de Coo, one of Belgium’s most famous waterfalls. First, we enjoyed a well-earned lunch paired with a refreshing Belgian beer. With new energy, we explored the area around the waterfall. After we continued on foot to the Barrage de Coo, a nearby dam offering scenic views and photo spots. After a full day of hiking and sightseeing, we returned to the hotel in Spa to relax and enjoy a quiet dinner. It was the perfect way to wind down an active day in the Ardennes.

Ninglinspo Trail Guide: A Must-Do Hike in the Ardennes

Wednesday was reserved for one of the most iconic hikes in the Belgian Ardennes: the Ninglinspo Trail. On the way to the trailhead, rain started falling and continued even after we arrived. A quick check of the weather radar showed a brief window of about 15 more minutes of rain before it would clear for the rest of the day. While it took a little longer than expected, the skies eventually dried up, and we began this unforgettable hike. Right from the start, the trail impresses with a wooden bridge over the river and the enchanting scenery of flowing streams and forest paths. The route is full of charm and adventure, including small waterfalls and river crossings that bring you close to nature.

Some parts of the trail were closed due to earlier storms, but well-marked detours made it easy to continue. As we approached the higher sections of the trail, where the Ninglinspo river still guides the way. We encountered ropes installed along steep sections—a fun and slightly technical part of the route that adds to the excitement. Near the end, a final river crossing leads into a forest dotted with stone cairns, creating a peaceful, almost mystical atmosphere. Although the last stretch is less scenic, it still offers a pleasant walk, finishing with a viewpoint overlooking the lush valley below. The Ninglinspo hike truly lived up to its reputation as one of the most beautiful and unique trails in Belgium.

After the hike, it was time for something different. We headed to Château de Franchimont, a nearby medieval castle just a short drive away. Before exploring, we stopped for lunch at Brasserie de Franchimont, complete with another great Belgian beer. Once inside the castle, we explored its winding towers, old stone corridors, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the Franchimont valley. With a few steep staircases and lots of character, it was a great way to wrap up the afternoon. As evening approached, we returned to the hotel in Spa to freshen up and relax before heading into town for dinner. Spa’s cozy center offered several dining options, and we found a great spot to end the day.

Wrapping Up the week with Ardennes Landmarks

On the final day of our Ardennes getaway, we enjoyed one last breakfast before checking out of the hotel. Although it was time to head home, we still had a few must-see spots left on our itinerary. Our first stop was the Barrage de Robertville, a peaceful location perfect for a short walk and some scenic photos of the lake and surrounding nature. From there, we followed a forest path leading to the Castle of Reinhardstein, nestled in the woods. While the setting was promising, the visit itself was a bit disappointing. The staff wasn’t particularly welcoming, and information about guided tours or how to enter the castle wasn’t clear. Instead of waiting around, we decided to continue exploring the beautiful area around the castle on foot.

Our last destination before heading home was Lac de la Gileppe. One of the most impressive lakes in the Belgian Ardennes. After parking, we walked to the panoramic viewpoint to take in the wide, sweeping views—an ideal photo opportunity. Then we headed down to the dam for a walk across it, pausing along the way to capture the striking landscape. The massive towers rising from the lake offer dramatic scenes that are perfect for photography. To cap off the visit, we took the elevator up to the viewing platform, which delivered a stunning final perspective of the area. With our cameras full and the weekend complete, it was finally time to drive home, ending our Ardennes adventure on a high note.
