Promoting Psychology in Secondary Schools

The American Psychological Foundation provides financial support for innovative research and programs that enhance the power of psychology to elevate the human condition and advance human potential. APF's Pre-College Psychology Grant program provides financial support for efforts aimed at improving the quality of education in psychological science and its application in secondary schools for talented students.

The program awards grants of up to $20,000 to projects that improve the quality of high school education in psychology and/or encourage talented high school students to pursue careers in psychology. Priority is given to projects that reinforce the discipline of psychology as a science in secondary school curricula; expand the profile of psychology as a science among talented high school students; convey to high school students that psychological science is a tool to improve society; and teach students about career options that apply psychology outside of an academic setting. Proposals must focus on supporting the education of talented high school students.

American Psychological Foundation invites applications for Pearson Early Career Grant

The American Psychological Foundation invites early career researchers to apply for the Pearson Early Career Grant. The program's goals are to support psychology's efforts to improve areas of critical need in society, including but not limited to innovative scientifically-based clinical work on serious mental illness, serious emotional disturbance, incarcerated or homeless individuals, children with serious emotional disturbance, and adults with serious mental illness; and to encourage early career psychologists to devote their careers to underserved populations.

Applicants should be psychologists with an Ed.D., Psy.D., or Ph.D. from an accredited university, and be no more than seven years postdoctoral.

Amount: $12,000 + $1,500 for travel costs

Improving the Lives of Older Adults

Kendal Charitable Funds is seeking proposals for promising innovations that will transform the experience of aging. Established in 1989, the organization raises and disburses funds in support of the charitable purposes of the Kendal Corporation and its affiliates, a system of not-for-profit communities, programs, and services for older adults.

The funds' Promising Innovations grant program seeks to support new projects designed to enhance the lives of older adults, whether through services, research, and/or developing new understandings and awareness of the potential for aging well. The program is looking for pilot projects that address one or more of these criteria. Priority will be given to opportunities that have the greatest potential for change and replication to impact the greatest number of individuals.

Potential project topics include but are not limited to 1) The Field of Aging — wellness enhancement, quality of life, multi-generational relationships, and home and community; and 2) Populations of Older Adults — frail, thriving, underserved, minority, and cognitively impaired. In addition, the foundation may consider other grants to individuals and organizations whose proposals compliment these topics. Grants are available only for new programs; existing programs are not eligible for funding.

Collaborative R34s for Pilot Studies of Innovative Treatments in Mental Disorders

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), seeks to support collaborative preliminary intervention studies to evaluate the feasibility, tolerability, acceptability and safety of novel mechanism drug candidates, promising investigational new drugs (INDs), or novel psychosocial strategies for the treatment of mental disorders and for obtaining the preliminary data needed as a pre-requisite to larger-scale (efficacy or effectiveness) intervention or services studies. This FOA should be used when at least two but no more than three sites from different Institutions/Organizations are needed to complete the study. The collaborating studies should be organized in order to increase sample size, accelerate recruitment, and/or increase sample diversity and representation.

American Federation for Aging Research

The American Federation for Aging Research, a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to support and advance healthy aging through biomedical research, provides financial support to early and mid-career scientists whose research can increase knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of aging.

The AFAR Research Grants Program provides up to $100,000 for a one- to two-year award to junior faculty (MDs and PhDs) to conduct research that will serve as the basis for longer-term research efforts.

AFAR-supported investigators study a broad range of biomedical and clinical topics, including the causes of cellular senescence, the role of estrogen in the development of osteoporosis, the genetic factors associated with Alzheimer's disease, the effects of nutrition and exercise on the aging process, and more.

Research on Children in Military Families: The Impact of Parental Military Deployment and Reintegration

The National Endowment for Financial Education, a nonprofit, national foundation wholly dedicated to improving the financial well-being of all Americans, has announced guidelines for its 2011 grant program.

The NEFE grants program seeks to fund innovative research and research-based development projects that can make a profound contribution to the field of financial literacy. Inquiries are encouraged from disciplines in fields as diverse as behavior, economics, neuroscience, sociology, psychology, marketing, finance, education, change theory, decision sciences, and others.

Of particular interest are pro-active research projects whose findings may cultivate critical thinking in the financial literacy community. Also of interest are development projects that put research recommendations into action. Project outcomes must be capable of achieving traction and measurable impact with audiences such as financial education intermediaries, researchers, practitioners, decision makers, and others who can achieve effective outreach to a target population with an unmet financial literacy need or to the general public.

Economics of Retirement

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research on the economic and health-related factors that influence older persons’ choices on labor force participation as they near typical retirement age and throughout the later stages of life. The interaction of health, work, family status, and economic wellbeing is enormously complex, and the direction of causal effects among those factors is often unclear. Because of those complexities, the FOA especially encourages innovative approaches to (1) modeling the dynamic processes underlying labor force decisions over the life-cycle, and (2) enabling valid causal inference regarding the effects of economic and health factors on work decisions as well as the effects of work on health status. The FOA calls for analysis of secondary datasets, development of new datasets, observational and experimental analysis, cross-national comparisons; and quasi-experiments enabled by changes in public policy. Research that identifies disparities between population segments or emphasizes at-risk groups is encouraged.

Healthy Relationship Peer Educator Program (Avon)

The Sociology Program supports basic research on all forms of human social organization -- societies, institutions, groups and demography -- and processes of individual and institutional change. American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Multiple Grants

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research and education and to reaching out to people with mood disorders and those impacted by suicide.

AFSP research grants support studies that aim to increase understanding of the causes of suicide and factors related to suicide risk, or to test treatments and other interventions designed to prevent suicide. Investigators from all academic disciplines are eligible to apply, and both basic science and applied research projects will be considered, providing the study has an essential focus on suicide or suicide prevention. In addition to U.S.-based applicants, AFSP grants and fellowships can be awarded to applicants at institutions outside the U.S., as well as to international applicants who are working at U.S. institutions.

AFSP offers six types of research grants:

Distinguished Investigator Grants of up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.

Standard Research Grants of up to $75,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level.

Linked Standard Research Grants for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.

Young Investigator Grants of up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator's research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the young investigator.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships of up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a progressive stipend of $42,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second, with an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.

Pilot Grants of up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.

Investigator Initiated Grant on Youth Settings

The William T. Grant Foundation supports work to improve the settings of youth between the ages of 8 and 25 in the United States. Ford Foundation Research on Sexuality and Youth

The Ford Foundation has announced a new Request for Proposals entitled "Sexuality, Health, and Rights Among Youth in the United States: Transforming Public Policy and Public Understanding Through Social Research" designed to support and prepare researchers to take on the challenges of social science sexuality research in the 21st century. The overall goal of the program is to strengthen the capacity of social science researchers to inform public policy and public understanding of sexuality-related issues from a human rights perspective.

Through this RFP the foundation will support research projects that combine three areas of activity: social science research; training of graduate students; and strategic communications to inform public policy or public conversations. Each project must include plans for all three areas of activity. Proposals that explore the role of structural inequalities, stigma and discrimination, and mechanisms of social exclusion related to gender, sexual orientation, class, race and ethnicity, and their intersections are of particular interest, as are proposals exploring how youth and adults in local communities seek to understand and address sexuality, health, and human rights through a range of individual and collective actions. Bringing Theory to Practice Research & Program Grants

The Association of American Colleges & Universities (AACU) has released new RFPs for the 2010 - 2012 grant cycle. Proposals are requested for projects during 2010-2012 that address one of the two following emphases: 1) Institutional efforts to examine, learn from and to make sustainable initiatives that foster the gains from the relationship between college students’ civic development and their psychosocial well-being; and 2) institutional ability to demonstrate the evaluation and sustainability of initiatives that address the increasing opportunities for students to have transformative educational experiences and for institutions to transform priorities and practices so as to make such experiences both expected and provided.

Mini-grants up to $2,500 are available to institutions initiating, or extending, conversations on their

campus that lead to the planning, implementation, or assessment of program or research projects directly related to the objectives of BTtoP and to either of the emphases for the 2010-2012 period.

Student programming grants are available under the Mini-grant category. These grants are available to student-led organizations or initiatives to develop programs for and by students that are consistent with the objectives of BTtoP.
