World Hunger~Global Starvation

The world is facing a hunger crisis unlike anything it has seen in more than 50 years.

925 million people are hungry.

Every day, almost 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes. That's one child every five seconds.

There were 1.4 billion people in extreme poverty in 2005. The World Bank estimates that the spike in global food prices in 2008, followed by the global economic recession in 2009 and 2010 has pushed between 100-150 million people into poverty.

Starvation results from the inadequate intake of nutrients or the inability to metabolize or absorb nutrients. It can have a number of causes such as prolonged fasting, anorexia, deprivation, or disease. No matter what the cause, starvation takes about the same course and consists of three phases. The events of the first two phases occur even during relatively short periods of fasting or dieting, but the third phase occurs only in prolonged starvation and can end in death.

During the first phase of starvation, blood glucose levels are maintained through the production of glucose from glycogen, proteins, and fats. At first glycogen is broken down into glucose. However, only enough glycogen is stored in the liver to last a few hours. Thereafter, blood glucose levels are maintained by the breakdown of proteins and fats. Fats are decomposed into fatty acids and glycerol. Fatty acids can be used as a source of energy, especially by skeletal muscle, thus decreasing the use of glucose by tissues other than the brain. Glycerol can be used to make a small amount of glucose, but most of the glucose is formed from the amino acids of proteins. In addition, some amino acids can be used directly for energy.

In the second stage, which can last for several weeks, fats are the primary energy source. The liver metabolizes fatty acids into ketone bodies that can be used as a source of energy. After about a week of fasting, the brain begins to use ketone bodies, as wells as glucose, for energy. This usage decrease the demand for glucose, and the rate of protein breakdown diminishes but does not stop. In addition, the proteins not essential for survival are used first.

The third stage of starvation begins when the fat reserves are depleted and there is a switch to proteins as the major energy source. Muscles, the largest source of protein in the body, are rapidly depleted. At the end of this stage, proteins, essential for cellular functions are broken down, and cell function degenerates.

In addition to weigh loss, symptoms of starvation include apathy, listlessness, withdrawal, and increased susceptibility to infectious disease. Few people die directly from starvation because they usually die of some infectious disease first. Other signs of starvation can include changes in hair color, flaky skin, and massive edema in the abdomen and lower limbs, causing the abdomen to appear bloated.

During the process of starvation, the ability of the body to consume normal volumes of food also decreases.

Foods high in bulk but low in protein content often cannot reverse the process of starvation. Intervention involves feeding the starving person low-bulk food that provides ample proteins and kilo-calories and is fortified with vitamins and minerals. The process of starvation also results in dehydration, and dehydration is an important part of intervention. Even with intervention, a victim may be so affected by disease or weakness that he cannot recover.

Beyond the Homeless Myth

People who don't have shelter are houseless - not homeless! Homelessness has nothing to do with a lack of shelter.

Define Homeless: 'An inadequate experience of connectedness with family and or community,' (Dominic Mapstone). This fact is now recognized by Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme.

If the problem was a lack of shelters for the homeless why aren't all the homeless shelter always full? During winter they are more busy but more shelters won't solve the problem.

So often on the street I've seen people shake a set of keys with a big smile on their face saying 'I've got a place.' But often they end up spending most of their time on the streets anyway because they just don't know anyone else other than other homeless people and an empty room is very lonely.

Homelessness is about a lack of connectedness. Belonging somewhere is about belonging with other people. Like belonging to a family or local community.

The largest social demographic in first world countries that experiences homelessness are actually elderly people who are houseful. Quite often their spouse has died and their children live at a distance. They feel the same loneliness and abandonment as the person living on the street.

People in institutions including prisons or juvenile justice centres often feel the same loneliness or more accurately experience homelessness as the only people they have contact with other than the other 'homeless' inmates are people paid to be a part of their life. These people are the equivalent of people who work in soup kitchens or shelters on the streets.

Cinta Adalah... (Love Is...) ialah sebuah cerita yang berkisar tentang cinta dan persahabatan. Cinta Adalah... atau tajuk asalnya Cinta Adalah : Buat Apa Saja Yang Difikirkan Perlu ditulis kerana aku merasakan cinta dan persahabatan ibarat ikatan yang tidak terpisahkan. Dalam Cinta Adalah...(Love Is...),watak utama dipegang oleh Erin Erina dan Vincent Tan. Erin Erina asalnya ialah seorang gadis yang ceria dan suka berjenaka serta tidak pernah lekang dengan senyum tawa dan usik manja. Seorang yang meminati muzik dan mahir menggunakan gitar akustik. Baginya, setiap manusia ada cara untuk meluahkan perasaan dan Erin Erina menemukannya dalam bait-bait lagu.Sewaktu di sekolah menengah, Erin Erina telah menghasilkan sebuah lagu yang berjudul “My Magical Journey” . “My Magical Journey” dihasilkan dengan bantuan Vincent Tan. Vincent Tan ialah ketua pancaragam dan konduktor koir di sekolah. Vincent Tan, lelaki Cina yang aktif bermuzik ialah seorang yang naif dan lurus. Tidak banyak bercakap, namun dialah pencetus idea muzikal di sekolah sehingga digelar Maestro Vincent. Boleh bermain hampir kesemua alat muzik, namun lebih meminati biola. Vincent Tan menyimpan perasaan terhadap Erin Erina dan tertarik kepada gadis itu buat pertama kalinya apabila Erin Erina berpindah ke sekolah tersebut. Apa yang membuatkan Vincent Tan tertarik ialah Erin Erina telah membawa gitar akustik bersama dengannya dan menyanyikan sebuah lagu yang berjudul “Nice To Meet You” sebagai salam perkenalan buat rakan-rakan. Persembahan Erin Erina mengagumkan semua orang. Cikgu Gordon, guru kelas dan juga guru muzik terpegun dengan bakat yang ada pada Erin Erina. Cikgu Gordon mencadangkan Erin Erina untuk menyertai Kelab Muzikal Sekolah tetapi Erin Erina menolak dengan alasan dia ingin bebas bermuzik dan tidak mahu terikat dengan Kelab Muzikal Sekolah. Cikgu Gordon terkilan dengan jawapan Erin Erina namun menerima keputusan tersebut dengan hati yang terbuka. Jawapan Erin Erina itu menyebabkan Vincent Tan hampa kerana dia ialah Pengerusi Kelab Muzikal Sekolah dan tentunya keputusan yang dibuat oleh Erin Erina menyukarkannya untuk mendekati gadis itu.Tapi, bagaimana akhirnya mereka boleh menghasilkan “My Magical Journey” bersama? ~^^

My Magical Journey

Am membuka pintu bilik. Dia memasuki ruang itu dengan rasa memberat. Am membuka suis lampu, kemudian mendekati katil. Menghempas punggungnya perlahan ke tilam. Melepas cermat kaca matanya, diletak bersebelahan dengan bantal, di sisi kiri. Selalu begitu. Walau risikonya untuk pecah memang tinggi, namun ia tidaklah setinggi bahaya yang hampir menempah nyatanya.

Am merebahkan diri ke tilam. Sedaya dia cuba mengatur pembaringan. Terlentang, miring, nampaknya dia gagal untuk menenangkan diri. Kenapa semua ini harus terjadi? Erina, gadis yang cukup terkenal sewaktu di sekolah menengah. Ceria, lincah, tidak kering dengan gurauan dan usik manja. Am masih ingat lagi, Erina pernah membuat persembahan solo akustiknya semasa sambutan Hari Guru peringkat sekolah. Erina membawa lagu, “My Magical Journey”. Liriknya tercipta asli oleh Erina sendiri. Melodinya juga disusun cermat oleh Erina, sambil dibantu oleh Vincent Tan, ketua pancaragam dan konduktor koir.

Vincent, lelaki Cina yang aktif bermuzik, adalah seorang yang naif dan lurus.

Tidak banyak bercakap, namun dialah pencetus idea muzikal di sekolah, sehingga diberi gelaran Maestro Vincent. Karya-karyanya menggetar rasa, mengubat jiwa. Sebenarnya, dalam diam Vincent menyimpan perasaan terhadap Erina. Sedikit cuma yang tahu akan hal ini. Hanya dua , Am dan Ronny. Dua orang yang sentiasa membantu dan mendorong Vincent dalam penghasilan karya-karyanya. Am, memberi gambaran dan ekspresi kepada Vincent, kemudian Vincent menterjemahnya dalam nota muzik. Ronny, cuba-cuba menyanyikan lirik yang dikarang oleh Vincent, di samping sering memberi kata-kata semangat kepada Vincent.

Vincent ialah ahli Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia. Pernah suatu ketika, Vincent berhasrat untuk menukar keahliannya kepada Pengakap untuk mendekati Erina. Ini kerana Erina ialah seorang ahli Pandu Putri, dan kebetulan Pandu Putri selalu mengadakan perkhemahan bersama dengan Pengakap. Namun, hasratnya terbatal setelah dinasihati oleh Am dan Ronny. Bagi Am, Vincent lebih menyerlah dalam Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia, dan ia bukan satu keputusan yang bijak daripada seorang yang cerdik dan pandai seperti Vincent. Ronny menyedarkan Vincent bahawa Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia memerlukan kepakarannya, dan untuk mendekati Erina, Vincent boleh menggunakan pendekatan lain. Peluang menghasilkan “My Magical Journey” bersama dengan Erina adalah sesuatu yang ditunggu-tunggu oleh Vincent.

Semacam satu rahmat, segalanya berjalan dengan lancar. Kata Vincent, Erina ada mengajaknya bersama untuk membuat persembahan. Namun, Vincent menolak dengan alasan “My Magical Journey” lebih indah,artistik, dan penuh penghayatan sekiranya hanya Erina yang membawanya. Pada hari persembahan, “My Magical Journey” tidak menghampakan. Sangat tidak. Petikan halus gitar oleh Erina, diiringi suara yang mendayu, mendamaikan hati segenap warga sekolah. “My Magical Journey”, suara hati Erina, dan pendaman rasa Vincent. Di mana Vincent? Sejenak, Am cuba menemukan jawapan terhadap persoalan itu. Ya, di mana lelaki itu sekarang?

Still shining bright after 110 years...

While the average hardware store light bulb lasts only 1,000 hours, this bright bulb has lasted 110 years... proving once again that they 'don't make them like they used to'.

On June 18, the world's oldest-known working light bulb reaches another milestone, and will begin its 110th year of operation.

The bulb holds the Guinness World Record, and has been illuminating local fire stations in Livermore, California since 1901, the year Queen Victoria died.

Lynn Owens, who heads the light bulb's centennial committee, told Time.com: 'Nobody knows how it's possible. It is a 60-watt bulb and it's only turned on for about four watts, but nobody knows why it keeps burning.

'We've had scientists from all over the country look at this light bulb'.

Time notes that the bulb has had a few dark patches over its long years. It had some 'initial glitches' during its first year, 'a fraught week in 1937 and some random power outages all the way up to 1970s'.

The longest time the Guinness World Record-holding bulb has ever been turned off for is just a week.

The famous bulb had originally been donated to the fire station, and was made by Adolphe Chailet, a competitor of Thomas Edison.

The light bulb has a fan club with thousands of members and its own website.

Dangling above the fire engines, people come for hundreds and thousands of miles to see the diminutive symbol.
