This week we had CFAC instructor Janet Britt on the show! Janet graduated from Hanover College and University of Louisville with a Masters Degree in Art Therapy; however, art education became her passion. She concluded nineteen years of teaching at St. Francis School in Goshen in 2010. Though St. Francis was “an incredibly rewarding experience”, her time to “color new squares” has led to several artist-in-residence projects with Jefferson County Public Schools, to Fall and Spring classes with the talented CFAC students, to individual and small classes at her private Mellwood Arts Center studio, and has left a little time for her own painting, as well. Janet appreciates the parents of CFAC students “for supporting this program and for encouraging their growing young artists”.

Janet selected one of her middle school student’s pieces for our interpretation today! Annie Michael created this piece for a Douglass Miller emulation assignment. Students were asked to paint on wood panels and leave the piece a bit “unfinished.”

High school work will be on display until the 21st, middle school work will be up from May 25th – June 4th, and elementary work will be up from June 8-19th. May 9th, 2014 – John Nation “Wrapped and Suspended”

For the past 30-years, John Nation worked as a photographer for the Louisville Magazine. He also worked as a free-lance photographer during his time with the magazine. He has been published regionally, nationally and internationally in many magazines and books including Time, Nation’s Business, Food Arts, and Landscape Architecture, Time Life’s “The Kentucky Derby”, Louisville, A River Serenade, The Dacian Chronicles, “Turning Heads: Portraits of Grace, Inspiration and Possibilities,” and many more.

John has had a number of one-person shows and has recently traveled to Russia, and Romania. He’s also photographed four presidents, spent a day covering Soviet Union Leader Mikhail Gorbachev, documented Humana’s helping hand in the hospitals of Romania and over a month on an elephant research project in Kenya. John has also photographed many celebrities and countless images of everyday folk.

He has won numerous awards for photography including being a repeated winner as Society of Professional Journalists’ Best Regional Magazine Photographer.

May 2nd, 2014 – HuskMitNavn “Wu Tan”

Danish Graffiti artist HUSKMITNAVN (RememberMyName) works in a multitude of media including, street art, paintings, drawings and graphics since the early nineties. He has marked his name both in Denmark and internationally by his controversial, humorous and political street art. His characteristic figures and comments are spread all over Europe and covers a wide area from graffiti in public space, illustrations for international magazines and newspapers into established settings as galleries and building adornments. By humorous reflections upon everyday life and politics, the art from HuskMitNavn involves society discourses. In a very personal style he comments on absurdities by stolid comments that give ‘food for thought’.

April 25th, 2014 – Brandon Bass “The Delicate Fabrics Too”

Brandon Bass is a mixed media artist and graphic designer currently living in Louisville, KY.

Like a crate of old vinyl contains samples for a music producer to rearrange into a chopped-and-screwed creation, a stack of magazines and paper ephemera from yesteryear serve as the palette for BBASS’ mixed media work. Combining this collage style with elements of typography gives each composition a message that attempts to unite the visual subject matter and communicate an idea that goes beyond the original intent of the 1950’s advertisements, newsprint, and illustrations employed in the designs. An avid wordsmith and graphic designer, the artist’s goal is to create images that elicit a visceral response immediately but also convey a sense of ambivalence and ambiguity through the use of unusual phraseology and wordplay. Unlike communication design, which requires that a specific message be delivered to a specific audience, BBASS’ work is intended to generate curiosity and lead viewers down several avenues of interpretation.

Stacey Reason is an artist and curator working in Louisville. Currently she is a candidate for a Master of Arts, Curatorial Studies, and Master of Public Administration, Nonprofit Management at the University of Louisville. She holds a BFA from Murray State University, where she was Magna Cum Laude. Her two-part thesis exhibition A Reckoning of Internal Affairs began at the Huff Gallery at Spalding University in March and will continue at and April 18 – May 30, 2014, New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, New Harmony, IN.

April 4th, 2014 – Sarah Havens – “If I had a boat”

Each of Haven’s hats is a unique creation often designed with a specific person in mind. Her handmade lids are characterized by embellishments that are sewn, not glued, so they can be changed for something new for every event. This versatility allows the hats to be worn for many different occasions and in various seasons.

“After each hat is formed in straw or felt, I then remove it from the block and cut away the parts that aren’t part of the design,” Havens explains. “I size the piece to an appropriate stiffness; add millinery wire to the brim to hold its shape; and then add the ‘sweatband’ inside the hat. From there, I add trim and lining, if needed. I then style the hat with the help of a little steam, and pinch it in certain places to ensure the hat compliments and frames the client’s face in the most attractive way.”

Havens’ hats are available at The Gift Horse in Louisville, KY and she will be a part of the KMAC Couture: Art Walks the Runway on April 11, 2014. She is also the featured artist at the Louisville Visual Art Association’s April Food for Thought: LUNCH & LEARN series. Havens will discuss her practice, including a live demonstration, and offer hats and fascinators from her most recent collection for sale at the Louisville Boat Club on April 8, Noon to 1:30PM. March 7th, 2014 – Julie Baldyga, “From the Large Sunglasses Series: Fuse Award”

Julie Baldyga works primarily in oil pastel. Many of her pieces depict women working on machines, engines, and motors. She is fascinated with electrical systems, and this focus on the way things work also applies to her soft sculptures— which are built from the inside out, so a sculpture of a person would have a liver and intestines inside, for example.

Julie is currently featured in a show at the Jewish Community Center along with other StudioWorks artists, and last November showed artwork at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. She also recently completed a large commission for the Big Ass Fan Company.

February 28th, 2014 – Marc Murphy

This week we tried something a little different. A couple weeks ago Jonathan Bastian interviewed Marc Murphy, the editorial cartoonist for the Courier Journal, about his style and process as an event to pair with the On the Strip exhibit at PUBLIC gallery. This week’s show paired clips from that interview with a few songs inspired by his political cartoons.

Marc Murphy’s editorial cartoons are published 5 times each week in the Louisville Courier-Journal and at courier-journal.com. They are reproduced in Gannett newspapers around the country. He is also a practicing trial attorney in federal and state courts. His mother was an accordion player and his father hosted dance parties on TV, and it is entirely possible his art is an effort to deal with this. It is, at a minimum, not out of the question.

He was raised in Northeastern Kentucky, attended Notre Dame, served in the Army in Germany and Central America, and held political office in Louisville. He is a liberal. Or a progressive. Or both.

February 21st, 2014 – Bob Lockhart “Untitled”

Whether it’s wood, bronze, clay or oil pencil, Lockhart is well known for his highly individual style that blends humor, irony, and fantasy to unsettle our usual view of the world and of art itself. In his most recent collection of drawings, Lockhart continues his life-long fascination with the humorous and the irreverent, and the absurd, by stretching the limits of imagination with a vibrant, colorful never-never land where a fish can swim out of a man’s necktie, and ferns can grow into fingers.

Lockhart’s own artistic roots can be traced to the renowned Hairy Who of Chicago, a group of highly creative artists with whom he studied, who forged a reputation for creating cartoony worlds of humor, irreverence, and fantasy to comment on the human condition. “Creativity comes from being frustrated by the things we see in the world around us,” says Lockhart, who taught at Bellarmine University for more than 40 years. “Art is a way of getting those feelings out, of expressing those frustrations.”

Lockhart attended the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA 1964, MFA 1966). His drawings are represented in major museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago. His sculptures are in the collections of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, the Louisville Zoo, and Bellarmine University, among others. Lockhart established the art department at Bellarmine University in 1967 and taught there until 2010. Now a professor emeritus, Lockhart continues to teach in Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

“Musings,” a solo exhibit of Lockhart’s recent drawings and clay sculptures will open November 20 at Pyro Gallery, 909 East Market Street, Louisville, Kentucky. An opening reception for the artist will be held on February 21 from 5-9 p.m. Lockhart will also give an artist’s gallery talk at Pyro Gallery on March 15 at Noon. The public is invited.

Bob Lockhart is a participating artist in Art [squared], LVAA’s “anonymous art” exhibition/sale showcasing the work of 200+ artists. March 15, 10am–1pm, PUBLIC gallery. Proceeds benefit the Children’s Fine Art Classes program.

February 14th, 2014 – Victor Sweatt, “Sacred Waters”

This week we welcomed Victor Sweatt onto PUBLIC. He selected one of his works, “Sacred Waters” and helped us with the playlist as well! He says, “Created in watercolor and colored pencil, “Sacred Waters” is about the cleansing of the spirit. Water is formless but has many characteristics such as stillness, but there is also a constant flow that can wear down the rocks of river banks or in heavy volumes move whatever is in its path or simply go around it. I perceive spirituality is the same way, being formless and able to adapt to any condition that arises. In this picture I have several figures achieving stillness and letting things be as they become part of the spiritual waters simply moving through life.”
