Lang.NET is a forum for discussion of programming languages, managed execution environments, compilers, multi-language libraries, and integrated development environments. The old URL however will still remain to work, so no need to update your favorites (except if you want to ofcourse).

I would very much like to know what you think of the new design. You can use the ‘Get in Touch’ box below to contact me directly. There will probably still be some bugs in the beginning so please bear with me as I keep on training the monkeys.

That’s it for now! See you soon…

Kumo — at least as it was conceived by Microsoft initially — was not simply a codename. It was one of a handful of new brand names (the other two I heard about being “Hook” and “Bing”) which Microsoft was considering as new potential branding candidates for “Live Search.”

I’m still thinking Kumo is likely to be the new name for Microsoft’s Live Search because, would you rather “Kumo” it than “Live Search” it?

BoomTown’s Kara Swisher posted Microsoft’s internal memo on Kumo, but more importantly posted three screen shots. All are worth a look. The interface has good groupings, a friendly nav and appears to integrate some of the look and feel that the Powerset acquisition provided.

Here are the three screenshots too:

According to the project site on codeplex:

A powerful and extensible .NET web content syndication framework for RSS, Atom, OPML, APML, BlogML, RSD and more. The Argotic Syndication Framework is a Microsoft .NET class library framework that enables developers to easily consume and/or generate syndicated content from within their own applications. The framework makes the reading and writing syndicated content in common formats such as RSS, Atom, OPML, APML, BlogML, and RSD very easy while still remaining extensible enough to support common/custom extensions to the syndication publishing formats. The framework includes out-of-the-box implementations of the most commonly used syndication extensions, network clients for sending and receiving peer-to-peer notification protocol messages; as well as HTTP handlers, modules, services and controls that provide rich syndication functionality to ASP.NET developers.

So if you need something like this as well, go take a look at it at codeplex.

Today at Mobile World Congress Microsoft announced a new free service called My Phone. The service is available as part of a limited beta, meaning it’s possible you might get temporarily waitlisted, but the queue should progress quickly as things ramp up. Now, some of you might have heard rumors about it last week and already have questions, while others might just be curious what My Phone is all about. I took some time to talk with the team responsible for the product and hopefully this post will answer your questions and give you an idea what to expect from the service.

So, what is Microsoft My Phone? Well, basically it consists of a password-protected web site and an on-device application, which together will help you back-up, restore, and manage your mobile phone data. If you’ve ever wanted to save your text messages, hated re-entering all your contact information when you bought a new phone, or wished you could easily archive some of your pictures, then I think you’re about to be happy.

From the main site, getting started is as simple as entering your Windows Live ID. After you’re signed in to the web site, you’ll need to download the application to your Windows Mobile phone. You can either navigate to an installation link using your phone’s browser or you can have a link text messaged to your phone.

Once the application is installed on your phone, setting things up is pretty easy. You’ll need to enter your Windows Live ID and select your synchronization method, but after that the application does pretty much everything for you. By default, My Phone synchronizes contacts, calendar appointments, tasks, photos, videos, text messages, music, and documents that are stored on the device. If you want to synchronize items from a storage card you’ll need to change your My Phone settings, but it is possible. For more specifics on what can and can not be synchronized, see the My Phone information page.

When setup is complete, your phone will begin to synchronize with the online website. You don’t have to watch, but it’s kind of interesting and doesn’t really take that long if you want to stick it out. As you can see below, my first synchronization was successful and, among other things, backed up 144 text messages. Let’s go see what that looks like online.

After logging into the My Phone site, you’ll see a pretty clean interface. The My Phone service provides users with 200 MB of storage. As you can see below, synchronized data is broken up into relevant categories on the left hand side of the screen. For now, let’s take a look at my Text Messages as an example of how your data would be accessible.

Clicking on the Text Messages category, you’ll be presented with your most recent text messages. The rest can be seen by using the page drop down menu, in this case I’m on page 1 of 10. Taking a look at the screen you’ll notice a couple of things. When you click on a specific text message, you’ll see on the right side of the screen that you have the ability to delete it or archive it to the web. The little device icon on each row, indicates that all of my text messages are currently synchronized. If they were archived, you’d see a little box with an arrow. Archived means that the text message is removed from the phone and stored on the web. Anything that is archived can later be restored to the phone. You’ll also notice that you have the ability to search your text messages and filter them by type (sent/received/draft).

Switching over to videos, you’ll notice that the interface is similar, but not quite the same. Unlike text messages, for videos you’ll have the additional ability to upload to the web site for synchronization and download from the web site to your computer for local viewing. Documents, music, and photos all essentially work the same way.

The calendar, like contacts and tasks, presents a third interface that is slightly different from the others. For these categories, in addition to the functionality you’d expect, you have the added ability to create new records. These new contacts, appointments, and tasks can then be synchronized to the device.

I know that was a quick overview of what the My Phone service offers, but hopefully it helped some. If you have questions please feel free to post them as comments and we’ll try to get you an answer. You can also get more information at the My Phone team blog and the My Phone forum.

Or maybe you want to learn or teach C# your self and are coming from a Java background. Well I have found the free resource for you. Rob Miles who wrote the free “C# Yellow Book” text book that I have written about before has a new free book out. This one is called the C Sharp from Java Orange Book And of course the book has an orange color.

The book (<500kb and about 27 pages) includes a host of “how do I” questions and answers that should be most helpful for people moving from Java to C#. The two languages are a lot a like in many ways but there are those little differences that can easily bite someone making a transition. Rob’s got a great collection here and I rate this as a must have for people doing both Java and C#. Thanks Rob!

When Michel and I arrived there we decided to start off with a breakfast because we were both quite hungry and we hadn’t had food since well like 6 hours Almost immediately I was phoned by Brian and Yousef where we were, and so we met all the Dutch MSP’s.

So fast forward to Barcelona it was really nice weather about 20 degrees and nice sunshine so that was already a vast improvement over Amsterdam where we had heavy showers on departure, so we’re off to a good start here.

After doing some initial shopping and another breakfast at Mc Donalds at the Sagrada Familia we went over to the CCIB Conference center. where we were just in time for the keynote by Jason Zander, General Manager for Visual Studio.

We’ve made a lot of photo’s and already did some interviews which will be up on Channel 8 and DotNetSkool.nl sometime next week probably.

Tonight we had diner with Microsoft Netherlands including all Dutch MSP’s which was really nice, who doesn’t love tapas ;).

So now I’m off to bed, because tomorrow will be another long day. I’ll try and keep you guy’s posted, so please keep checking back.

So today was the first event of an Academic Tour through The Netherlands. The kickoff of the Academic Tour was held at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam and was pretty successful if you ask me. There were about 60 students attending and a bunch of Microsoft employees.

A couple of presentations were given one of which by Paul van Wingerden about Business Intelligence mainly about what it is, why it’s useful for large enterprises and how you can manipulate large piles of data into meaningful information for your company.

Secondly there was a presentation about the Unified Communications platform provided by Microsoft, and Matthijs Hoekstra had some pretty cool demo’s and showed a really cool app which leveraged the ‘presence’ of people using things like Messenger and Live Communications. Very cool stuff.

Finally we had some good conversations with students about the Imagine Cup and Microsoft in general. Oh and before I forget there was an announcement which basically means that if you’re a Dutch student, you can get a FREE hosting on Windows Server 2008 including and also FREE domain name! For more information about that, click here.

All in all a pretty good event, so see you at the next Academic Event at the University of Delft 19th of November.

Now everybody’s a bit disappointed the new taskbar is not included in that build.. or is it?

Rafael of WithinWindows.com has been peeking around in the Win7 bits and has found out that the new taskbar is actually included in the build, but disabled… nobody knows yet why they did that (they being Microsoft here).

So if you have the PDC build, and want to enable the new Taskbar, go check it out!
