According to the Straits Times story (by Cheryl Faith Wee) celebrating the fact that the pieces have been made accessible by the public,

"Once Upon A Time consists of four bronze statues of children sitting comfortably with books in hand, on marble bases shaped like animals or clouds. There are also five other marble sculptures in shapes such as a turtle and a fish.

Chong, 66, says he installed the marble bases 'in such a way that people can actually sit on them and read and be immersed in their own little world. I do not want to keep people away from my works'."

Begs the question of why the works were behind glass from 2005 to 2012. The garden was closed off to the public all this time.

The works haven't moved, rather I didn't include them earlier as they were not very visible from the public areas of the National Library Building on Middle Road. According to the Straits Times of April 16, 2012, the works are now accessible. No explanation given for the change, but it is a welcome one. Fah Cheong's works are meant to be approached.

by Min Chen

Inspired by the Artist's explorations in Origami, the Art of Paperfolding, the central focus of this stainless steel sculpture, of approximately 5000kg in weight and 8.2m in height, is a cube with every two of its adjacent faces connected by a series of radiating planes. These plans form three interlocking wheels, the sizes of which vary as a function of the square root of two.

The mathematical concept of Root 2 is used to signify the infinite changes in modenr technology, the infinite creativity in technical education and infinite expansion of human potential through technical training. These, as symbolized by the three interrelated wheels, represent a flexible and relevant ITE.

Root 2 was officially unveiled on
19 january 1997 by
Mr Eric Gwee Tech Hai, Chairman, Board of Governors,

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part,"
- Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games

This installation is made up of photos of more than 3,000 athletes who formed lasting friendships through Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. These athletes competed in 26 Olympic sports and participated in a Culture and Education Programme. Through the 12 days of the Games, atheletes learned about and expressed the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect.

These photos, contributed by a group of young volunteer photographers, capture the inspiring and memorable moments experienced by the athletes.

There are other elements to include, but I had a decent photo of the "photolandscape" mural.
Artist: Han Sai Por (b. 1943)
Title & Year: Progressive Flow (2004)
Medium: Granite
Stone sizes: 2.3(w) x 2.3(h) x 1.2(d) m ~ 2.3(w) x 0.7(h) x 1.0(d) m

Commissioned by Singapore Labour Foundation

Cultural Medallion winner Han Sai Por is recognised as one of Singapore's foremost sculptors, noted for her works in stone. These six solid granite blocks weight no less than 55 tons, yet in Han's hands, they curve and flow with a rhythmic grace.

Voids and gaps between the blocks allow people to walk through, around and in-between the artwork - it is a spatial play that encourages viewers to join in and participate. Even the wave-like blocks are positioned for people to enjoy as resting places and seats. Commissioned by SLF as an artwork for the public, these elements come together in a sculpture that invites interaction, exploration and discovery.

From the press release issued by Marina Bay Sands:

The Wind Arbor is the largest and most visible piece of Marina Bay Sands Art Path. It covers 6,800 square meters, equivalent to the surface area of 5 and 1/2 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The sculpture consists of 260,000 aluminum metal "flappers" covering the entire western façade of the Hotel Atrium facing the Central Business District and encircling the air-conditioning towers at the north end of the resort.

When the flappers move, they reflect light creating a shimmering piece of art.

It is 15 meters tall at the north end and rises to 55 meters at the southern entry.

The flappers are mounted on hinges and hung from steel cable so they are free to move independently in reaction to wind movements.

Beneficence 3, 2005
Stoneware

These three hand-thrown pots by Cultural Medallion winner, Iskandar Jalil, were commissioned for the launch of construction works on Marina Barrage and unveiled by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew in 2005.

They are made from local clay and signify the three pillars of Singapore's well-being - commerce, culture and the environment. They also represent the three benefits of the barrage: water supply, flood control and lifestyle attraction. They were fired at a temperature of 1000°C before being glazed with Iskandar's signature colour and re-fired at 1300°C.

The installation is designed to promote a sense of tranquility in activity. The shape and colour of the pots convey tranquility while the flowing of the water represents activity.
