Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that is caused from the radioactive decay of uranium.  This decay occurs naturally in the soil, which then enters homes and businesses through cracks in the foundation, floors, spaces around utility pipes and through crawl spaces.

Long term Radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer among smokers.

Colorado’s geological makeup causes our state to be at high risk for Radon.  The Radon gas moves throughout the soil, so you never know where it will exit from.  One home may have a high radon level, and the home next door may be at a safe level.

The City of Pueblo along with Citizens for Clean Air in Pueblo for Education, CCAP_ERA have teamed to educate local residents of the dangers of Radon in the home.  Of the 1600 home in Pueblo County that have been tested, over 70 % of them had elevated, unsafe levels of Radon.

To find out if you have high levels of Radon in your home, CCAP-ERA is offering free Radon Testing Kits to all Pueblo County residents.  All test kits used to test radon levels during the month of January will be entered for a chance to win a pize valued at $50.

To get your free testing kit, you can go to the Citizens for Clean Air office, lacoated at 301 N./ Main St. Ste 101 or call 252-6258.  You can also pick up a testing kit at the Pueblo Health Department (583-4924)

Once you have the results of your Radon test, call Webbs Radon Service (they are a certified EPA mitigator) to go over the options available to mitigate your home.  They can put your home at a safe level within a couple of days.  You owe your self and your family the assurance that the air you are breathing in your home is safe!

Eligibility requirement: - you maybe eligible for LEAP assistance if:

You are a U.S. Citizen and a resident of Colorado

• You pay heating fuel costs directly to an energy provider or pay the cost of heating your dwelling with your rent, or in addition to rent.
• Your gross monthly household income falls within the guidelines set annually and posted no later than November 1st of each year. “Household” means the people who reside with you within your dwelling at which you reside and apply for assistance and for whom you as applicant have financial resposibility for. The maximum gross income is based on 150%* of the federal poverty level as follows:

*Reduced from 185% to 150% due to a reduction in federal funding
New legislation was passed that requires a participant to provide additional documents when applying.A completed and signed affidavit.

1. A completed, signed and dated affidavit.
2. A readable copy of a photo identification

• A Colorado Drivers License
• A Colorado Identification card
• A U.S. Military or dependent card
• A U.S. Merchant Marine card

Any other document authorized by rules adopted by the Department of Revenue.

If you are eligible for LEAP you may qualify for emergency assistance for help in repair or replacement of your primary heating system.

If you are eligible for LEAP you may qualify for free furnace and weatherization services for you rhome through the Energy Saving Partners program. For more information please call 866-HEATHELP.

Pueblo County has lost 2,600 jobs since 2008 and unemployment has been 10% or higher for much of the year.

Home permits for the first six months of the year had reached 70 permits.

Retail sales in Pueblo County was up 2.7% from the fist six months of the previous year.

Some of the areas largest global companies didn’t fare much better with Vestas posting a 48% decline in stock value, while Rocky Mountain Steel posted a 22% decline. Other companies posting losses on that list included; Sears/Kmart, KMG Chemicals, Wells Fargo, GCC, Black Hills Energy, Target, Ingersoll-Rand/Trane, Convergys, AT&T, US Bank and Express Scripts.

As of May, Pueblo was showing a jobless rate of 10.1%, with an estimated 7,600 people unemployed, the highest of any metro area in Colorado.
