Please wear your green shirts or pick one

    On the agenda will
be Black Hills’ second reading and vote on an ordinance approving an agreement between the City of
Pueblo, and Black Hills Colorado Electric, LLC, prohibiting
municipalization of electric utility service until 2030 in return for a bunch of (mostly empty)
promises. This agreement would only go into effect only if the voters vote
against public power, but the giveaways will look like another alternative
to public power. Don’t be fooled! They are nothing compared to the millions
we will save year after year by turning to a public power utility.

    Also on the agenda
is the first reading of the Mayor’s Plan for Public Power. The plan is a
proposal to let the citizens decide on public power in a vote on May 5th.
The campaign supports this plan! It sets up the Pueblo Water Board as a
Water and Electric Board, with elected board members not under the control
of City Council or the mayor. It authorizes the Water and Electric Board to
buy Black Hills’ poles and lines (and more!) It allows them to contract
with another entity to manage and operate the utility if they so choose. It
allows them to borrow money to buy the Black Hills system at low interest
rates and pay it back over time with our electric bill money. It’s a good
    plan.

    The Council will
vote on this plan and the proposal to let the citizens vote on it on
Monday, February 10th at 7:00 PM. Mark your calendar! But also, the city
council could discuss this plan and try to amend it at next Mondays’
council meeting. We’ll be there to let them know how we feel about those
    changes!

you dislike the ordinance Black Hills Energy is proposing please show the
    Council how you feel.

    They only see around
20-25 people supporting Public Power. Black Hills Energy has been filling
the chambers at every City Council meeting concerning this issue. Lets get

Those of us who have lived here all our lives know that it’s pretty cheap to live here. Of course, the median income is the lowest on the top 10 lists of cities.

According to MSN.Realestate.com we ranked number 2 on the lowest cost of living in the nation

We compiled our rankings based on the ACCRA Cost of Living Index produced by the Council for Community and Economic Research. The index measures relative price levels for housing, utilities, transportation, groceries, health care and miscellaneous goods and services (it does not include taxes). A composite score of 100 reflects the national average. Scores lower than 100 reflect a lower-than-average cost of living, and scores higher than 100 reflect a higher-than-average cost of living. Median household income and average home prices are from the Toronto-based Martin Prosperity Institute. We sampled all U.S. cities with metropolitan area populations of at least 75,000.

Kiplingers rated us #7

Although it’s just 100 miles from Denver, Pueblo is an economic hub of southeastern Colorado with a much lower cost of living. Homes here are cheaper, on average, than in the rest of the state—and the nation. In fact, you can get a house in Pueblo for $87,000 less than the U.S. average. That’s a good thing since the city’s median household income is the lowest on our list, and grocery, utility and transportation costs are among the highest. There’s no charge, of course, for mountain views, and several national parks and forests are within easy driving distance.

Bloomberg rated us #2

The Pueblo metropolitan statistical area in southeastern Colorado is a regional transportation and retail center. Major employers include the Parkview Medical Center, public schools, and county government, according to the Pueblo Economic Development Corp. The cost of living in the area is the second lowest in the U.S., mostly due to low housing costs, which C2ER estimates are nearly 30 percent lower than the national average. Median household income in the area is $40,805, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

I got this information in my e-mail today and thought I should share this with all those Pueblo Colorado businesses. It appears identity theft can extend to your business. That’s definitely news to me.

Here is the email I got from the Secretary of the State of Colorado.

A Message from Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler

Business identity theft is a new and growing crime. Thieves hijack a business’s identity by fraudulently filing a document with the Secretary of State and using that identity to establish lines of credit with banks or retailers. Identity thieves use the credit lines to purchase commercial electronics, home improvement materials, gift cards, or other items that are easily resold. Each victim has the potential for hundreds of thousands of dollars in credit charges, many hours lost to recover from the fraud, and reputation damage.

But, Colorado has been a national leader in combating this threat. And, the Secretary of State’s office has several tools to help you protect your business.

Protect your business with Secure Business Filing.
Help protect your business records from unauthorized changes by setting up free password protection with our Secure Business Filing system at www.sos.state.co.us/pubs/business/ProtectYourBusiness/secureFiling.html.

What is Secure Business Filing?

Secure Business Filing provides optional password protection for your business record. By creating a Secure Business Filing account, you can control who is able to make changes to your record.

How do I sign up?

See instructions for setting up a Secure Business Filing Record at www.sos.state.co.us/pubs/business/ProtectYourBusiness/createAccount.html, or watch our demonstration at http://vimeo.com/36032152.
