The last two months have been spectacular on the island. Well there have been many migratory birds, both common and rare sightings. One in particular caught my attention and was the sighting of a Parasitic Jaeger(stercorarius parasiticus) on the coast of Arecibo. After some friends inform me, I made several attempts to find him but were unsuccessful. This bird had only a couple of sightings for the island. But this year there were surprises.

The parasitic Jaeger is a bird, which honor its name, follows the of terns group to take their fishing or food. Due to the severe storms and hurricanes formed this year in both the Caribbean and the Gulf, large numbers of terns were on their way south were diverted to the Caribbean.

After 2 weeks of the first sighting in Arecibo, my friends saw again, not one but 3 Parasitic Jaeger. That same day there is another in Barceloneta, this time I was lucky to see it, finally. This one was diferent to the ones observed in Arecibo, as those observed at Arecibo were light morph and the one i saw was a dark morph. I Achieve take a picture of Jaeger chasing a group of terns. In the picture manages to distinguish its distinctive white markings on the wings.

Then 2 weeks later, was reported another in Añasco, for a total of 4 Parasitic Jaeger in the Puerto Rico this year. We also managed to see several Black Terns, rare sightings for the island. Another sighting was a spectacular Buff-Brest Sandpiper. We observe in the town of Toa Alta. This is the first record of this species on the island.

I have a few post late, I hope to put my blog this week to daily. I been a little busy as well since my computer was damaged I haven't installed photoshop. So I have many photos to edit. I have to write some things from before the storm Irene hit the island. I hope in the coming days put an on top of what's happening on the island with the birds. My favorite time of year is here, the arrival of migratory warblers. I hope this year we have some surprises.

Getting Back on Birding ( Resume after Hurricanes Irene)

A week after Hurricane Irene passed through the island I'm back. I'll try to summarize what happened on the island ah after the hurricane.

Although was heading as a tropical storm in the course of entering the island was developed as a hurricane category one. The northwest and west of the island did not suffered the onslaught of much wind.. But the east and northeast of the island suffered a lot. Many roads were impassable, either due to flooding as fallen trees and landslides. About 600,000 people were without electricity, now has nearly restored throughout the island. Heavy rains caused extensive flooding. In some municipalities fell to 17 inches of rain. 20 million were lost in agriculture and 500 million in infrastructure.

President of the United States, Barack Obama said in Puerto Rico as an area of "major disaster", so the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA, for its acronym in English) of the Department of Homeland Security of the United States announced that federal disaster assistance is available to the government of Puerto Rico to complement the efforts of state and local recovery in the area impacted by Hurricane Irene during the period of August 21, 2011 onwards.

Birding Day at Camuy

Well, have past much days that I do not post anything about my "birding" in Puerto Rico. And these last few days have been productive with seabirds like terns, sandpipers and plovers. On Wednesday July 27, I was with some friends at the town of Camuy. There are 3 main places we visited: 2 ponds and the river mouth. It was a very productive day as we see more than 40 epecies, two rare Included.

Little Egret

The day start rainy, but still we wait for a while and them we go down to watch. Commencing at the mouth of Rio Camuy, where we saw several species of terns including Least Tern, one of my favorite especie of terns. We saw Wilson Plover in the area . Then in the ponds we saw a Little Egret (Egretta garzeta) which is a rare sighting, although Earlier this year was seenone too in the same area. Also between 358 Swallows Cave, that we count, was a Cuban Martin (Progne cryptoleuca). We also found a White-cheeked Pintail with 14 ducklings.

Well, the last 2 months I have been disconnected. My computer crashed, so I could not write anything on my blog. Although I have not been birding a lot, but if I have several pictures of which I would like to write. Fix my computer so I hope in the coming days i update the blog a bit.

Looking for the Tricolored Munia

Today i was back on the Caño Tiburones. In search of the Tricolored Munia (Lonchura malacca). A Finch that for a long time have not been seen in Puerto Rico, and we found a group last week, me and some friends. I had the luck to find them again today, and in the same place where we saw last week. I think they are nesting in the grassland because they did not move far from the area. Although I could see 8, i could not photograph them because they hide a lot and they are a bit sneaky. I will keep going this week to get a clear picture, but I photographed a female Orange Bishop.

Great Day at Caño Tiburones

Today I had a great day in the Caño Tiburones. I see 2 new species for my list, the Yellow-breasted Crake and Tricolored Munia. The Tricolored Munia is not common in Puerto Rico. For some years that this species were not observed in the island. I could not take pictures but tomorrow will come back to the same place where we saw and I will do everything possible to take pictures without disturbing them of course.

Cueva del Indio!

Cueva del Indio is a historic site located on the north coast of Puerto Rico, in the town of Arecibo. As its name Indian Cave (cueva del indio) is a small cave in which we find hieroglyphics made by the Taino Indians who once inhabited the island. But besides their historical value, also has a natural intervals.

There are two enormous cliffs that serve as nesting grounds for Bridle Tern and the White-tailed Tropicbird. Only a few weeks ago they started to arrive to this place. But today I counted a group of 17 Bridle Tern and 6 White-tailed Tropicbird.

Nice Birding in the afternoon

Today in the afternoon, after a cloudy day, I decided to go for a small birding. I thought I would not see muchbut the birds give you surprises. I counted 26 species. Visit the mouth of the river Manatí, and found a largenumber of shorebirds. But the best of the day was a group of 11 Roseate Tern. This species is listed it by thefederal goverment as a Threatened species in Puerto Rico. Roseate Terns banded as far north as Mine Have Been Recovered in Puerto Rico. Let up a group photo of 11 across the river, on the side a photo of 2 who came tothe shore where I was.

Taking care Bananaquit chicks

A few days ago, a cousin of mine found in backyard banaquit a nest with 2 chicks. As did not see the parents decided to take them to his home and fed with baby food and has resulted. Now the chicks have feathers and soon will be ready for them to be released. I loved this because my cousin has only 10 years and is already interested in birds, few of their age are interested in birds and the environment here in Puerto Rico.

Not just for the birds

Something caught my attention is the presence of lizards in my hummingbird feeder. Apparently for these nectar feeders is not just for birds. I observed several species of lizards in my backyard. But this particular species, the Anolis stratulus, they love this nectar, and I have counted up to 5 in one nectar feeder. I try to find a little more information about this lizard, but not found much. I found nothing to explain to me why he likes both this nectar. But still I find it interesting.

A little Birding at Caño Tiburones

Well today I woke up very early and I went birding for one of my favorite places: “El caño Tiburones”. El Caño Tiburones is one of the biggest estuarine wetlands of Puerto Rico. Its ecological value makes it unique for their size and their hydrological, geological and biotic. A variety of species associated with these systems use the Caño Tiburones as their main habitat. Caño Tiburones Nature Reserve is considered an important area for wildlife. It is home to about 206 bird species, 26 families of insects, reptiles, 6, 9 crustaceans, 21 species of fish, including native animals, endemic, migratory, rare or endangered species and other commercial and recreational importance.

This is one of my favorite places to go bird watching, as I said before. And today I had a good day even though I was only a little while, I saw 37 species of birds and take these pictures I share with you. And also I put the list of birds observed.

Banded Ruddy Turnstone 2

Some days ago I wrote about two Ruddy Turnstone with bands that I saw on the beach of Barceloneta. Well today I received the certificate of the second Ruddy Turnstone that I saw that day. This one was banded in CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NEW JERSEY, USA, hatched in 2000 and is a female. I am get quite a thrill today to receive the notification and also do this to document this bird with band. I've grown fond of this flock of Ruddy Turnstone since arrive every year to Puerto Rico. I have a picture of one of these birds in 2009. That means that every year after they nest in the north, they return to PR. Every year when the flock reaches the coast of Barceloneta I go out to observe and photograph, and will continue each year.

The Flamingo of Camuy

Puerto Rico receives various bird visitors a year, sightings can be categorized as rare. And sometimes they stay, and As it says the title of this post we talk about a Flamingo. On January 23, 2009 came to our island a Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber). It is not the first time we received the visit of a Flamingo, actually in Puerto Rico used to be a Flamingo population in early twentieth century but was extirpated by hunting. Usually, when a flamingo comes to PR, visit the Southwest of Puerto Rico, an area with many wetlands and salt flats.

What is special about this Flamingo which arrived in 2009? Well, Came to Stay. This Flamingo reach the town of Camuy in the northern zone of Puerto Rico. He has stay at the pond "los Amadores”, and felt comfortable in Puerto Rico because it fulfilled 2 years and 2 months since he arrived at the island. The residents gave him an great host to the flamingo, you can see that even after 2 years, people stop to see this pink bird. On occasion the pond dries, he moves to the pond "yeguada" that is very close to where the flamingo, but when it rains and turns to fill the pond "amador" back to there. Already has a name, they say the "El Flamenco de Camuy "(The Flamingo of Camuy). Is rare has decided to stay by himself, therefore the flamingos usually live in communities of hundreds of individuals. But we are pleased that this has chosen to live on our island, I leave 2 photos to be enjoyed.

Banded Ruddy Turnstone

On March 24, i observed and photographed a group of 65 Ruddy Turnstone in Barceloneta PR, and between them two of them had bands in there legs. I was so excited so did my best to take photos of the bands. I managed to get pictures in which the bands were visible, and made a report to the USGS in reportbad.gov. And one of the Turnstone was marked by the year 2008 in the U.S. state of Delaware. Although the Ruddy Turnstone is very common but doing this I get very excited and will continue doing when i found some other bird band and I recommend to do it.

Backyard for the Birds part I

A while ago I decided to fix my backyard to attract more birds. So I set to work, and I'm still working on it and still much work to do. . I have concentrated on planting many plants that give many flowers as well as fruit trees.

I also put some seed feeders, as well as nectar feeder. The purpose of this nectar feeder is to feed the hummingbirds, but in Puerto Rico very few people used to put these nectar feeders so the hummingbirds here are not used to them so when I put mine, gave me work "to train them. " At first only the Bananaquit came to the nectar feeder, but after 3 or 4 months of patient waiting for the first time came one Antillean mango, a species endemic to the Antilles, and I take a photo, but not too good but you can see in the feeder.

Un Vistaso al Mar/ A look at Sea

-Español- Saludos a todos los que entran en mi blog, esta vez daremos un pequeño vistaso a algunas aves marinas (Solo algunas por que si las presento todas nunca acabaría) que se puedan ver en nuestra hermosa isla. Primero empezaré con una de mis favoritas y que de echo la primera ave marina o costera que fotografié y observé: el Ostrero Americano/Haematopus palliatus.

El Ostrero es un ave de tamaño mediano (43 cm) que frecuenta las las playas arenosas y lodosas.

Tiene los ojos amarillos con el borde rojo y las patas de un color rosado claro. Su cabeza es toda negra y el manto lo tiene de color marrón oscuro. El pecho lo tiene de color blanco y presenta una entrada blanca sobre el ala (que lo distingue de otra especie parecida que habita en las costas del sur de Chile y Argentina, el Ostrero Austral). Cuando vuela se le ve una banda blanca en las secundarias. La cola la tiene marrón oscuro con blanco en la base.

El pico es largo y rojo anaranjado y achatado por los costados, característica de esta familia de aves que han desarrollado para poder abrir conchas o extraer crustáceos adheridos a las rocas.

Se alimenta de ostras que abre con su fuerte pico y de invertebrados marinos como muy-muyes. Como muchos playeros, las horas en que se alimenta depende de las mareas. Descansa en marea alta y se alimenta entre mareas. Es atraído por bancos de arena expuestos en donde descansa, se limpia las plumas o duerme, muchas veces cerca a bandadas de gaviotas, gaviotines o de otros playeros pero siempre manteniendo su distancia.

Emite una serie de fuertes silbidos al levantar el vuelo: "pirip-pirip-pirip-pirip", así como unos silbidos largos y agudos: "uuiiiit".

El Ostrero habita en la mayoría de las costas del continente americano, en el Atlántico desde Nueva York y en el oeste a partir de California y a lo largo de todo Centro y Sudamérica. El Ostrero necesita un área con largas extensiones de costas y planicies costeras que no hayan sido modificadas por el hombre. Es mayormente sedentario (no migra) y nunca se aleja mucho de la costa.

Ostrero Americano/American Oystercatcher

Proximo le sigue la Gaviota Gallega/Larus atricilla, es una gaviota común en las áreas costeras de norteamericana en verano. Se reconoce por su muy oscura "capucha". Aprovecha la más mínima oportunidad de alimentarse: sigue al arado para coger gusanos del suelo, rebusca entre los desechos que la mar arroja a la orilla, y sigue a los barcos pesqueros. Las colonias de cría se localizan en pantanos, en el litoral y en islas cercanas a tierra firme.Esta foto de la Gaviota gallega es de mi querido amigo Gabriel Lugo.

Gaviota Gallega/Larus atricilla

Continuamos con otro de mis favoritos el Playero Acollarado/Semipalmated Plover. Mide 18 cm. y pesa 42 grs. Es pequeña y rechoncha, de la frente vertical, pico grueso y corto y lista alar prominente. Durante el invierno los adultos presentan la frente, el área orbital, el área que recorre desde el pico hasta las mejillas y la banda pectoral (en ocasiones incompletas) de color fusco. Por encima son café grisáceo, con la frente, el collar nucal y la región inferior de color blanco. La cola con la faja subterminal es café oscuro y la punta blanca. El pico es anaranjado con la punta negra, y los párpados y las patas son anaranjados. Los especimenes juveniles por encima presentan un escamado blancuzco, las áreas oscuras de la cabeza y el pecho son más café y no muy bien definidas. Se alimentan solos o en grupos pequeños sobre el lodo o la arena húmeda en la zona intermareal, y corren distancias cortas para detenerse abruptamente y atrapar moluscos pequeños, crustáceos y gusanos marinos. Cuando se encuentran tierra adentro (alejados de la costa) se alimentan de insectos y lombrices de tierra.

Greetings to all who enter to my blog, this time will give a short view some seabirds or shorebirds (Just some because if I present all never end) that can be seen on our beautiful island. First start with one of my favorites and the first coastal seabird I photographed and observed: The American Oystercatcher/Haematopus palliatus.

The Oystercatcher is a medium sized bird (43 cm) that frequent the sandy beaches and mudflats.

His eyes are yellow with red border and legs pale pink. His head is all black and it has the mantle of dark brown. The chest is white and has submitted an entry white on the wing (which distinguishes it from other similar species that inhabit the coast of southern Chile and Argentina, the Magellanic Oystercatcher). When he is seen flying a white band on the secondaries. The tail is dark brown with white at the base.

The beak is long and red-orange and flattened at the sides, characteristic of this family of birds that have been developed to open or remove crustacean shells attached to rocks.

It feeds on oysters, which opens with its strong beak and marine invertebrates as well-muyes. Like many shorebirds, the hours when feeding depends on the tides. Rest in high tide and is fed between trips. It is attracted by exposed sandbanks where they can rest, sleep or clean their feathers, often close to flocks of gulls, terns and other shorebirds but always keeping its distance.

Gives a series of loud whistles to get airborne, "pirip-pirip-pirip-pirip" and a long sharp whistles "uuiiiit.

The Oystercatcher inhabits most of the costs of the American continent in the Atlantic from New York and West from California and throughout Central and South America. The Oystercatcher need an area with long stretches of coastline and coastal plains that have not been modified by man. It's mostly sedentary (not migrate) and never far from the coast.

Next follows the Laughing Gull/Larus atricilla is a common gull in U.S. coastal areas in summer. Recognized by its very dark "hood". Take advantage of the slightest chance of feeding: follow the plow to catch worms from the ground, dug through the debris thrown into the sea shore, and continues to the fishing boats. Laughing Gull/Larus atricilla

We continue with another of my favorites on Semipalmated Plover /Charadrius semipalmatus. It measures 18 cm. and weighs 42 grams. It is small and squat, the front vertical, short, thick beak and prominent wing list. During the winter, adults have the forehead, the orbital area, the area that runs from the beak to cheek and pectoral band (sometimes incomplete) fusco color. Above are grayish brown, the forehead, nuchal collar and lower white region. The tail with dark brown subterminal band and white tip. The bill is orange with black tip, and eyelids, and legs are orange. The above juvenile specimens have a whitish scaly, dark areas of the head and chest are brown and not very well defined. They feed alone or in small groups about the mud or wet sand in the intertidal zone, and run short distances to abruptly stop and catch small molluscs, crustaceans and marine worms. When found inland (away from the coast) feed on insects and earthworms.

Otro Visitante.

Este es el jui,jui de Puerto Rico , otro visitante de mi jardin. Esta ave en especifico a estado visitandome desde hace poco , nunca lo habia visto en el area que vivo, y desde hace unos meses atras es que a estado pasando por mi barrio.Y haora se para en mi jardin frecuente mente a comer insectos.

El canto común es un silbo ascendente: "Juí". Durante la temporada de cría canta frecuentemente a lo largo del día. Al igual que muchos otros tiránidos, durante la madrugada el Juí tiene un canto más complejo y bello

HÁBITOS

El Juí está muy bien mimetizado mientras, posado en una rama en los estratos bajos o intermedios del bosque, espera la pasada de algún insecto para volar tras él. Las presas incluyen avispas, abejas, libélulas, hemípteros y orugas, con cerca del 15% de la dieta compuesta por frutas y bayas. Ocasionalmente se alimenta de caracoles, lagartijos y coquíes. Las mandíbulas de los tiránidos tienen ligamentos que cierran el pico rápidamente al alcanzar los insectos en vuelo. De febrero a julio, la especie anida en cavidades en los árboles o nidos artificiales. La puesta consiste de 3 a 6 huevos amarillentos con manchas color marrón que ambos sexos incuban. A diferencia de muchas aves terrestres, pero al igual que la hembra, el macho desarrolla un área en el vientre carente de plumas donde el calor corporal puede ser transferido a los huevos. Los jóvenes pueden volar unos 15 ó 16 días después de salir del cascarón.

Reina Mora De Puerto Rico/Spindalis portoricensis

En esta ocacion estare escribiendo sobre la Reina Mora de Puerto Rico una de mis aves favoritas de aqui en la isla y de echo un ave endemica de Puerto Rico, osea que solo la encuentras aqui en Puertorro.

Esta ave viaja en parejas o en grupos pequeñospor los bosques o plantaciones.Se alimenta principalmente de frutasy en ocaciones insectos. Y como la e podido observar yo en mi jardin le gusta mucho la guayaba y el aguacate , por las cuales mi padre peliaba porque se las comia antes que mi padre pudiera recojerlas.

Reina Mora Hembra/Female Puertorican Spindalis

Identificacion: El macho es verde por encima del lomo y anaranjado por el cuello y pecho con la cabeza negra con rayas negras. La hembra es verde oliva con un gris borroso por debajo.
Miden 17cm y pesan de 26-31g.

Habitat: Bosques, jardines, y plantaciones.

Reina Mora Macho/Male Puertorican Spindalis

Como ya mencione esta es una de mis aves favoritas me encanta su cantido y cada vez que la oigo en mi patio salgo corriendo al patio para verla o fotografiarla y siempre que pongo frutas en el comedero lo ago pensando en la reina mora y ademas es una de las nuestras. Quiero mencionar que las fotos que puse la foto del macho es mia y la foto de la hembra es de mi colega Gabriel Luego, pero claro la foto mia es mas linda , peace Gabriel.

Como saben durante casi todo el mes de mayo estuvo lloviendo y pues los pajareros casi no pudimos salir , jeje , pero un dia que hiso un ratito de sol me di la vuelta por la Boca en Barceloneta y pude foto grafiar un viudo colicinta con su hermoso plumaje de verano ,algo que el verano pasado no pude hacer.Aqui algunas fotos de este precioso colicinta macho.
